BRICK MANTEL DESIGNS No moulded, shaped or special brick necessary in fabrication of these mantels, Standard Face Brick only required. The best, most permanent and most artistic Firesides and Mantels are built of Standard Face Brick and at less cost. Copyright 1916 By E. P. EIiZEY Parkersburg, W. Va. ALL EIGHTS RESERVED AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY -K S' •*£**' FOREWORD T HIS BOOKLET showing selected Brick Mantel Designs is for no other purpose than to assist home builders to secure at a minimum of expense ideal mantels and firesides for their homes and is intended to meet the urgent demand of builders and owners who are defeated in having just what they want because of their inability to secure such designs and assistance in construction as is herein given. Every mantel shown in this booklet is designed to lay up of Standard Face Brick and this fact assures a minimum of cost with the certainty of the most pleasing results. Our designer presents mantels and fireplaces architecturally attractive, and the beauty of design and outline assisted by the rich warm tones possible in Face Brick makes a fireside to enrich the cottage or grace a mansion. In the Designs shown, we have purposely avoided any attempt to give further expression to mantels and firesides by use of colors and shades in printing. We simply show tracings in outline that give full value of their architectural expression. Color or shade of brick used is a matter of individual taste and the mantel or fireside can be built up in the shade and color of brick the builder prefers. ARCHITECTS— It is not presumed or intended that this work shall in any case supplant or take the place of the services of the Architect or the Architect-Engineer. The many homes constructed without the as¬ sistance of an architect will be able to use these designs to great advantage and they will assist the busy architect in much of his brick mantel and fireside planning. We contend that the architect is indispensable in the planning and building of the home and best results will always be attained under his able direction. 3 THE IDEAL FIRESIDE RICK Fireplaces and Brick Mantels with a fire on the open hearth give that warmth, • comfort and cheer that come from no other method of heating. The glow of the fireside in a setting of rich, warm toned brick is the last word in home cheerfulness and hos¬ pitality. The designs shown in this booklet make it possible for any home builder to enjoy the pleasure and comfort of an open fire at a minimum of expense. No moulded, shaped or special brick are re¬ quired in the fabrication of these mantels. Up to this time, it has only been possible for the builder who could afford to lose sight of expense to revel in the pleasure of brick fireplaces and mantels as the cost had made them a luxury. This unnecessary cost has been entirely overcome in the design¬ ing of fireplaces and mantels that can be built of Standard Face Brick which can be had anywhere at a minimum of cost, admitting of the building of artistic and attractive firesides of the most durable and permanent material possible at a less expense than the ordinary, commonplace wood cabinet mantels which have been used to such extent onty because of the fact of a less outlay. No material is more practical or adaptable in construction than are Standard Face Brick, the unit of size is such that readily builds into the design or outline preferred and the many shades and tones in which they are found makes it an easy matter to secure the individual expression your color scheme demands. 4 BRICK FIRESIDE ADVANTAGES jT TANDARD FACE BRICK not only make the most permanent, most attractive and from » 8 every standpoint, the most ideal fireside and mantel it is possible to construct, but have such real merit in their permanent advantages as to make them a matter of self-protec¬ tion for the modern home. In the brick fireside and mantel, all danger from fire is overcome. There is no varnish or paint to blister from over-hot fires nor are there any of the unsightly results found in the drying-out, shrinking and splitting of wood-faced firesides and wood mantels. Firesides or mantels laid up in Standard Brick are at once a part of the chimney or flue itself and cannot slack away or become loose as do detached mantels built of other material. The fact of their being built into the fabrication of the chimney or flue itself makes them the most permanent fireside possible and one that is not affected by any outside conditions. The saving in the painting, varnishing and yearly doing over alone more than justifies the use of Standard Face Brick for mantel purposes. They are easily kept clean and attractive, the tone or shade of brick is permanent and without risk of fading or discoloring, they are not affected by heat or the many other things that affect firesides and mantels of other material. Permanence and all these other advantages are to be had at a less first cost than is possible in any other material and the upkeep expense of other materials is entirely eliminated. a IN SELECTING BRICK OR genuinely better results, Face Brick should not be selected to identical shade for " s> Mantel or Fireside building, rather select varying shades of agreeing tones. To select carefully to one shade of Red, Grey, Buff or Ironspot brick would result in a too conven¬ tional aspect bordering on the painted and mechanical. With your preference for shade or color that will meet your ideas in mind, allow a consid¬ erable range of shades that may blend into this general tone and the result will be much more at¬ tractive than if all the brick were selected to one shade. Fact is, the mistake generally made is in not having range enough instead of having too wide a variance. Again, do not attempt to select your brick for their mechanical trueness. Brick selected for their true lines only become more mechanical when laid up in numbers. The usual deviation from right angled lines, coming from shrinkage and slight warpage in burning, assists in making of more artistic brick work when laid up, and yet, to those who have not fully studied these matters the single brick slightly twisted or irregular in outline seems to invite failure and disaster to the com¬ pleted work when, in fact, the opposite is true as irregular lines and slightly misshapen brick elimin¬ ate the mechanical effect of squared blocks and merge into real artistic fabrics of the whole which would not be possible to achieve in right-angled, plane surface units. The artistic blends of color and the beauty in design are not of one brick but in the general ensemble. 6 Elzey’s Brick: Mantel Design No. 1 All Rights Reserved By E. P. ELZEY Parkersburg, W. Va.
