CLEVELAND, OHIO. 13 GARRY PATENT CAP STEEL ROOFING GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Fig. 226. MOST COMPLETE STANDING SEAM ROOFING NOW ON THE MARKET ROLLS FIFTY FEET LONG, TWENTY-SIX INCHES WIDE This roofing is particularly adapted to flat roofs, having one inch or more fall to the foot, and can be put onto roofs with less fall, by packing the seams with our Garry Roofing Cement. The roofing lays 24 inches wide, after making the necessary allowance for seams, and is put up in rolls 50 feet long, containing 100 square feet, or if so de¬ sired, it will be put up in lengths to fit the roof. This material can be put up to fit the roof, if the exact measurements are given. For gable roofs, give the distance from the eave to the ridge on each side of the roof, and material can be prepared in lengths that will reach from one eave to the other without a seam at the ridge. For roofs shedding one way, give the exact distance from the upper to the lower edge of the roof, and if it leans against another building, mention it, so the proper allow¬ ance can be made for flashing. In ordering special lengths, it is always best to send diagram of roof with order. The roofing is fastened to the building by a cleat, which is nailed to the roof boards and is bent over the standing edge of each side of the sheet. A cap is put over the seam and held in place by rivets. The roofing is so constructed that no nail holes are exposed to the weather, and thus leak¬ age is almost impossible. 14 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. ROLL AND CAP STEEL ROOFING WITH OUTSIDE CLEATS Fig. 228. GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Is put up in rolls 50 feet long and 26 inches wide. This roofing lays 24 inches wide, after making necessary allowance for seams. With this roofing our long galvanized formed side cleat will always be furnished, and with this style of roofing, tongs or squeezers are the only tools re¬ quired. Directions for applying Roll and Cap Roofing with outside cleat, are the same as for Garry Cap Roofing with protected cleats, except the cl eating and capping, which is clearly illustrated above, no rivets or burrs being used. CLEVELAND, OHIO. 15 DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING GARRY CAP ROOFING Unroll the strips, take our tongs and turn the flange on the inside one inch high. Push it to place, allowing one inch to bend over the end of the roof, and nail the same to the roof or up against the parapet wall six inches (whichever the case may be) ; then nail the cleats along the flange about 15 inches apart, and bend one-half of the cleat over the flange. Take another strip, turn up both sides of it, place close to the first strip and turn the other half of cleat over the flange; then cleat again along the outside flange, the same as the first strip. Continue this process until the iron is all laid. If the roof is gable, shedding two ways, have the strips put up to shed both ways. Let the strips run over the roof from eave to eave, and cut in one inch on each side of strip on the center, before turning up. After the strips are laid, take the caps and place them over the flanged seam, lapping the ends about one inch. Take the tongs and squeeze the caps and flanges up close and smooth; then take our lever punch and punch the holes for the rivets about 15 inches apart; placing the rivets through the holes, using the washer on the end of the same, and for fastening use a rivet set. Fora hip roof, flange the iron upon the hip, cap and rivet the same as side seam. For a valley, put in a tin, galvanized iron or steel valley, 24 inches wide, turn a one-half inch lock on each side of the valley, cleat the same down and lock the roofing sheet to the valley. Put in some thick paint, and mallet down close. When the roof¬ ing is turned up against a parapet wall, put in counter flashing or apron. The tools required in laying the Garry Cap Roofing are the one-inch Garry Tongs and the Garry Patent Lever Punch. Our eyelet punch can be used in place of the Garry Punch, if desired, and by so doing, the use of the rivets and burrs is dispensed with. The Garry Punch and Tongs will be sent, unless otherwise specified. FOR LAYING ROOFING ONTO FLAT ROOFS We desire to call our agents’ and patrons’ attention to our p]an of putting the Cap Roofing on buildings where the pitch or fall of roof is less than one inch to the foot. Lay the iron, and before putting on the caps, throw apart or open the standing seam and fill or pack it with Garry’s Roofing Cement; then put the cap on, press or mallet it close together before riveting— by this process the cap is thoroughly filled with cement; then rivet the cap on; or use the eyelet fastener, putting the rivets or eyelet fastener every eight or ten inches apart. This makes the roof perfectly secure against leakage, when snow, ice or water stands upon it. Whenever there is an inch or more fall to the foot, this is not necessary. One ply of rosin or waterproof felt should be laid under the iron, where gas or steam are used in the building, or where there is heat next to the roof to cause dripping or sweating from condensation in cold weather. i6 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO, STOCK OF ROLL ROOFING ALWAYS ON HAND DOUBLE SEAMING STEEL FOR ROOFING GALVANIZED OR PAINTED IN