Then compare their values. The painted one is worth more — not only because of its better appearance, but also because it is actually in better condition. Its coating of paint has preserved it and protected it from the weather. Where the other house is shabby and run down, the painted house is still sound and fit. The few dollars spent in keeping it painted have been more than offset by the fact that the house has kept up its value. It is cheaper to paint than not to paint. Apply this to your own house or to your barn or other property. As a plain business proposition, you should keep them well and regularly painted. Give them nou) a good coat of paint — and do so before it is too late. Remember a neglected house or barn brings costly repairs which a coat of good paint will prevent. Cents spent now will save you dollars later. And besides, you will be keeping the valu~ of your property and guarding it against decay. Paint to protect your property. Paint regularly and keep the surface in first class condition at all times. It will save you many times over the cost of the paint, besides keeping your house or barn looking fresh, clean, self-respecting. Good Paint is Cheap Insurance Dollar for dollar, the money you spend on paint is a good investment. It should be regarded as insurance — as good sound, practical insurance at a remarkably low rate. By painting regularly you prolong the life of your building and save repair bills. You protect the wood against wind and weather and fortify it against decay. Ordinary insurance protects you in case of fire ioss. Paint insurance prevents the loss from decay. Loss of property by decay is much greater than by fire. Don’t Wait — Delay May Cause Decay Paint now. Every week and every day that the work is postponed means just that much more exposure of your build- ing to the sun, wind and storm that cause decay. Remember the adage, “a stitch in time saves nine.” Order your paint today, taking advantage of our Factory- to-You prices and superior quality — and begin the work of protecting your property and preserving it from decay. Select a Clear, Dry Day for Painting Be sure that the surface to be painted is thoroughly dry and clean from dirt, grease or old blistered paint. If paint is ap- plied on the surface that appears dry but is watersoaked, the paint will peel or blister when the sun beats against it. Don’t attempt to paint when the thermometer registers below 50 degrees. If the surface is too glossy, sandpaper to a flat or dull finish. On a new building be sure to shellac all knots and sappy or pitchy spots before applying the first coat. Stir Thoroughly — Brush Out Well Every kind of paint must he stirred thoroughly both at the time the can is first opened and also while painting. Other- wise the pigments will settle to the bottom of the can. The Paint to Use The right paint must be weather-resisting, a good wood preservative, fine appearing and easy to apply. It must be thoroughly ground and mixed to an even texture which spreads evenly and well. And it must finish with a good color and good surface that will be beautiful as well as durable. All paints from our Paint Factory are guaranteed to possess these qualifications. And moreover, we offer them to you at straight Factory-to- You prices, saving you money on every gallon you buy. Wardway or Coverall Paints are always the paints to use. Use Proper Tools Whether the work to be done is a high class job of decorat- ing or merely one of plain painting, a careful selection of proper tools is necessary if best results are to be obtained. On pages 16 to 20 you will find our complete line of painters’ tools, brushes and materials, which will help you do good work. In the description of each article we state the purpose for which it is intended and it will not be difficult for you to select the right tool or brush for your particular work. Our Paint Service Department will be glad to offer you advice. Choose Colors that Harmonize You wish your house to appear at its best so as to impress everyone favorably. You want your home to be attractive and pleasing and a credit both to you and to your neighborhood. With shades that are attractive and colors that harmonize you can give your house a new, “dressed up” appearance that will be the pride of your family and the envy of your friends. You Can Do a Good Job Yourself Experience is not necessary with Wardway or Coverall Paints. They are ready to apply, spread easily and give a fine, beautiful finish. Outside or inside you can do the work your- self in your spare time, and do a first class job at little cost. ir The Right Way to Buy Your Paint Get the Right Quality at the Right Price There is more to mnking paint than just collect- ing the ingredients and mixing them up. In the