INC. All rights reserved «OLD BY* CHARD SPEHCSi Ph0n«i (Index on last page) SEDGWICK MACHINE WORKS, INC. 150 West 15th Street, New York CHARLES HENRY SEDGWICK HISTORICAL T*wo hundred and seventy-seven years ago, in * 1643, General Robert Sedgwick and John Winthrop, Jr., established the first furnace and iron works in America at Lynn, Mass. (Harper’s Encyclopaedia of United States History) For ten generations the Sedgwicks have con¬ tinued in the craft, devising and fashioning from metal and wood those machines and mechanical devices which have contributed so largely to the wonderful progress of the LInited States, hand¬ ing down from father to son the skill and ex¬ perience accumulated during more than two and a half centuries of conscientious effort. In 1844, Charles Henry Sedgwick, whose likeness (from an old photograph) is reproduced on the opposite page, and who was the seventh direct descendant of General Robert Sedgwick, brought the business to Poughkeepsie, N. Y., our present location. In 1893, Alonzo Sedgwick, son of Charles Henry Sedgwick, associated with Justus Inger- soll Wakelee, erected a new plant and concen¬ trated their united energies on the manufacture of Hand Power Elevators and Dumb Waiters. The business was incorporated Sept. I, 1913, under the laws of the State of New York, with Justus Ingersoll Wakelee as President and Gen¬ eral Manager, and Dwight Robert Sedgwick, son of Alonzo Sedgwick, as Treasurer and Factory Manager. 4 Sedgwick FOREWORD In addition to outfits illustrated herein, we have special descriptive matter on — Ammunition Lifts Automobile Elevators Brass Tube Dumb Waiters Fuel Lifts Gravity Lifts Hospital Elevators Iceless Refrigerators Invalid Elevators Under Counter Dumb Waiters, etc., etc., any or all of which will be sent on request. We Are Specialists Sedgwick 5 INTRODUCTION H erein are illustrated leading types of Sedg¬ wick Hand Power Elevators and Dumb Waiters for all purposes. Satisfactory results from the installation of Hand Power Elevators and Dumb Waiters depend upon the selection of outfits suitable to the conditions and requirements, and upon proper installation. We are, and for nearly thirty years have been, specialists in Dumb Waiters and Hand Power Elevators; we invite correspondence, and take personal interest in making recommendations which shall enable our customers to secure the best possible results. Estimates on outfits installed complete in running order, submitted on request. The name “Sedgwick” is registered in the United States Patent Office as our Trade-Mark, and purchasers of Dumb Waiters and Elevators bearing this Trade-Mark can depend upon having outfits which are strong, durable, easy running and satisfactory. The well-known superiority of the “Sedgwick” Elevators and EXimb Waiters is due both to the carefully selected, high-grade material used exclusively in their manufacture, and to im¬ provements — many of them patented — in principle, design, workmanship and finish. Sedgwick Dumb Waiter Machines are guaranteed for five years and will be repaired free of charge during that time if returned to the factory at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., express prepaid. See page 9 for Further Details Sedgwick 9 DUMB WAITER CARS nrhe Sedgwick Dumb Waiter Cars are made * of selected Hardwood, seasoned under sheds in the open air, and kiln dried before working. The Cars furnished with Sedgwick Automatic Brake Outfits and Sedgwick Band Brake Outfits are handsomely finished, the wood being first filled and then varnished two coats of best varnish. Dumb Waiter Cars are carried in stock in sizes, listed on page 7, fitted either with one hinged shelf or two solid shelves, in addition to the top and bottOTn. Dumb Waiter Cars fitted with one hinged shelf are, for the No. I size, 30 inches high in¬ side; for the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 sizes, 36 inches high inside. Dumb Waiter Cars fitted with two solid shelves are regularly 6 inches higher. The outside or over-all height of Dumb Waiter Cars is about 6 inches greater than the inside heights given in the above paragraph. We recommend the fitting of Double-Face Cars with solid shelves, when possible, as the solid shelves give additional strength and rigidity to the Car. Dumb Waiter Cars are regularly shipped assembled and crated, but will be shipped knocked-down, upon request. Door openings of sufficient size to admit the Car into the well must always be provided until after the outfit is installed. If sufficiently large openings to admit the assembled Car are not provided, it is necessary to build Cars of special design, which may be