SUCCESSORS TO MAXWELL FORBES & STILLMAN COMPANY Architectural Ornaments IN EXTERIOR and INTERIOR COMPOSITION, WOOD, CEMENT, ETC. MILWAUKEE, WIS. 1909 2 MAXWELL , FORBES & STILLMAN CO. PREFACE T HIS catalogue contains a greatly enlarged col¬ lection of Architectural Ornaments which we have spared no pains or expense to make cor¬ rect in detail and proportions. Wherever changes have been made in prices, we beg to announce that all former price lists are void if they conflict with those contained herein. Our ornaments are made in the following ma¬ terials : EXTERIOR COMPOSITION —Warranted to stand any climate and not to crack or shrink if prop¬ erly protected with white lead and oil paint. INTERIOR PLASTER COMPOSITION OR STAFF—For use in connection with ornamental plaster. Where not specially noted, prices on this material are same as “Exterior." PORTLAND CEMENT—Casts in this material will be found equal to stone in hardness and durability. On p. 93-94 will be found ornaments specially suited for this material. We will quote prices, however, on application, on any other ornaments, either con¬ tained in this catalogue or from special designs. INTERIOR—The caps, brackets, etc., quoted under this head are made up with wood body and abacus; ornamental parts in wood composition; made to match any wood. In ordering, state kind of wood desired. The prices on “Interior" caps, brackets and similar ornaments are given for plain oak and birch: for quartered oak, red birch and all other native woods, an additional 20 % will be charged. For the rare woods, of course, special prices must be quoted. For work which is to be painted, we usually furnish birch. The cuts for capitals are shown for the round or column cap only. We can also furnish square caps to match, in any style or size, at same prices, unless otherwise stated. Pilasters are ((noted as costing 6o% of full caps. This is to be understood as applying to pilasters which are equal to one-half or less than one-half of full cap; pil¬ asters equalling more than half of full cap will he charged as full caps. MAXWELL , LORBES STILLMAN CO. 3 I 3 REF A CE Con tin ued We also make a large variety of “INTERIOR” ornaments, see pages 88-89, f° r furniture, interior finish, etc., and will quote prices on any special ornaments desired. We also furnish a great variety of flat ornaments in this composition, see pages 101 to 142, which may he mounted on wood, plaster, canvas or almost any surface as per directions given upon application. This material is sharp in detail; is very easy to handle, is pliable, and can be made to conform to curved surfaces when fresh, but becomes very hard when exposed to the air. We undertake special work in modelling, pattern work for ornamental metal cast¬ ings, wood carving, furniture, etc. The cuts at the beginning of this Preface are from wood carvings turned out by us. We will also quote prices on ornamental plastering, including running work and setting cast work in public and private buildings. We will send, on application, details showing exact size or profile of any orna¬ ments we have, showing their position in relation to other ornaments or to mouldings run in place. We have many models which are not shown in this catalogue, and are constantly accumulating new ones. We will he pleased to send cuts of anv ornaments we have which are not contained herein. 4 MAXWELL, LORBES & STILLMAN CO. Instructions for Ordering In our catalogue the “diameter” of all capitals and “width" of pilaster caps is the diameter of column at neck, shown in diagram at A. The height is shown at B. In ordering pilaster caps, give width of column at neck, shown at A; height, as shown at B; also return of column, as shown at D. State, also, whether an ordinary pilaster, as shown at F, is desired, or corner pilaster, as shown at E. The core of column, G, should extend through the cap about to 34 inch, to carry the weight of superstructure. The thickness of our material for exterior caps varies from l" in a 6" cap to 2" in a 24" cap, so that the core should he from 2" to 4" less in diameter than neck of column, making core for 8" cap about 6" diameter, and for 12" cap about 9 y 2 " diameter. Our interior caps have a solid wood body, and rest squarely on top of column. In measuring columns for caps, give diameter at neck, not at base or thickest part. MAX IVELL, LORBES & STILLMAN CO. 5 INSTRUCTIONS Diagram showing method of putting up cast cornices, beams, etc. Furring strips AA, about ^"x2", similar to grounds for ordinary plastering are nailed to joists or studding so that the outer or lower edge comes about ]/a" inside of edge of beam or cornice. Lathing and plastering is then done using the strips as grounds so that the plaster finishes flush with face of strip. On old work where it is impossible or inconvenient to nail the strips directly to joists, they may be nailed on the surface of plaster but must be set farther back from edge of cornice or beam, as indicated by dotted lines, their position to be deter¬ mined by the thickness and profile of cornice or beam. The casts may then be put up with screws sunk into the surface and penetrating into the wood strips; the heads of screws should be touched with shellac, to prevent rust showing through and then the screw holes and joists flushed over and pointed with plaster paris. Casts may also be put up on plastered surfaces without screws or nails, by wetting thoroughly both cast and plaster surface, applying freshly gauged plaster paris to edges or parts coming in contact with plaster, and pressing, bracing or nail¬ ing in position till plaster paris is set enough to hold. Coves may be put up quickly and accurately in the manner shown at right hand of cut:—by setting the edges in the rabbeted moulding at top and bottom, the bottom being put up first, the cove then set in and temporarily supported till cove on one side of room is in place, then the top moulding nailed in place. This wood moulding can be furnished at a reasonable price. If no particular profile is wanted, we will furnish it in basswood with profile as shown in cut, at a price of 2 cents net, per lineal foot of moulding. 6 MAXWELL, LORBES & STILLMAN CO. ] WHiij* ORNAMENTAL PLASTERING In Milwaukee Electric Ry. & Light Co.’s Terminal Station, Milwaukee, Wis.
