Imperial Porcelain Lavatories ¥ Established in 1828 Copyright, 1900, by The J. L. Mott Iron Works The J. L. Mott Iron W orks 84-90 Beekman Street, New York Branches 103 Fifth Ave., N. Y. 378 Boylston St., Boston 112S Walnut St., Philadelphia 91 1 Locust St., - St. Louis P'lood Building, San Francisco Merchants' Loan and Trust Building, Chicago THE J.L.MOTT IRON WORKS * Imperial Porcelain I/tiperial Porcelain , in its application to plumbing appliances, has long since passed beyond the experimental stage ; indeed, it is unquestionably the ideal, and as such is now being exclusively employed in the best private and public buildings. It was ear lx in the So ' s that we began the importation from England of Imperial Porcelain; and, while its merits were appreciated, yet the English manufacturers did not possess the art of producing the ware in the artistic shapes and designs or of the high quality produced by us to-day. The _ year 180/J. marked a?i epoch in the manufacture of sanitary appliances in the United States, viz., the establishing of our Imperial Porcelain Works in Trenton, N. J. Immediate im- provement over the English ware was the result, but it was not until 1896 that what was practically a revolution took place. Our original works burned down to be superseded by a plant that is the most complete and perfect in existence and which enables us to produce Imperial Porcelain so superior in quality as to enable us to export it largely to England and the continent of Europe. This is indeed like “sending coals to Newcastle" and is perhaps unparalleled in the history of American manufactures. The requirements of modern plumbing are such that the various appliances must not onlv be of a high standard from a sanitary standpoint, but also artistic in design and construction. Our unequaled success in this direction has been largely due to the fact that we have always kept this idea in view. The outcome has been that the bath room of to-day constitutes a primary feature in the “ House Beautiful," and no factor has contributed more to this condition than Imperial Porcelain. A THE J.L.MOTT IRON WORKS 5 Imperial Porcelain Lavatories Custom and tradition have been deservedly swept aside by the supplanting of marble lavatories by those of Imperial Porcelain. Evolutions of consecjuence are as a rule gradual, and it is seldom that one article that takes the place of another is so immeasurably superior as is the Imperial Porcelain Lavatory to all that have preceded it. No matter what the point of view, the Imperial Porcelain Lavatory stands out boldly and strongly as the very best thing of its kind yet produced. ‘ The advantages of the Imperial Porcelain Lavatory may be divided in two classes, viz., sanitary and those of appearance. Among the former are its glazed surface, rendering it non-absorbent and unstai nable. The slab and basin are in one piece, obviating the joints so objectionable in the marble lavatory. As to its appearance, no description can do justice to the beautiful glaze, and its color, a soft china white — so desirable in a sanitary appliance, as it appeals both to the eye and to the judgment. In shape and design the Imperial Porcelain admits of effects utterly impossible with marble. To those who intend buildmg and can visit either of our showrooms in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago, no words of praise from us are necessary — the lavatories will speak for themselves. When, however, it is not possible to give us the pleasure of a visit, we feel that a careful examination of this catalogue will convince the most skeptical that for all classes of buildings, for the residential mansion and for the high class hotel, there is but one lavatory, and that is the Imperial Porcelain. As a matter of fact, the china-white glaze of the lavatory is peculiarly adapted to receive not only the “ Colonial ” decoration of Plate 4034-R, but all the others that follow. It is in the possibilities of decoration that one of the numerous advantages of imperial porcelain over marble is manifest. The only available place for decoration in a marble .lavatory is inside the basin. The imperial porcelain lavatory admits of decoration on the outside, the back and the legs, with either none at all in the basin or merely a suggestion of the general design. Notice. — The artistic shapes and designs and decorations of the imperial porcelain lavatories are the outcome of considerable time, experiment and expense. They are all either patented or patent applied for. Any infringement of our rights will be promptly and rigorously prosecuted. THE J. The lavatory occupies but a minimum of space, yet, in common with all our imperial porcelain lavatories, it has a very large basin compared to the size of the slab. The tile finishes on the raised rim on the back of the lavatory, bringing the joint an inch or more above the level of the slab, a most important