assembled inside the well. This makes additional expense and heavier Cars. STEEL CARS furnished where desired at an addi¬ tional price. For Stock Sizes see page 7 10 Sedgwick AUTOMATIC BRAKE DUMB WAITER MACHINE Above Cut shows Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter Machine mounted on plat¬ form ready to erect. This Machine is designed especially for private residence and similarly light service. Complete outfit, enclosure removed, is shown on page 6. Complete outfit, erected in lath and plastered enclosure, is shown on page 12. A “Fool Proof” Machine Sedgwick 11 AUTOMATIC BRAKE DUMB WAITER MACHINES The Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter Machines are a great improvement over all Automatic Lock and other Self- Retaining Machines, and are especially designed for purchasers who consider just as carefully what they are getting, as what they are paying. The Automatic Brake is independently sup¬ ported, thus relieving the machine of all end thrust, strain, and unnecessary wear. The Brake does not lock fast, but is applied and regulated by the load, holding the car securely at any point, allowing it to be raised and lowered smoothly and easily without the jumping and jarring common to all other Auto¬ matic Dumb Waiters. These Machines are superior in principle, design, construction, and finish, and are un¬ equalled for durability and safety. They are manufactured in large quantities with special tools, insuring the greatest ac¬ curacy, and are sold at the lowest price con¬ sistent with the quality of the mechanism. All shafting is of steel, and all bearings are fitted with steel anti-friction rollers to reduce friction, the machine running easily, quickly and smoothly. Sedgwick Service Satisfies Sedgwick 12 Construction Details, Plastered Well Sedgwick 13 AUTOMATIC BRAKE DUMB WAITER OUTFIT Erected in Plastered Well The Illustration on opposite page shows our Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter complete, for light service, properly erected in a well finished with lath and plaster. For heavier work see pages 18 and 19. The door openings should be at least as wide as the car and 4 feet high; the sills 2 feet 6 inches above the floor; the doors may be hinged or hung like a sash to run either up or down. There should also be a door or panel at the top for access to the Machine. Horizontal Cats, or Bridging, should be placed between the vertical studs, on 30-inch centers, to which the guide runs are secured by long screws passing through the lath and plaster. An opening large enough to admit the Car should be left at one floor until Dumb Waiter is erected. In many cases it is preferred to ceil the well with wood as shown on page 14. If well is of fire-proof material or has been finished without the bridging it may be neces¬ sary to put cleating on the face of the plaster, to which the runs shall be secured. This cleating may be horizontal and nailed to the studs, or vertical, back of the runs, if proper fastening can be had. The Runs are always to be secured with Screws, never nailed. Designed Especially for Residence Service 14 Sedgwick .IM . ^ Construction Details, Ceiled Well Sedgwick 15 SIMPLEX DUMB WAITER OUTFIT Erected in Ceiled Well The Simplex Dumb Waiter properly erected in ceiled well is shown opposite. The well is ceiled both inside and out. The inside ceiling can be dispensed with, if necessary to save expense, in which event the runs are screwed to the frame work. The Simplex meets all the demands for a good, serviceable Dumb Waiter for light service. It is simple, strong, economical, easy running, rapid in action, and suitable for any height. For heavier work see pages 18 and 19. The Car is held at any floor by a Spring Check acting on the hand rope, which is operated by a cord running from top to bottom of well. The Simplex is especially designed for cus¬ tomers who wish to purchase the machine only, supplying the other parts themselves. The Outfit complete is designed for dwellings of moderate cost where there are few, if any, servants, and where a reasonable amount of care may be expected in the use of a Dumb Waiter. The Simplex will prove more satisfactory ordinarily, and more durable always, than a cheap Automatic Lock Machine. Each Machine is carefully packed, complete, with full directions for erecting. The Lowest Priced Sedgwick Outfit 16 Sedgwick BAND BRAKE DUMB WAITER OUTFIT Cut shows Sedg¬ wick Band Brake Dumb Waiter Outfit erected complete, with the enclosure removed. The Band Brake Dumb Waiter is specially adapted for use in High Wells, in Factor¬ ies, Apartment Houses, Hotels, Hospitals, etc., where a