AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY leanliness and advanced mental, as well as physical, development go hand in hand. The bath played an important part in the golden eras of Grecian and Roman suprem¬ acy. Likewise the lack of bathing played quite as important a role during the dreaded and much talked of Dark Ages. In ancient times when a king took a bath it actually be¬ came a rite. In those times kings were forced to allow their eager courtiers to play a part in all of their ceremo¬ nials. With so many persons performing a part of the work, this simple thing of taking a bath became a for¬ midable undertaking. The result was, kings did not take the time to bathe over-often and their subjects followed suit, so that the custom of bathing was not general. The Greeks, in their phenomenal mental growth as well as their far-famed physical beauty, were the first to make the custom of bathing a general one. Afterwards, the Romans followed suit and the Roman baths and what they represented came to be one of the wonders of the world. The historian Pliny declares that for 600 years bathing was the Romans only medicine. However, the Romans went to an extreme and the public baths became the lazy man’s paradise—an evil rather than the basis of a wonderful custom. The Roman became an idler, a dawdler—and was an easy victim for the conquerors ] From that time on—in other words, from the time of the Romans down through the Dark Ages until very recent years—there was a whole galaxy of bugaboos with regard to the custom of bathing. It was in 1841 that Adam Thompson of Cincinnati installed the first American bathtub. It was made of mahogany lined with lead and weighed a ton. He created quite a stir. Doctors pro¬ tested that frequent bathing was unhealthful. But as nothing adverse happened to Thompson, the custom spread rapidly and by i860 every first-class hotel in New York advertised from one to three public baths. Since that time there has been a rapid and consistent de¬ velopment in bathing fixtures. The tremendous increase in the popularity of bathing has created in America a billion-dollar plumbing industry and tremendous city water systems. Just as the porcelain enameled tub conquered the hand tub, so is the shower gaining in popularity over the tub. It is the “shock” principle against the “soak” idea of cleanliness. The shower cleanses the body with running water, always clean and fresh, while the tub method is to soak the dirt off the body. In addition the “shock” method imparts a tonic effect. Physical weariness is drop¬ ped off like a cloak and the body set vibrating with energy. It is truly the “royal bath,” for the user steps from the shower compartment feeling “every inch a king”. The Fiat shower is the truly “royal bath” built for the ever-ready use of His Majesty—the American Citizen. The Shower Hath The Clean Bath Soapy streaks do not show on the human body as they do on the dinner dishes, but neither can be thoroughly cleaned without rinsing. There is only one clean way to bathe,-—that is in a shower where you deal with fresh, clean water only. The Quick Bath The time it takes to fill the tub is often just enough to make a bath impossible. You could take a shower and be through in the same amount of time. There is only one quick way to bathe,— that is in a shower which is ready the instant the water tempera¬ ture is regulated to your liking. You’re out in a jiffy,—feeling fit again. The Invigorating Bath Which will you havel The sparkling sting of the needle shower? The cold dousing that wakes you up all over? The tingling patter of the gentle spray? Whatever your choice of these refreshing modes, it is offered only by the shower bath. The Comfortable Bath The shower bath eliminates the uncomfortable process of “getting used’’ to the hot water—one foot at a time. Starting with a mod¬ erate, comfortable warmth, the temperature can be increased gradually and at will. Especially for the Ladies The spray nozzle of the modern shower is not directly overhead. It comes out from the side wall and is adjustable. Thus the water is easily directed to strike the body at the shoulders to prevent wetting of the hair. If special precaution is wanted, a second spray at shoulder height can readily be provided. H E M O D E R N BATH FOREWORD rr^HE shower bath is extremely popular. Its rapid adoption as standard equipment in residences, apartments and hotels has been hindered only by ] the mechanical difficulty ma ^ n & a wa t er ~ti&ht compartment. Many fine and expen¬ sive materials have been used for floors and side walls. Special drain fix¬ tures have been designed. Floors have been underlined with sheet lead. All sorts of costly experiments have been employed. But all of these have been subject to the settlement, shrinkage and vibration of the building, which opened cracks and gave the water a chance to seep through to the ceiling below. Fortunately the positive method for constructing a water-tight shower en¬ closure has now been found. It is simply this:—to make a water-tight compartment and set it into the building as a self-sufficient unit. Fhis unit virtually “rides” the building as it settles , shrinks, or vibrates. As the floor and