Fifteen acres of ground are covered with buildings constructed of steel, brick and glass, and there is j over one-half mile of railroad track upon the premises. Raw materials are unloaded j directly from the cars into the various buildings, and the completed product is loaded i into the cars from the Shipping Building. The men employed in this plant are experts in their various departments, and are of long experience. Over twenty per cent of the employees have been connected with the organization for terms ranging from twelve to forty-two years each, and typical of these we show below the pictures of the Factory Superintendent, ar^' of the Foremen of various departments, giving the name of each, and the number of vears of the service of each. 1 F. No other manufacturer of such chairs makes his own castings, but in the manufacture of KOKEN chairs we begin at the very beginning, and the carload of pig iron, and of coke, etc., that are dumped into this Foundry Building from the railroad cars on our own track find their way through the various buildings and departments illustrated upon the following pages. Pig iron is transformed into a barbers’ chair on our own premises. This foundry is equipped with all of the latest machinery particularly adapted to our special needs. Cores and moulds come from machines of various types, and when the molten iron from the cupola is poured, as it is every afternoon, the visitor to the plant views a busy scene. The building is so designed that there is a complete absence of dangerous and objectionable gases and fumes which often, in foundries, endanger the health of the men. Ours is a daylight foundry. THE icojK eN ipe^m t Enameling Department n "r 11 ,E „ o IK E M, _JP, ^ ^ TN OUR ENAMELING DEPARTMENT we porcelain enamel, in white or in colors, those parts of the chair which are to be fin¬ ished in this way. Here the castings are placed in ovens heated to a temperature of 1800 de¬ grees, but exhaust fans and air ducts reduce the temperature of the room to a minimum, so that in spite of this intense heat the workmen work in comparative comfort. In this department we make from chem¬ icals the enamel powder; and the smelters, grinders and mixing machines are a constant source of interest to the visitor to the plant. Here the process of enameling is done in its entirety — from the chemicals to the finished enameled part. In our PLATING DEPi\RTMENT we do chromium plating and nickel plating, and here again one is impressed by the fact that in an endeavor to protect the health of the men every known means is provided for carrying off fumes and dust which are generated by these processes. f H E ICOKEN IPIj-AHT m IS&eSlHEtTMBHiMi V i.m wW\ " "j ■ m\ ■ Ur^U 1 m ■ LH E HrTjjbir m m ■ 'll 1 bsh^hBe Machine Shop T M IE IKOKIEH lPlLiv\NT MACHINE SHOP Bui’ding is equipped throughout with maclunery of most modern type, and much of which has been especially designed for our particular work. Here all of the castings pass through lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and machines of various types, all working with that precision necessary to insure the accurate and easy-working of the lock of the barbers’ chair. In¬ spection and tests are frequent in this department, the various parts being approved as they are made, with a final test and inspection of the complete lock when it is assembled. All of this is very essential to the easy-working qualities of the barbers’ chair, and to its long life. Long experience has proven this, and it is because of rigid care in this department that KOKEN chairs give such long and satisfactory service. In this building is found also our SHEET METAL DE^PARTMENT, in which are made such articles as towel urns, shaving paper vases, sterilizing cabinets, metal tables, etc. H E KO JKE K IPI^AKT T he upholstery department is one of our principal departments, for we have always believed that the upholstered parts are a very essential part of the chair. We are sure that no department has had more careful study than this one, but we have been welT repaid for the time and effort that has been put into it, because KOKEN Chairs are known for their excellence of upholstery. The seat and back of a KOKEN Chair are comfortable, durable, and lasting. This is only because proper materials are used, and proper attention is paid to workmanship. Men in this department are of long experience, and as we make nothing but chairs for barber shops and beauty shops they know exactly how the uphol¬ stered parts of such chairs should be made. W orking conditions in this department are excellent, as indeed they are throughout the plant. Plenty of windows afford an abundance of daylight and fresh air. The foreman of this department has been with us for forty-two years — our oldest employee in point of service. --- - I ■ I - 1 i^gCZ -THE' IC'OJKE:^ ^^Tj'^AW'T'^3^g>- T his assembly department is probably the most interesting to the visi¬ tor. In all of the other buildings only parts of the barbers’ chair are to be seen—and in pro¬ cess of finishing; but here in the Assembly Department the completed barbers’ chair takes form, and through this department there passes a complete chair every ten min¬ utes during every working day throughout the year. It is into this department that the enameled parts come from the Enamel Building, the plated parts from the Plating Building, the upholstered parts from the Up¬ holstery Building, and the locks and other mechanical parts from the Machine Shop. This Assembly Depart¬ ment is one of action, and these various parts pour in from the various buildings, only to pass out quickly in the form of completed chairs. It is in this department that inspection is thorough and most rigid. When the chair is completed it must have the final O.K. of the Chief Inspector before it can pass, and then it goes to the Shipping Building, where it is packed and shipped. In this building barbers’ poles are also assembled. Various parts come together here from various departments, and are assembled into KOKEN Revolving and Illuminated Poles. nr TH[ IR IKOIKET^ IPIj^T^T I N OUR MILL BUILDING we manufacture completely, mirror cases, cabinets and furni¬ ture for barber shop equipment. This building covers two and one-half acres of ground, and is the largest of our group of buildings. Adjacent to the building are our lumberyards, into which are loaded, direct from the railroad cars, lumber of various kinds. The lumber is piled in the yard for periods ranging from two to three years, which insures a thorough air seasoning. After the lumber has been allowed to season in the yard for a proper length of time, it passes through our specially constructed dry kilns, in which every bit of moisture is removed from the lumber. From the dry kilns the lumber passes immediately into the end of the Alill Building in which are installed all kinds of woodworking machinery of modern type. Saws, planers, jointers, sanders, dove-tailing machines, etc., convert the lumber into pieces of proper shape and size which are passed on to cabinet makers. Here men of long experience in this particular work put together all of the various pieces of furniture that go to make equipment of the modern barber shop. (§5L the KOKEN IPE^NT \ O UR WOOD FINISHING DEPART¬ MENT is where all of the cabinets, tables, mirror frames, etc., are enameled in various colors, or receive the finish in varnish that may be required. This department is equipped with spray booths that are modern in type, and which are so constructed that fumes and odors are carried off in air ducts, add¬ ing greatly to the comfort and health of the men. Particular attention is paid to cleanliness so that there is no dust to mar a high class finish. In our ASSEMBLING DEPARTMENT the vari¬ ous parts of the mirror case are brought together and fitted. Into this department comes the wood frames from the Finishing Room, the marble from the Marble Department, enameled parts fi'om the Enameling Department, and nickel plated parts from the Plating Department, and all of these are assembled together into a completed piece of furni¬ ture as it is delivered to the customer. It is in this department that the mirror case is set up com¬ plete, just as it will appear in the barber shop. \\ hen everything has been properly fitted together, all of the parts are numbered, and then the mirror case is taken apart and j^acked for shipment. nr IK OJKEN IPlLi ^VN T |N OUR MARBLE DEPARTMENT we receive blocks of Italian marble direct from Italy. These blocks of marble are especially selected by our own representative at the quarries near Carrara in Italy, and are shipped to us by way of New York or New Orleans. We use only Genuine Italian Marble because long experience has proven that no other marble will do for use in the barber shop. Italian Marble is hard, will not easily stain and takes a high polish. In this department all of the work of cutting, shaping, polishing, and decorating is done. Rubbing beds, polishing machines, and machines for cutting and saw¬ ing the marble are all modern in type and enable us to produce, at the lowest possible cost, marble for barbers’ mirror cases that is the best to be found anywhere in the world. Everything is done in our own building, under our immediate supervision, under working conditions that are most favorable, and the result is a perfect product at a minimum of cost. 1 ^. _ M E icO JKlE ^ ^ IPIJ T Laboratory Department A Strop Department THE IKOIKE?