WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS 5 Directions for Measuring Awnings ROPE HOIST AWNINGS. First —Determine the places where the joints of the Awning Frame will be fastened to the building at 2 in diagram, and be sure to make it 7 ft. to 8 ft. from the sidewalk, according to the height of front. A 12- inch curtain will drop below and you must allow clearance for heads of pedestrians. Second —Measure from point 2 to point 1 in the diagram, which should be on frame of building above the windows. This measurement represents height of awning. Third —Measure from point 2 to point 3 in the diagram. This measurement should be the same as I to 2 on a high front, but on a low front, by using Slide Rods and Balance Arms, it can be from 1 ft. to twice the distance from 1 to 2. Four— Measure from point 3 to point 4 in the diagram. This measurement should be taken from center of columns, and is the width of the front. Five —If the top projects beyond the face of building or is back out of level, mention how much. Six —State whether joints are to be fastened to stone, brick, iron, or wood, and whether the door posts on face of building or outer columns are in line, also whether the frame requires three or more or less joints or bars. In ordering a new cover for an old frame state whether the front bar is iron or wood, and give exact length. BEVEL COG GEAR ROLLER AWNINGS or AUTOMATIC BALANCE ARM AWNINGS The measurements are the same as those for the Rope Heist Awn¬ ings with one exception. The awn¬ ing is seven inches shorter than the roller, and such an allowance should be made in taking the measure¬ ments at 3 and 4 in diagram. IMPORTANT— In ordering a new cover, give height, 1 to 2, ex¬ tension, 2 to 3, and exact length of the front rod, 3 to 4; also dis¬ tance from one edge to reinforced "strips for center support—if more than one, give distance from center to center of each. WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS Full directions for measuring on page 5. .Lower Bracket (JNo. 2—hee Diagram 5) should be about 7 ft. from walk ROLLER AWNINGS LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THE OLD STYLE ROPE HOIST AWNINGS (illustrated on pagell.) —There are no ropes or pulleys to wear out—they operate much easier, and they look much neater. The cut shows how the end wings are attached, the upper end to the building directly under the roller, and the “break” in the awning shows how the outer corner fastens to the front rod. The end arm or bar passes through a pocket on the inside of the end wing. These awnings are made with or without end wings. We always send end wings unless otherwise specified. Lower Bracket (No. 2—See Diagram I'age 5) should he about 7 ft. from walk. This style of fixture is for use where the extension is greater than the height of the awning. By its use the awning can be made to extend way out over the sidewalk even when the store front is very low. The illustration shows the balance arm and its operation in the slide rod whereby the increased projection is accomplished. Made with or without end wings. End wings always sent unless otherwise specified. Some store fronts are so low that even this fixture will not serve, in which case it is necessary to use a fixture like our Anton Lateral Arm, shown on page 10. This fixture in action resembles the human arm. It folds back as the awning is pulled up and is not visible, being hidden by 'he cur¬ tain. This lateral arm supplies a lougfelt , want in the awning business, be¬ cause it allows such a great pro¬ jection over the walk and it will operate perfectly when placed on the building only !S feet from the walk. The T.ater.il Arm is particularly adapted to store fronts when the awning is to be placed below prism glass and the short height (1 to 2 in diagram on page 5) makes it im¬ possible to use the balance arms and Side rods (illustrated on page 8). They can lie placed on tlie cross frame between the plate glass and the prism glass and as low as S feet from the u T alk, but the cross piece to which the arm is fastened must he solid. Only two lateral arms are neces¬ sary for awnings of -11 feet or less In width and the cost will run (from $l(i to $22) more than the cost of an ordinary roller awning. If your store has a very low front, and the awnings must set low on account of prism glass, write us for full particulars and complete .prices, sending a rough sketch with dimensions. WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS ROPE HOIST AWNINGS Regulation “Pull Up” Style with Pulleys and Itopes (Standard design for Store Fronts and Porches) Full Directions for Measuring given on Page o. Lower part ot Frame should be about 7 ft. 6 in. from walk. The opening in the awning above show the pulleys and joints and below how the ropes are reefed. Following this principle you can have a more or less number of ropes or you can have them run down at the ends in place of the center by a simple readjustment. When the height and extension are not the same this style of