ROLLS 50 FEET LONG The Double Seaming Steel is put up in rolls 50 feet long, containing 100 square feet after the allowance is made for seaming. With this roofing no caps or fastenings of any kind are used, except the cleat, which is nailed to the roof about every fifteen inches apart, and turned over the lower edge of the sheet. If requested, in ordering, we will make special rolls of any length less than one hundred and fifty feet. The sheets are all squared, which assures a perfect lock, and are painted by machinery, which leaves a more even and better body of paint than could be obtained in any other way. The paint used is the best quality of iron ore, ground in pure linseed oil. Graphite paint will be used, if specified. We also furnish tin for double seaming. In ordering Double Seeming Steel, we would advise our patrons to always state the size of cleat desired. We will always send a cleat If inches high, unless otherwise ordered. DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING Turn the sheets up If inch on one side, and If inch on the other with tinners’ tongs, and with the double seaming tool, the seam is formed. This is adapted to all kinds of roofs with one inch or more fall to the foot, and will make a tight and perfect roof. CLEVELAND, OHIO. 17 GARRY SELF-CAP ROOFING IN ROLLS WITH EYELET FASTENER Fig. 230. GALVANIZED OR PAINTED IN ROLLS FIFTY FEET LONG Our Self-Cap Roofing, when put up in rolls 50 feet long, will lay just one square. We will also put it up in special lengths, if so desired. It is particularly adapted to roof with very little pitch, and can be used with as little as one inch fall to the foot. This eyelet fastening is far superior to any other of similar kind now in the market, as it not only cuts the material in the ridge and carries it through the opening, turning it down to the outer side of ridge, but it forms it closely on all sides of the opening, thus preventing any possible chance for leakage. The tools required in laying the Self-Cap Roofing, in rolls, are the 1-inch and the lf-inch Tongs, for turning up the edges, and the 1-inch Seamer, which turns the lf-inch edge over the one on the other sheet, which stands one inch high ; the eyelet punch, which is used in forming the eyelet fastening, is also sent. DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING In laying this roofing, when shipped in rolls, follow the directions for laying Garry Cap Roof¬ ing (page 15), excepting that the sheet is turned up 1 inch on one side and If on the other, and the cleat is turned over the lower edge. Then the edge of the sheet, If inches high, is turned over the lower edge, and the eyelet is formed, which completes the roof. iS THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. PRESSED STANDING SEAM ROOFING WITH END LOCKS FORMED Fig. 231. GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Pressed Standing Seam Roofing is furnished in sheets with plain ends, in stock lengths of 6, ?, 8, 9 and 10 feet. DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING Our long formed side cleats are used in laying this roofing, and are nailed close to the hooking side of the sheet, and bent down over it, thus holding the sheet in place, are fastened by hooking the end cleats over the lock at the upper nailing them to the roof. The next sheet is then laid by end of the sheet into anchored lock of the sheet below, and by lapping onto the side of the sheet adjoining it: the side is then bent back over the top of this seam. Press the standing seam with tongs or squeezers, and mallet down the end locks. We will furnish this with end locks formed, at 10 cents per square extra. The ends of the sheets end of the sheet, and the lock at the lower SHOWING CHIMNEY WITH FLASHING Fig. 232. CLEVELAND, OHIO 19 ONE-QUARTER INCH CRIMPED SHEETS GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Crimped Sheets are made of 26 gauge, or lighter, size of sheet ^xl-16-inch, crimped cross¬ ways of the sheet up to 36 inches wide, and furnished in any stock length. The crimping makes the sheets about three gauges stiffer, and takes out waves and buckles. They can be worked in a brake and bent, after crimped to any angle, without breaking material. Largely used for Cor¬ nice, Mouldings, Window and Door Case Coverings, Panels, etc. CRIMPED EDGE ROOFING AND SIDING GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Fig. 235. Crimped Edge Roofing and Siding Sheets will lay 2d inches wide, as they are 2d inches from center to center of crimp. Stock lengths, 6, 7, 8, 9 and dO feet. It is made from 28 to 18 gauge. This makes a cheap, durable fireproof roofing and siding, used largely for covering rolling mills, saw mills, cotton sheds, barns, etc. It can be laid upon sheathing boards, purlins, or direct to rafters. We will form a lock on the end of the sheets, before shipping if desired, at additional cost. This makes a much better joint and takes less material than when they are lapped. An ordinary mechanic can lay eight to ten squares per day. Wood strips are furnished, unless otherwise ordered. 