^ ————m ' ' T he shipping building is a busy place. Into this building comes the finished product of the entire plant; chairs and furniture for barber shops and beauty shops, various articles of equipment, razor strops, and laboratory products. In this building these articles are packed for shipment to all parts of the United States, and to the entire world. Railroad cars, which have been switched to the side of the building, are being loaded for various destinations, and it is not unusual to find, being loaded at one and the same time into various cars, shipments bound for not only all points in the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific, but also for such distant countries as China or Japan, New Zealand or Australia, or Argentine and Uruguay in South America. KOKEN Chairs are known all over the entire world, their reputation has spread to all civilized countries. On steamships or railroad trains, in hotels or large office buildings, in Government or State institutions, in large barber shops or in small shops, the KOKEN Chair is found. It is from this Shipping Build¬ ing that the product of this plant starts upon its journey, well packed and ready to give comfort to the barber and his cus¬ tomer, and to render more attractive the modern barber shop. C ASTINGS which are plated with chromium will never tarnish. Changes of temperature, nor dampness, nor contact with chemicals or acids will have any effect upon the brightness of chromium plating. Chromium plating is now being extensively used upon plated parts of automobiles, plumbing fixtures of various kinds and, in fact, is rapidly supplanting nickel plating as a finish for metal. Barbers’ Chairs quoted upon the following pages are furnished with trimmings chromium plated, or nickel plated, as pre¬ ferred. We strongly recommend chromium plating, and the slight additional charge that is made for this is, in our opinion, money well spent. If the trimmings of the barbers’ chair are plated with chromium, they will remain forever bright; they will never require polishing, and the owner of the shop is for¬ ever saved the trouble and expense of this. WTen the barbers’ chair is new, the difference in appearance of the castings whether chromium plated or nickel plated is slight, but after a very short time, unless constantly polished, the nickel plated castings will become dull and tarnished. On the contrary, if the castings are chromium plated they will always be bright and attractive, but require no polishing or attention of any kind. If, therefore, the life of the Barbers’ Chair is taken into consideration, it will be found that the additional cost of having the chair trimmings plated with chromium is only a cent or two per week. U PON the opposite page we illustrate the very latest in Bar¬ bers’ Chairs. This wonderful improvement is a long step for¬ ward, because of the added comfort and convenience to the barber. Whether the barber is tall or short, he finds in this chair absolute comfort, no matter in what work he may be engaged. Upon ordinary hydraulic chairs, short barbers often have to stand on tiptoes, or stretch themselves in order to reach the customer. Upon ordinary hydraulic chairs the tall barber often finds it necessary to stoop over in order to properly do his work. The Super-Hydraulic Barbers’ Chair completely eliminates all of these troubles. In the very lowest position the top of the seat of the Super-Hydraulic Barbers’ Chair is 23V2 inches from the floor, which is about 2 inches lower than the ordinary hydraulic chair. When the Super-Hydraulic Chair is placed at its highest point the top of the seat is 33V2 inches from the floor, and this is fully 3 inches higher than most of the ordinary hydraulic barbers’ chairs now upon the market. This gives a range of 10 inches to the chair, but unlike other chairs on the mar¬ ket with similar range, these Super-Hydraulic Chairs begin at the low point of 23y2 inches from the floor, and which is very much lower than any other chair with similar range. As will be found, these Super-Hydraulic Barbers’ Chairs cost very little more than ordinary hydraulic chairs. Taking into considera¬ tion the life of a barbers’ chair, it will be found that the expenditure of only a cent or two per week will provide a chair that will afford absolute comfort to any barber, whether he is tall or short. All of these chairs are fully equipped with rack for hair-cloth, ring for strops and arm sockets to which can be attached all standard accessories. These chairs are fur 7ii shed with either chromium plated or nickel plated trimmings, as desired. FOR PRICES, SEE ACCOMPANYING PRICE LIST T he chair illustrated on the opposite page is another of our Super-Hydraulic Barbers’ Chairs, and which, at a price that is slightly higher than the ordinary hydraulic chair, is excellent value for the price asked. Super-Hydraulic Chairs can be had in any color of porcelain enamel desired ... white, light blue, jade green, ivory, or