Its vast and immense proportions dwarf by comparison every other playhouse of every character and kind and its projectors promise its enter- tainments will be first in point of merit and originality. In "A Society Circus" is witnessed a production which, from a dramatic, operatic or arenic standpoint has never been equaled in the amusement world. In the magnificence and splendor of its scenic effects the spectacle marks a new era in the art of stagecraft. Each of the five scenes which make up the three acts is replete with action, absorbing interest and lavishness of detail. The musical numbers, the great chorus of trained voices, the beautiful ballet, "The Song of the Flowers," are original features of the programme and supplemented by the most startling novelties in the circus tournament. As a whole, "A Society Circus" is a departure from the accepted ideas of amusement enterprises and establishes a new record for Hippo- drome entertainments, which have made the great playhouse famous throughout the world. New arenic acts, seen for the first time in this country, will be added from v time to time. Following "A Society Circus" will be a new pro- duction of equal grandeur, magnitude and originalitv of conception. Its title, "A Roman Circus," is sug- gestive of the possibilities of the spectacle, which will be arranged along the lines which made the enter- tainments of ancient Rome historically famous. Fea- tures, striking and original, will be introduced, and the entire spectacle will be on a par with its prede- cessors on the Hippodrome stage in beauty, character and variety. WONDERS AWAIT AT LUNA PARK With the closing of the season at Coney Island, active work began on a new Luna Park, the great seaside playground of the nation. The season of 1906 will witness a festival of the world's marvels, unap- proached in the annals of amusement history. The broad expanse of Luna Park is being stripped of the manifold devices and appliances which afforded enter- tainment and diversion for five million persons of every age and from every land last season, and in their places appear individual and collective innovations and revelations. A glittering wonderland, surpassing any- thing vivid fancy ever conceived, will await the crowds next May. Human ingenuity never before produced the like of the Luna Park of 1906, and its watchword will continue to be amusement no more novel, amazing and fascinating than ever wholesome and clean. "A SOCIETY CIRCUS" Arrangement and Production by Frederic Thompson Staged by Edward P. Temple Book by Sidney Rose nfeld Music by Manuel Klein Lyrics by Rosenfeld and Klein, Scenery by Arthur Voegtlln INFORMATORY. (See page 25 for tabulated card of characters.; ACT I. Scene I. — A Gypsy Camp, Strangely Invaded. The rise of the curtain discloses a broad expanse of romantic woodland, selected by a band of nomads for encampment. They ariive afoot, mounted bareback, and crowded in the picturesque vehicles of their tribe. Fol- lowing the manual work of unloading wagons, pitching tents, lighting fires, and the other incidental labor of early camp — performed by the women of the party while the men, at ease, watch approvingly — there is a production of booty secured during the journey. One is empty-handed. His irate companions clamor for his life as penalty. The King and Queen, aroused by the outcry, appear from their wagon. In defense he produces a violin and plays an air whose plaintive beauty so charms that his life is spared. Others of the rovers, inspired, join in music with him and the scene becomes one of mad melody and dance. Suddenly, at the wildest crescendo, a gypsy wed- ding procession approaches. The quaint ceremony is performed by the King, following a Romany dance and moments of merrymaking. Lady Volumnia, whose castle is in the neighborhood, attended by court ladies and gen- tlemen, enters as the proceedings end. Her millions are "tainted" and charity and commerce spurn them. She yearns for sympathy and change. Fizz Fluka (Marceline), her secretary and almoner, is hopelessly deaf, adding to her misery. Asking his advice by megaphone, she receives the suggestion to have her fortune and future revealed by the gypsy card reader. Esmeralda, greedily accepting a handful of the Lady's "tainted" gold, drones of a poor, dark, young man on a white horse, who loves her devot- edly, and who will forget the bad repute of her dollars, As the gypsy recites, Paul Pasky enters, leading a white horse. Lady Volumnia, amazed and impressed, interro- gates him, hears that he is all that is left of the P. T. Twopaw & Jingling Bros.' Circus, wrecked and stranded on its visit to Mars, and that her image has ever been before him. Affinities have met, she is delightedly sure. She announces her intention of establishing "A Society Circus" at her palace and giving a fete whose magnificence will astound, and departs, telling Pasky to hurry after. The gleeful gypsies hurriedly pack and trail behind.