20 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. CRIMPED EDGE ROOFING LAID UPON SHEATHING BOARDS] Fig. 236. CRIMPED EDGE ROOFING LAID ON RAFTERS Crimped Roofing is laid upon rafters without sheathing. The rafters must be put 24 inches apart, from center to center. Place cross pieces between the rafters level with the top of rafter to support the sheet; put one at each end and one in center of sheet, or about four feet apart. To lay the Crimped Roofing, commence at left hand corner of eave and end of building, and lay the sheets from eave to ridge, locking the ends of sheets together, malleting down the end lock, and lapping one crimp over the other at sides. Nail through the top of crimp about eight inches apart. This roofing should not be laid upon a pitch less than four inches to the foot. Fig. 237. THREE-CRIMPED SIDING The cut shows our Three-Crimp Siding. Stock lengths, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 feet. The crimps are one foot apart, and represent barn board siding. The sheets lay two feet wide by full length of the sheet, less one inch lap on end of sheet. There is no lock formed on the end of these sheets, unless desired. This material can also be used for roofing, by lapping the end of sheet about four inches, or, if so desired, we can furnish it with the end locks, formed, which is charged at extra CLEVELAND, OHIO. 21 CORRUGATED SHEETS FOR ROOFING, SIDING, CEILING, ETC. GALVANIZED OR PAINTED / Our corrugated sheets are made from either Charcoal Iron, Double Refined Puddled Iron or steel; largely used for roofing, siding, ceiling and partitions for fire proof buildings, and can be applied on sheathing boards or directly on wood or iron rafters or purlins. By our improved machinery we are enabled to furnish these goods with corrugations of uniform shape and size, so there will be no trouble in making the sheets fit accurately when applied. The succeeding cuts and descriptions show the different kinds we make. We cut the sheets to fit the roof, sides and gable ends, if required, charging for the time it takes to do the work. Our painted sheets are thoroughly and neatly coated by machinery, which proves very much better than with a brush; using our renowned Red Iron Ore Paint, unless otherwise specified. Our corrugated sheets will be shipped in bundles, unless otherwise ordered. If crated, an additional charge of ten cents per square will be made. In carload lots, corrugated iron will be shipped without being bundled or crated, unless otherwise ordered. An extra charge will be made for bundling or crating. CAP CORRUGATED ROOFING GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Fig. 207 Illustrates our five-inch cap corrugated made from 16 gauge or lighter; used on either iron or wooden frames; stock lengths, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 feet. The edges are turned up, making a stand¬ ing seam, 11 inches high; the cap is then placed over the seams, turning down f inch each side, as shown in Fig. 207. The method of applying is the same as cap roofing with short cleats on sheathing boards, with the exception that the ends of the sheets are lapped 4 to 6 inches, according to the pitch of the roof, in place of being locked; then applying our Roll ridging, Fig. 358, on the ridge of the roof. For applying to iron beams and purlins a long anchor is used, passing the anchor or strap around the purlin or beam, the same as ordinary corrugated, and hooking or fastening to both standing edges of the sheets, before the cap is placed. CORRUGATED SHEETS FOR ROOFING, SIDING, CEILING, ETC GALVANIZED OR PAINTED THREE-FOURTHS INCH CORRUGATED Fig. 205 Shows the finest corrugated sheet we make, of 34 corrugations, each corrugation measuring three-fourths inch by one-fourth inch deep. Regular lengths, 0, 7, 8, 9 and 10 feet, by 26 inches wide, and is made of Nos. 28, 26, and 24 gauge. It is used for siding, ceiling and partitions, but is most appropriate for ceilings. Covering width, about 25 inches. CORRUGATED SIDING FOR ELEVATORS This siding is designed more particularly for grain elevators. The corrugations are made crosswise of the sheet, so when applied they will run up and down the building, giving more elasticity to the material and preventing its buckling. In laying, lap the sheet on the one below, about one inch, as shown in Fig. 206, then nail through the upper sheet about one inch above the lap, thus allowing for movement of the iron as the building settles. The regular size of the sheets is 32 inches long and 26 inches wide. In ordering, specify “Elevator Siding.” Manufactured from Genuine Charcoal Iron, Double Refined Puddled Iron and Steel. CLEVELAND, OHIO. 25 CORRUGATED WOOD FILLER Cor re gated wood filler, as shown in Fig. 213, should be used under the corrugated sheet both sides of the eaves, filling up the spaces between the corrugations, that would otherwise be left open, and thus keeping out the driving storms and winds. DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING CORRUGATED SIDING Fig. 213. Commencing at left hand corner, lay the courses from base to cornice, giving sheets a lap of one inch at the end, and one corrugation at the side of sheet. Nail side laps every six inches, and end laps in every other corrugation, driving nails, as shown in Fig. 212. If siding is put on studding, care should be taken to have the studding the same distance as the laying width of iron used. A piece of wood should be put in between the studding, at the end of the sheet, to which to nail the laps. If posts are used, girths can be placed two to eight feet apart, and