black ... and with¬ out additional charge. The trimmings of the chair are nickel plated, but these can be had plated with chromium at a slight extra cost. These chairs are sold either for cash, or upon the deferred payment plan. If it is not convenient for you to pay the entire amount in cash at the time of purchase, these new chairs can be bought for part cash, and payment of the balance is arranged in convenient monthly in¬ stallments. In this way means are provided for equipping the shop with chairs that will help to increase business, and which, therefore, will pay for themselves. It has been the experience of many that the increased revenue of shops modernly furnished has been sufficient to meet the monthly installment so that the equipment hasji^terally paid for itself. If you desire to trade in your old chairs as part payment for these new Super-Hydraulic Chairs, the chair which you now have will be accepted at a fair value. We should be very glad indeed to give full particulars if you will write to us, and we are sure that you will find our proposition an attractive one. It costs more to upholster a seat in this way, but the shape of a pitched seat helps to hold the customer in the proper position to afford the maximum of comfort. Erom the customer’s standpoint, this Super-Hydraulic Barbers’ Chair gives him greater comfort for the reason that it is not neces¬ sary then for the barber to lean over him unduly. With this unusual long range of position, from the very lowest to the very highest point, the barber finds it no longer necessary to stoop or to stretch to put himself into position to do his work. From the standpoint of the barber, this chair is of untold value for health and comfort. At the end of the day’s work the barber knows the difference. All through the day this Super-Hydraulic Chair has placed the customer just where he ought to be and the barber has been saved many stoops and many stretches. This Super-Hydraulic mechanism is a model of precision, with valves so arranged that the chair is easily raised or lowered to the desired position. It locks firmly wherever it is placed. Whether high or low, reclined or upright, the chair is firmly and securely locked by simply returning the lever to a vertical position. Patents have been applied for, and infringers will be vigorously prosecuted. U PON the following pages we show a complete variety of styles, in various colors of enamel or of upholstery. All of these chairs are precisely the same in operation, equipped with the hydraulic mechanism which has made KOKEN chairs famous throughout the world. The difference in price of the various models is because of the difference in style, shape, upholstery, headrest, equipment, etc., but quality can always be depended upon as being of the very best. Every one of these chairs is fitted with precisely the same mechanism controlling its operation. Whether the chair is to be revolved or reclined, or raised or lowered, the operation is easily done with a few movements of the hand lever. And simply returning the lever to its normal position effectively locks the chair in the position in which it has been placed. These chairs are furnished in porcelain enamel of various colors: white, light blue, jade green, ivory or black. The trimmings of the chair are furnished either chromium plated or nickel plated, as desired, and prices of both will be found in the price list accom¬ panying this catalog. KOKEN Barbers’ Chairs are guaranteed. The KOKEN GUARANTY is that if at any time during the life of the chair a casting is broken, the dealer from whom the chair was purchased will furnish a new casting, free of charge. Careful inspection in every department guards against the use of any imperfect material in the manufacture of a KOKEN Barbers’ Chair, but as even the most rigid inspection will not always disclose a casting with a flaw, we fully protect the customer by this guaranty. These chairs are sold either for cash or on the deferred payment plan. This plan of deferred payments makes it possible to refurnish the shop without the expenditure of a great deal of money, and the increased earnings of the refurnished shop will undoubt¬ edly more than take care of the payments as they become due. If you are interested in this plan, we shall be very glad indeed to hear from you, and to give further particulars. No in¬ vestment that a barber can make will pay better returns than that which he makes in new Barbers’ Chairs. More than any other one thing, they impress upon the mind of the customer the fact that the shop is modern, up to date, sanitary and well conducted. This aids good health, and good health always means efficiency. An investment in new barbers’ chairs, therefore, not only brings returns in increased business for the shop, but still greater return