The Columbian Crown Heater represents an entirely new departure in stove con¬ struction, and enables the dealer to supply a strong, powerful and economical heater for hotel offices, small churches, school houses and station rooms. This heater is made to operate upon the ventiduct system, and hence heats by circulation and radiation. The cut illustrates it as a double heater operating upon the circulation system, doing double work. We indicate by this illustration that the Columbian Crown Heater is of sufficient power to permit opening the register and hot-air damper in the crown top at one and the same time. The arrows shown in the cut indicate the course of the rapidly-moving currents of cold and warm air under the draft of this heater. By this process the room in which the heater operates is rapidly and quickly emptied of cold air and supplied with warm air. The forces of attraction and radiation are in operation as long as the heater is fired. We call the dealers’ and consumers’ special attention to this important feature and construction of all our leading double heating stoves. The swing cover can be re¬ moved or set aside for the purpose of using a boiler or kettle for hot water. The heater can be recommended and will sell at sight because of its superiority and sim¬ plicity. Crown and School House Heater Measurements. Xo. Height to Bottom of Swing Cover. The ordinary heater does not prove effective because the system of radiation alone requires the full pressure of the draft from the early morning hour until the school is called; and the pupils who sit near the stove suffer from too high a degree of heat, while those more remote are as uncomfortable in the opposite direction. Our Columbian School Heater with its system of circulation will operate as we direct; create an even temperature in all parts of the room, and hence supply comfort to all. The operation is simple and is easily understood. Figure 3, page 96, represents the School Heater in operation. The cold air channel under the floor, running from the north to the heater, is to supply the room with fresh, pure air by passing it through the hot-air chamber of the heater into the school room. The cast iron base in which the heater sets is supplied with a register to regulate the supply of cold air, so that driving winds cannot lower the temperature of the room below the desired degree. The cold air should be freely admitted through the cold-air channel (during the hours school is closed), say from early morning until school is called, and during recess and noon, with a very limited supply during the night. When the school is in session, close the damper in the base pan and open the registers on both sides of the heater, and the colder currents of air lying in the school room will be rapidly drawn from the floor throughout the entire room and changed in temperature by a rapid circulation through the hot-air chamber of the heater. The school room should be ventilated as shown in Figure 3. By building the chimney in two departments; the chimney proper should be a cast pipe not less than six inches in diameter (the larger the better), located in the centre of the ventilating chimney, which should be not less than 10X15 between walls. The ventilating flue should be opened to admit the air from the school room, by use of a register 9X12 located close to the ceiling and one of the same size near the floor. The one near the ceiling should be operated by cord attachments within reach of the teacher, to relieve the room when the temperature is too high. The one at the bottom should be kept open all the while for the exit of cold and vitiated air. 94 School House Heater Directions. Figure i. Figure 2. First —Use good, hard-burning chestnut coal. Second —Start the lire by closing the check damper in the pipe, closing the register wheel in the feed door and opening the register damper in the ash-pit door. Third —To check the lire, close the ash-pit door and the ash-pit door slide; keep the clinker door closed at all times, except when you wish to remove clinkers from the fire by means of the poker. To Further Check the Fire. Open the check damper in the pipe the required distance. To Carry the Fire Over Night. First free the fire from all dead matter and put in a good charge of fresh coal. Should the chimney draft be very strong, open the check draft full; and if that carries the fire through the night too high—that is, burns out too closely—then open the register wheel in the feed door. This setting, with a clean fire, should carry the fire for forty-eight hours. The cold air is closed off in the base pan when the word “ Shut ” is cov¬ ered with the damper handle. When this is closed, or partly closed or regulated, be very careful to have the registers in the sides of the heater opened. The side registers of the heater should be operated ac¬ cording to the suggestions given in the description of the heater. The registers placed in the sides of the heater draw the cold air off, as indicated by the arrows in the cut. These are the registers referred to immediately above. 