TERMS AND CONDITIONS PRICES List prices only are given herein, and unless otherwise specified are F. O. B. St. Paul. Net prices and discounts furnished upon application. All quotations are for prompt acceptance only, and are subject to change without notice. All orders sent us without previous quotations will be invoiced at our regular net prices, which will be as low as if quoted before receiving the order. SHIPMENTS All contracts made subject to strikes, accidents and other contingencies unavoid¬ able or beyond our control. State whether shipment is to go by freight or express, and via what railway or steamboat line. We make every effort to prevent delays on shipments in transit. Goods are always carefully packed, checked and marked, but our responsibility for the safe delivery of a shipment ceases when the transportation company receipts for the shipment in good order. Questions relating to delays or damages in transit should be taken up with the carrier. TERMS Sixty days net, with approved credit, or 2 per cent off if paid within 10 days from date of invoice. Those desiring credit must have good commercial rating, or furnish references from whom satisfactory information can be obtained, before shipment will be made. No extension will be allowed nor more than 60 days’ credit given, except by special agreement to parties financially responsible, on note bearing 7 per cent interest. Otherwise, we shall expect instructions to ship goods to our order and send bill of lading attached to sight draft through bank for the amount of invoice, less 2 per cent cash discount. CLAIMS All claims for errors against invoices or shortages must be made on receipt of goods. Make no corrections on invoices. If any claim for error or overcharge, ask for a credit memorandum. REMITTANCES All accounts are subject to sight draft after maturity. Remit by New York, Chicago or St. Paul Exchange, its equivalent, or express or post-office money-order, and not by personal check (unless exchange is added). RETURNS Materials which have been shipped according to order or through error must not be returned without our consent, and when returned for any reason, notify us promptly by letter, and attach bill of lading which you obtain from your local agent. SEE INDEX ON LAST PAGES CORNICES TO AVOID MISTAKES READ THE FOLLOWING: IN ORDERING OR REQUESTING PRICES, always give wall-line measure¬ ments. State what finish is desired for the ends, whether a single return (Fig. i), a double return (Fig. 2) or head-blocks (Fig 3). State whether building is of frame, metal-covered, brick, or stone construction. If possible, send us a sketch of the wall, showing location of all offsets or angles, and giving correct measurements. Advise whether the cornice is to be walled in during the erection of the building, or if wanted for a building already erected. This information is essential as a different construction is necessary. All cornices are made to order, so ample time should be allowed for their manufacture. ALL PRICES ARE LIST, subject to discount, and apply to cornices in sections, all complete as illustrated, and ready for erection with the least possible labor. All brack¬ ets, dentils and ornaments are riveted and soldered to the cornice moulding. Mitres are always put together whenever practicable. If cornices with brackets are wanted knocked- down, with brackets separate, to be assembled at destination, state so plainly in your 1 order. Freight rates on knocked-down cornices are about one-third of the rates on assembled goods. No extra charge is made for crating. Cover and wood look-outs are not included at prices given. THESE CORNICES ARE SUBSTANTIALLY CONSTRUCTED of galvanized steel, are mechanically correct, and guaranteed to fit if the instructions given above are followed. The ornamentation is of stamped or spun zinc, soldered to the galvanized steel mouldings, producing a boldness of figure and sharp, clean-cut lines, equal, if not superior, to carved stone. Any of these cornices can be made of copper with stamped or spun copper ornaments, if desired. Prices quoted upon application. Do not confuse these cornices with embossed cornices, the ornamentation of which is lightly stamped on the galvanized steel itself. To meet competition, we show a few designs of this grade ! on page 6. WE CAN MAKE SPECIAL CORNICES of any size or style from architects’ details or your sketches. Send us plans for estimates. STYLES OF END FINISH SINGLE RETURN DOUBLE RETURN Fig. 1 Fig. 2 HEAD BLOCK In placing orders or requesting estimates it is important to state plainly what style of end finish