To those, however, who con- tinue to favor carpets, we beg to submit the following: Carpets are excellent incubators for all kinds of germs. Carpet -cleaning means labor of the stren- uous sort, and is usual- ly done not oftener than twice a year; car- pets, after they have been laid a few weeks, contain quantities of germ-filled dust, some portion of which is set in motion whenever sweeping is done. Dust irritates the mucous membrane of the nose and throat, thus providing an avenue for the entrance of disease- producing germs into the system. Rugs can be easily cleaned in the yard at frequent intervals, — at every sweep- ing, if thought necessary. Carpets wear unevenly, and often have to be replaced when they are only partly worn out. Rugs can be easily changed about so that the wear is dis- 4 Care of Floors * tributed, and thus they are made to last much longer than carpets. Moving is a simple matter when one has only to place the rugs in the new rooms instead of fitting old or new carpets. By cutting old carpet into suitable pieces, sewing these together, binding the raw edges and brushing the back with sizing to give proper stiffness, good rugs can be produced. Rug factories are very common now, and the most ragged old carpet can be sent to one of these factories to be converted into good rugs at a small expense. The kinds of new rugs that may be bought are many, and these embrace Japanese, Jute, Kensington Art Squares, Smyrna, Brussells, Wilton, Velvet, India, Persian and Turkish. Some of these are very cheap, and at the same time are very pretty. All are durable. The Oriental rugs will last a lifetime. From the list given one can select rugs at any price to suit his purse. A home is much more artistic and elegant with finished wood floors, and with rugs, than with the old-fashioned floors covered with carpets, it matters Care of Floors 5 not how expensive the latter may be. Formerly it was impossible to use a rug satisfactorily on an old floor, since there was no way of finishing the floor so as to give it an attrac- tive appearance around the rug. The invention of Rogers Stainfloor Fin- ish, however, has made it possible to use a rug on any floor, and at the same time give the floor a more attractive apperance than it had when covered with carpet. Not Simply a Floor Finish Rogers Stainfloor Finish is not simply a Floor Finish — the best made; it is also the best general finish for Furniture and all Interior Woodwork. 6 Care of Floors Rules for Finishing Floors Rule I. — Applying to New Oak. Fold a piece of the sand- paper around a block of wood one inch thick and of proper size to hold in your hand. Use it as you would a scrubbing brush. Be sure the surface to be treated is free from dust and thoroughly dry. j* If a floor is so dirty and greasy that it must be scrubbed before applying Stain- floor, be sure to rinse it thoroughly, and let it dry 24 hours, as alkali from soap and moisture will injure any finish spread over them. Be sure to allow sufficient time be- tween coats for drying, as no finish will be durable if the successive coats of it are not thoroughly dried. When building, do not finish floors until plumbers and decorators have done their work. > * Old or imperfect floors that have large cracks or knot-holes in them, should first be treated with an applica- tion of Rogers Floor-Crack Filler. Care of Floors 9 Transparent Stainfloor Finish will not change the natural color of the wood Dark Oak orWalnut Stainfloor Finish will hide all discolorations in an old floor. * Stainfloor Undercoat, if applied to an old unfinished floor and lightly sand- papered when dry, shows the original grain of the wood, but does not allow stains or knots to show. The applica- tion of Stainfloor Finish brings out and enhances the natural grain effect, and produces a beautiful floor. % & Old floors and close- grained woods do not re- quire a Filler. Old floors painted in dark colors should have a coat of StainfloorUndercoat before the finish is applied. # Stainfloor Undercoat, while it covers fairly well in one coat, may be a little cloudy or streaked, but this does not show through the subsequent coats of Stainfloor Finish. Old pine or other soft wood absorbs so much finish that Light Oak Stainfloor Finish will produce Dark Oak color.