95 AS OATH Figure 3. The above cut represents our Columbian Banner Furnace Check Dampers, suitable for six, seven and eight-inch pipe, and should be used on our School Heater. Hot-air Furnaces should be checked without passing the cold air through the radiating drums. Our Furnace Check Damper applied to the pipe checks the furnace without suddenly cooling the drums. This damper, which is supplied with a ratchet stop for the ad¬ mission ofi cold air, serves to check the fire, holding it in a very low state of com¬ bustion, thus reducing the consumption of coal to a minimum. These Dampers can be used on stoves of any kind having pipe the size of the Dampers, viz: six, seven or eight-inch pipe. No. 6 . 7 and 8 96 net, $0 20 ■ net, 25 Figure 5 is an additional illustration of the interior of the school room or building. The purpose of this figure is to assist the school committee or builders to a clearer understanding of our system, with the end in view that they can construct their chim¬ ney so that the Heater and Ventilator can be supplied without any change in the in¬ terior of the building. The ventilating flue is supposed to be part of the building and should be built between walls 12X20 inches. The gas flue indicated by the dotted lines represents a cast or wrought pipe not less than seven inches clear in diameter. This gas flue runs up and through the centre of the ventilating flue space 12X20 inches. To this gas flue the Heater and Ventilator is attached, as shown in Figure 3, page 96. The register ventilators are located in the walls of the ventilating flue, as illustrated in Figure 5, and open the way for cold, hot and vitiated air into the ventilating flue. To thoroughly understand this the purchaser should read pages 94, 95, 96 of this catalogue. In ordering the Heater and Ventilator state whether you want it for anthracite or bituminous coal. 97 COLUMBIAN ULSTER Four Sizes. With this construction there is no better Ice Preserver on the Market. The outer case of all our Refrigerators and Ice Chests is made of selected hard¬ wood, thoroughly dried in Hot Air Dry Kilns. The panels are in one piece and are grooved into the rails and stiles, which are mortised together in the most substantial manner, making a perfectly tight cabinet. The joining and cabinet work are the best obtainable. The inner case, or body, is of kiln-dried, closely matched, odorless wood, lined with metal, and fastened together with hardwood cleats, which support the outside case, making a Refrigerator which for strength, durability and beauty cannot be equaled. The space between the outer and inner cases is filled with the best non-con¬ ducting material known, our Mineral Wool Filling, and this filling is so put in that it cannot settle or shake down. The floors of the Provision Chamber are covered with metal and are on a level with the bottom of the door, making it easier to keep clean should anything be spilled therein. Provision Chambers are furnished with metal shelves, cleanliest made, and so open as to offer no obstruction to the circulation of air. The Locks and Hinges are made of solid bronze. The Water Tank is white porcelain lined, with solid bronze faucet. All of our Refrigerators are mounted on patented casters, the larger sizes being provided with heavy two-wheeled anti-friction castors. 1 13 “ PEERLESS REFRIGERATORS.” “ Peerless ” Golden Oak Finish will stand years of wear. To put in a new cylinder, the stove may be parted in the centre by taking out four bolts. The magazine lifts out at the top without removing or disturbing a bolt. The grate can be removed and placed in position through the ash door. The farmer, laborer, or any person with screw driver, wrench and hammer, can very quickly and easily repair this heater. We hope that the purchaser will see that the order is clear. The construction is made with the idea of making repairing easy and simple. The magazine, which is made in two sections, can be repaired by removing the lower section (No. 7 in illustration) and replacing the new piece through the front doors, without removing any of the outside parts of the stove. THE FIRE POT.—To remove the Fire Pot you simply take out the four bolts (marked Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 in illustration), this enables you to remove the entire front, then lift out the front fire pot rest (No. 20 in illustration) and remove the fire pot. The fire pot can then be put in and all parts replaced. Cement all joints carefully. THE GRATE.