walls of this unit are not integral with the building struc¬ ture, they are subjected to no strain as a result of the above factors tv hie h occur in every building. The general adoption of the shower bath can now go fonvard at the pace tv hie h its merit justifies. Universal "Demand 7 IAT Perfected Shower Bath Compartments have been more / • extensively adopted by Architects, Builders and Sanitary Engineers than any other shower units. They incorporate features of construction which constitute advantages not obtainable in other products. The features enumerated below are some of the characteristics which account in a large measure for their unprecedented acceptance. First and foremost, Fiat Perfected Shower Bath Compartments are absolutely leak-proof. Fiat ""Perfected Shower Path Compartments — Are distinctive in appearance. Have receptor with proper floor surface which affords secure footing, is immune to corrosion and never requires refinishing. Stand rigidly erect and are installed independently of the surround¬ ing walls or floor. Eliminate lead pan, special drains, grouting, and all costly and special features of construction. Are unexcelled for sanitation. May be installed as a single unit, recessed, exposed or in batteries. Can be equipped with glass doors. All Fiat Shower Bath Compart¬ ments have door openings of standard size, so that compartments not originally furnished with glass doors may be so equipped at any subsequent time. Are easily and conveniently installed, due to “knock-down” con¬ struction. Compartments can be taken through any door opening and assembled at point of installation. RECEPTOR The Foundation of the Eft ^Perfected Shower Hath Compartment The Vi at T{eceptor REGULAR TYPE PATENT APPLIED FOR The polished black marble inlay on a white background produces an extremely attractive surface, which will harmonize with any ter- razzo, art marble, tile, etc., bathroom floor. Nothing to wear off or refinish The receptor has a smooth floor surface but it is so finished as to prevent slipping A Solid One-Piece, Water-Tight Receptor—Drain Included Manufacturing Process The very finest quality (chemically treated) of waterproof white cement and Vermont marble chips are used in making the Fiat Receptor. These ingredients are thoroughly tamped and puddled in a steel mould, resulting in a mass of maximum density which insures its superior water-tight qualities. After this process the receptor is placed in a curing room for a period of thirty days, from which it emerges to receive a hand-polish¬ ing process which produces its attractive appearance. Advantages of One-Piece Construction The fiat receptor is not “Built-In” as part of the floor on which it rests, nor of the room walls which surround it. This factor is of the utmost importance, as it prevents the future possibility of the receptor cracking, often caused by settlement or vibration of the build¬ ing walls and floors. J^eak-Proof Construction Galvanized steel flange thoroughly embedded in body of receptor encases - bottom of compartment, making leakage impossible Perforations in flange insure bond No sharp corners or crevices The wall of shower en¬ closure is secured directly to one-inch extension of galvanized steel flange One-half inch expanded steel mesh reinforcing ex¬ tends across entire receptor The Fiat Receptor, which is a complete, one- piece “shower” floor, eliminates the use of lead pan, special drain fittings, grouting, and all ex¬ pensive methods of shower floor construction. Height at which receptor is set with relation to finished floor can vary several inches. Installation on rough floor with finished floor laid to sides of receptor is recommended. Drain fixture integral with receptor is set over 2,-inch iron waste pipe. The strainer is removed to caulk the joint. l,J ; PATENT APPLIED FOR Four and one-half inch flat head white metal strainer and drain with removable face, set flush with the receptor floor, allows for inside caulking of x-inch waste pipe connection or where so desired, lead connection can be used by soldering to the inside shoulder of the drain provided for that purpose The Tiat Teceptor EXTENDED TYPE Provides double safeguard against carelessness of bathers Recommended for new construction and remodeling work: can be installed on any kind of floor Receptor extends n inches in front of compartment to catch all spray, splashings, and drippings from curtain Water caught in front of com¬ partment drains back to main part of receptor PATENT APPLIED FOR A Receptor for Compartments Equipped with Curtain. '"‘ADMIRAL Eft "Perfected Shower Path Compartments ['> THE ADMIRAL 4 1 WITH REGULAR RECEPTOR AND NAUTILUS DOOR - uH.;-' r>; ?:>**.