SECTION I. WATER COLORS, coMi'Kisnni Water Colors in Cakes and Half Cakes, Fitted Boxes of Ditto; Moist Colors in Pans and Half Pans, Fitted Boxes of Ditto; Water Colqr Liquids; Indian Ink ; &c. Winsor & Newton’s Water Colors. Previous to the. establishment of the house of "Winsor and Newton (In 1832), the evil repute of want of permanence attached to the Water Colors in ordinary use; . and the most beautiful productions of Water Color Art were inevitably fugitive through the instability of the materials employed. This deplorable state of so beautiful and purely, an art, urged Winsor and New- ton to earnest inquiry and research, with a view of raising the character of the material employed. Their first care was to exclude, as far as possible, all objectionable pigments; and to bring forward and recommend only colors that could be relied on for permanence, and from which purity and richness of tone were obtainable. They next turnpd their attention to the employment of .machinery in grinding, and overcame all difficulties on this score in 1840. The high standard of excellence sought by Winsor and Newton entirely set aside all common recipes and pernicious compounds, and rendered indispensable the aid of Chemical Science. Consequently perfectly appointed Chemical Works were established by them in 1844. The advantageous .results of the establishment of these Works were apparent in the production of colors totally different from previous manufactures. The old colors were improved and ne%v ones introduced. Of Winsor & Newton’8 Water Colors, therefore, it may be stated, that sound chemical knowledge and complete laboratory plant and apparatus, — powerful and specially adapted machinery,— and the matured experience of many years, ensure purity of Pigment, exquisite fineness, and •'& most perfect form of preparation for the Artist's palette. Winsor & Newton's Finely Prepared Oil Colors in Collapsible Tubes. ■Winsor & Newton have long pair! special attention to the production and preparation of their Artists’ Oil Colors, which have attained their present high reputation by possessing characteristic qualities, established by every variety ot concluive test. Tlio Figments used are of the highest and purest quality. At flic “North London Color Works,” Winsor A: Newton possess every facility and appliance for the pro Unction of manufactured colors, and the testing, purifying, Are., of natural ones. Grinding Artists’ Colors by machinery was first commenced by Winsor A: Newton in 1840, special apparatus being invented by them for the imrpose. Since that period still further improvements have been made; and at present there exists no machinery that for power ami precision, combined with great cleanliness in working, cun at all compare with that invented and porfeutod by Winsor A; New- ton for the grinding of their Artists’ Oil Colors. No mediums or admixtures are used in tlio preparation of these Colors, which, consequently, keep fresh and pure and ready for use, without reference to time or climate. Briefly, therefore, it may be mentioned that Ihe best and purest rigments, most thoroughly ground In unadulterated Oil, form the ingredients of Winsor Sc Now- ton’s Oil Colors, causing them to take the foremost rank, and to bo used most extensively both at home and abroad. 27 Frost & Adams, . 37 CORNHILL, BOSTOI.. The singular interest that has been excited in late years In the subject of Tot- tery is at this time bearing remarkable fruit in the shape of a ■widespread effort to produce forms, and surface decoration on forms, that shall rival those done in such old times as are regarded as being peculiarly rich In artistic light and insight. The rivals to the ancient works are seen daily in Increasing numbers and. in varying beauty, and of most diverse colors and characters. Scarcely a month now passes but some addition is made to the number of wares decorated by new methods, which take the impress of the individual minds that have invented them. This interest which has heretofore been confined principally to European Countries is now gaining with us, and people of refined culture are giving much attention to this truly beautiful art. On account of this Interest a demand has been created for Lacroix’s Colors, so extensively used in China and Tile painting, and to meet this demand wo have Imported from the manufacturer a full assort- ment which we oiler 111 separate tubes or neatly arranged In boxes. The hair of which they are com- posed is specially prepared, so as to insure the Brushes keeping their peculiar shapes. The various shapes, as illustrated, will suggest to Artists the use to which they are best adapted. For instance, F is double-pointed, affording a peculiar touch when pressed laterally on the canvas; G is carefully made to resemble a worn brush, but not cut or trimmed ; H is of long, feathery