—To replace the grate remove the bolts in the division plate (No. 11 in illustration) where the stove parts and the grate can be removed and replaced. * The repair man should careful/ distinguish between these two covers and clearly state which is needed. 121 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. Columbian Oak. Sectional View of Nos. 15 and 17—Single and Double Heater. SW** COVIB REGISTER TOP & OAMPEJ* ONOCR TOR HEATER MIDDLE OUTSIDE RINS HEATER MiOOtE INSIDE RING The Above Illustrations Show the Important Parts of Our Columbian Oak Stove as Well as the Heater Section of the Double Heater. The cylinder is securely fastened to the base with four bolts. The hot-air blast is formed by bolting the hot-blast ring to the top of cylinder. The air is admitted to the hot-blast chamber by passing underneath the fender ring through the opening in the hot-blast ring, from there into the combustion chamber at top of cylinder. The removal of four bolts underneath the fender ring separates the stove into two parts if desired, which makes it convenient and easy to handle. The grate is easily agitated by applying the shaker through the opening at shaker door. The wood grate can be used in application with the coal grate by putting it in place resting on the coal grate. The feed door is decorated with nickel name plate, tile trade-mark and mica sec¬ tion through which the owner can view the operation of the hot-blast fire in the com¬ bustion chamber. 122 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. To illustrate, do you want the front for the Range where oven door is on, or front of Reservoir part of Range? Make the distinction clear. Use the same care when ordering back or any part of a Reservoir Range. Tops, Covers, etc., should be carefully defined as to where they belong. This Plate Lies be¬ tween Fire End Oven Plate (No. 8) and Oven Brick. Read Matter on Fire Boxes Given Below. In some Ranges we use three (3) bar grates. For repairs the order should clearly state the number of bars in the grate. The above cut illustrates the Bed Plates, Shaker Bar, Cog and Shaker of a two-bar Triplex Grate and Short Bar and Cog of Triplex Grate. The lower cut illustrates a Range Fire Box with the linings named as we name them at our works. The end or lining marked “Front Key” is sometimes called front grate, because it is opened along the bottom like a grate. The “ Back Key ” may be brick or iron, and is brick in our New Cappello and Choice Ranges. The wall between the oven and fire box is composed of three parts, “ Oven Plate ” proper, “ Fire Plate ” and “ Oven Brick.” The “ Fire Plate ” lies between the oven brick or cast linings (when such are used) and the “ Oven Plate ” proper. The words “ Back Wall ” are sometimes used for one division of the lininq- between the oven and the fire box; in such instances we are unable to decide whether the customer wants brick or cast lining or fire plate, hence we prefer that our customers shall use our names if they wish us to clearly understand their wants. Linings are sometimes ordered less “ Water Back Brick,” or “ Grate Brick,” as they are sometimes designated by us. Water Back Brick Clamps, Oven Brick Clamps, Triplex Grates, Brick Rests and Grate Carriers, with the parts illustrated in lower cut, complete a full fire box lining. Be careful to notice and mention in your order the location of the fire box, whether it is located at the Right or Left or the Oven. 127 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. Reservoir Top and Fire Box Illustrations. The other six (6) illustrations represent the Cast-Iron Lining for a Range Fire Box, where cast lining is used, except front key lining or front grate, which goes in common with both iron or fire-brick linings. Some of our ranges are built with what we term front and back cast “ key linings,” and brick are used along the oven and opposite side of fire-box. The six illustrations in the above group represent iron lining used in the New Cappello, Columbian Choice, Star, Echo, etc. The three illustrations to the left represent linings for the stoves when used for wood burning only. They form a very complete fire box for wood burning by removing the coal fixtures. The fire box when arranged with these plates for wood burning is very clean and economical as a wood burner and a per¬ fect baker. We challenge any maker to pro¬ duce a better fire box for wood burning. 