> \ ' •> v - VW . v 'v-<* "•*«* r k PATENT APPLIED FOR The Admiral is a shower bath compartment designed for those who require the ultimate in bathing facilities. Every requisite and refinement that could be desired is embodied in this fixture. The dazzling white porcelain walls of the compartment, the hand polished, marble inlaid surface of the receptor, the door frame finished to harmonize with the color decoration of the bathroom, gives an air of ultra completeness. The Fiat Admiral is the only shower compartment made having porcelain enameled walls. All Fiat Shower Bath Compartments have door openings of standard size, so that compart¬ ments not originally furnished with glass doors may be so equipped at any subsequent time. «1 PATENT APPLIED FOR THE ADMIRAL 4 WITH EXTENDED RECEPTOR When the Admiral is not equipped with plate glass door, its utility is greatly enhanced by the extended receptor, which is a distinctive and practical improvement. The nickel plated rod is placed in the compartment so that the curtain is drawn behind the front stiles, thus obtaining the maximum possible protection from the curtain—but the ex¬ tended receptor affords additional protection. A clean, dry floor awaits the bather when emerging from the compartment, as the extended portion of the receptor receives and drains off any water which the shower curtain fails to confine. THE ADMIRAL DESCRIPTION |See page 18 for architects' specifications ]} 4 Receptor: The Admiral can be furnished with either regular or extended receptor. (See Pages io-n- 12 .). Compartment Walls: The compartment walls of The Admiral are made from No. 16 gauge, stretcher leveled sheets of the finest obtainable grades of enameling iron. The Fiat three-piece feature of construction has been incorporated in the Admiral with especial view to simplicity and ease of assembling for installation. The panels are so designed as to form a full length, absolutely leakproof compartment. The porcelain enameled enclosure is installed on the receptor shoulder and fits firmly against the inside of the receptor flange. Details of construction are shown on opposite page. Door Stiles and Headrail: The Admiral is a fixture of superb quality which demands a chaste richness in every detail. The beauty of the Fiat hollow metal stile and head- rail design adequately and strikingly fulfills this demand. Unless otherwise specified the door stiles and headrail of the Admiral are furnished with prime coat of paint only. This permits the finishing of these exposed surfaces to conform with the dec¬ orations of the bathroom interior. Color Finish: The compartment walls of the Admiral are finished in a beautiful, snow white porcelain enamel, such as is used for the finest bathroom fixtures. This hard, high glaze is absolutely impervious to wear and never has been equalled for cleanli¬ ness and sanitation such as the bathroom requires. A narrow blue black band around the top and bottom supplies a touch of contrast which makes the compartment, with its smooth glossy white panel surfaces, a veritable thing of beauty. Entrance Protection: The Nautilus shower door as illustrated on pages 14 and 2.6 is especially recommended for use with the Admiral. This door combined with the porcelain enameled compartment offers the utmost obtainable in a shower bath enclosure. Nickel plated curtain rod can be provided if desired. Location of Valves: Standard drilling in the Admiral is for two valve controls and shower head located toward the front on the left hand side when entering compart¬ ment. It is recommended that standard drilling be used if possible, as complete fabrication and finishing of an Admiral requires several weeks and a special compart¬ ment must be made when drillings are other than standard. Regular equipment con¬ sists of individual compression valves with removable seats, china escutcheons and china handles, and nickel-plated extension arm with removable shower head. Back and side panels assembled with case hardened sheet metal screws Rust-proofed metal moulding forms ground for plaster when compartment is recessed Panels are of white porcelain enameled iron with blue black border at top and bottom Compartment walls drawn tight against receptor flange with case hardened, rust-proofed sheet metal screws Panels locked into one piece hol¬ low metal stiles by spring steel tubing Receptor flange enters stile and is concealed from front Compartment rests on receptor shoulder inside of receptor flange Corner construc¬ tion renders leak¬ age impossible PATENT APPLIED FOR THE ADMIRAL Details of Construction Showing Compartment Assembled 4 Note: Minor changes in Fiat Shower Bath Compartments may be made from time to time and prevailing standard models will be furnished on all orders notwithstanding possible variation from details as illustrated and described in this catalog. E ENSIGN Eli Perfected Shower Path Compartments AVERY LI COLUMBIA U on - . r>\/ Bruit Mi THE ENSIGN 4 1 WITH REGULAR RECEPTOR AND MARINE DOOR PATENT APPLIED FOR A Shower Bath Compartment especially designed for installation in hotels, apartment buildings and the smaller type of residences and bungalows where economy is desired without sacrifice of refinement and beauty of appearance. The hand polished, marble inlaid surface of the receptor, combined with a compartment which may be finished in any desired color, so as to harmonize with the decorations of the bathroom, make the “Ensign” a most popular model. All Fiat Shower Bath Compartments have door openings of standard size, so that compart¬ ments not originally furnished with glass doors may be so equipped at any subsequent time. PATENT APPLIED FOR THE ENSIGN 4 WITH EXTENDED RECEPTOR The Ensign with the extended receptor