How to Find How Much Paint You Require To find out the quantity of paint you require, measure the length, width and height of the building. In measuring the height you can measure it at one corner, as it is not necessary to measure it at the highest point of the gable. Add together the total number of feet of the two sides and two ends of the building that you want to paint. This will give you the total length of the surface you w’ish to paint. Then multiply this by the height of the building in feet, which gives you the number of square feet of surface to be covered with paint. One gallon of Seroco Ready Mixed Faint will coyer from 250 to .'100 square feet of surface two coats, according to the condition of the surface. Some surfaces are very porous and absorb more paint than others; therefore, in figuring we suggest that you take the basis of 2o0 square feet to the gallon. Then divide the number of square feet you get by 250 and that : v-es you the number of gallons required for the building. Divide this by 250, which represents For example, suppose your building measures . anr , r0 ximate number of square MflSSi-ifu mISK 2 feet that 1 gallon of our paint will Front 20 feet cover the surface two coats. \: ou One Side'.'.'.!. 30 feet will find this gives you the result 8 Rear.20 feet gallons, so that it will be necessary other side . -30 feet f or you to |, uy g gallons to cover the Total.xno feet surface of a building of the size Multiply this by height... 20 feet given two coats. Why Hand Made Paint Is Reliable Don’t attempt to make your own paint, and don’t depend upon painters’ hand made paints, because by the very nature of the materials it cannot be reliable. It is practically a physical impossibility for any painter to mix properly by hand the lead, oil and colors thoroughly and accu¬ rately enough to secure a paint that will jjive good service. In order to obtain a perfect shade of any color it is necessary to be accurate. If a painter mixes a small quantity he seldom hits exactly the same shade a second time if necessary to in¬ crease his supply for the same job; or if, to be on the safe side, he mixes too large a quantity, he wastes the paint. Besides, he will take much time to mix it, for which time you have to pay. You are also likely to get a poor job. Why attempt something that has uncertain results, especially when it costs more to do it that way? We offer you a certainty—a paint guaranteed not to peel, blister, chalk or rub off, which either you or a painter may use with equally satisfactory results. fr $J05 TO $218 A GALLON According to the Quantity BUY YOUR PAINT FRON US GUARANTEED Not to Peel, Blister, Chalk or Rub Off Ail the Colors in Which We Furnish SEROCO READY MIXED PAINT Are Shown on Page 14. - V SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO., CHICAGO. Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, Ill. Dear Sirs:—I ana greatly pleased with your Seroco Paint. It gives first class satisfaction. I painted my house and used some pure white lead paint right alongside of yours and you can’t see any dif¬ ference in the looks of the two paints. However, Seroco Paint is better than most of the paints. People say I got the swellest house around here, and they always ask, “Where did you get your paint!” and, of course. I always tell them. “Sears, Roebuck and Co.,” for I am proud of it. I must tell you a joke on one of our merchants. He went along with me to the depot for some goods, and when he saw the cans of paint I was getting, he asked what I paid for the paint and I told him. He said he could sell me paint as cheap, and I told him he could not. He took the bills, went into his store and fig¬ ured for a while, then said: “My paint costs me $1.50 a gallon and I sell it for $2.00 a gallon. Your paint can’t be any good.” I ex¬ plained it was guaranteed, so I would risk it anyway. I told him that all goods received from you had been satisfactory and that if anything at any time should prove unsatisfactory you would make it right. Yours very truly. C. A. HOOKER. It works easy under the brush and covers from 250 to 300 square feet to the gallon, and it has a beauti¬ ful gloss. I have painted a house and had good success with it. The house is 20x18x20 feet, the addition is 20x18x18 feet, and I bought 12 gallons of Seroco Paint for the body of the house and 2 gallons for the trimmings. The barn is 40x4SxlS feet, for which I bought 15 gallons of paint and 10 gallons of oil, and it is the best paint I ever saw. I remain as ever. Yours very truly, ALBERT F. TREE. BEST PAINT HE EVER USED AT ANY PRICE. Shippensburg, Penn. Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, Ill. Dear Sirs:—As to the merits of the house paint I bought of you. and which I am now having put on a large three-story building in this city, owned by me, I want to tell anyone wanting to paint, that this is the best paint 1 ever used at any price, and since the second coat is on the building it looks bet¬ ter than houses painted with so called white lead paints costing over twice as much. I wish you could just come and see the fine appearance of this job of work. It has made much favorable com¬ ment and I have had many com¬ pliments on the work. The paint¬ ers sav it handles better and '-ov¬ ers better than any paint they ever used, and it is so strong in pigments that It required from 2 to 5 gallons of linseed oil to every 8 gallons of paint as taken from the buckets to thin it down for first coat, and one-third linseed oil r.» the second coat. Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, Ill. We recently purchased the farm and it has been a great number of years siuce the buildings have been painted, consequently they were in very bad condition. The painter had not used your paint before and. like some people, was skep¬ tical regarding it, but now he is loud in his praise of it and cannot say enough in favor of it. He says, beyond a doubt, that it is far su¬ perior as to quality and pureness to any he ever used, and I do not doubt that you will receive many other orders from this vicinity just through the advertisement our buildings give you. We have saved over half and have a very superior paint. Very truly. W. C. JENKINS. SAVED AT LEAST ONE-THIRIJ ON THE JOB AND HAS LOTS OF PAINT LEFT OVER. Masontown. W. Va. Sears. It is not only a perfect substitute but it is better than the pure spirits of turpentine when used for this purpose. Turpentine is used to thin paints and varnishes, rendering them easier to spread; it makes the paint or varnish film very thin, which facilitates drying. By its aid the molecules of oil are more widely distributed, causing the oil to dry in shorter time, but when the paint or varnish has dried the turpentine is entirely gone, having evaporated after performing its function. Why use the ex¬ pensive pure spirits of turpentine as a thinning medium when our S. R. Substitute Turpentine will do exactly the same work at a saving of 50 per cent and over? Our S. U. Substitute Turpentine will evaporate entirely the same as the pure turpentine, and for mixing with flat colors it will give better satisfaction than the pure turpentine. S. R. Substitute Turpentine is free from benzine, will not yellow, and is free from stain or grease. It will not cause paint to run, crawl or remain tacky. Painters everywhere are making a great saving by using S. It. Substitute Turpentine in place of the pure turps and we positively guarantee that the material will not injure the w-oodwork on which it is used. There is absolutely no necessity of paying high prices for turpentine used by painters and varnishers when you can purchase a perfect substitute at the prices quoted below. Try it; if it is not as we say your money will be returned. No. 30C3462 S. R. New Process Mineral Barn Paint Our Second Quality Mineral Paint A high grade paint is a cheaper paint to use on your buildings than a cheap or low priced paint. You cannot expect the best wearing materials in a cheap paint, nor can you expect the manufacturer, the jobber or the paint dealer to sell his paint below cost. When you buy a low priced paint from the ordinary paint dealer you must remember that there are two or three profits included in the price you pay for the paint and you can draw your own conclusions as to the quality of the ingredients used in its manufacture. Such paints are not worth the labor of putting them on your buildings; they may last about six months ora year and then you are obliged to repaint. For years we have been experimenting with different oils and pigments with the object in view of making a low priced paint that would look well and wear better than many cheap, worthless, low priced paints that are now on the market. In our New Process Mineral Barn Paint we have succeeded in making a paint which, while not guaranteed, we claim will wear longer and look better than any cheap mineral barn paint you can buy on the market at anything like our price. It is manufactured in our own paint factory and we know every ingredient that it contains; we know that the oil and pigments used in its manufacture are of better quality than is con¬ tained in most of the low priced paints on the market. Our Guaranteed Seroco Weatherproof Mineral Barn Paint, listed on opposite page, is by far the cheapest and best paint to use, considering its high quality and wonderful wearing qualities; the labor of putting on the paint is also an important consideration—you do not want to be bothered with painting every few years, but if a second quality paint will answer your purpose, and if you want a paint that will improve the appearance of your buildings where length of wear is only a secondary considera¬ tion, a paint that costs but very little and that will brighten up the build¬ ings and sheds on your premises for a reasonable length of time, and where repainting is done every season or two anyway to brighten up the surroundings, then order our New Process Mineral Barn Paint and we will send you a better paint than you can buy elsewhere at anything like our price. Remember, we man¬ ufacture this paint ourselves, and by purchasing from us several profits are eliminated. Do not fail to mention color wanted. Apply with a varnish brush; 2-inch brush recom¬ mended. In selecting a color it is necessary that the color selected be of a similar shade to the old finish; for instance, a piece of furniture finished in mahogany cannot be refinished in light oak by applying the light oak varnish stain. VELVET SANITARY KALSOMINE OR WALL FINISH AVERY U5R* 1 COLUMBIA UN> Vr You can improve the appearance of any kal- somined room