strong, reliable, rapidrun¬ ning Dumb W ait- er for light loads, and hard service is required. For heavier work see pages 18 and 19. Pulling down on the Brake Cord applies the Brake partially, andcon- trols the speed in lowering; a final pull locks the Brake and holds the car stationary until the operator pulls up on the Brake Line. These Outfits will give good results with occasional or test loads up to two hundred pounds. In these geared machines, the hand wheel and the lift wheel are on separate shafts, which are mounted in substantial iron frames, with anti¬ friction steel bearings, and the motion of the hand wheel is transmitted to the lift wheel through a pair of carefully designed iron gears. By means of these gears we can increase the ratio so that each pound of pull on the hand rope will raise from 4 to 10 pounds, depending upon the gears used, the size of the hand wheel, etc. We have these gears in different sizes so that we are in a position to furnish very rapid run¬ ning dumb waiters for light loads, and easy run¬ ning dumb waiters for heavier loads. Cars are made from selected Ash Lumber. These Cars are of special design and construc¬ tion to secure minimum weight and maximum strength. STEEL CARS furnished where desired at addi¬ tional price. Sedgwick Service Satisfies Sedgwick 21 TUBE DUMB WAITERS 'Tube Dumb Waiters differ from our regular * outfits chiefly in that Tubes are used as guides for car and counter-weight in place of wood or steel guide runs. The Tubes may be of Brass or Steel as pre¬ ferred. Tube Dumb Waiters are popular where the outfit is not enclosed and where an attractive appearance is desired. Any Sedgwick Outfit, for any purpose, may be arranged with Tube Guides, and the nature of the work should govern the selection of the outfit. Cars may be of wood, steel or brass. The outfit shown opposite is designed for light, rapid service. Special Tube Dumb Waiter Circular showing various types of machines, prices, etc., will be sent upon request. Most Rapid Outfit Obtainable Sedgwick 23 HIGH SPEED DUMB WAITERS T*his is a small, rapid-running Dumb Waiter, designed for light loads, such as messages, newspaper copy, orders, bills, etc. It is suit¬ able for any height. Wire guides for car and weight, together with our special Oilless Bearings, make this outfit very light running and practically noise¬ less. Outfit consists of Car, Two Stand Sheaves, with Rubber Bumpers and Platforms, Wire Guides, Turnbuckles and Fittings. The entire outfit can be erected in an hour, requiring eight wood screws, four to secure each platform. Car regularly furnished, 10" wide, 6" deep, 17" high. (Carried in stock.) Space required 18" x 83^2^ • Special sizes will be furnished when desired at increased prices. As showing the wide variety of uses to which this outfit may be put, it may be stated that while many of them run from one floor to the next only, there are many which run more than one hundred feet in two to three seconds. Sometimes two cars are used, one balancing the other. This arrangement is advantageous when service is between two points only, as there is always a car at each terminal ready for use. “As Quick As a Wink” 24 Sedgwick UNDER COUNTER DUMB WAITER For Soda Fountains, Lunch Counters, etc. y Sedgwick 25 UNDER COUNTER DUMB WAITER OUTFITS TThis is a term we have adopted to distinguish outfits designed for use where there is in¬ sufficient space overhead for the machine. The Sedgwick Line of Under Counter Dumb Waiters covers every condition where there is no room for the machine overhead, so that whatever the conditions and requirements, some one of these outfits may be selected which will best do the work. OUR AIM Believing that the Best Hand Power Elevator or Dumb Waiter is none too good, and that the Best is the Cheapest—in the end, and that the Best is the most satisfactory always, we aim to build the Best in Design, Workmanship, and Materials, Many Different Styles 26 Sedgwick ICELESS REFRIGERATORS T*he term “Iceless Refrigerator’’ is used to * describe an arrangement for the preser¬ vation of food without the expense, trouble and annoyance of ice. In most homes the cellar is sufficiently cool to preserve the supplies of food which are carried over from one meal to another, and these cool cellars were the only means which our parents had in many cases for the preservation of such food. Once in a while someone was fortunate enough to have a very cool well or spring of pure water, and the food would be placed in a vessel and lowered into this well. Nowadays, however, the effort required to run up and down stairs to carry the food down after meals and to bring it up again when