FRANKTON INDIANA CATALOG N919.1913 WHY HOOSIER FENCES ARE BETTER EMERSON SAYS: “If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse trap than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.” HEN competitors are striving each against the other in their efforts to produce the lowest priced fence, quality is sure to suffer, and a fence slighted in quality is dear at any price. Buying a cheap fence is not economy—it’s a lamentable waste of good, hard-earned money. We began the manufacture of HOOSIER FENCES almost a quar¬ ter of a century ago and they at once became immensely popular not only because they were attractive, but because quality was self- evident, even at the first glance; and so we prospered nicely. Then came the competitors—they always follow in the wake of every great success. However, our competitors soon learned that it was no easy matter getting orders away from an established firm with a reputation for making thoroughly reliable fences. What were they to do? Well, cutting prices seemed to be their only hope, and that’s what they did; but you can rest assured they had to use cheaper and lighter material in their fences in order to do it. This competition hurt us for a while, we’ll frankly admit. The people, relying on pictures alone, had the idea that ornamental fences were all alike and imagined they were getting a bargain at the lower prices. One thing is certain, however, nobody is going to recommend an unsatisfactory fence to their friends and neighbors, and personal recommendations were selling more HOOSIER FENCES than all of our advertising. We knew that a reaction was bound to occur and after that fences would be bought on merit alone. Right then and there we determined to hold fast to our higher ideals—to practice every known economy in manufacturing and selling—to ask only a very, very small per cent, of profit—and to return to the buyer in quality all that we could save by these economies. So while HOOSIER FENCES cost only a trifle more than the very cheapest, they represent the best fence value that can be bought anywhere. ^TT This policy gradually turned the tide of business our way again, ^-‘‘"•as we were sure it would. Now we no longer fear competition of any kind. Thus we have a very definite reason for making HOOSIER FENCES better—doing so has brought us success. Our reasons “How” and “In what particulars” HOOSIER FENCES are better are no less definite. You'll find them on the following pages. For cemeteries, churches, schools, parks, etc., Hoosier Fences have never been equaled. Special prices on large orders. I N filling an order for complete fence, it is necessary that we know exactly how it is to be built, that we may send the proper number and kind of posts and fittings. For that reason we require a rough diagram with each order, as per examples given. d Indicate the fence by straight lines and the gates by openings. Give the exact length to each stretch of fence between corner, end or gate posts, as the case may be. It is only necessary to measure from one large post to another, as we do not charge for fencing to fill the gate spaces and for the gates, too, as some manufacturers do. State size of gates wanted, and for drive gates advise whether single or double gates are wanted. CL If fence is to be on a grade, state how much and where grade begins and ends. If fence is to be set on a stone coping or wall, give width, and height of wall, also width and height of gate openings, in case gates are to drop below the wall. CL Be sure all your measurements are correct, as fence will be made ac¬ cording to your diagram. Remember, the wire fabric in a complete fence is six inches lower than the braided top wire, to which we always meas¬ ure when specifying the height of a complete fence. ALWAYS GIVE CATALOG NUMBER OF FENCE WANTED. BEFORE AND AFTER These two photographs tell more eloquently than we can in words, just how much a Hoosier Fence will improve the appearance of any home. It is impossible to have a nice, clean lawn, unless it is protected. A Hoosier Fence not only protects, but also beautifies a lawn. .VL‘ * '/r uAfvs*#. Peerless Fabric fully specified on page 22. Stone or Concrete Wall Fence The above illustration shows our Standard Ideal Fence No. 122, as it appears on a stone wall. In fences intended for stone or concrete walls, w T e omit the reg¬ ular post bases, and either equip the posts with special flanges for attaching to the wall, or cut the posts long enough to go into the wall 10 inches. The flanges are fastened to the wall with bolts which are secured in place with lead or cement. Where flanges are not used, holes are drilled in the wall just a little larger than the posts and the posts are secured by flushing cement around them. The latter is really the easiest way of erecting the fences. Complete specifications of these