128 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. Columbian Jasper and Columbian Emblem. This illustration is intended to help the Dealer get his order clear. In these Fire Boxes the Brick Rest is both Brick Rest and Grate Carrier. The long bottom Wood Grate with the Oven Wood Lining and End Wood Lining are the three cast pieces which make a Fire Box for wood burning, includ¬ ing the brick rest or grate carrier upon which the bottom wood grate rests. The short piece marked Loose Bottom Wood Plate is intended to be used for burning wood in a complete coal lined Fire Box, by using it upon the Triplex Grate, hence it is called loose wood plate or crate and should read that way in the order, when desired. For a Range we call the narrow ends “ FRONT and BACK” and the cast linim used front and back are called FRONT and BACK KEYS. (See illustration.) The Oven side is called Oven Linii g; opposite side, Fire End Lining. In all Ranges we call the side opposite oven, the fire box. The Oven and Fire End is lined with iron stone lining (brick) and front and back cast iron. The illustration, however, represents a full set of cast linings for wood and coal. The cast linings for coal for Oven and Left End are in two pieces, for wood burning they are in one piece. Brick Linings are used in th se Ranges as a rule. The cast lining the exception; hence every order in which cas; linings are desired should be clearly written and ex¬ pressed either for a complete set of linings for Wood burning or Cast Iron for Coal. New Cappello and Colum¬ bian Choice have inter¬ changeable Fire Boxes, Covers and Cross Pieces. In these fire boxes the grate rests are narrow pieces called front and back Grate “ Carriers ” and are the narrow way across the fire box under the Brick Rest. The Brick Rest is applied in two parts, one the nar¬ row straight piece under the Water Back. This is done to remove and supplv it without disturbing the Water Back and Connec¬ tions in repairing. Remember the narrow ends of the fire box are Front and Back in Ranges so con¬ sidered by us. These Ranges can be lined with Cast Linings all told in six (6) pieces; Front and Back Keys, Oven Linings (two pieces), opposite oven (two pieces). Opposite oven is sometimes called Grate or Water Back Brick or Lining. Between the Oven Plate and the Oven Brick in some Ranges we use a Cast Plate called “ Fire Plate,” see illustration page 134. From the illustration the purchaser ought to be able to describe his needs including Brick, Clamp, Prop and Grate and Cogs. The Columbian Star and Echo are supplied with grate carriers after the fashion of the New Cappello, but not inter¬ changeable. 130 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. Group of Tops for Ranges. This group of Tops is illustrated for the purpose of assisting the dealer to order repairs. Tops are differently made in their skeleton parts. No. i illustrates the PEERLESS, ALTRORA and EXPERT as they are now made and comprise the Front Top, End Tops, Back Top, Tee Centre, Long-Cut Centre and Short Centre. No. 2 illustrates the COLUMBIAN CHOICE, NEW CAPPELLO, STAR, ECHO and COLUMBIAN CHARM, and Nos. 8-20 and 9-20 COLUMBIAN, JASPER and EMBLEM Tops as they were made since 1895 and comprises Front Top, Feed Door Centre or Expension Piece, Two-Hole or Flue End Top, Long-Cut Centre, Short Centre and Drop Shelf. No. 3 represents the COLUMBIAN CHARM (Series “B”) Top, BEAUTY, DAISY, ROSE, FAIRY, WALDRON, JASPER and EMBLEM (except Nos. 8-20 and 9-20) Tops, and comprises Top, Feed Door Centre or Expansion Piece, Short Centre, Centre Top or Bolted Centre and Drop Shelf. The NEW CAPPELLO and PLATO have been altered a number of times, so that the description will not answer for the Top of those Ranges since they were first made, hence you must be guided by the style of Top. The dealer, when ordering repairs such as are illustrated above (Tops, Centres and Covers) will aid the manufacturer if he is careful to secure from his customer the name, number, improvement dates and date of issue, full and clear, for any article needing repairs. We appreciate the difficulty in getting the thing needed, and with the end in view of helping the customer, we ask him to examine all our cuts illustrating the parts of Stoves, so that the order may be clearly made up. An order clearly made up, with the details, means prompt shipment, removes all guess work and renders satisfaction to purchaser and seller. 