AVTRY library Columbia university a*uici At \ THK STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. 1 We have removed to the spacious building, Nos. 194 to 200 Greene Street, corner of Bay, which is now completely fitted up with new machinery, embodying all the latest improvements, and are prepared to execute any orders with which we may be favored. We beg leave to call your attention to our Machine Turned Balusters. We are the owners of the U. S. Patents for the only Baluster Machine making a shaving cut, with the same tool used by the hand turner, but controlled by an Iron Hand, which cannot vary from the pattern set. , The Balusters are finished equal to those turned by hand, but are superior in being uniform in Shape and Size, obviating loss of time to the stair builder in fitting the necks in the rail. We furnish our Balusters with Tait’s Patent Dovetail, when so ordered, and plane square bases true with turning, at list prices. Our machines are now fitted to turn the regular styles of 2, 2J4, and 2% inches diameter, and new styles will be constantly produced. Our regular stock Balusters are turned 2 feet 8 inches and 2 feet 4 inches long, called “ Long” and “ Short,” of Black Walnut, Cherry, Ash, and Black Birch. Balusters will be turneu of other woods, but will cost proportionally higher — on account of waste in cutting from plank. Odd lengths to order at a small additional cost. We are also prepared to execute any description of jdiand turned work. The' Standard Wood Turning Co. LEONARD J. GORDON, President. JAS. DAVIES, Superintendent. WM. J. TAIT, Treasurer. Fig. 1.. Fig. 2. Fig. 3. Fig. 4. We will also dovetail any pattern of hand turned balusters, at an additional charge of 50 cents per hundred. The advantages of this mode of dovetailing are : 1st. The dovetails, being' cut by special machinery, ax - e uniform in size and angle, insuring a perfect fit. 2d. As the baluster can be placed in the step in any desirable position, minor defects can be disposed of to advantage. 3d. The base is not disfigured by accidental saw cuts. 4th. No danger of splitting the step, if tlie mortise is reasonably correct, as the curved portion of the baluster, being the point of least resistance, is flattened when forced in the mortise. DIRECTIONS.— Cut the mortises in the steps for 04 , 1%, and 2 inch balusters, % inch square at the top and bevelled as shown in the accompanying templet; chip on a piece of the cone in order to make a flat bearing at the back ; glue and drive in as in Fig. 3 ; cut off tlie projecting portion of the cone flush with the end of the step, Fig. 2. For 2)4 and 2)4 inch balusters, retain the same bevel, but cut the mortise 1% inch square at the top, and proportionally large at the bottom. For those possessing a lioring Machine or a Variety Moulder, Fig. 4 is the quickest mode, as the step can be bored from the under side with a bit ground to the proper angle, or a tapered cutter placed in the top of the spindle of a Variety Moulder, and the step ran up to a stop on the table. 6 THE STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. SPIRAL WORK. We have perfected a machine by which we can spiral, flute or mould Balusters, Newels or columns of a length not to exceed 12 feet, up to 10 inches diameter, and either straight, tapered or of irregular shape. This work, as executed by us, differs from that of other makers, due to the fact that our machine is so constructed that the knife is always cutting favorable to the grain of the wood operated upon ; therefore our work is smoothly cut, and is at once ready for polishing. This work can be [done on any pattern of turning desired. When cost is an object, the members should be so arranged that the Spiral shall terminate in a hollow, as in these cuts ; the machine can then run out and finish. If it abuts against a member, hand work would be necessary to complete, adding materially to the cost. 8 THE STANDARD 'WOOD TURNING COMPANY. These Newels, not being thoroughly seasoned, sometimes check. We do not guarantee them. If specially ordered, they will be glued up of seasoned plank, at a slightly increased cost. THE STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. 11 ANGLE NEWELS. We frequently have our customers order regular lengths of starting newels, which they intend to use for angle posts. This will only lead to disappointment, as they are unsuitable, for the reason that in most cases the angle, newel must receive more than one rail, at different heights, necessitating either longer squares, or, when more than one riser enters the base, two squares, separated by turning, and they are gene- rally much longer. The positions of these squares change with every variation of pitch of stairway. On the other side we show a plan of stairway, with suitable Angle Newels for the same in elevation. It will be observed that no two of these are alike, one of them requiring to be over six feet long. They should be’laid out by an experienced stair builder, and a rough sketch [sent*us with the necessary [lengths between the points marked, thus : They 4 [can be turned any pattern that may be selected, the cost depending upon the amount of turning, their length, and kind of wood. We will lay them out if desired. FOR THIS WE REQUIRE: 1. Plan of stairway, showing the face line of string board and the positions of'risers and newels. 2. Rise and tread of steps as sawed out on the string board. 3. Width of string board. 4. Thickness of floor, including plaster. 5. Thickness of rail to be used. 6. Size of newel, kind of wood, [whether we are to clean up the squares and furnish rosettes. We must have either the rough sketch with dimensions or all these particulars, as without either it will be impossible for us to execute orders. Plan of Stairway. See the other side of this page. THE STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. 13 PEDESTAL NEWELS. Observing the great reduction of late years in the price of Ready Made Furniture, owing to the division of labor and thorough system pursued, we have adopted the same plan in the manufacture of Pedestal Newels; therefore variations, either over or under the sizes named, necessitating the manufacture of single Newels, will add to the cost. Having all the latest Improved Woodworking Machinery, we are enabled to produce our Regular Styles at much lower rates, and of supe- rior finish to any made heretofore. Our standard Newels are 3 ft. 7 in. from floor line to centre of rail, but we add'2 in. extra to base, for adjustment. NEWELS AND MANTELS MADE FROM .‘ARCHITECT’S DESIGNS. We use only thoroughly seasoned materials. The plain parts are filled with Wheeler's Patent Filler, and Oiled. Where panels are shown, they are Veneered with French Burl, and Polished. Any of our Pedestal Newels may be used for gas jet, as in No. 12, by removing top ornament. Turned Newels are also filled with Wheeler’s Patent Filler, and Oiled. We are prepared to furnish Stair Rails of any pattern, size or material, worked out and bolted to turns, ready to place on the stairs. By the aid of improved machinery we can execute this work much cheaper than by hand labor. When price is an object, it is to the advantage of the buyer to adopt our regular pat- terns of rail, as illustrated in our catalogue (pages 28 and 29), as expensive cutters are necessary for special patterns, adding materially to the cost, when small quanties of rail are required. — . In our Price List will be found, under the heading of “ Stair Rails Ready t<-> Hang.” the prices of straight rail of the various patterns, sizes and materials, cleaned up, cut to the proper lengths and jointed t6 turns: and on the following page, the prices Of “Ash, Black Walnut or Cherry, Right and Left Hand Turns.” From these two tables, taken conjointly, the price may at once be obtained at which we will furnish any ordinary stair rail complete and delivered on railroad here. These tables are of great value to carpenters in making out their estimates for this class of work. To get out the Rail for Straight Flights we need: 1. The number and height of risers as sawed out on string board. 2. The width of tread as sawed out on string board. 3. Diameter of cylinder from face of string board to fascia, and which way it turns on landing. 4. Length of level rail measured from spring line of cylinder to spring line of quarter turn. 5. Length of return measured from spring line of quarter turn to wall. 6. If turnout Easement, the amount of set off, measured from a continuation of the face of string to centre of newel. 7. On what tread and the position on the tread the turnout commences. U nless we receive a plan showing otherwise, we always suppose the top riser for a straight flight of stairs to be placed at the spring- of cylinder.