old days, before modern factories made pos- sible a thoroughly ground, even-textured paint, the painter used to grind his pigments in a small hand mill and then laboriously mix with oil, and stir, and stir and stir. It would have taken him months, however, to produce a really first class paint such as is produced by the factories of today. And even then, we doubt whether it would have had the same spread, finish and long wear. The Modem Way In these days paints are manufactured in big factories built especially for the purpose. They are equipped with big mixing tanks, heavy grinding mills, and oilier modern machinery, which com- bines to produce' good paint. Paint making has become an industry and a science. Today, practically everybody uses ready- mixed paint. Value of Ready-Mixed Paint Machine-made paint is ground so fine and so thoroughly that it can not be compared to hand- prepared paint. There is n noticeable difference in color and texture and a big difference in the way it finishes off. Another important factor Is its covering capacity — it will go farther and last longer. Experience has proved that ready-mixed paint will withstand exposure longer and better than hand-mixed paint; and Is not only better In every way but actually much cheaper In the long run. First, use good paint — Wardway or Coverall. Second, apply carefully with good brushes. Third, paint regularly. Keeping your house well painted will do more to preserve it in good condition than any other one thing. Applying the First Coat Cut out the entire head of the can. Pour of? oil into another vessel and stir the balance in the can thoroughly, gradually adding the oil until all has been returned. Then pour it back and forth from one can into the other until it is thoroughly mixed. And stir from time to time while using. When painting new surfaces it is well to mix from a pint to a quart of pure raw linseed oil to the gallon of paint. Be careful to use only PURE linseed oil or it will spoil the job. We sell the right quality. Ask for our prices when ordering. Applying the Second Coat Let the first coat harden from seven to ten days before ap- plying the second coat. In the meantime go over the surface carefully and putty up all crevices and sunken nail heads. For the second coat, use the paint just as it comes from the can. But be sure to stir it thoroughly and mix it as per our instructions. In case it is found too thick, add a little pure linseed oil to bring it to the right consistency. Brush out well as in the first coat, stirring now and then. A Third Coat is usually unnecessary when you use Wardway or Coverall House Paints. They are so well made, mixed and ground that they have an exceptional spreading and covering capacity. But on all new work and occasionally on a very old surface, a third coat of paint is necessary for a good job. Your Barn and Fences {For Prices, etc., seepage 7) The same general instructions apply to painting your barn and fence. Select a dry day, stir the paint thoroughly dnd apply two coats, brushing out well. And use Coverall. We do not make an inferior barn paint and cannot advise you too strongly against trying one. You save time and money and get better results using Coverall, which is made and mixed in our own factory and guaranteed to give satis- faction. Use Coverall also for all out-buildings, sheds, etc. Our Heavy Roof and Fence Paint (page 9) is an elastic waterproof paint for any and all metal or wood surfaces. Superior Shingle Stain ( For Prices, etc., see page 8) Shingle Stain is not only a stain to beautify but also an ex- cellent wood preservative, as it penetrates the wood. On new work, dip the shingles two-thirds of their length. On a roof already shingled, spread the stain freely so it will penetrate under the laps. Stir the stain continually. Creosote Wood Preservative (For Prices, etc., see page 11) Recommended by state experimental stations, railroads and steamship companies for preserving fence posts, silos, joists, tanks, in fact, any wood subject to decay or ravages of insects. Prolongs the life of the wood and protects it against disease germs, and such insects as lice, mites, rats and ants. Dip fence posts to ground line in tanks filled with Wood Preservative, or may be applied with brush like paint. Ropes, canvas and nets so treated become waterproof, yet remain soft and pliable. The Best Protection for Your Roof {For Prices of Roof Coatings, etc., seepages 12 and 13) Elastic Rubber Roof Paint One of the most important things to watch in either constructing a house or keeping it in good repair is the roof. It must be kept in good condition at all times and under all weather conditions. Our roof coatings, briefly described below, offer the best pro- tection for your roof. They are