131 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. Names of Parts of Flat-Top Cooks. The fire plate lies between the first lining, which may be brick or cast iron, and the front oven plate. Columbian Merit, Rival and Special fire boxes are not fitted with fire plates. When the term “ back wall ” is used we are at a loss to know which article is desired, the oven brick or cast lining or fire plate. The spaces between 22 and 20 and 18 and 21 represent the cold-air passages leading to the hot-air chamber in itbe rear of the range. The air in entering the passages becomes highly heated and is carried through the hot-air chamber of the range to the room above. This form of hot-air generator is the most modern and efficient offered to the trade. The grate frame with triplex grates mounted, rest under the bed plate. These can be drawn out and replaced as illustrated in the cut through the ash-pit door, without disturbing the tire box. The top oven plate can be lifted out through the top by remov¬ ing the covers and the two bolts in the front, which hold the top oven plate. This simple construction and the ease with which this range can be repaiied is a commend¬ able and selling feature. 133 REPAIR DEPARTMENT. New Cappello Range. Remember, your furnace is to heat the house, say from six to eight rooms. To do this with stoves would require as many stoves as half the number of rooms, or more. To operate these stoves in freezing weather would require no little attention and neces¬ sitate a heavy drain on your coal bin. Do not be unreasonable and expect the furnace to do the work of three or four stoves, comfortably heating your house from the hall to the last room in it, without having a share of your attention, and drawing from the coal bin the necessary material to make the house comfortable. In order to radiate heat, the furnace must be raised to the proper temperature to do the work. To raise the temperature of the furnace to that degree requires a clean fire; that means the removal of all dead matter from the fire pot, and a slow, bright fire on the grate. Dead matter in the fire pot is of no service to the furnace, and that fire pot, from the grate up, which is filled with ashes, is useless as a radiator until it is freed from the accumulation of dead matter. Trouble caused by an accumulation of dead matter in your stove would at once cause you to remove the source of the difficulty. A furnace is a heater with increased capacity, and when the thermometer is down to the freezing point the furnace must be cleaned and fed to meet the requirements. Give Your Furnace Plenty of Cold Air for Rapid Circulation. The KEELEY STOVE COMPANY warrants their goods to do the work for which they were designed when local circumstances are not faulty, such as bad setting, imper¬ fect chimneys, and very many imperfections in construction, not the fault of the stove or furnace builder. 142 Hot Air and Hot Water—Furnace Department. 6 Series. 23 Sizes. The tinsmith or furnace man who proposes casing one of our furnaces must re¬ member that from the top of the steel drums to the top of a flat cone there must be not less than twelve inches. To contract the warm-air pipe below the measurements we suggest is to do violence to your furnace and coal supply, and not reach the temperature you desire. The carpenter, builder and architect are not wholly faultless, and the fur¬ nace man is very often obliged to work after the work they have spoiled in the start, since one or both may have so constructed their work and created local defects which the furnace man cannot overcome without the loss of work for the one, the friendship of the other, perhaps both. The register is no less a factor. A ten-inch register is reduced by the face 33 per cent., hence care should be taken to have the register equal to the capacity of the pipe to which it is attached. The estimates placed upon capacity of our furnaces are very carefully calculated, and when the furnace has been properly arranged, can be relied upon with a reasonable degree of accuracy. To warm a house with a furnace, care and thought should be given in the laying of the foundation and construction of the division walls. The location of the pipes and suggestions as to the size of pipes are so very helpful with the construction of the wall that they should not be overlooked. If possible, keep your risers out of the north or west walls. If you must lead in this direction see that your pipes are well covered with a good coating of asbestos the entire length. A small house with an unusual number of small rooms requires more labor and coal with a larger furnace to heat it than a larger one with less apartments. The tradesman and purchaser should not be parsimonious in these points and give the manufacturer, dealer and himself trouble. Every room and hall in a building should be connected with the furnace independently of the warm air supply of any other depart¬ ment of the building; that is to say, from the start to finish there should be but one register in any one pipe leaving the furnace. You cannot successfully at the same time heat two rooms off one pipe. The additional expense incurred in this form of con¬ struction is more than returned in the comfort experienced. In heating a single audience room for school or church, to carry the heat from your furnace through a number of small pipes with the registers placed here and there in the floor, as against one large pipe off the top of your furnace, with a register of ample capacity, is to do violence to your furnace and coal supply. When one straight pipe is used a hot air damper between the top of the furnace and the register, with a door for an opening in the furnace casing for a hot air exit would be useful. 