fences will be found on page 6. Owing to the posts being without bases, the price is somewhat lower than that of our regular fences. Deduct 3 cents per foot from the prices on page 6, and you will have the price of the Standard Ideal Fence for stone wall. In ordering, be careful to state exact distance between ends of walls at the gate, height of wall above the ground, and whether or not gates are to stand on a level with fence at top and bottom. ABOUT OUR NEW FENCES OMETIMES it is desirable to use a closer woven fabric than the HOOSIER line has here¬ tofore contained, so this year we have added some new designs, in both crimped and twisted wire fabrics. The openings in these fences are made as small as 1% inches, which is close enough to prevent even the smallest chicken from creeping through. A detailed de¬ scription of each new fabric is given on page 23. CL The framework for the complete fences using these new fabrics, will be the same as that of our Royal and Peerless fences. Of course, it is not quite so heavy as the frames of our Standard and Heavy fences, yet it makes a most substantial fence—one that we are anxious to have you compare with any fence of a similar price. Cl These new fences are of the same high quality that has always characterized HOOSIER products, and we know they will make friends rapidly. While some parts are a trifle lighter than our higher priced fences, we have in no instance used inferior material to make the lower prices. You will observe that we use 2-inch end and gate posts, 1%-inch line posts, and 1-inch railing. On the large posts you will find a 16-lb. cast gray iron base, and on the line post a 10-lb. base of the same construction. Any manufacturer who tries to persuade you to buy a fence with any¬ thing but gray iron bases is looking out for his own profit, and not for your interests. It would be cheaper for us to use wrought steel bases, or even lighter cast bases, but we intend to make a dependable fence. Read page 30. CL Taken as a whole, these fences are an exceptional bargain and are backed by a Company that has never sold an unsatisfactory fence. See pages 30 and 31. Wire Fabrics fully specified on page 23. Ideal Wire Fabric on Wood Posts This construction makes a neat, substantial and attractive fence, at a very moderate cost. Any of our wire fabrics and gates may be used in the above manner, or without the railing and braided wire; however, if the railing is omitted, the end and gate posts should be braced. Attachments for stretching and fastening the fabric to wood posts will be furnished at a small additional cost, when ordered. Railing and braided wire also furnished at reasonable prices. Specifications and prices of wire fabrics on pages 21, 22 and 23. We do not furnish wood posts. Defiance Wire Fabric on Wood Posts The very close spacing of pickets in our Defiance fabric makes it absolutely chicken proof, consequently it is in great demand for division fences, gardens, etc., where higher-priced fences are not advisable. When it is not necessary to fence against very small chickens, our Champion fabric may be used, at a still lower price. We do not claim that these are as good as our higher-priced fabrics, but they are superior to any crimped wire fabric made and are excellent value for the price. Specifications and prices on page 23; Defiance gates on page 25. We do not furnish the wood posts. SOME FACTS ABOUT HOOSIER WIRE FABRICS N no other part of an ornamental fence is it so easy to skimp and to substitute inferior material and workmanship as in the wire fabrics. Pictures themselves are no proof of quality. Another firm might show in their catalog a fabric looking exactly like our Ideal fabric, for instance, and yet the fabrics themselves be very different, except in general appearance. It is an easy matter to use a half size smaller wire for the pickets and to say nothing whatever about the size of the strand wires; to use Bessemer instead of Basic steel wire; to make the pickets wider; or to omit hammering the fabric as it is being made. All of this would make the fabric cheaper to manufacture, but makes it very expensive for the person who buys it, simply because he is investing his money in an inferior product that cannot last. Cl Hoosier fabrics are made of the very best Basic open hearth steel wire that can be made, and this wire is galvanized extra heavy—in fact it is galvanized twice, so that it will stand exposure to all kinds of weather for years and years without rusting. In our twisted wire fabrics every picket is uniformly twisted and shaped so that the whole fence is perfectly symmetrical. In our crimped wire fabrics special care is taken not to injure the galvanizing, so that it will not rust as quickly as other crimped wire fabrics. No doubt you wonder why we take so much more pains than other manufacturers. Our