feature. Nothing can exceed the effect of neatness and cleanliness produced by the combination of the china- white glaze of the lavatory and the tiled wall. The imperial porcelain standard is entirely in harmony with the lavatory, and as it takes the place of a nickel-plated brass leg, the necessity of cleaning and polishing the latter is obviated — indeed, in any large building, the servant’s time saved in cleaning the metal legs will pay for the lavatory in a year or less. The lavatories are preferably placed two inches apart ; they can, however, be placed closer together if desired. No lavatory, either marble or enameled iron, is to be compared with the “Tremont” imperial porcelain for use in public buildings, hotel wash rooms, schools, factories, in fact, under any conditions where a number of lavatories are set up in a row. The entire arrangement is sanitary-perfect. The lavatories stand free from the wall ; there is a space between each lavatory, thus there are absolutely no joints or recesses. The legs, which are of iron, preferably painted white-enamel, have cross pieces, with nickel-plated brass wall attachments, which extend back to the wall and afford a firm, rigid support. Of course, a tiled or enameled brick wall makes the best job, but it may be plastered if expense is a consideration. A row of these lavatories with their bright china-white glaze against a background of tile or enamel brick conveys an idea of appropriateness, cleanliness and neatness that must impress whomsoever sees them. The “ Colonial ” are glazed a light buff and we recommend them for institutions where a strong, cleanly and durable lavatory is desired. 65 THE J.L.MOTT IRON WORKS * 66 THE J.L.MOTT IRON WORKS Plate -{Oj/ - R The “ Crescent " Lavatory Class A Class 13 “Colonial’ Lavatory — The “ Crescent,” imperial porcelain, with “ Hygeia ” patent waste (plug and chain), iron standard painted white-enamel, nickel- plated low-down compression faucets with china name plates, price of single lavatory . . $28 75 $23 75 $22 75 If with back, as Plate 4012-R, add . . . 475 375 3 2 5 Xickel-plated brass adjustable trap for iron pipe, extra . . . 4 00 Brass waste pipe and 2-inch trap, as Plate 4012-R, for set of two, nickel-plated, extra . . . . . . . . . 1 3 75 Same, rough brass . . . . . . . 10 00 For each additional lavatory, nickel-plated . . . 3 75 Same, rough brass . . . . . . . . . . 3 2 5 If with bronzed iron standard, deduct ...... 50 Dimensions: Length from right to left, 22 inches; width from front to back, 1 8)4 inches. The feature of the arrangement is that each person washes in running water, which, in the case of school children, is particularly desirable, as it eliminates the possibility of contagion and prevents them washing in water that has previously been used. There is no waste plug, the outlet being always open, consequently the lavatory requires no overflow. It is advisable to fit one lavatory in each range with a faucet for the convenience of those who might wish to wash during the hours when the main supply is not turned on. THE J.LMOTT IRON WORKS 3 > Plate 382-R Section of Mott’s patent self-closing basin faucet, nickel- plated, per pair 5 S 00 Plate 3S2-R closes with the pressure, consequently the strength of the spring is a minimum as compared with faucets which close against the pressure. In the latter case the spring must be very heavy and requires the exertion of great power to open the faucet, whereas Mott’s patent can be opened and held open without effort. It has been satisfactorily tested, and we strongly recommend it to those who desire a strictly first-class self-closing faucet. It is regularly made with wheel handle, as shown, so that by no means can it be permanently kept open when not actually in use. If preferred, we furnish it with other forms of handle. The stand pipe can be taken out and cleaned with the same facility as an open standing waste, and without the use of any tool whatever. The “ Primus " is a novel combination of supply with our celebrated “ Unique ” waste. Cold and hot water may be drawn separately, or tepid water may be obtained by opening both the cold and hot water valves. The low-down supply is prefera- ble to the ordinary faucets, which project into the basin, and are more or less in the way. There is but little brass work above the slab to be kept clean. The fine ap- pearance of the “ Primus ” combination is enhanced by the beautiful china handles, which are preferable to metal for the reason that the platin Plate 374-R 4 4 Primus Combination Supply and Waste ( Fuller Valves •with China Handles ) g wears off of the latter by constant use. 79 THE J.LMOTT IRON WORKS > Sect ion nl I r ieics of Lavatories, vcith “ Nassau ” and “ Hygeia ” Wastes Plate jojo-R Section of Imperial Porcelain Lavatory, nvith il Natsau" Watte (Patented) Simplicity and directness of operation characterize the “ Nassau " waste.
