Lamson Gravity Conveyors carry these electric-light bulbs in trays of fifty each from the etching machines to the washing tank in the Westinghouse Lamp Works, New York T is easy to supervise an organization of a hundred men in an office or manufacturing department who are doing certain specified tasks, but have you tried to control five porters who are all over the plant and doing different work every hour? Then you know how hard it is to get maximum production from every department if you rely on these porters to carry the materials and parts where they should go. Does This Ever Happen in Your Plant? The forwarders mean well, but they can’t be everywhere at once. While they are out in the yard unloading a car of raw stock, a dozen highly paid workmen run out of materials in the shop. And this is one of the big reasons for the difficulty of getting out the work on time in the warehouse, freight shed, on the construction job; in fact, wherever materials and products are moved. A pull on the handle of the switch shown in the picture diverts packages to either line building materials, and wherever products are moved. Stock in process is kept down to a minimum, as it is always on the move from receiving room to shipping platform. There is no accumulation of partly finished material between machines and in the aisles. Production from a given floor area is increased often over fifty per cent. More machines can be installed on floors that are kept clean of stock and moving trucks, while the machinery is run to capacity all day long when conveyors keep the workmen supplied with materials. All wearing parts are case-hardened and are made extra big and strong to stand the hardest kind of use. It oper¬ ates for practically nothing as it uses the free power of gravity, which is on the job twenty-fours hours a day — 365 days in the year. Its construction is simple — it consists of a series of lively rollers carried in a sturdy angle iron frame. When the conveyor is set at a slight inclination, packages or products placed upon its rollers move along of their own free will, without any care or attention whatsoever. What It Will Carry Boxes, barrels, rolls of paper, castings, brick and tile, lumber, and all products having at least one flat surface are carried directly on the conveyor. Small parts are carried in tote boxes, while bags of cement and grain, rolls of cloth and products of irregular shape, are carried in simple trays or containers, or on pallets. “Shipments for Points South Take the Right-Hand Chute” How to separate the thousands of packages for ready shipment to various states was a problem with Sears Roebuck & Company in their Seattle Warehouse. Where economy of space is important, the conveyor is hung from the ceiling, out of the way of workmen and machinery. Steel hangers and diagonal brace rods hold it rigidly in place. Portable Sections Our portable gravity conveyors, mounted on swivel wheels, are used for temporary work, such as loading and unloading cars and piling cases in storage. Hinged sections, which swing out of the way like a draw¬ bridge when not in use, are installed across spaces which must be kept open. Curves and Switches Curves and switches make our conveyors as flexible as a railroad track. They run between machines, through partitions, around columns and obstructions — they carry products wherever wanted. The boxes of empty milk bottles starting down this chute pass along the gravity spiral, shown in the large picture, and are conveyed by gravity direct to the washing machines Lowering Devices For lowering packages, we build all necessary types of chutes and lowering devices. A straight chute is the simplest device, and is practi¬ cal where the distance is short. Spiral Chutes To economize space, chutes between floors are built in the form of a spiral, either open or closed. In design, they are like a spiral staircase, the stairs being replaced by the metal chute down which the packages slide. Products are placed on the spiral blade at any desired floor. A spiral chute with a number of blades gives the same service as a number of separate chutes, without a corresponding increase in cost or space occupied. Spiral Conveyors The gravity conveyor is curved into a spiral to provide a continuous system for lowering packages. The great advantage of the gravity spiral [ 13 ] A Stream that Flows Uphill Boxes, as fast as they are unloaded from the wagon, are carried by conveyor and automatic elevator to the second floor. The action of this elevator is entirely automatic — it picks up and delivers packages without any care or attention [ 14 ] CONVEYING BY GRAVITY This Vertical Elevator Needs No Attendant Packages placed on the loading platform of this elevator are automatically delivered at any predetermined floor. It makes no difference how packages are placed on the conveyor, they are stored on the spiral and are instantly available as wanted at the delivery point. Boosters and Elevators The booster is a simple elevating section used on a long line of conveyor for raising packages to a point where gravity can operate. The inclined elevator is built like the booster and is used for con¬ veying products between floors. Both the boosters and the inclined elevators are built into a conveyor system to receive and deliver packages automatically, without care or attention. They are used in all kinds of industrial plants and business ^ houses — in stores, warehouses, and factories. They are a neces¬ sity in the receiving and shipping departments. Incoming packages are placed on the conveyor in the car or truck and carried direct to the stockrooms or departments where wanted. Outgoing packages are con¬ veyed in the same quick and economical way. There is no time lost trucking the products to the platform elevator, and waiting while a car is brought to the right floor. Automatic scales weigh the packages as they pass along the con¬ veyor. Tare is mechanically computed —the operator reads the weights as fast as the packages pass over the scale section. In the retail store, packages in hampers are carried by Gravity and Lamson Inclined Elevators from the delivery bins to the street, where they are loaded on the delivery trucks. Weighing Without Waiting These packages are automatically weighed as they pass along the gravity conveyor. [ 22 ] CONVEYING BY GRAVITY “Gravity” Out of Doors Gravity conveyors make great savings in work out of doors where rough products are handled. On construction jobs, biick, hollow