edge, affording sweep- ing touches — and so on through the list. The art' of painting in oil on silks, satins and similar materials, has long been sought for, but without success, owing to the want of a process by which the colors used could be rendered supple, and not liable to crack when the goods painted with them were made up into ladies’ dresses, curtains, etc. By this invention, the satin, or other material, preserves its suppleness intact; the colors are bright and clean, and have the power of refracting the different tints of the material upon which the picture is painted, thereby producing a novel and .beautifal effect. Another merit of this process is that the colors do not become faint or. dull by exposure to the air, but seem to gain increased brilliancy after the silks, and satins, on which they have. been used, have beenjcept for^ years. &UZ8&, Price, per Bottle, . ... - - Sl.00 Brush Cases. This American Ink is strictly an American Product, being produced ac- cording to a new formula, by a new proces8,and with new apparatus. It is much finer, more intensely black, and more perfectly fluid than India or any other iDk. The finest lines of the most intense blackness, may be drawn with it continuously; aqd it will work longer in the pen without cleaning or refilling, than any known Ink. It is not a solid ink ground up, but is a New Native Ink, made fluid from the outset; and it will never become gel- atinous, thick, or offensive, or deposit carbon, like all so-called “Liquid Inks” with which Draughtsmen have been heretofore afflicted. It thus fills the long-felt want of Draughtsmen. A Perfect Liquid Ink. Always ready. Always good. This Ink is put up in a special bottle (see cut), with a device for filling the pen superior to the usual brush, and is thus ready for instant use, and is sold at the popular Price per Bottle, .26 To suit different kinds of drawing, Mid meet the preferences of some Draughtsmen, two kinds of ink are supplied, viz.: General Drawing Ink — (Red Seal.) Which Is suitable for all general drawing, whether llne9 or tints! or for pen or brush work. This quality is almost Identical with the finer kinds of India Ink, but is much preferable in being already fluid, aud In being finer and blacker. It flows very smooth and firm, and will work well on any drawing surface, In either fine or heavy lines. Waterproof Drawing Ink ---(Black Seal). This Ink Is best for all working, architectural, map, or other drawing designed to stand moisture, rough handling or washing over with colors. Lines drawn with this Ink will resist washlug immediately after drying. It is not recom- mended for brush shading, but for lining or solid black work is superb. It Is the best ink for Whatman’s or other hard papers, on which it flows freely, giving fine, solid black lines, and la more limpid than the General. If desired, a special ink for Brush Shading with a biuelsh tone can be furnished to order. For tracings, the General or Waterproof Is recommended. For Patent Office or other Photo-Drawings the General Is usually recommended, but the Water- proof may also be used. These two qualities will enable any kind of work to be executed with satisfaction. If required, these inks may be ftirnlshed also in a pasty or solid condition, and may be readily dissolved in water to the desired density, no grinding being necessary. These Liquid Inks are all put up at standard density sufficient for the blackest or strongest drawing, and their use thus Insures uniform work. For some kinds of drawings, however, 1 the ink may be diluted, If desired, but it is not recom- mended. Higgins’ Carmine Ink, - 60 Higgins’ Blue Ink, , v . Used and endorsed by the U. S. Government Engineers. This Ink Is comparatively new, and as a substitute for India Ink it has many advantages and is much cheaper. , It is jet black. Water will not blur It. Acids or chemicals will not remove it. It is always ready for use and does away with the disagreeable task of having to be rubbed dowD ’* as is the case with India Ink. Colors can be put over It without blurring in the least. When used in the ruling pen, it should occasion- ally be wiped out. as any Ink that is made to dry as readily, and has as heavy a body as this will natually clog up if left to dry in the pen. A new Detail Drawing Paper introduced by us in place of Manila Paper, has met with great success. It Is tough, hard, and uniform In grain and finish, stands erasing, and takes ihk and water color perfectly. The buff or cream color Is very agreeable to the eye and admits of handling without soiling. This paper will be welcomed by all who are tired of using Manila paper for drawing. Although the price per pound is much above that of Manila, the paper Is so much lighter, owing to the entire absence of mineral adulterations, that there Is hardly any difference in the price per yard.