143 Practical Hints and Information. Sizes of Registers and Pipes Used, According to the Size of Room to be Warmed. First Floor Rooms, io-inch Pipes, with io X 16 Registers. First Floor Rooms, io-inch Pipes, with io X 14 Registers. Second Floor Rooms, 5 X 12 Riser, with 10 X 16 Registers. Round pipes from the furnace to riser pipes leading to upper rooms should be 8, 9 and io-inch diameter, according to the size of room to be warmed. The estimates of the heating capacities of the COLUMBIAN PRINCE and CLI¬ MAX furnaces are low, and when the furnace has been properly arranged, can be relied upon with safety. When heating school rooms, churches, stores, etc., and only one register is required and that directly over the furnace, you can safely count upon 15 per cent, additional capacity and under such circumstances use for the several sizes, not less than 20, 24 and 26-inch registers, and these should be without valves. When trenches are put under the furnace for a cold air supply see that it is of sufficient capacity to supply your furnace. It should be kept free from dust and dirt. NO. 38—Two-story house. Not less than 9-inch pipes first floor. Not less than 8-inch pipes second floor. NO. 42—Two-story house. 1 o-inch pipes first floor, 9-inch pipes second floor. REPAIRS—To get the proper shaker or grate bars to repair the CLIMAX, PRINCE and NOS. 328, 332, 336 and 340 BANNER Furnaces, the order should clearly indicate whether the shaker bars of the grate protrude through the front of the fur¬ nace or whether it is necessary to pass the shaker through the front to fit it to the shaker bars. State if furnace bears the marks “ Series A ” or not. When ordering repairs we caution you to get correct name and number. REGISTERS—The capacity of the registers should be equal to the hot air pipes to which they are attached. The measurements on page 145, if examined, will be helpful in the selection of the size of a register for a given size pipe. Registers placed in the floor of the lower rooms (down stairs) are the most prac¬ tical and beneficial as against side wall or partitions. 144 Capacity of Pipes and Registers. Round Registers. Figure 1. MS We seldom find a place for the use of 7-inch pipes in setting a furnace and recom¬ mend and insist on the use of large pipes. Small pipes and registers placed in par¬ titions and walls is an unwise form of construction, which, with an inadequate supply of cold air, warms the cellar, empties the coal bin and shortens the life of the furnace; hence we repeat, and with the use of line upon line, we appeal to architects, builders, tinsmiths and hardware men to so construct their work that the furnaces when in¬ stalled will not be compelled to work against local hindrances. Figure 3. In addition to what we have written in the shape of advice in the setting and oper¬ ating of a furnace, we print four illustrations for the study and consideration of the furnace man. These illustrations will be eminently helpful and will meet almost any and every emergency that may arise in furnace work. Figures Nos. 1 and No. 3 repre¬ sent a church heated with one of our furnaces and illustrates the plan and device of drawing the cold air from two places in the church, as well as two places from the out¬ side. The channels of cold air supply from inside and outside cannot be operated at one and the same time. When the cold air is taken from the church, the channels com¬ municating with the outside must be closed, and vice versa. Last but not least is the importance of having a good chimney with a strong draft. Before attaching the smoke pipe to the furnace and chimney the furnace man should thoroughly test the chimney to see that it is unobstructed from top to bottom and the draft good. If there be any openings in the chimney, other than the one used for the furnace connection, see that they are closed with neat fitting pipe collars, then with good mortar close the opening or space, if any, between the pipe and collar in the chimney. 