only reason is that Hoosier Fences have always had the reputation of being the very best made, and we intend they always shall be. Then every owner of Hoosier Fencing will be a “Booster” for Hoosier Fencing, and our business cannot help but grow and grow. Cl Below each illustration of our nine different styles of wire fabrics you will find full specifications regarding size of both pickets and strand wires, details of construction, etc. Nothing is left in¬ definite and you know exactly what you will receive for your money. Cl Remember, every Hoosier product is guaranteed to be exactly as represented and first class in every respect, or your money will be refunded. While this shows a Standard double gate, the Peerless and Defiance gates are practically the same, except in size of frame and style of wire fabric. You will find complete specifications covering these points on opposite page. All double gates are furnished with an anchor and special fittings, so that one half may be made stationary, and the other half be used as a walk gate, when full opening is not required. In all double gates, where each section is 6 feet or over, we place a substantial upright brace in the center, and also use a diagonal brace of %-inch steel, as shown in our single drive gate. Hoosier Gates are made to give satisfaction. The Standard single drive gate, illustrated above, will give you a good idea of the construction of all of our single gates. The Peerless and Defiance single gates are practically the same, except in size of frame and style of wire fabric, l’ou will find full specifications covering these points on opposite page. Careful attention is paid to the bracing of these gates, and they can be relied upon to give perfect satisfaction. All gates over 6 feet are fitted with a substantial upright brace in the center, and the frames are also braced diagonally with a %-inch steel rod that makes sagging impossible. The scrolls of Hoosier Gates are beautiful and symmetrical in design, and con¬ tain more heavy wrought steel than any other gate made. That's another example of Hoosier quality. In every cemetery there is more or less trespassing, though often it is unknown even to the persons most interested. A Hoosier Fence will be a decided improvement for any lot and will in¬ sure the desired privacy, at a very small cost. A fence of this kind is especially desirable in the smaller cemeteries, where the best of care is not — ‘ntained, for it makes the lot exclusive and the owner can give it private care and attention. Any of the various styles of fenc¬ ing illustrated herein are suitable for this purpose, and the selection is only a matter of personal choice. WHY SOME POSTS LAST AND WHY OTHERS DON’T “74--vj EOPLE often wonder why some iron posts will stand for a quarter of a century without any perceptible signs of rusting, when other iron posts rust out in two or three seasons. We can tell you frankly, it is merely a question of using the right kind of material and enough €£j£S>ll of it, for the bases of the posts. After years of experimenting, we decided to use special cast gray iron bases on all of our posts. Although we could make cheaper bases, we much prefer to stand the extra cost and furnish posts that will give perfect satisfaction. Some manufacturers, thinking only of making a sale and as much profit as possible, are using steel and wrought iron bases, because they are lighter and cheaper, even though they know such bases cannot last any length of time. a Cast gray iron, being a natural product of the earth, will not rust in the ground—that explains why Hoosier Fences all over the United States, erected more than twenty years ago, are standing just as solid as the day they were built. The ore is melted into pig iron and from this we cast all of our post bases and tops. There are some light cast bases being made, and some are cast from scrap iron, but they are not Hoosier. The life of a fence depends entirely on the part that holds it up, so it is most important that the bases be of proper size and made of a material that will last. Every Hoosier post has a heavy cast gray iron base (the heaviest made) that cannot be raised or affected in any way by frost, will never rust or corrode, and will last for ages. Ask any¬ one familiar with iron and he will verify our statements. Cl Another feature that makes Hoosier posts last so well is the special collar on the post base—one of the many features that has given Hoosier Fences the reputation of being the very best made. This collar projects about one inch above the surface of the ground and protects the pipe. If the dirt was allowed to touch the pipe, it would hold moisture, and the pipe would rust off just above the base, as many other posts do. Cl We look after the interest of those who buy Hoosier Fences and fully guarantee every Hoosier product.