is wanted. Head Blocks are always made 13 inches wide unless ordered otherwise. T.fAUL R00PIK1© e©KHie IM1HT COMPANY CORNICES-Continued ERECTION Circumstances largely govern methods of erection. We illustrate in Figs. 4 and 5 two ways commonly employed. Wrought iron stiffening braces are always advisable in large cornices. Being strong and rigid, they in¬ sure work that will be permanently straight and true. They can be sup¬ plied with any cornice at a slight ad¬ ditional charge. Wood look-outs shown should be spaced 24 inches on centers, and should be boarded tight along the top, to properly support the cornice cover. Fig. 4. Wood Lookouts. Fig. 5. Band Iron Braces. SKYLIGHTS \o< We Specialize in Skylights for Factories, Warehouses, Public Buildings, Etc. This detail illustrates the construction of our skylights. The parts, which are cut and formed on steel dies to insure accuracy, can be shipped from stock in bundles, at a considerable saving in freight, and at special prices. Unless otherwise ordered, sky¬ lights will be assembled in the largest convenient sections, with glass cut to size and boxed separately. Our skylights are made one-third pitch, which provides prop¬ er drainage for condensation, which will not drip from the glass. If properly put up and glazed, our skylights will be abso¬ lutely waterproof. Wood curbs, which we do not furnish, should be built one- half inch smaller each way than the size of skylight, to allow for an easy fit, and for flashing. Style 24B. ADVANTAGES Saves weight and reduces expense. Produces handsome architectural effects. Presents the hard, smooth surface characteristic of stone or marble. Not subject to the unsightly weather-cracks found in wood columns, and can¬ not be so easily marred. Free from defects of knotty, sappy, imperfect lumber. Low cost. Practically indestructible and everlasting. HOW USED Where a slight weight only is to be supported, Columns may be used without reinforcement. Usually the sheet metal column is used to enclose the actual support, which may be of iron or wood. In such cases, the shaft is shipped in two halves. If desired, we will make column complete, with inside upright wood sup¬ port of necessary size, bolted to wood cap and base, all ready for erection. STYLES AND SIZES Any diameter or length, square, round or octagon, furnished, with plain or classic capitals, fluted or paneled shaft. In Ordering or Asking Estimates Give number of columns wanted, exact length and diameter of column, and style of capital. State kind of supports to be enclosed, and whether we are to figure on same. Also whether priming coat of red lead is to be applied before shipment. Entrance to Bank Building showing our Sheet Metal Columns in con¬ nection with our rock-faced metal siding. Style “A” Fluted galvanized steel shaft, with plain spun cap and base. SPECIAL —Great strength may be obtained by filling our sheet metal Columns with cement. When Columns are made of copper in such cases, the appearance and durability, as well as the supporting qualities, is fully equal to cast bronze. Our Columns are all cold pressed which produces a very rigid, durable shaft. There are no joints in these Columns to open up, as is often the case with wood. When corrugated steel is figured, add 10% to cover lappage. Figure to use ridge finish to match roofing along ridge A-B, and always use, in connection with corrugated roofing, corrugated angle ridge cap along break C-D. Corrugated ridge finish and corrugated angle ridge cap are illus¬ trated on page 30. Siding—Figure each side by multiplying length I-J by height G-H; figure each end by multiplying width H-I by height G-H and add for surface of each gable, which is obtained by multiplying three-fourths of the width G-L by the height M-N; then add results. When figuring brick or stone patterns, add 5% for lappage. For corrugated steel, add 10% for lappage. Make no deductions for openings of less than 50 square feet each. Roofing and siding may be used on studding without sheathing. An excellent and cheap construction for barns, warehouses and similar buildings. When used in this way wood strips should be nailed across studding and joists spaced twelve or eighteen inches on centers according to length of sheets to be used. These strips will support the center of the sheets which would otherwise sag in the middle and will permit closer nailing. The result will be a tighter job at but the slight extra cost of the wood strips. We will solve your various problems of this kind if you send in plans and specifications. 