reliable, well tested and now in use by many of our customers. Liquid Roof Cement Ready to use. Apply with a brush. Only one coat required, even on the oldest surface. A semi-plastic material to be applied with a heavy brush direct to the surface of the roof to the thickness of about 1-16 Inch. Makes the oldest roof waterproof. Trowel Roof Cement An elastic, plastic compound to be applied with an ordinary mason’s or plasterer’s trowel to the thickness of % to % inch. With a small leak, plug up the hole same as with putty, smoothing edges. Elastic Cement An asbestos cement that stops all leaks. Applied with a putty knife or trowel. For repairing roofs, gutters, chimney joints, sky-lights, etc. Will last as long as surface on which it Is applied. ODOE= A special elastic paint for all kinds of roofs. Ready to apply, does not need to be thinned. Thoroughly scrape or sweep the surface to be painted and apply Elastic Rubber Roof Faint with a rooting brush or any ordinary heavy wall brush. Asphalt Roof Coating To be applied with a brush same as above. Comes in three oolors — black, red and green — and is excellent for composition or felt roofs, shingle roofs or metal roofs. Elastic, durable and handsome. Liquid Coal Tar Ready to use. May be applied with any heavy brush. When using over tur roofing or any prepared roofing, best results are obtained if coal tar is heated. A yearly application lengthens life of roof. Roofing Pitch Our old style Roofing Pitch is the kind generally used on gravel roofs. Also for tarred felt roofs and for waterproofing foundations below ground. Must be melted and applied hot. Spread out with long handle roofing brush. Furnished in barrels only. To Figure Amount of Paint Needed ion D Figure how many square feet of surface are to be covered, and then divide that number by the number of square teet one gallon of paint will cover. That will give you the total number of gallons needed. For example, take a house 30 ft. x 40 ft., 20 ft. high. Add 4 sides together: Front 30 ft. Ono side 40 ft. Other side % 40ft. Rear 30 ft Total 140 ft Multiply by height x20 Gives surface to be covered 2800 sq. ft. Divide this number by 250 (average number of square feet one gallon will cover, two coats) and you obtain 11 Vs- Allowing a little extra to be sure you have enough, you need 12 gallons of paint. This will vary according to the condition of the wood. If it has been painted once or surface is smooth and hard a lesser quantity will do. On lumber which has never been painted before, a slightly greater amount will be needed. Allow *4 to 1-5 for trimming. If a roof is to be painted, keep measurements separate. If one side of the roof measures lo ft. x 30 ft., multiply 15 x 30, which makes 450 sq. ft. for one side of the roof. Multiply by 2 and divide by number of square feet each gallon of roof paint will cover. Paint to Protect Your Property — Buy from our Paint Factory and Save Money 3 These Instructions Make It Simple How to Do Interior Painting With “Coverall” or “Wardway” For Prices , etc., see Pages 7 and 8 We particularly recommend Coverall and Wardway I'aints for interior work. In fact, such colors as No. 10 Inside Gloss White; No. 10% Inside Flat White; No. 49 Pink; No. 59 Sky Blue; No. 50 Ocean Blue and No. 52 Deep Blue are made especially for this purpose. In the first place, see that surface to be painted is thoroughly clean and dry. If it is woodwork to be painted, go over the sur- face carefully and stop up all holes and cracks with “Fill-Tite” (page 17). On plastered walls, treat with “Fill-Tite” as above. Plastered walls which have not been pre- viously painted must first be sized (see page 22 for Fresco Wall Size). If kalsomined or whitewashed, first remove the coating by washing and scraping. Both Coverall and Wardway House Paints are excellently adapted for use on walls, (wood or plaster) ceilings, woodwork, cupboards, etc. It is very easy to apply — see general instructions on page 2. Directions for Applying Inside Floor Paint For Price a, etc., see Page 20 See that surface is clean and free from grease and oil. Turn to page 21 for our low prices. How to Apply Flat Wall Finish Sanitary — W ashable For Pricet, etc., tee Page 26 Flat Wall Finish is especially intended and recommended for use on walls, plaster board, metal ceilings, or canvas — in fact, anywhere that a smooth velvety, no-gloss finish is desired. If the wall has been kalsomined it Is necessary first to wash off with a sponge and warm water. Then use our Fresco Wall Size, (page 23) before putting on the first coat of paint. If the wall has previously been painted, it will not be necessary to use the size. Apply paint in usual way with a wall brush. Flnt Wall Finish is very popular for use in kitchens and bathrooms where its