146 The value of two small furnaces of equal capacity (or nearly so) over one large one should not be overlooked. The difference between extreme cold weather and days when very little fire is needed, argue in favor of the two-furnace plan. Many are the times in which one small furnace will heat a large church or room, saving coal and leaving you supplied with a reserved force in the second furnace for any attacking storms or blizzards. Any additional expense is worked off in time in the durability of the furnaces and you have secured for yourself the comfort desired. Hence, use two small furnaces instead of one having the capacity of both. It is better in large buildings. This form of construction will save a system of cuttle-fish piping, waste in radiation, friction, and carry the warm air quickly and surely to where it is needed. NEVER FAILS. Your furnace is designed to heat a given amount of space and the more rapidly you can throw the volume of hot air into the room to be heated Ithe quicker you accomplish the result. Long pipes, angles and bends are encumbrances causing friction, serve as radiators in cellars, weaken the strength and force power of the furnace and hence should be avoided. The one-pipe plan, where it is admissible, is equal to 80 per cent, of the furnace against its full capacity, if you were to run a number of pipes. Our illus¬ tration, Figure i, will help to make our ideas clear. The tapping of a cone or deck of a furnace should be carefully done. Do not take one pipe off the deck and the others off the side or cone. When you pipe for a dwelling which has a number of rooms, a church or public building, which must be heated by the furnace through a given number of pipes, tap all from the side of the cone or all from the deck on top. Short hot air pipes with all the elevation attainable add to the efficiency of your construction and the power of the furnace. Builders should place the inlets for the risers as close to the cellar joists as possible, so as to assist in the elevation of the pipes. Let your risers be of ample size; 5 X 10 is very much more serviceable than 4 X 12. To heat two rooms off one riser or pipe (one above the other) is not a good form of construction; that is, if you propose to heat them all at one and the same time. In the event of heating two rooms off one riser, a damper should be securely placed in the riser above the lower register, and the part of riser below the damper should be larger than that above. The question of location, sizes of risers, registers, etc., is seldom referred to the furnace man. The furnace builder must take the local conditions as he finds them, and in the event of failure, carry or pocket the entire loss, while his work may be wholly faultless. Our furnaces are absolutely gas tight; but no furnace is gas tight with the check draft and feed door open at one and the same time. The furnace man should exercise care and thought in setting registers. In the side w'alls the opening between the tin hot-air pipes and the opening in the walls should be closed with good mortar and fire proof material, which will form a solid wall around the tin frame to receive the register. The improper construction and location of heat pipes and registers means the maker of the furnace has insurmountable difficulties to meet. Hence too much care cannot be given to the details of work from start to finish. 147 UJ 3A09V aoj.vTfi5j3)i £ I / 1 1 1 1 1 1 Li ]MZZ^ aoou aN 033 ?i 1*" M0T39 WO "3 AOS V W Odd AlddflS aiV3XV-tO-l 148 By a careful study and consideration of the important points set forth in figures words, any ordinary person can successfully work out the plan suggested. The Columbian Climax Series “ B ” and Columbian Prince Series “ B ” Furnaces. These furnaces differ only that the CLIMAX has steel radiators. The PRINCE all cast iron. Buy a furnace large enough to do the work with ease. A small furnace can be overtaxed, run on a high degree of combustion, etc. In this way you wear out the life of the furnace, consume a larger amount of coal, lack the comfort needed, all because your furnace is too small. CONSTRUCTION—The CLIMAX Furnace is carefully and thoroughly con¬ structed with the end in view that dealers and consumers may be able to repair the fur¬ nace and supply the parts needed when they have worn their natural life. The entire front can be removed from the furnace without disturbing the casing. This gives free access to the ash pit and enables you to remove the guide over cogs on grate bar; then throw back to the right the latch on the right hand side of the front grate carrier. The Triplex Grate and center bar may then be removed and a new grate with fixtures re¬ placed with ease; put the front in position and you have completed the work without disturbing the hot-air pipes or cellar connection. Every square inch of radiating surface