wanted is correctly assumed to involve a greater expenditure of effort than the cost of ice justifies, and therefore many people resort to the use of the ordinary refrigerator. The use of the Iceless Refrigerator, or in other words, a Sedgwick Automatic Brake Dumb Waiter, as a cabinet in which the food may be placed and then lowered either into the cool cellar or, if the cellar be not sufficiently cool, into a prepared well or pit beneath the cellar floor is becoming more and more general because a good dumb waiter costs but little more than a good refrigerator and the saving over the use of ice is likely to pay for the dumb waiter in a season or two. The only difference between one of the regu¬ lar Sedgwick Dumb Waiter Outfits and such an outfit designed to be used as an Iceless Refrig¬ erator is the furnishing of a heavier counter- Continued on lower half of next page Sedgwick 27 BOOK LIFTS B anks, Insurance Companies, Libraries and Commercial Establishments have found the Sedgwick Dumb Waiters valuable labor saving equipment when used as book lifts. The regular construction is used where en¬ closures are necessary, the brass and steel tube dumb waiters being selected where open con¬ struction is preferred. Sedgwick Book Lifts are built in all capacities and types suitable for every requirement. Specify load to be carried, normal and maximum, and size of car required. weight which shall weigh enough to balance both the car and the average weight of food and dishes to be kept in it. In ordering, therefore, it is well to state what the estimated weight of the usual load will be so that a sufficient amount of extra counterweight may be furnished with the outfit, for which there is a small additional charge. The special advantage of the Sedgwick Auto¬ matic Brake Dumb Waiter Outfit for this purpose is found in the fact that the Sedgwick machine is automatic and effective in both direc¬ tions. If the loaded car should be heavier than the counterweight, the automatic brake prevents the car running down. If on the other hand so much of the load be removed that the car is lighter than the counter¬ weight, again the automatic brake prevents the car running up. So whatever the conditions, no accident can happen. We Are Specialists 28 Sedgwick FUEL LIFT If You Have a Fireplace You Need This Sedgwick 29 FUEL LIFTS Jn all ages, the fireplace has been the symbol of home. The hearthstone has been the center of the home life; the hearth fire has been the symbol of the family spirit. Most people appreciate that the open fire¬ place is one of home’s most inviting features; and rare indeed is the homebuilder who does not insist upon at least one open fire as the altar of his household gods, the center of his family life. Despite this traditional longing of man for a fireside of his own—and despite the readiness of architects to gratify that longing—it is a fact that most fireplaces lie cold and dead, lacking that which is their very soul and their only justi¬ fication—the fire on the hearth. The explanation of this anomaly is simple. It is found in the inconvenience and untidiness of supplying the fuel and removing the ashes—two very necessary operations which nevertheless offend the sensibilities alike of master and mistress. The Sedgwick Fuel Lift solves the problem and fills a long felt want. Details and Prices upon Request. Send for Special Descriptive Circular. All material is of best quality and the highest standard of Machine Work and fitting is main¬ tained. The heavy iron frame, with strong steel braces, prevents the bearings getting out of line and keeps gears properly in mesh. All shafting is of steel, the gears are of ample size and strength, and all bearings are fitted with steel anti-friction rollers. A slight pull on Brake Line partially applies the Brake and controls speed of car in lowering. A final pull locks the Brake and the outfit cannot move or be moved until the operator releases the Brake by pulling up on the Brake Line. The Brake Band is lined with Vulcanized Fibre and is practically indestructible. The two hoist wheels, as shown in cut on page 30, allow the use of separate hoist cables, thus dividing the load, and one acting as a safety for the other. This is the safest arrange¬ ment known. With the larger sizes are furnished two Lift Wheels as shown in cut, or scored Iron Drum, as may be best suited to the work to be per¬ formed. As illustrated, this Elevator complete is in use in many stores and factories for handling freight, also in private houses and hotels for Trunk Lifts. So far as we know every Sedgwick Hand Power Freight Elevator ever built is still giving