wash- able finish makes sanitary conditions easy. It may be washed repeatedly without Injury and without losing either its beautiful color or fine finish. Flat Wall Finish is also used extensively as an undercoat for Liquid Enamel Paints. It gives a smooth surface and excellent base over which to apply the lighter tints of Liquid Enamels. How to Use Liquid Enamels For Prices, etc., see Page 26 Liquid Enamel Paints are unsurpassed for interior finish. They may be used on wood or metal. Just the thing for metal ceilings, kitchen walls, bathrooms, cupboards, furniture, etc. On wood or metal surface which has never been painted, first apply Towerlite White Undercoat or Inside Flat White Wardway cr Coverall House Paint. In the case of plastered walls which have not been already painted, first size with Fresco Wall Size (page 23). If walls have been papered, first remove paper by thorough soaking and scraping with putty knife or similar tool. Always be sure that surface is perfectly smooth before applying tho paint. One coat of Liquid Enamel is usually enough on sur- faces that have been previously painted unless the color is pery different. Directions for Applying Ward way Kalsomine For Prices, etc., see Page 26 If walls have never been painted, kalsomined or sized, stop up all holes and cracks with "Fill-Tite’' (see page 17) and apply a coat of Fresco Wall Size (see page 23) al- lowing it to dry thoroughly. If walls are kalsomined. the old kalsomine must be washed off with sponge and hot water before attempting to apply the new. It is pos- sible to kalsomine over old wall paper but it is better in all cases to remove it. This is easily accomplished by soaking with hot water and subsequently scraping off tho paper with a painter’s scraper or ordinary case-knife. Wardway Kalsomine should then be mixed to the con- sistency of rich cream and applied in long sweeping strokes. Do not allow edges of work to become dry or laps will ahow. Fresco Colors for Trimming Our beautiful Fresco Colors (see page 26) are used with kalsomine shades for borders and stencils. Also used for producing panel effects below tho plate rails in dining rooms. Apply like kalsomine. How to Use Stencils Apply with stencil brush and clean the back of the itcncll frequently to insure clear lines to the pattern. On kalsomined walls, use Fresco Colors. On Flat Wall Finish, etc., use some of tho same paint in lighter or darker shade to suit your taste. See page 23 for as- sortment of stencils. How to Do Graining For Graining' Colors and Tools, see Page 23 First stop up all holes and Imperfections with putty and then smooth off the entire surface with fine sandpaper. Apply a coat of Co- Var-Finlsh Ground Color (see page 25) which will give a flnt color upon which to apply tho Graining Comi>ound. Apply Graining ComjH>und to a small part of the surface at one time as it dries quickly. Draw the Graining Roller along through the coated surface, varying the motion slightly each time in order to produce a variety of grains on different parts of the work. When dry apply Co- Var- Finish of the desired shade. At first, care should be taken to flow tho varnish on very gently with minimum strokes. How to Refinish Your Auto or Carriage For Prices, etc., see Page 22 Thoroughly wash and rinse the surface to be re- finished. Polish oft all rough places w r ith steel wool. Wipe thoroughly clean with cotton waste. Shake can vigorously before opening, cut out entire top and stir paint well. Apply paint not too thickly, just freely and evenly with clean varnish brushes, numbers 75W614 and 75W618 (see page 17), using larger brush on broad surface. At once take up fitch flowing brush number 75W669 (page 17) but do not dip in paint, use simply to go over painted surface and take up the surplus paint, which should be scraped off into the can of paint. The paint as it comes in the can is in the proper consistency for average use. but if thinning is neces- sary use a very small quantity of turpentine only — too much will spoil the gloss. One coat of paint is usually enough but if a second coat is needed, allow plenty of time between coats. Badly worn places should be touched up first. A final coat of Auto and Carriage Varnish will add to the life of the finish. Wagon and Implement Paint For Pricet, etc., see Page 22 When your implements are brought in from the field, inspect them very carefully and note all re- pairs needed on a tag and tie it on the implement. Carefully clean and oil all bearings and look over wooden parts. If the paint Is becoming worn, put on a new coat to prevent the wood from shrinking or swelling. This is very important and will often save you the cost of a new implement. The same applies to your wagons and other vehicles. Our AVagon and Implement Taint pro- tects against weather wear and hard usage. When and How to Use Wardway Rust Preventive For Pricet etc., see Page 22 No farming implement or tool should be put away without a treatment of AVardway Rust Pre- ventive. Applied with an ordinary paint brush or cloth, produces a coating over the unpainted iron and wearing parts and protects against rust. May be quickly cleaned off with a cloth moistened with kerosene oil. Lengthens life of tools. 