29 T. These cuts show how our rock-faced plates are formed and fastened. Even under extreme expansion or contraction there is no strain upon the nails, making it impossible for these plates to get loose and rattle, as is the case with lap-joint plates or siding. In 1894 Cashier E. E. Secor said: “Your work on our new Buffalo Center State Bank building is highly satisfactory. Your patent slip-joint siding plates fool the best of them, since we have had them painted and sanded. We can assure you we have the most substantial looking building, as well as in construction, and the warmest one in Buffalo Center. Were we going to build again, we would certainly use your rock-faced slip- joint metal siding plates.” In 1907 Mr. Secor said: “It looks as good today as it did the day it was put up. The building is still a credit to the town and, if any¬ thing, looks better and more substan¬ tial than the brick buildings which have been erected since.” Bank, Buffalo Center, Iowa This building is as substantial now as it was when erected years ago. \ The Appearance of Success Begets * I Success: Put Up a Good “Front” \ land LOOK PROSPEROUS \ • *^ ^^ ^ ^^«t ii 11 Mr. C. My insurance is rated be¬ tween solid brick and brick veneer.” In 1906 Mr. Andrews wrote: “I thank you for the blue print and have left it with Mr. - of your city who will take the mat¬ ter up direct with you. PAUL” METAL SHINGLES How to Place in Position In placing “St. Paul” shingles on a roof, begin at the left hand corner, at the eaves, being careful to get your first course of shingles parallel with the eaves. Do this by nailing on a cleat to butt your shingles against. Put on six or more shingles, loosely nailed, to make sure that you are starting right. Then nail on a strip of gable end finish, beginning at the eaves and complete nailing your finish as you go towards the peak or ridge. (See cut.) Before you nail on all the shingles put on your ridge roll or hip cap (see cut), and fit your shingles into it, putting the shingles up into the fold of the cap, not under it. Do not nail through the cap and shingle Study following cut carefully; it shows plainly what you have to do to make an excellent job. Working Around Chimneys, Windows, Etc. In working round valleys, fold the tin under instead of cutting it off. Around chimneys, windows or other projections on roof, work just as you would with wood, shingle or slate, only instead of cutting it off bend the metal up against the chimney, window, etc., using flashing, as shown on page 46. “St. Paul” Metal Shingles are superior to all other roof coverings because of being stronger, never wrinkling or cracking. They are more ornamental, and all things considered, are the most economical roof covering made. 58 “ST. PAUL” METAL SHINGLES AND TILE Made of Galvanized Steel or Painted Tin No soldering or special tools required The distinguishing features of the “St. Paul” shingle are the simple, practical side lock; the sharp, bold embossing, and the weather-proof end lap. There is no better shingle on the market. Any ordinary workman can apply our shingles almost as fast as he can handle them. In our side lock, ample provision has been made against “capillary attraction,” by avoiding the perfect nesting of the interlocking flanges. In shingles where this close contact exists, leaks are caused by water being drawn up between the surfaces of the metal. Our side-lock is in close contact at but one point, and there is no chance for trouble of this kind. No. 1 “St. Paul” Shingle Covering size, 8x12 inches. The smaller sized shingles are best adapted for small roof surfaces and hip roofs, where considerable cutting is required at hips, val¬ leys, dormers, etc., as they can be cut to less waste than larger shingles. The larger shingles are best for large, un¬ broken surfaces where little cutting is required, as they are more quickly laid, and have a smaller proportion of joints per square. We make all ridge rolls, hip-caps, crestings, valleys, eaves, courses, etc., necessary to make a neat and complete roof. You Pay for Steel Ceilings Only Once. Suitable for j Stores, j Churches , Theatres, j Lodge Rooms j and Public j Buildings. Our Kind of Steel Ceilings are handsome, inexpensive and proof against fire, damp¬ ness, vermin and decay. A clean and sanitary finish that does not absorb dirt, and affords no lodging place for germs. They save the expense of papering, patching and calcimining; the cost of lath and plaster in new buildings; expense of renewals, and damage caused by falling plaster. They save buildings from total destruction by confining fire to the room in which it starts, and in many