AVERY LIBRARY The above illustration shows the appearance of our METAL SLATES when laid on a roof. Cortright Metal Slates. We have given the name Slates to the style of covering shown here, because in the manner of laying and in the effect produced, it as nearly corresponds with slate as with anything else with which i{ may be compared. Our Metal Slates have the important advantages of being laid more easily and quickly than any metal shingle or roofing in the market, and of giving better protection than any other covering, while also making a more orna- mental roof, closely re- sembling the round - point- ed slate and w'ood shin- gles now so popular. These Metal Slates have been in use since 1SS7, a n d have made a won- derful reputa- tion through- out the Unit- ed States. This cut shows Metal Slates in connection with Roll-Ridge Coping, Plain Hip-Cover- ing and Valley. The Metal Slat-s are made in the three following sizes: 14 x 20 inches, requiring 6S slates to cover a square (too square feet), io x 14 “ “ 141 “ “ “ “ “ “ 7 x 10 “ “ 297 “ The METAL SLATES are suitable for roofs with a pitch of three or more inches to a foot, 3 Cortright Victoria Shingles. Group of Victoria Shingles, showing method of laying. The most prominent feature of the Victoria Shingles is the embossing, which is very high, and distinct enough for its ornamental character to be clearly seen on any building from the ground. They were introduced in 1892, and have been received with increasing favor by the leading archi- tects, builders, and owners. They are suitable for roofing all first-class struc- tures, and especially desirable where the effect of clay tiles is wanted without great weight. To those wishing to obtain an ornamental roof at a moderate cost, and one which is at the same time fireproof, durable, and easily put on, these shingles are particularly recommended. The Victoria Shingles are made in the two following sizes: 10 x 14 inches, Requiring 148 shingles to cover a square (100 square feet). 7 x 10 “ “ 319 The VICTORIA SHINGLES are suitable for roofs having a pitch of three or more inches to a foot. The Valuable and Important Features of both Metal Slates and Victoria Shingles Cut i.— Represents side-lock, full size, showing first position in laying slate or shingle on roof. Are the SIDE-LOCK, a patent expansive joint which can- not become unhooked after being laid (see cuts Nos. i and 2). THE TOP AND BOTTOM WEATHER JOINT which provides perfectly against rain, snow, and wind (see cut 3). The raised platform below three steps (or corrugations), at the top of each slate or shin 3), being level with the top of the side-lock, allows a perfectly straight tight joint to be made across the side-lock by the straight lower edge of the slate or shingle above, instead of the very objectionable old method of other shingles which raise up over the side-lock. The lower edge of this slate or shingle being straight without a break in passing over the side-lock , leaves no opening for snow or rain to beat under. They can be laid more accurately than any other metal shingles, as in locking them there is no danger of leaving them unhooked at any point, the lock being always in view , and so constructed as to throw the slate or shingle square with the preceding one. The courses, if started straight, are easily kept so. They are laid begin- ning at the lower left-hand corner of the roof and working to the right and upward, as in the usual method of laying roofs. The Metal Slates and Victoria Shingles have exactly the same side-lock, and top and bottom weather joint Cut 2. — Represents side-lock, full size, showing slate or shin- gle laid in place. the lowest of the le (see cut No. 6 Cortright Patent Ridge-Coping No Nail-Heads Exposed to the Weather. SKWJHSSSS.. The above shows section of roof and gable covered with our Metal Slates, in connection with Patent Ridge- Coping. Our Patent Ridge-Coping Is made either Plain or with an ornamental Roll, from one piece of metal, folded as shown above, pro- ducing a stormproof covering, the shingles or slates being inserted into the folds over the vailing flanges , thus protecting the nail- heads from the weather. Both the Roll and Plain Ridge-Coping are suitable for use with either the Metal Slates or Victoria Shingles. 7 Cortright Patent Hip-Covering. Our Patent Hip-Covering is made of one piece of metal, Plain or with Roll, and applied in such a manner as to make an absolutely stormproof covering. The Hip-Covering is laid from the top downward, the lower end having projecting pieces for nailing, over which the top end of the next piece below is inserted, thus covering and concealing the nails. When our Metal Slates are used on roofs having hips, we advise covering the hips with either our Plain or Roll Hip-Covering. Victoria Hip-Covering. f or use with our \ ictoria Shingles we have a special covering for Hips, which is made with a raised figure in the centre to correspond with the embossing of the shingles. No other covering for the hips will answer the purpose so well as this ; therefore it is important in ordering \ ictoria Shingles, to state if there are any hips in roof ; if so, give the length. 8 The Cortright Patent Valley. THE BEST VALLEY KNOWN. The Cort- right Patent Valley is made so that the shingles or slates will lock over the folds, giving perfect protection against w a t e r washing up or under slates or shingles at sides of valley. The folds allow amply for ex- _ pansion and contra ction. Two folds are formed on each side so as to give double protection against storms. The slates and shingles must be locked over the larger fold nearest the centre of valley. The sections are so constructed as to slip together easily on the roof, cannot guarantee satisfactory results at the valleys unless our patent valley is use connection with our slates and shingles, on roofs where any valley is required. This valley also makes a good finish for stone-slate or wooden shingles, which be laid overlapping the flanges. The flange insures the ventilation and drying of metal in the valley at all times. Gable-End Finish is recommended in using our Victoria Shingles to make a neat, stormproof finish, but it is not essential with our Metal Slates, which can be turned over berge board and nailed neatly. SIDING. Both the Metal Slates and Victoria Shingles are suitable for siding all build- ings where a fireproof, ornamental, and durable finish is required. The small size, particularly, is especially adapted for siding gables, upper stories, and ornamental bands around buildings, and many other places in which architects introduce shingle work.