4 Paint to Protect Your Property — Buy from our Paint Factory and Save Money ♦ ♦♦ < Do It the and Save Money How to Use Co-Var-Finish (Colored Varnish Finish) For Prices, tic., see Page 25 Co-Var-Finish makes any wood any color desired. Colors and varnishes at one ap- plication. For New Floors or Woodwork Open grained woods like oak or ash should first he filled with our I'aste 1-iller (see page 18). Allow filler 24 hours to dry, then apply two coats of any “Co-V ar- Finish,” except Ground Color, taking care that first coat is dry and hard before apply- ing second, allowing at least 48 hours be- tween coats. Close grained woods like maple, cherry and birch require no filler. For Old Floors or Woodwork If in fairly good condition touch up bare spots and proceed as on new work. If in bad condition, or discolored, or if you wish to apply a lighter color over a darker one, first apply a coat of “Co-Var-Finish,” Ground Color, then after graining, apply the desired color as it comes in the can. Lightly sandpaper first coat after allowing 48 hours to dry, then apply second coat. For Refinishing Furniture See that surface is dry and clean and sandpaper all rough spots. If some places are badly worn touch up those first, then give whole surface one coat of “Co-Var-Finish” thinned with one-half pint of turpentine to the gallon. Allow 48 hours to dry and apply second coat as it comes from the can. If you wish to cover a dark surface with lighter color, first apply a coat of “Co-Var-Finish,” Ground Color. Grain with graining compound and tools to produce effect of new wood and pro- ceed as above with color desired. Directions for Applying Mission Art Finish For Prices, etc., see Page 19 For New Work Threo Finishes are Possible with Mission Art Finishes. Stained Finish — Dull. Have wood surface thoroughly clean and sandpaper smoothly. Apply one coat of the Mission Art Finish evenly and freely with ordinary varnish brush or with cheesecloth. After a few seconds or before the stain lias set. wipe the surface off smooth with a soft cloth. The effect will be light or dark accord- ing to the length of time it is left on. Wax Finish. Apply as above. Allow to stand from 5 to 6 hours or until the stain is entirely dry. Then apply Montgomery Ward & Co.'s Floor Wax and rub to a polish with a dry flannel cloth. If a smooth Wax Finish Is desired, apply one thin coat of pure White or Orange Shellac before waxing. When thoroughly dry. rub lightly with thin sandpaper, dust off carefully and apply the wax. Varnish Finish. On open grained woods, stain as above. Follow with Hardwood Paste Filler using light or dark filler according to shade of the stain used. (The color of tho filler can be changed if desired by mixing In a little of the Mission Art Finish.) Allow 3 6 hours to dry. then apply one thin coat of Shellac, sandpaper lightly and fin- ish with one or twd coats of Mirolite varnish. In finishing floors omit the coat of Shellac, also use our Marproof Floor Varnish instead of interior varnish. The last coat may be rubbed and polished if desired. For close grained woods, follow directions given for Open Grained Woods except omit Hardwood Paste Filler. For Old Work Remove all old finish with Paint and Varnish Remover. Clean the woodwork thoroughly with benzine, sandpaper and then proceed as outlined for new work. How to Care for Brushes First clean out brush thoroughly with benzine. Procure a small amount of ordinary vaseline — say a Uiblespoon- ful — and rub thoroughly into bristles of brush, working it in. When ready to use again, wash out in benzine. Never use a stubby, worn-out brush. It is cheaper to buy a new one. See page 19. How to Apply How to UseVarnish For Prices, etc., see Page 22 Select a dry day for varnishing. The surface must be free from dust and dampness. Room should be w T ell lighted and ventilated (but no drafts) and temperature ibout 7 0 degrees. If varnish becomes chilled by exposure, set can in warm water. If varnish thickens after opening, thin cautiously with pure turpentine only. Varnish should not be brushed out like paint, but should be laid on freely, and evened off with as few strokes as possible. Use a full brush, rubbing it out crosswise, if possible. Finish by laying it off up and down the grain. Use a clean brush, if new, so much the better. We recommend Brush 7 