instances protect entire communities. Their first cost is their last cost; you are never through paying for other kinds of ceilings. Our plates are heavily primed with one good coat of specially prepared paint, ground in boiled linseed oil. This will not peel, scale or soften, and gives assurance that the finish¬ ing coats will not crack or blister. Our plates are made of the best No. 29 gauge black Bessemer steel obtainable, stamped on steel dies and carefully re-squared. The beads are perfectly formed and worked into the patterns in such a manner as to present the appearance of one unbroken sheet on the ceiling. For Prices on Steel Ceilings and Side-Walls the best way is to send us a diagram or plan of the room to be finished, and give the numbers of designs on which quotations are desired. Draw an outline of the ceiling and mark thereon the correct interior width and length. Show also the size, shape and posi¬ tion of all off-sets, openings and irregularities. Show size and position of beams, if any, and state whether they are to be covered. State how far cornice is to drop on the wall and whether height of doors and win¬ dows will permit same to continue around the room. Follow this same method when side-walls are wanted, and make separate diagrams for each one of the walls. If an architect’s plan is available, send it along, specifying designs wanted. To Obtain Costs Without Writing Us, follow this method: Add to the width and to the length of the ceiling the distance cornice drops on each wall, in no case adding less than one foot. Multiply these results. For example, if the ceiling is 18 feet wide and 39 feet long and cornice is wanted all around, 12 inches or less in depth, the process would be as follows: Width 18 feet, plus 2 feet, equals 20 feet. Length 39 feet, plus 2 feet equals 41 feet. Then, 20x41 feet equals 820 square feet, or 8.20 squares, which is the amount of material needed. Apply list price and discount. If cornice is more than 12 inches deep, add exact drop. Make no deductions for openings of less than 50 square feet. Be sure to apply the correct list. Additional Information. Steel Ceilings and Side-walls weigh, crated for shipment, about 70 pounds to the square, and take a fourth class rate under the Western Classification. All our plates, with the exception of sunk panels may be applied to boarded surfaces without furring strips. In applying over plas¬ ter or on open joists, furring strips must be used in all cases. There is nothing like it on the j market. It will not crack or peel, will not fade, and may be washed as often j as necessary. It has that soft, decorative effect so desirable on ceilings or j walls. Cannot be mixed by hand. j When the great covering capacity and lasting qualities of “Perfecto” Steel Ceiling Paint are considered, it will be found that it is by far the most ECONOMICAL paint for the purpose. Ask for color card. j As to a color scheme, so much depends on the furnishings of the room, size, char¬ acter, etc., that no specific plan can be laid down. Where it is desired, we will furnish a color scheme that might be adopted, but tastes are so diversified in these matters that we prefer to leave the solution with the purchaser. “PERFECTO” Steel Ceiling Paint is carried in the following shades, but any shade can be mixed to order. FAUL K©©riHG C,0KHI£ AM© There is nothing that adds so much to the appearance of cornices and other architectural sheet metal work as our zinc ornamentation illustrated on the following pages. It rivals terra cotta in beauty of detail and at but a fraction of the cost. T ry to imagine how plain, how unattractive the buildings illustrated below would be without the ornamentation used. All ornamentation and balustrades shown on this building were made out of zinc in our factory. Notice how the appearance is improved by this work. All ornaments as well as the cornice itself were manufactured in our plant. The building is twelve stories high, but the ornamental details are clearly visible from the street. 113 3 No. 223. 1% inch. List, per foot. .$0.09 Lwl'. No. 282. \y 2 inch. Weight about 40 pounds per 1,000. 22 Gauge 24 Gauge Per box of 1,000. $7.00 $6.00 Take particular notice of the straight edges, which greatly increase the tensile strength and pre¬ vent corrugations from flattening or pulling out under strain. Note, too, the large binding sur¬ face, which grips the mortar firmly on both sides. “St. Paul” Brick Bonds save labor because there is no clipping of brick for concealed headers. When substituted for end headers, they save material, be¬ cause a smaller number of face brick is required. In both cases they save the bricklayer’s time. The usual requirements are at least one wall tie on each brick in the binding courses, and binding courses to be not less than one in each six courses, thus making 1,000 ties for each 6,000 face bricks. 