satisfactory service, except those destroyed by fire. Another customer wrote that the invalid’s three year old daughter, who weighed thirty- two pounds, operated the elevator and took her mother up and down without undue exer¬ tion. All Sedgwick Outfits are good but none have inspired our enthusiasm to the extent that these Invalid Elevators have, because there is no other outfit in the market like them, and be¬ cause of the many letters of appreciation and gratitude we have received from those who have them. The Sedgwick Grip Hoists illustrated on pages 48 and 49 are frequently used in connection with these outfits, thus permitting the use of power for lifting the loads at comparatively little expense. The Crank Shaft is thrown out of gear, so that it does not revolve when lowering and a slight pressure on the Brake Lever con¬ trols the speed. A final movement of the Lever locks the Brake and holds the platform stationary at any point desired. The Best is None Too Good Sedgwick 47 ASH CRANE The Sedgwick Ash Crane shown here makes a very simple and convenient device with which to hoist cans of ashes. When not in use the Crane is dropf>ed below sidewalk level as indicated in dotted lines. When raised to position shown in cut the Crane may be swung to any position required, thus permitting the cans to be raised without coming in contact with surrounding walls or the hatch combing, and when the cans are above the side¬ walk level the Crane may be swung around so as to deposit them upon the sidewalk. We furnish Crane, Brackets for supporting same, Self- retaining Block and Fall, also Bailforcan. WeighthOlbs. Very Simple to Install 48 Sedgwick UNIVERSAL CRIP HOIST DIFFERENTIAL CRIP HOIST Sedgwick 49 GRIP HOISTS The Sedgwick Grip Hoists illustrated opposite * are positive in their action and afford an inexpensive means of using power for lifting loads with Hand Power Elevators. The Gripping Sheaves “C” and “D” clear the Hand Rope when not in use and by means of. the control rope are forced against the Hand Rope, thus lifting the load. When car reaches the desired level, release the control rope and apply the brake. In lowering power is not used, simply release the brake and control the speed. Upon installing the Grip Hoist some prefer to reduce the Counterweight sufficiently that even the empty car will descend upon the release of the brake. The Universal is run by two belts (one straight, the other crossed). The Differential has cut gears of highest quality, insuring smooth running and is run by a single belt. Both are carried in stock in two sizes: No. 1 will lift 2000 pounds test load on a good ele¬ vator; No. 2, 3000 pounds. These Grip Hoists may be located on floor, ceiling or joist work. Not sold for Passenger Elevators, only for hoisting goods. Thousands in Constant Use 50 Sedgwick HATCHWAY AND OUTRIGGER HOISTS For hoisting or lowering material with Cable or Rope, without Platform for load or Counter-weight. As an Outrigger Hoist the Lifting Cable is carried from Machine to any desired position by means of an extra Sheave. Strong, Smooth Running Gears, Positive Band Brake, Steel Shafts, Roller Bearings, Iron Drum with turned Grooves for Cable, making the Most Substantial and Satisfactory Elevator of the kind. Any Capacity Desired Sedgwick 51 HOSPITAL ELEVATORS W e have made a special study of the problems involved in the design, manufacture and in¬ stallations of Hand Power Elevators and Dumb Waiters for Hospitals. If Architects and Hospital Authorities requiring Hand Power Outfits will consult us, we can furnish outfits which, because they are designed especially for the purpose, may be expected to give satisfactory service. GRAVITY LIFTS T his is a term adopted to distinguish outfits designed for use where the loads are uniformly down. The Sedgwick Machine Works has installed such outfits for the National Biscuit Co., the American Sugar Refining Co., The Kirkman Soap Co., The Tiffin Products Co., and many other firms, which because they were designed to suit the general scheme for handling their materials, give more satisfactory results than would anything else. TRUNK LIFTS A Fine Dwelling is not complete without a Sedgwick Trunk Lift. These outfits are easy running freight type ele¬ vators (see page 32), usually preferred with plat¬ forms slatted on sides and back, should be made about four feet square to be useful for carrying furniture from one floor to another when necessary. Sedgwick Trunk Lifts prevent baggage, furniture, etc., from marring walls and woodwork of residences when being taken up and down stairs and usually allow one person in place of two to transfer such material.