5W618 (see page 19) or Brush 7 5W655 if a less expensive one is desired. To Varnish New Floors All open grained w’oods, such as oak, ash. w’alnut, etc., must first be filled with hardwood paste filler (see page 16). Use our No. 7 5WS210, listed under Hardwood Paste Filler, page 16. Allow about 2 4 hours for the filler to dry’; then sandpaper with No. 1 sandpaper, and dust thoroughly. Apply at least two coats of varnish, and allow two days between coats for drying. Before applying the last coat, the surface should be rubbed lightly with steel w r ool or sandpaper, to kill the gloss and allow the last coat to "take hold" better. To Varnish Old Floors Revarnishing an old floor should not be done, unless the varnish is in good condition. If floor is in good condition, fill all cracks and crevices with Crack and Crevice Filler (page 17). Sandpaper the surface smoothly, clean thoroughly, then proceed with the varnish. If floor is not in good condition, the old varnish should he removed with Paint and Varnish Remover, (page 17). Then clean the surface thoroughly with a cloth and benzine; sandpaper well, and refinish as in new w r ork. Do not varnish over wax. Every particle of wax should be removed by using steel wool and turpentine. To Remove Old Paint or Varnish On woodwork and furniture where the old finish is In very bad condition It is best to remove the old paint or vami9h to get a smooth surface, and thus obtain a good job of refinishing. Apply our Paint and Varnish Remover (page 17) freely with a glue-set brush. After allowing it to stand for about five minutes remove the softened old coating with a dull knife or painter’s scraper. Use a wire brush for carvings or moldings. For very old or many-roated work, apply a second coat of the Remover and treat in the same way. Then clean the surface with a rag or piece of w’aste dipped in the Remover or benzine. To Varnish Close Grained Woods Pine, maple, etc., require no filler of any kind. Simply apply three coats of varnish direct to the wood. Thin the first coat with a little turpentine, using half pint to pint of turpentine to one gallon of varnish. Follow with second <-'>31. and after allowing plenty of time for drying (in most cases two day’s), sandpaper lightly, and apply last or finishing coat just as the varnish comes in the can. Brash on! evenly. Hard and open grain woods, such as oak. ash. walnut, etc., should first be filled with hardwood paste filler. How to Do a Rubbed Finish When the last coat of varnish is thoroughly dry and hard, rub down with a nibbing felt and fine pumice stone. Dip the nibbing felt lightly in water, or raw linseed oil. and then in the pumice stone and nib the surface up and down with the grain of the wood. A smoother, dull -rubbed finish can be obtained by using our Rubbing Oil (page 17). You can save time by using our Rubbed Finish Varnish (page 24). Towerlite Enamel (Gloss White Finish) For Prices, etc., see Page 25 For woodwork, furniture, plastered walls or metal surfaces. Hard white gloss that may be rubbed dull. For New Woodwork and Furniture The surface to be finished must be clean, dry and sandpapered smoothly. All cracks or imperfections should be filled with putty or paste filler and all knots should be coated with white shellac. Apply two coats Tow- erlite Undercoat, allowing at least 24 hours between coats for drying. This will give you an even, solid and perfectly white foundation to work on. After the second coat is thoroughly dry, sandpaper lightly with 00 sandpaper, after which you are ready for the Towerlite finish. Use a fine bristle, full body varnish brush for this work. In ap- plying the first coat of Towerlite, brush out carefully, well and evenly. Allow at least 48 hours for drying. Sandpaper lightly with 00 sandpaper, then apply the second coat, which should be flowed on and worked out freely and evenly. For New Plastered Walls Walls must be hard and dry before they are finished. All cracks and holes should be filled with Plaster Paris. Apply one coat of our Fresco Wall Size. This should be applied thinly, evenly and well brushed in. After allow- ing 2 4 hours to dry, finish as above specified for new woodwork except one coat of the Undercoat will suffice in most cases. For Old Work The surface to be enameled should be dry, clean, free from grease and dirt, and sandpapered smoothly . If the old paint is in poor condition, cracking or peeling, it should be removed. After the surface to be enameled is in proper condition, proceed as above outlined on new work. The number of coats to be applied will depend entirely upon the condition of the surface. When refinish- ing an old surface previously finished in white or some light shade, one coat of Towerlite Undercoat and two coats of Towerlite will usually