wonderfully by stenciling a border or panel on the walls or ceiling. Place stenciled borders 9 or 18 inches from the ceiling or directly under the ceiling. A full and complete variety of stencils will be found on page 20. and as they cost but very little and considering the wonderful effects that can be produced with them with very little extra labor it will pay you to include one or more of these stencils with your order for kalsomine. One package of our kalsomine weighing 4 pounds will cover more surface than a 5-pound package of any other kalsomine or wall finish. We do not say this merely to sell our goods, but it is an actual fact. There is no need of putting a lot of heavy material in kalsomine to make up weight when it does not add to the covering power or finish. You cannot get around this fact. Send us your order for the quantity you will need, compare it with other kalsomines or wall coatings that come in 5-pound packages, and if our Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine does not cover more surface, pound for pound, than any other, or if our Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine does not give you a better finished wall with less labor, then write us and we will return your money. YOU NEED NO EXPERIENCE TO DO GOOD WORK WITH OUR VELVET SANITARY KALSOMINE OR WALL FINISH SEE SAMPLE TINTS ON PAGE 18 OF THIS CATALOG. KALSOMINE AN EN-Oy|c TIRE ROOM FOR ONLY « VELVET SANITARY KALSOMINE OR WALL FINISH is entirely different from the ordinary kalsomines or wall coatings offered on the market in that anyone without the least experience can do perfect work with it. When you use Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine or Wall Finish you will get the finest and smoothest finish that can possibly be had with kalsomine or any wall finish. Please bear in mind that our Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine is entirely sanitary and germproof, it is the most hygienic wall finish that was ever put on the market and we guarantee a better finish when using Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine than from any other preparation, no matter how extensively advertised and what claims are made for it. Also bear in mind that our Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine can be easily removed from the walls at any time with a sponge and water and the walls recoated with new kalsomine, leaving the walls fresh and sanitary. You cannot do this with some of the wall finishes offered on the market, for they cannot be removed, and you are therefore compelled to cover the dust and dirt with the new wall finish and seal the dirt to the walls instead of removing it. It comes in many beautiful tints so that each room, if de¬ sired, may be treated in a different color, also the most harmonizing combination of colors may be had with Velvet Sanitary Kal¬ somine Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine is ground so fine that settling after being mixed is practically impossible; this feature insures a uniform coat and on account of its lightness more surface may be covered at one time than is possible with the heavy kalsomines. Covering Capacity of Velvet Sanitary Kalsomine. One package will cover from 500 to 600 square feet on smooth walls, therefore one package will in most cases cover the walls and ceiling of a room measuring 10x12 feet. Wonderful artistic effects may be obtained by a combination of the various tints, and since the cost is so very little we suggest that a different tint be selected for the ceiling. In this way some remarkably beautiful effects can be produced. _ ' VELVET SANITARY FRESCO COLOR KALSOMINE Sample shades of the four shades in which we furnish our Fresco Colors will be found on page 18. Comparison Table Showing the Properties of the Two Vari¬ eties of White Lead. These are the results of chemical analyses, microscopic tests and weather tests of years’ duration con¬ ducted by various agencies, among them associations of paint manu¬ facturers, paint dealers, master painters and journeymen painters, industrial and public institutions, leading chemists of the country and our own chemists. Fire It Is changed readily pro the ■ lead when ed in Sublimed wit paint Is practically umilleetcd by exposure lo hydrogen sulphide gas, which is plentiful in smoke, sewer gas and the gases given off by de¬ caying animal and vegetable mat¬ ter; while corroded white lead so exposed turns a dirty gray or black, which explains why many buildings on which it is used soon turn dirty looking as if they had been painted a long time. Sublimed white lead has little effect on (luting colors, with the result that paint in which it is used holds its original shade very much longer than paint in which corroded white lead is used, for the latter acts on tinting colors, causing the colors to fade darken Sublimed white lead is NON- POISONOUS. while in using corrod¬ ed white lead there is more or less danger from lead poisoning, a fact which has caused some European governments to compel dealers to label it "White Lead—Poison.” Tests also prove that zinc oxide in certain quantities is a necessary in¬ gredient in high grade paint, for while its covering capacity is not as great as white lead, it counteracts flip tendency of all white leads to chalk, making a harder