136 FAIJL KQQTlMi eQKfaieC tss 0IHA1M1M1T ©©MPAfUY EXPANDED METAL PLASTERING LATH Made of Black, Painted or Galvanized Steel This 1S th f original small mesh metal lath, with a mesh one-half inch wide and with a considerable dip of a broad strand to retain the mortar. Nothing is known today that protects steel so thoroughly as cement, and the form of strand and the form and size of mesh of Kno-Burn Expanded Metal Plastering Lath combine to make the protection ideal. Owing to the form and size of the mesh, it is not necessary to have the lath for interior work painted or galvanized, except when the materials used in the mortar contain impurities that attack the steel. When in doubt as to whether these impurities exist or where moisture may come in contact with the lath, it is best to call for a painted or galvanized lath. Kno-Burn Expanded Metal Lath requires less mortar per square yard than any other, and none drops behind. There are other laths on the market with larger mesh and with many different kinds of mesh, but the lath best known and most favorably known is the Kno-Burn Diamond Mesh Lath with the small mesh and broad inward dipped strand. PAUL” TUBE-TOP TANKS Note how the Tube-top is centered over side sheets adding strength and neatness Cross Sectiom 0f Tnrr Mew 'St Paul Roll Top Tank Note how bottom seam is indented eliminating rough projecting edges “St. Paul” Tube-top Tanks are made of No. 20 gauge galvanized steel, accurately cut and shaped, and assembled by skilled mechanics. Each tank is thoroughly inspected during construction and before shipment, to insure correctness of detail and perfect workmanship. Therefore, we do not hesitate to guarantee workmanship and material employed in their construction, and we will replace any of our tanks found lacking therein. An original and unique feature of the “Saint Paul” Tank is the top reinforcement. It is a tube rolled on the top edge of the sides and ends, and not a separate piece tacked or riveted on. It eliminates the unsightly angle-iron commonly used and provides a neat, rigid and permanent reinforcement that will not loosen or rust. It is sanitary because the smooth, rounded edges afford no lodging place for germs or dirt. Another original feature is the bottom seam. It is formed on the side and bottom sheets, as illus¬ trated, and the four thicknesses of heavy galvanized steel, securely locked and soldered, make a seam that is permanently tight. This four-ply construction requires no angle iron braces or rivets. The sides of all oblong stock tanks listed are stiffened by vertical corrugations every six inches. They prevent bulging under pressure, and are better than the single angle iron brace commonly fur¬ nished. Height measurements given for Tube-top Tanks are not exact, the difference being taken up in the rolled edge and double seam. Capacities are correct. To Tinners and Sheet Metal Workers “Saint Paul” Tanks can be shipped knocked down at lower prices and freight rates than set-up tanks. The bottom and vertical seams simply require locking and soldering. If tanks are ordered set up, two or more nesting sizes should be specified to save freight. See freight classification below. ISO Sectional View Illustrating Construction. ‘PRUDEN SYSTEM’’ PORTABLE OR PERMANENT FIRE-PROOF BUILDINGS BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT with the METAL SHELTER CO., of St. Paul, for whom we manufacture the famous “PRUDEN SYSTEM” of Portable, Fireproof Buildings, we now offer our friends among the trade a complete line of these buildings at prices that should make them easily salable anywhere, and exceptionally profitable to handle. In doing so, we place in your hands the very best metal building on the market, the result of considerable experiment and of carefully worked out details. An imitated article is always a successful one, and these buildings have many imitators, but the “PRUDEN SYS¬ TEM” buildings are fully covered by patents, patents that protect you as the dealer as well as the patentees and manufacturers. So far as we know, we still have the only all-steel, self¬ structuring, portable building on the market. READ HOW THEY ARE MADE CONSTRUCTION. “PRUDEN SYSTEM” buildings are made in interlocking sections, of heavy galvanized steel. The wall sheets imitate various designs of dressed