of this furnace is touched by the combustion and fire travel, from the grate surface to the exit, hence the greatest amount of utility is realized and the utmost benefit derived from the fuel consumed. TO CLEAN THE RADIATORS—This is easily done by inserting a scraper in the elbow at the rear and clean out door in front. CYLINDER RADIATION—This is not obstructed, as is the case in many fun naces, but the heat can rise rapidly to the hot air exit through the outward passage along the outer radiator, or between the inner and middle radiator; that is, through one or both channels, so that with a plentiful supply of coal there may be had the most efficient service and rapid movement of warm air currents obtainable. HOT BLAST—This is applied to assist combustion. The oxygen to create the hot blast is admitted through the register above the feed door into a hollow ring, from which the oxygen is admitted through small openings into the combustion chamber, where it comes in contact with and assists in igniting any unburned carbon which may arise. In this process we have perfect combustion. 149 COLUMBIAN CLIMAX SERIES “ B ” FURNACES. STEEL RADIATORS. 150 Made in Three Sizes. COLUMBIAN PRINCE SERIES “ B ” FURNACE. FINISHED. Cast Radiator All Cast. Cased With Three Casing Bodies and Cone Top. This furnace is complete with heavy cast iron cylinder and cast radiator. A cast iron furnace throughout. The radiator is constructed with a direct and indirect draft; governing damper , the radiator operated from the left hand side of the furnace in front. The direct straight draft is turned on by pulling the damper out. Where draft of the chimney is strong the furnace should be operated all the time with the damper handle pushed in, except when kindling the fire; this gives the user the full benefit of the combustion and fire travel and the gases into the chimney at as low a temperature as is possible to secure good and efficient work. Thi; Furnace is Warranted Heavy. Durable and Substantial. We have carefully marked and located the Extension Rings for the Prince Furnace. The Top Casing Ring is the UPPER EXTENSION RING; the next one below, the LOWER EXTENSION RING, the one still lower, which bolts to the top of the lower front, is MIDDLE CASING RING in three parts—right, left and back. Detailed Parts of the Columbian Climax “ B ” Furnace. Mounted Furnaces Illustrated on Pages 150, 151, 152. No. 1 illustrates the upper cylinder and neck with inside casing guide and upper front at¬ tached ready to place in position on top of lower fire pot, as shown on page 150, right-hand cut. Underneath the plate marked “ Putty the joints after front is attached,” is the hot-blast flue, the air entering as indicated by the curved arrows, the air is warmed by the travel through this flue, shown and completed in Figure 2, mixes with the rising gases which are ignited to complete the combustion. We use Figure 2 to show the cylinder inverted (looking into it from the bottom) so that the dealer may understand the construction and purpose of our hot-air blast. No. 3 shows the grate and ash-pit construction. Removing the lower front from the furnace, as illus¬ trated by middle cut on page 150, you get the ash-pit view as described in Figure 3, then remove grate guard in front of cogs, raise the latch on right end of front grate guard and you can drop the grate as indicated in the cut to remove and apply with ease any and all of the grate bars. This grate is the most durable and lasting made, and if the furnace man keeps the ash-pit clean the life of the grate will be satisfactory. No. 4 illustrates the steel radiator viewed from the bot¬ tom, showing the fire travel from the extreme top point to the front or outer radiator, traveling both ways, round the radiator to the exit. 154 COLUMBIAN BANNER FURNACE. SERIES A. Nos. 328, 332, 336, 340 and 344. REPAIRING—The above cut illustrates the complete grate drawn about one-half through the front of the ash pit. To remove the grate remove the bolts in the upper front at feed door and the two bolts in lower front, this will enable you to remove both fronts and clear the way after lifting the latch on left-hand side of grate rest, to draw it from the ash-pit, and replace any defective part for repairs. Use the names given in the above illustrated cut when ordering similar repairs. This furnace was first made applying shaker to grate bars through lower front. It is now made under additional name, “ Series A,” bringing shaker grate bar through front, applying shaker outside. Great care should be used when ordering grates or shaker, to clearly define the application needed. Read and communicate all the printed matter on your furnace. J 55 COLUMBIAN BANNER FURNACE.
