Foreword 
 
 T he range of usefulness in an effective and durable system of Directory, 
 Bulletin or Announcement Boards with Changeable Individual Letters 
 is readily apparent. With such an equipment changes may be made at 
 once and as often as desired without recourse to the manufacturer or his agent. 
 There is no enforced delay awaiting the preparation of new signs or units thereof. 
 Ours is the only system that affords these invaluable advantages. 
 
 Herein we illustrate and briefly describe specimen boards, evidencing some 
 of the employments to which these boards are adapted, likewise a list of some of 
 the buildings, institutions, clubs, armories and individuals that are using them to 
 advantage. 
 
 Only a few styles of frames are shown, some of them standard and some 
 reproduced to serve as suggestions. We are prepared, however, to provide 
 frames to suit individual preferences or to harmonize with any specified form of 
 interior decoration or architecture. 
 
 For out of doors, where exposed to the elements, an especially constructed 
 frame is required. Any design of frame may be modified to meet this require¬ 
 ment. 
 
 Drawings and photographs will be furnished when desired embraeing a wide 
 variety of treatment in frame design, from which selections may be made. To 
 architects particularly, when determining the size and form of wall space to be 
 allotted to the Directories of building occupants; our experience and suggestions 
 are often valuable. A definite decision as to location and space to be occupied 
 often involves a worth-while saving in expensive marble or interior trim. We 
 maintain a special department equipped to co-operate with architects along 
 these lines. 
 
 Our device eonsists of a grooved backboard, with special features forming 
 the basis of numerous patents, covered with cloth of a special quality, and sub¬ 
 divided into columns and spaces by enameled strips. The white letters are made 
 from a strong plastie material, and eaeh letter is provided with a spring which 
 holds it firmly in the groove. 
 
A recently invented system of interchangeable units enables the removal and 
 replacement of entire names or lines without rearranging contiguous names. 
 This especially advantageous feature will be furnished at a cost additional to 
 our solid backboard, if desired. (See illustration on page 13.) 
 
 The color of the cloth covering for the backboard is optional. Blue is in 
 demand and usually considered most appropriate for Office Building Directories. 
 For Bulletin Announcement Boards and other special signs maroon, green or 
 black may be used. Maroon cloth offers a striking contrast to the white letters, 
 and is often preferred for Announcement Boards and for Window Displays. 
 The beauty of the white polished letter contrasted against the dark background 
 gives to these signs a character that serves to neutralize their utilitarian purpose, 
 and makes of them an ornament as well as a necessity. In announcements 
 their attractiveness accomplishes greater publicity, and their distinction in this 
 respect is one of the foremost recommendations. 
 
 Most important of all, however, is the element of low cost. The boards and 
 equipment when purchased outright become a self-contained complete operating 
 unit in the hands of the purchaser, permanent for all time. Changes may be 
 made immediately and as often as desired, and the first cost is the final cost. 
 
 We publish a price list for standard boards which will be furnished upon 
 application, and prompt response be made to requests for estimates upon in¬ 
 dividual requirements. 
 
 In requesting quotations upon Building Directories please state the number 
 of offices for which provision must be made. 
 
 Hitherto our Directories and Bulletins have been sold outright, but for those 
 who might prefer, a plan of rental has been adopted, whereby the board and a full 
 complement of letters will be furnished upon lease at a moderate amount per 
 annum.