stone, and the roof sheets represent fluted tile. Each wall section, 24 inches wide, contains as a part of itself, a vertical metal studding or rib, of ample strength and rigidity, in addition to which the interlocking bead or roll on the edge of each sheet provides additional reinforcement. The roof sheets interlock in the same manner and are supported by sectional steel trusses of elaborate strength but easy to handle and simple to erect. These exclusive features provide rigid vertical supports every 12 inches in the wall, without using any framing whatever, but the principal reinforcement consists of Y inch iron rods, running from beneath the angle iron sill up through the center of the interlocking beads and connecting with the roof truss and its corresponding tie- rods at the eaves. These rods, continuing from the sill on one side of the building, up through the eave support, roof truss, ridge finish, and down the other side, when drawn tight with the nuts at the sill, bind the whole structure into a perfectly rigid, permanent building, yet, by merely removing the nuts, the building is easy to take down and move. The door and window sections interlock in the same manner and can be located wherever desired without additional labor or expense. The whole structure, even to the threads on the bolts, is heavily galvanized, leaving absolutely nothing that can rust, rot, warp, or burn. Every section is completely formed, fitted and ready to put in place before shipping, and plain, simple instructions for erecting accompany each building. We furnish no floors except at extra prices, as mate¬ rials for floors can usually be purchased at destination to better advantage. Materials and workmanship are fully guaranteed. LINING. For garages, summer cottages, etc., lining is seldom needed, as the buildings are absolutely windproof and impervious to moisture, but ample provision has been made for lining the buildings, if desired. By inserting strips along the strengthening ribs, compo-board, plaster board, lath and plaster, or steel ceilings and sidewalls can easily be applied, making these buildings as warm as any building can be made. The most satisfactory method, however, and one which preserves the portable feature, is to line the walls with a flax insulating felt, in sections, which serves as a non-conductor of heat or cold. Then, for the inner lining, compo-board or steel ceilings are preferable and most economical, and the portable, fire¬ proof features are retained. PRICES. Until you are familiar with the unlimited variety of buildings the “PRUDEN SYSTEM” of interchangeable sections offers, you will find it better to write for net prices and information when you have a prospect in sight, but for your convenience in figuring approximate prices, we give on the follow¬ ing pages prices on the most commonly used sizes and designs. Frequently, by rearranging sections and eliminating something not needed, lower prices are obtained. Also, sections can be added from time to time at small expense. All prices given are F. O. B. St. Paul, Minn. APPROXIMATE WEIGHTS. For estimating freight, apply Third Class Rate, to weights derived as follows: Buildings 10 feet wide weigh, approximately, 120 lbs. per foot of length. Buildings 12 feet wide weigh, approximately, 130 lbs. per foot of length. Buildings 14 feet wide weigh, approximately, 140 lbs. per foot of length. Larger sizes in proportion. Interior of Store Building Shown Above Showing the neat, clean and at¬ tractive appearance of compo-board lining as applied to the interior of ■“Pruden System” buildings. We recommend our steel ceilings and •sidewalls for this purpose, and by using them the result is an inde¬ structible interior finish, exception¬ ally decorative and proof against moisture, germs, vermin, and fire. To keep out the cold, a layer of flax insulating felt is used, and is applied next to the outer steel wall, leaving a dead air space of •one inch between it and the inner lining. This has been proven suffi¬ ciently warm for winter use in the coldest weather, and has the added advantage of being cool in sum¬ mer, as the bulk of material used is so small that it does not retain the heat of the sun, as is the case in wood, brick, or stone buildings. This picture shows the interior of a small confectionery store and lunch room in a residence district in Pittsburg. This is only one of hundreds of purposes for which the “Pruden System” is adapted, and they are now in use all over the country as stores, shops, offices, restaurants, picture theaters, waiting stations, and for numerous other purposes.