awning is made with “slide rods” and automatic balance arms (as illustrated on page 8). DIRECTIONS FOR PUTTING UP ROLLER AWNINGS Determine the place where the upper gear brackets that hold each end of the roller are to be attached, and after se¬ curely fastening them draw a line across from journal box at each end, and fasten the center support half way between the end brackets. However, if there is more than one center support, the location of them should be determined by measuring the distance between the reinforcements that are on the under side of awning cover. There is a double thickness of cloth where each center support comes, so that it will wear double the length of time. Then secure the crank box at proper place (they will work on either side) connecting it with upper gear end of roller. The awning frame is then placed in position same as rope hoist awning. Then tack the cloth to roller, being careful to get it in a straight line, so it will roll up evenly. For drilling in brick use J/ 2 -inch gas pipe with saw teeth in end, and by tapping it gently and turning it slowly, you can soon make a perfect hole for expansion bolts that come with the awning. 14 WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS RESIDENCE AWNINGS The women folks of your family deserve consideration when the question of home comfort is involved. HOW TO MAKE MEASURE¬ MENTS On square windows give meas¬ urements taken from window frame, 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4. On curved top windows give such sketch of window, giving dimen¬ sions from 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and also the distances 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 as shown on square top window. The height of the awn¬ ing should he about one-lialf height of the window. For Porch Awnings see pages 12 and 13. in WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS SLEEPING PORCH DROP CURTAINS (Health is wealth. Get a set and live long-er and happier). WALLEN'S FELL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS 17 SLEEPING PORCH CURTAINS On the opposite page we illustrate our sleeping porch curtains. We make them two ways: The curtains at the right and back are fastened at top rolls from the bottom only, and are made with eyelets at top to attach with screw eyes, and roller at bottom. The cords are attached at top on outside, a proper distance from the ends, and pass down the outside of curtain underneath the roller and back up to glass ring on the inside at top, then both cords lead to a cleat to fasten. By pulling the two cords the curtain will roll up snugly at the top. The one at the left shows the curtain dropped half way, so it will obscure the view and still let in the fresh air. It operates the same as the other, with the exception that it re¬ quires two sets of ropes as shown in the illustration. One set to raise and lower the entire curtain. A Tent should be easy to set up. It should shed heavy rains and stand securely in a wind storm. It should keep out insects and cold draughts, but let in the fresh air. It should be cool and airy on summer days and warm and dry at night, and above all, it should be made to last. Regarding weight and quality of duck used in tents. While by far the greater number are made of single filled duck (which is cheaper), we recommend Double Filled Duck at least 10 ounces in weight, and 29 inches wide. The use of 36-inch or 40-inch material such as is substituted by some concerns means that although you are saving 25 to 35 per cent on the original cost, you are getting a tent that will not last and will not shed water. The practice of making tents under standard size is also a means of fooling the buyer with a seeming low price. It should be apparent to every one that a tent made of cheap, light weight material and short in height so that the roof does not have the necessary pitch, is not in any way to be compared with those of better quality for satis¬ factory service and length of life. It is, therefore, economy to purchase the honestly made standard dimension tent. One of the greatest pleasures in camping is reached when one lies at night under taut canvas, with a storm roaring outside, and feeling that no water will get through and no wind can blow HIS tent down. A fly or extra roof, is not only desirable but almost a necessity, as it is an additional protection against rain. It also makes the tent cooler in warm weather and warmer in cold weather. A sod cloth is also advisable, as it keeps out draught, insects and other pests. This is a strip about nine inches wide sewed to the bottom of the tent on the inside. It can be held down by stones or earth. DEMAND THAT YOUR TENT BE MADE STANDARD IN SIZE AND MATERIAL 19 WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS REGULAR WALL TENTS (See next page). (The most popular and serviceable style Tent made). Fully seventy-five per cent of all kinds of tents used in this country are regular wall tents. For an all purpose tent there is nothing their