film and a more glossy finish and does not darken on exposure to hydrogen sul¬ phide gas. II also makes the paint work more easily under the brush. But zinc oxide must not he used in too large a proportion, as it then develops brittleness and causes the paint film to check, which explains the trouble with paint containing ton large a proportion of zinc oxide. I N OUR Paint Color Sample Book, for the past two seasons, under the heading of “Pure Paint or Guaranteed Paint,” we have shown that our Seroco Brand Ready Mixed Paint (quoted on other pages of this catalog) is much superior to the so called “pure” paint. For the benefit of those who may not have read our former explanation of this subject, let us say that Seroco brand is a combination ready mixed house paint perfectly adapted to general needs; a paint scientifically developed through years of experimenting and practical service; a paint that does not peel, check, chalk or rub off with years of exposure; a paint in which we have so much con- tu fidence that we guarantee to furnish new paint free if it fails to do what we claim. However, there has always been a persistent demand from master painters, journeymen painters and some home owners for so called “pure” paint, due to long established use sp . of corroded white lead as the standard paint pigment and the fact that its manufacturers have spent millions in advertising it. This cc led us to offer, during the past two years, “pure" paint made according to the regulation formula. We gave our customers the choice ® h and explained that if they preferred so called “pure" paint we could save them money on it. At the same time we showed it to be a in decidedly inferior paint, due to the fact that its chief pigment, which is pure white lead made by the “Old Dutch Process” of cor- j*, 1 rosion, is a very weak compound, as shown by tests presented in the comparison table on this page. There has been a great deal of DISCUSSION about paint, and a great deal of EXPENSIVE ADVERTISING has been paid Je for to convince the public that pure paint made with corroded white lead and linseed oil is the only material to use, but these wf statements have been largely based on mere theories and customs not thoroughly investigated. In the last ten years a great number of experiments and weather tests have been made which absolutely disprove the widely advertised claims for corroded white lead and paint, the so called “pure” paint in which it is used. In the face of the facts developed by these tests, corroded white load is still being made and marketed. Why? Simply because costly advertising has established a demand for it; because corroded white lead is the advertised standard. Let the actual facts, as here stated, prove which kind of paint is the real standard. Our business policy is CONSTRUCTIVE, not destructive. We build up rather than tear down. When we discard an established article we offer something better; so in proving the fallacy of widely advertised claims for corroded white lead, in exploding the old theories about "pure" paint, we accepted the obligation to provide a better article for the same purpose. We have found it in ptire sublimed white lead. With pure sublimed white lead as its principal solid ingredient, we now offer our Longlife Brand of Master Painters’ Ready Mixed Pure Paint, the first paint to combine highest quality with chemical purity. Its ingredients and their Le nj rr j° 3 ‘ proportions are evolved from practical tests—tests of time, tests of sun, wind, rain, cold, heat, as well as scientific tests for chem- ous nan ical changes. The result is a “pure” paint that is also a perfect .paint. The formula tells the story. —- To our numerous friends, home owners and unprofessional .painters who need a good high grade ready mixed house paint, many of whom are familiar with Seroco brand, quoted elsewher|[in this catalog, we still recommend Seroco Ready Mixed House Paint. It is also based upon a scientifically developed formula aijfd has proved by years of service to he a paint that does not peel, check, chalk or rub off. Pour off all of the oil and some of the paint, then add turpentine to the heavy material at the bottom of the can and stir thoroughly. It is then ready to use. Where stencils are to be used for kal- somine stenciling it is necessary that the stencils be given a light coat of shellac before using. HIGH GRADE INCUBATOR LAMP OIL. Our High Grade Incubator Oil is not like the ordinary kerosene oil, but is an oil which will give you an even temperature because it forms less crust on the wick, leaving the wick soft instead of with a hard crust. Operators of incubators realize that without an even temperature it would be impossible to secure a successful hatch, and an even temperature cannot be obtained with the majority of oils offered on the market. Our Incubator Oil will give you an even and steady white flame and you do not have to trim the wick as often as when burning ordinary kerosene. This In¬ cubator Oil has by actual test burned steadily for thirty days and nights before there was any noticeable change in the flame. No other oil, even the best brands, will do this. Return the oil at our expense if not as represented. May be used for house lamps as well as incu¬ bators. To Insure a Successful Hatch Use Only the Best.