offers additional distinction and service. This practical improvement prevents an accumulation of water on the bathroom floor in front of the shower enclosure thru carelessness on the part of the bather. Where users are many, precaution should be taken against the thoughtlessness of those who let the cur¬ tain hang outside the compartment or fail to fully close the entrance when the shower is in use. This protection is strongly recommended both for new buildings and for installations of additional bathing facilities in buildings already erected. THE ENSIGN DESCRIPTION {See page 24 for architects' specification ]} Receptor: The Ensign can be furnished with either regular or extended receptor. (See Pages IO-H-I2-). Compartment Walls: The compartment walls of The Ensign are made of No. 16 gauge, open hearth, full pickled, hot galvanized, stretcher leveled sheet steel, chemically treated to insure proper adherance of paint. These walls form a rigid, full length, leakproof enclosure which rests on the receptor shoulder, fitting snugly inside of the receptor flange. The compartment is of three piece “knocked down” construction which greatly facilitates handling and in¬ stallation. Details of construction are illustrated on the opposite page. Door Stiles and Headrail: The door stiles and headrail are of hollow metal construc¬ tion. This is a very important factor, as the hollow metal members conform in design to the contour of the receptor threshold and lend a touch of refinement to the appearance of the entire compartment. There are no sharp edges. All corners are slightly beveled. Color Finish: Before leaving the factory the steel compartment receives a heavy coat of especially prepared, gray, waterproof, mineral paint which adheres without peeling or chipping and forms a proper base for finish coats which are applied after the shower is installed. Not less than two finish coats should be applied. Any color may be selected to harmonize with the bathroom interior. Entrance Protection: The Ensign can be furnished with plate glass shower door or equipped for use of regulation shower curtain. Where curtain is used, a Nickel Plated Brass curtain rod with flanges is furnished as part of the compartment. Valves: Valves are regularly located on left-hand side when entering compartment, and a little in front of center. Drilling for other locations can be furnished when specified. Regular equipment consists of individual compression valves with removable seats, china escutcheons and china handles, and nickel-plated extension arm with remov¬ able shower head. Receptor flange enters stile and is concealed from front Side and back panels are of full pickled galvanized stretcher leveled sheet steel Spring steel moulding spot welded to side panel forms groove into which back panel is forced. The Towers Shower SMixer Price, $55.00 A Shower Mixer that insures a uniform water temperature regardless of pressure changes in water supply lines. Especially recommended for institutions where fool-proof and scald-proof mixers are required. These valves can be connected to high pressure steam (up to 150 lbs.) and cold water supply at 10 or more lbs. pressure and still give an even temperature of water as desired. Powers Shower Mixers are made entirely of brass and bronze, finished in rough nickel with dials and handles polished. China dials and handles or white metal dials, handles and exposed parts can be furnished without extra charge. Built-in Check Valves are provided as Standard Equipment 0 Mixers are equipped with y^-inch Union Connections. Elbow Connections will be furnished if specified, without extra charge How It Works Pressure Equalizing Valve “A” is a free floating piston carrying on its ends valves, B B, which control the admission of the hot and cold water, respectively, to the mixing valve, C. So long as the initial pressures of hot and cold water are equal, this piston occupies the neutral position shown in the drawing, but upon the slightest disturbance, such as is always occasioned by the use of nearby plumbing fixtures, the pre¬ ponderating pressure moves the piston sufficiently so that the valves by proportionately restricting the higher and favoring the lower pressure, maintain in the mixing valve, C, the perfect balance of pressures necessary to maintain the set temperature. Complete failure of either supply substantially cuts off the other. The hot and cold water after passing the equalizing valves, B B, enters the passages, E E, which surround the mixing valve, and passing through the portholes mix in the center of this valve. The mixing valve moves forward as the mixer handle is turned to the left toward hot and successively uncovers cold and hot outlet water ports, the extent of the move¬ ment determining the proportions and temperature of the mixture. With the first opening of the valve, therefore, cold water flows, warming, however, as further valve movement admits more hot and less cold water. A safety heat limiting screw D, which may be reached by removing handle screw F and inserting a slender screw driver through hollow stem G, provides means for limiting the opening of the hot ports, thereby preventing the possi¬ bility of a scalding mixture.