equal. They are roomy and as they have guy ropes at every seam on the sides, they will stand high winds better than any other style. The “Wallen” name stands for an honest quality, made of 29-inch duck instead of 36-inch or 40-inch, and the measurements are guaranteed to be full standard size as listed. It is on this style tent that the cheap manufacturer pulls the wool over the eyes of the tent buyer, by substituting an 8, 10 or 12 oz. duck 36 or 40 inches wide instead of 29 inches (a difference of 25 per cent to 35 per cent in the price of duck) and by making the dimensions short of standard in height of center six to eighteen inches (a difference of 15 per cent to 20 per cent in the amount of material). Note This A tent 9/ 2 ft. wide should be l/i ft. high in the center, and have 3 ft. walls. A tent 12 ft. wide should be 8 ft. high in the center, and have 3/i ft. walls. A tent 14 ft. wide should be 9 ft. high in the center and have 4 ft. walls. When higher walls are wanted, the height in center should be increased accordingly, thus preserving the necessary pitch that will turn the water. Insist on 29-inch duck in the weight you want and insist on standard dimensions if you want your money’s worth in Tent Service. We would prefer to have our customers say: “They made me a good tent,” rather than to say: “They made me a cheap tent at a low price.” WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS 20 REGULAR WALL TENTS TENT FLIES Tent flies are a necessity where comfort is sought. They serve two purposes: First, they will make almost any tent water-proof, as when the rain hits the fly, it breaks its force, and if any does go through the fly it will run off the tent; second, as the tent fly touches the tent at the ridge only, it allows an air space between, making the inside of the tent much cooler. We make many flies to extend over front of tent, far enough to provide a good dining room. Prices on flies are one half price of tent of corresponding size and material. WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS WHY PRICES DIFFER The following facts are of vital importance to you as a buyer of any article made of canvas. The cotton duck used in the making of tents, awnings and other allied articles, can be purchased by manufactur¬ ers in the following widths and weights per lineal yard: 29 inches wide, per yard, in 8, 10 or 12 oz. weights. 36 inches wide, per yard, in 8, 10 or 12 oz. weights. 40 inches wide, per yard, in 8, 10 or 12 oz. weights. A 36-in duck weighing 10 oz. is approximately 25% lighter than a 29-in. duck weighing 10 oz. The substitution of unbranded 8-oz. duck as 10-oz., etc., and the use of 36-in. and 40-in. duck in place of 29-in duck is the big reason for the 25% to 30% lower prices quoted by some manufacturers, but there is another reason, name¬ ly, SHORT SIZES—or making the goods short of standard measurement in height and width. Taking 6 inches off the center of a tent decreases the pitch of the roof and it will not shed the water so well with even a heavier material. By cutting down the height in the center and the height of the walls it makes a difference of nearly 20% in the last. WEDGE OR “A” TENTS SIZE— Height —Single Filling— —Double Filling— —U. S. Without poles, but with ridge, it can be set up between two trees or posts. This does away with the necessity of carrying anything but the tent, which can be packed in small space. These tents are used by hunters, prospectors and others who wish to reduce the load carried to a minimum. 28 WALLEN S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS AMAZON TENTS WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS 21 * AMAZON TENTS SIZE— Height of Pole Height of Wall 8-oz. After a generation of folly in trying to “fool the people,” they have come to realize that even a tent and awning business can be more successful by giving honest goods at a fair margin of profit, than to manufacture cheap, shoddy goods at a low price. Why not buy your goods from a concern which has materially aided in bringing about these conditions? For more than thirty years we have fought for honesty in the tent and awning business in this trade territory, and intend to continue the same policy for another thirty years if necessary. •t:y WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS MINER’S TENTS WALLEN’S FULL WEIGHT CANVAS PRODUCTS 4 : MINERS’TENTS Height Height —SINGLE FILLING— —DOUBLE FILING— —U. Seven feet is al¬ lowed for each team, thus a tent 42 feet long will hold six teams on each side, facing each other from opposite sides of the tent, the mangers being placed down the center of the tent, between the two rows of horses. Canvas mangers are furnished if desired, at an additional cost, or the common feed bag can be used for grain, the hay being placed on the ground. These Tents are easily set up, being provided with tackle for hauling the lines taut when the poles and canvas are up. An entrance is placed at the right of each end, the covering of which can be used to form an awning.
