We Manufacture nothing but Grates. MONARCH AND BUCKEYE PORTABLE OR SET GRATES. The continued use for over thirteen years of the Double Draft Portable Grates, or Fireplaces, has proven that they are the most kconomical, practical and satisfactory Hreplaces made. They have the advantage over the regular common brick setting in that they are— A complete Grate all mounted ready for setting. They require no fire brick or fire tile in selting. riiey can be set by any mason. They overcome imperfect chimneys. They prevent smoky chimneys and puffing of smoke into the room. The dampers can be so operated as to control the fire. By opening the lower damper which is directly over and close to the fire, it forms a strong direct draft, which as soon as it heats the flue, forms a rapid current of air, thus carrying off the dense smoke. When the fire is well under waj' the lower damper can be closed, the upper one remaining open. The heat is then reflected into the room. The upper damper in all grates is operated with a malleable iron thumb-screw. This damper can be closed tight when grate is not in use, preventing dust or soot from entering the room. Has a loose cross piece between the upper and lower dampers, which prevents it from cracking or w’arping, and can be easily replaced. This piece can be removed in setting the grate, so as to leave the top free and open, and permit of easily wiring the gra-te back and plastering up the hood. This is a feature which is contained in no other grates. Some of these grates are so arranged that they can be operated same as a stove and fire can be kept for an indefinite period. They are also provided with shaking bottoms. They are all brick lined, or irdn backed, with air chambers at the side, and require tile only at the rear of the fire. Each kind is fully described in this book. THE IMPROVED MONARCH GRATE. Ranks first among Portable Grates or Fireplaces. The leailing feature of this grate wherein it excels all others is— Its curved corrugated top which reflects the heat into the room. Improved method of operating upper damper (with thumb-screw) which permits it to be opened any desired width without danger of dropping. Damper attachments are of malleable Iron. Extra heavv grate bars. Back Ijar and trunions are protected under back, preventing same from warping or being clogged with cinders. , It has double basket with extra wide space between them, which allows the ashes to fall behind the screen. The above improvements are not found in any other grate made. It also has— Damper in both basket front and ash screen whereby fire can be kept under control an indefinite period, same as a stove. Fire pot is full lined with fire tile to a height that will protect back from live coals. The tile can be renewed without removing the grate. The sh.vker head is of maei.eable iron. The grate bottom, besides freeing itself of ashes when being operated, opens up the fire and does not jar the grate from position. All parts are extra heavy and so constructed as not to be easily burned or warped, and can be readily renewed if necessary. Hoods of all Monarch frames are double, or lined, so as to preserve the plating. No. I. Crosspiece, loose. 3. Upper Damper. 4. Lower or Direct Damper. 6. Ash space between Baskets. 8. The back is made of heavy sheet steel, rouble reflector top, with corrugations in the back, which permits the air to pass from the base up around and through the open¬ ings and the log, and besides assisting combustion, becomes heated and passes into the room, greatly adding to the quality of the grate. This feature is in no other grate made. Ve guarantee the logs to be the best made, and so constructed as to give a flame on the entire face of the log, with perfect combustion and giving intense heat. As these grates are intended for service as well as appearance, we construct them with different size logs to suit the service required of them: the larger the log the greater the heat. All numbers except 972 and 979 are extra heavy plated with solid brass reflecting sides and base, and solid brass standard, and rail, and we guarantee the construction, workmanship and burning qualities of the log. All numbers except 972 and 979 can be made in any desired finish, without extra charge. Nos. 972 and 9/9, while they take the same log as the other grates, are not as heavily plated, have plated copper reflecting sides, plated iron standards and rail, have corrugations in back, but constructed different from the other numbers.' While the construction is different, the heating quality of the grate is the same. GAS GRATES. Patented January 6, 1903. All Gas Grates have the improved multiple burners, so constructed that each burner throws its flame over the entire face of the grate; can be turned down very low, and everr burner remain burning; perfect combustion, no escaping gas, can be lighted instantly after gas is turned,on and will not ignite in the mixer, and we guarantee Our Multiple Burner Grates to be the best Gas Grates made and to icork satisfactorily. They are recommended to be used where continuous fires are not required, or in connection with furnace heat. When prop¬ erly used, they are the most economical grate in use. They are always ready and can be immediately extinguished when not wanted. No labor, ashes or dirt. Grates are 2>'/z inches deep. Summer Pieces are included with all grates except No. 940 unless otherwise ordered. Eight row burners are recommended for extra service. We do not use dampers in our best design of grates as they are of no value, and mar the appearance of some designs. Always specify whether for natural or manufactured gas. Made in any desired plating or black finish, but recommend Oxidized Copper or Brass plating as the best plating for gas. 24 SECTIONAL VIEW. The Multiple Burner Gas Grate showing separate gas chamber (No. 2) for each row of burners; the lower chambers being larger than the upper one form a reservoir to feed them when grate is turned low. These chambers are fed from a canal at each end extending up from lower reser¬ voir. The back of gas chamber is of cast iron and will not rust out from moisture in chimney. Rear view of grates, showing corrugations in back, which permits the air to pass from base up around and through openings in log. 25 « No. 976 . inches wide. 305^ inches high. 16, 18 or 20 inch Log Extra plated. In all Gas Grates made to-day, over half of the heat produced hy the gas is lost through the metal back of the grate, going up the flue through the space in the rear. The “Odorless Grate” is so constructed that there is neither any odor or waste of heat, the heat all passing into the room by two methods, having a curved face plate (Fig. 3} with air draft in front of burner (Fig. 9) passing the air to the flame it makes a quick circulation. Second, in the rear of the face plate (Fig. 3) is an air chamber (Fig. 4) the back of which is lined with asbestos board, inch thick (Fig. 2) curved to the top, thereby retaining all heat formerly lost through the back of the grate. The circulation of cold air from the floor in¬ creases in velocity according to the heat of the face plate, sufficient to carry all the heat radiated through the face place, back into the room through register (Fig. 7) beneath the hood. Burner has adjustable valve so as to regulate flow of gas to suit all pressures. Beneath burner is a water pan. The evaporation from same unites with the air both in front of flame and through the chamber, reducing the dryness of the heatetl atmosphere. The Crown Piece is removable (Fig. 8) so as to admit of free access to water pan. AVe recommend this grate where it is not possible to have a flue, but where a flue is obtainable we still advise the use of either the five or eight row multiple burner grate.