suffice. Directions for Applying Radiator Enamel For Prices, etc., see Page 19 Stir enamel thoroughly and apply with an ordinary flat bristle varnish brush. If it thickens, add a little turpen- tine carefully — too much will kill the luster. Be sure to remove all oil or grease from the surface of the radiator before applying or enamel will peel off. Washing with benzine is best for this purpose. Be sure radiator is cold and do not flow enamel on too heavily. Two thin coats are far better than one thick coat. One gallon will cover about 250 sq. ft. of surface. Directions for Applying Bathtub Enamel For Prices, etc., see Page 19 Stir tho enamel thoroughly. Have the surface to be coated clean, smooth. Dry, and free from dust. Apply ovenly and freely — brushing out very thoroughly. Use an Oval Varnish Brush if possible. One coat will usually bo sufficient. If a higher finish is desired apply two coats, allowing first coat to dry hard before applying the second coat. Tills will insure a high finish and will give the tub a very attractive appearance. This enamel will wear like iron. For First Coat Work add at least 10 per cent of turpentine to the Enamel. If too heavy, thin only with turpentine. Directions for Applying Gold and Aluminum Enamels For Prices, etc., see Page 19 Particular care must be taken with gold paint and aluminum enamel as they are used on such delicate work as picture frames, statuettes, etc., which plainly show every defect. Be sure that surface is perfectly clean and free from dust and grease and is dry before starting to paint. Apply with a flat brush. Stir mixture thoroughly and do not lay on too thick a coat. Of course you want it painted or heavily galvanized wire, so it will last for years, but how about the posts? No fence can be better than the posts that support it. When the posts decay and break off, the service of the fence is gone, at least until new posts are set, and the fence rebuilt. All this means added expense. Consider, too, the possible losses that may occur by stock breaking through into the grain field, or straying away and the con- sequent loss in time and labor in getting them back. Use WOOD PRESERVATIVE on your fence posts; it will preserve them for many years against decay. The cost is small, and. the saving is much. Fence posts are increasing in value, as timber becomes more. scarce. The cost for Wood Preservative is only from 3 cents to 5 cents per post.. It doubles the life of posts and in the saving of labor alone you will be well repaid. Stops Destructive Growths Decay of fence posts and telegraph poles, you may have noticed, is often more rapid near the surface of the ground. This is due to insect life or fungus growth that eats into the wood and thus opens it up for more rapid decay. Insects and fungi (such as moss) will not work upon or attach themselves to wood that has been treated with Wood Preservative. Wood Preservative THF- QLDEST ;^ BEST KNOWN Used also for preserving Silos, Planking Sills, Joists, Tanks— in fact any wood subject to decay or the ravages of insects Protect Your Chickens Against Lice, Mites and Disease As Wood Preservative is a strong but harmless disinfectant, it is used, with great. success, for spraying poultry build ings, inside and outside. This oil is fatal to both lice and mites. The use of Wood Preservative will free your buildings of these insects, which sap the life out of your poultry. This oil likewise is a great preventative against contagious diseases. Rid the hens of lice, — they will be more healthy and profitable. A Refined Creosote Oil Approved as Best Wood Preservative is nothing more or less than Refined Creosote Oil. This oil has been an acknowledged wood pre- servative from time unknown. The fact that railroads and steamship companies always have and still use it, to preserve and protect against decay, such property as ties, water tanks, bridges, trestles, wharfs, docks, boats and barges, is evi- dence conclusive of its unquestioned merit. Notwithstanding the many adver- tised, fancy-named preservatives now be- ing placed before the public, Creosote Oil still maintains its superiority. There is no other oil, or combination of oils that will penetrate and impart to the wood, that lasting, preserving quality as will this oil. A Disinfectant for Hog Pens The disinfecting qualities of Wood Preservative make it ideal for spraying hog pens and barns as well as poultry houses. As Wood Preservative is the enemy of disease germs, and such insects as lice and mites, it is likewise an enemy to the corn weevil. Mice, rats or ants will not attack or damage woodwork painted with Wood Preservative. Ropes, canvas and nets treated with wood preservative become water-proof, and more durable, yet re- main soft and .pliable in all seasons.