in that it contributes to the health and efficiency of all of the barbers. We will trade in your old chairs for new ones. These old chairs possess a certain value, and you will find that the Koken Dealer is ready to make you an allowance for your old chairs that you will find decidedly interesting. This decoration is in bright colors inlaid into the marble in a manner which is durable and lasting. While these Mir¬ ror Cases are exceedingly attractive, they will be found very little higher in price than plain Mirror Cases, but the Color-Inlay Decora¬ tion adds much to the attractiveness of the shop. The marble is imported by us direct from the quarries in Italy, and is of very high grade. We illustrate here the arrangement of cabinets used in Mirror Cases Nos. 931 and 941, which are quoted upon the following pages. The upper cabinet is provided with two glass shelves, shelf “G” being designed to hold a supply of Turkish towels, shelf “H” a sup¬ ply of regular face towels, and shelf “J” ^ supply of hair brushes and lather brushes in paper envelopes, which are rapidly becoming com¬ mon in up-to-date shops. In addition to these there will be found ample room for such other articles as are needed to be kept handy at all times. Space “K” is made with marble shelf, and lined with three mirror plates, and is intended to hold tonic bottles, shaving mug, powder shaker, and such tools as are in constant use. In the lower cabinet, compartments “A” are intended for the sterilization of razors, shears, clippers and other tools; shelf “B” is intended to hold used hair brushes and lather brushes; receptacle “C” is for the used shaving paper; compartment “E” is for soiled towels, and shelf “F” is furnished so that place is provided for holding the head¬ rest of the barbers’ chair when not in use. The interior of both of these cabinets being made of metal and finished in vitreous porcelain enamel, cleanliness is easily possible. Every genuine Mirror Case bears our name. This name will be found stamped upon all of the parts of the Mirror Case, and is worth looking for. This name stamped upon a Mirror Case guarantees the quality of the materials and workmanship. No better Mirror Cases are made, but careful comparison will prove to you that these Mirror Cases of ours cost little, if any, more than others. If you want the genuine, be sure to look for the name. The Koken Bar-Lavo is a much-needed departure from the ordinary business and household type of lavatory. The Barbers’ re¬ quirements of a lavatory are so different from ordinary business, professional and household lavatory needs that the ordinary type of lavatory answers his purpose only as a source of supply for hot and cold water and a drainage system for waste water; nothing more. The Koken Bar-Lavo has a bowl the size and shape of which is de¬ signed primarily for the giving of shampoos and is, therefore, dif¬ ferent in size and shape from any other lavatory bowl on the market. This feature alone means the saving of much time and greatly in¬ creased convenience for both the barber and patron. The top of the Koken Bar-Lavo, as you will note by referring to the illustrations on the opposite page, has moulded-in self-draining receptacles for five articles that are in continuous use by every barber. For want of a better place, the barber has heretofore been forced to keep these ar¬ ticles on the shelf of his mirror case, with the result that his bottle of shampoo liquid, mug, brush, etc., which are always dripping with water and soap, are a source of continual annoyance because of the unsightly, unsanitary, wet and messy spot where they stand. The Koken Bar-Lavo, with its self-draining, built-in receptacles, gives you a clean, sanitary place for the very articles that have here¬ tofore caused your shelf to look wet and dirty regardless of the amount of careful cleaning you have done. The deep moulded-in receptacles keep these articles from sliding around and getting into positions where they can be either knocked off on the floor or into the bowl. Al¬ ways have hands dry when emptying capsule, otherwise it becomes too slippery to hold. Chloro-Zol Powder (in capsules) is a syn¬ thetic chlorine-carrying chemical. It is a most powerful antiseptic and germicide, hav¬ ing many times the germicidal power of phenol (carbolic acid), or formaldehyde, yet being virtually non-poisonous. No recently discovered germicide has created more in¬ terest among physicians and others. Sterilizing Combs, Brushes, Etc. For sterilizing combs, brushes, and various utensils; first wash them thoroughly with hot water and soap, or hold them under the hot water faucet. Then empty contents of one capsule in one quart of water and immerse combs, brushes, etc., for ten or fifteen min¬ utes. Wipe dry and place in dry sterilizer until needed.