tile, bags of cement and sand on wooden pallets, rolls of roofing paper and other supplies are carried from the wagon, truck, or storage pile to where they are used. In the brickyard, bricks and tile are conveyed from the kilns to the cars or barges in which they are shipped. In the industrial plant, pig iron is conveyed from the cars to the storage yards, and boards, shooks, and bundles of stock to the lumber piles. A few lengths of portable con¬ veyor which are moved around the factory yard where wanted, simplify the hundred and one odd jobs of moving materials and products. On docks and in freight houses, our conveyors carry the barrels, boxes, crates, baskets, and other packages in and out of the freight cars and ships and convey them about the storage sheds. How the Department Store Speeds up Delivery of Parcels This gravity conveyor carries hampers from the trucks at the street level past the sorting slide in the delivery room where they are filled with parcels — then to the escalator which carries them to the street level for delivery. [ 23 ] CONVEYING BY GRAVITY A Short Line on Every Floor Incoming boxes in the New York warehouse of Endicott, Johnson & Company are brought to the various floors by this automatic elevator. A short length of Lamson Gravity Conveyor carries them to the sections where they are stored “ Gravity ” Used as a Marking Bench Boxes come to this basement stockroom by way of the right-hand conveyor. Here they are marked with numbers corresponding to the floors to which they should go and are pushed over to the left-hand conveyor which carries them to the automatic elevator [ 24 ] CONVEYING BY GRAVITY Conveyors in Ware¬ houses Speed in shipping orders is vitally important in the ware¬ house and wholesale establish¬ ment. Our conveyors carry all kinds of packages quickly and cheaply—barrels, cases of shoes, rolls of paper, crates of fruit, boxes of dry goods, hardware, groceries, drugs, etc. They cut out the delays that come when porters truck the packages about the building. For Materials in Bags With simple wooden pallets, bags of cement, grain, and other materials are carried by Lamson Gravity Conveyor Inclined or vertical elevators raise all incoming packages to the desired floors, where gravity conveyors carry them to where they are stored. Portable convey¬ ors, mounted on swivel wheels, are used by the stock boys to carry the packages to the bins or stock piles. The same conveyors carry outgoing packages to the spirals or chutes which terminate in the shipping room. This continuous conveying system keeps pack¬ ages steadily on the move. More stock can be accommodated in a given floor area, as the porters, with their cumbersome trucks, are not required. Shipments are made up immediately the order comes in. The conveyors can be moved about the foundry wherever they are wanted stock piles or bins are simply placed on the conveyor, which carries them direct to the waiting trucks or freight cars. Increasing Factory Production with Conveyors Lamson Gravity Conveyors increase factory production by keeping the workmen always supplied with plenty of material. Parts and products are conveyed between machines, departments, and buildings. Materials are not held up on the floors or at the elevators, but are carried direct to the next operation immediately they are finished. In the Foundry and Machine Shop Conveyors are valuable in machine works, especially in plants such as automobile factories, where large production of a uniform product is daily turned out. Flasks are carried from the storage yard to the moulding floor. Cores are carried in the same way from the core ovens to the foundry floors. Iron pigs are conveyed from the cars to the stock piles, and castings from the foun¬ dry to the snagging and pickling rooms. In the machine shop, castings and small parts in tote boxes are conveyed from ma¬ chine to machine. Maximum output is obtained continuously, as materials are auto¬ matically and surely delivered to each work¬ man, with no lost time between operations. Large iron castings are carried flat on the conveyor to and from the planers and milling machines In the Assembling Department Conveyors greatly speed up the work of the assembling departments in machine, electrical, and specialty manufacturing plants. They are automatic in loading, lifting, and unloading [ 30 ] No More Interruptions to Work Here This operator does not have to leave his filling and carbonating machine to carry cases of filled boxes to the trucks or storage. Conveyors systematize the work of the packing room in the canning plant and, in fact, wher¬ ever food products, candy, soap, or units of regular size and shape are boxed for shipment. A constant stream of boxes or cartons is conveyed past the employees who pack the goods, nail or seal the boxes, stencil and weigh them. The boxes ready for shipment are then conveyed to the cars, trucks, or storage. In the delivery department, they increase the efficiency of the motor trucks, as full packages are automatically brought to the truck drivers imme¬ diately the empties are discharged. For milk plants and dairies, we build a special sanitary con¬ veyor. The roller is equipped with hermetically sealed heads, which prevent any milk or other liquid from penetrating inside. In Shoe and Rubber Factories In shoe factories, raw leather is conveyed in the receiving and [ 32 ] CONVEYING BY GRAVITY cutting divisions, boxes of lasts from the manufactur¬ ing departments to the last storage, and cases of fin¬ ished shoes from storage to the shipping room. Rubbers, overshoes, auto¬ mobile tires, and rubber goods of all kinds are car¬ ried in suitable trays or containers in the rubber factory. In Wood-Working Shops In the wood-working shop, stock is conveyed between the saw, planer, and gluing bench, and in the manufacturing and finishing divisions. Fin¬ ished work is conveyed in perfect safety, and is not subject to bruising and scratch¬ ing through careless handling. In Textile Industries In textile mills, trays of full and empty bobbins, spindles, and spools are carried between the roving and spinning rooms and the weave sheds. In the cloth hall and shipping room, as well as in finishing companies and print works, rolls and bolts of cloth are conveyed on simple wooden pallets. Cloth and finished goods are carried in a similar way in clothing factories and knitting mills. Unites a Scattered Plant This gravity conveyor carries rolls of cloth over a bridge between two build¬ ings.
