These varicus works now classified and catalogued form the basis ot wiiiii is iioped auvl expected lo become in course of years the best and nio>t complete iU)rary of its kind in iiie civilized world. li i.^ .helved -in the elegant fire-proof build- ing of the ld)rary of Columbia College, in the city uf New York, wjiere it is accessible at all time- f.-^r stU'iv and reference. rhu> kir tne ire.isurc- h.ive lieen largely presents from the founders of the Society and ihcir iViends, alilu-u-h a cun^dera- bie number of the most rare and valuable tomes m Uic collec- tion have been secured b\- purchase, ddie aeknowledgmeni of the gdts has l)een atte)n|)teil in the pages of tlii- catalogue, and ha.s been rendered complete so far as the data can be dis- covered m the early rec'-rds of^ the collection. Any omissions ot which the Lil)rary Committee are advised will be corrected in the next edition of the catalogue. Henceforward all entries Vill l.\ IK' >DUCTIU.N of additions to the lil)rary will be made in tlie Accession l>0(jk with precision, and each new xolunie will be numbered and placed in its proper class upon the slielves. The classification of the collection lias been conducted with special reference to the needs aiid cunvenience of the readers and investigators who are seeking information concerning the Huguenots, tlieir emigrati(Mis and various settlements, and their extraordinary iniluence upon the commerce and the re- ligious and social life of the countries whicli alTorded tliem a refuge from religious {)ersecution. W'lien time is precious it is desirable that a particular book, or l)ooks on a particular subject, may be obtaineti in the (piickest as well as tlie easiest manner. While this library is necessarily a special collection, many of the books bear indirectly on Huguenot history, and are thus rendered more useful and accessible if j)laced in a class quite distinct from Huguenot literature. Under each class the books are arranged alphabetically by the author's name, with the exception of individual biography and genealogy. Anonymous books, if tlie author is unknown, are entered under the title. No attempt has been made to classify the pamphlets, which are arranged alphabetically by the author's name. The author index represents the entire library, including books, pamphlets and manuscripts. The number at the right of each entry in the catalogue corresponds to the number gilded on the back of the book. To send for a particular book it is necessary to use this num- ber only. The scheme of classification is given as follows, with the number of volumes at the present time in each class : j INIRODUCTION TLAX OF C I.A SS 1 F IC AT I r.X. IX NO. OF VOLUMES. Class A.