side laps riveted about every 12 inches. CORRUGATED ELEVATOR SIDING In covering grain elevators it is necessary to use swinging scaffolds. Commence at the base and carry the courses up to the eave, the length of scaffold. Beginning at left hand, give the sheet a lap of one corrugation on the side, and one inch lap on the end. Nail in every corruga¬ tion three inches from lower edge of sheet; this allows for the settling of two inches in every sheet. Put no nails in side laps. Finish up the corners by putting on ridge capping or corner pieces. DIRECTIONS FOR ORDERING ROOFING AND SIDING Be careful to state just what you want. Fill out a diagram with accurate dimensions. Accuracy is of the greatest importance. The customer must be responsible for the correctness of his figures and drawings. If you want us to cut siding to fit, provide drawings showing the distances from corners to openings, between openings, below and above openings, and the sizes of the openings. Unavoidable waste in cutting material to dimensions is invariably charged at full price, and labor added. In ordering ceiling, give size of the room, the space from center to center of joists, if possible, and also the way they run across the room. State whether or not you have made the necessary allowances for turn down or projection (as the case may be) at eaves, and for side laps on sheets, or if you wish us to add them to your figures. When ordering Corrugated or Crimped Roofing, for ridge roof, state if we shall send Ridge Capping, and which kind. When ordering Corrugated, Crimped or Beaded, state what kind of roofing or siding you want ; state the gauge, whether painted or galvanized, and which size of corrugate, if you want corrugated iron. CLEVELAND, OHIO. 27 FITTING AROUND CHIMNEY Fig. 209. Lap the corrugated sheet onto the flashing above the chimney 4 to 6 inches, and flash tip onto the brick about 4 inches. FITTING AROUND STACK Fig. 210. In flashing around the stack use plenty of Garry’s Roofing Cement, where the end wall flash¬ ing is riveted to the roofing. 28 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. VALLEY FOR CORRUGATED ROOFING Where there are valleys in the roof, form from plain sheet iron or steel, and lap the corrugated sheets over the valley 4 to 6 inches, as shown in Fig. 208. Manufactured from Genuine Charcoal Iron, Double Refined Puddled Iron and Steel. Fig. 208. PITCH OF ROOF We do not advise the use of corrugated sheets on roofs of less pitch than three inches to the foot, except on awnings, which will answer at 1| to 2 inches to the foot. Truss roof should have a pitch of one-fourth to one-fifth. The following table shows the distance apart the supports should be for different gauges of corrugated sheets : Nos. 16 and 18 Nos. 20 and 22 No. 24 . No. 28 . 6 to 7 feet apart. 4 to 5 feet apart. 2 to 4 feet apart. .... 2 feet apart. INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAYING CORRUGATED ROOFING Fig. 211. Commence laying the sheets at the left hand corner of eave and end of building. Continue laying to the ridge by lapping the ends four inches, and the left hand edge over the edge of the roof and nail the same to barge board; or, in case it comes against a fire wall, nail to sheathing board, then flash the wall with our corrugated flashing. Begin second course at eave, giving one corrugation for each side lap, taking care that the side corrugations center each other exactly. Nail in every other corrugation at end laps, and about every six inches at side lap, nailing through top of corrugation, as shown in Fig. 211. Continue laying until roof is covered. If a ridge roof, finish up ridge with our Corrugated Ridge Roll, as shown in Fig. 353, page 23. If there are hips on the roof, cut the iron up the hip, and cover hip joint with our Hip Capping. When there are valleys in the roof, from plain sheet iron or steel, form a valley lining (painted on both sides) from 18 to 24 inches wide; fit it in the valley and cut corrugated iron to fit the valley. Lap the corrugated iron over the valley 4 to 6 inches. 29 CLEVELAND, OHIO. RIDGING GALVANIZED OR PAINTED ANGLE RIDGE CAP Fig. 357. STANDARD PRICE LIST Adopted March 1, 1906. Apron. Girt. • Painted. CLEVELAND, OHIO. 37 TABLE OF SHEETS PER SQUARE To find the number of sheets in a given number of squares: Multiply the number of squares by the number set opposite the length of sheets desired in the column for the material wanted. The result is the number of sheets. • 2* in. V. C. P. S. S. Corrugated Etc. * 26 in. wide. 24 in. wide. Odd feet . 46.1538 50.0000 Odd inches . 553.846 600.0000 5 feet . 9.231 10.000 6 feet . 7.692 8.333 7 feet . 6.593 7.143 8 feet . 5.769 6.250 9 feet . 5.128 5.556 10 feet . 4.615 . 5.000 12 feet . 3.846 4.167 If for odd lengths divide the numbers above by the length and multiply as before stated. If length is in inches, use the number for “odd inches.” If in feet use “odd feet.” To Ascertain Length of a Curved Sheet by following Table Rule— Divide height by base, find quotient in column of heights, take length for that height opposite to it in next column on the right hand. Multiply length thus obtained by base and pro¬ duct will give length of sheet. Example — Find length of sheet, base (or span) being 100 inches, rise being 25 inches. 25 divided by 100 equals .25; and .25, per table, equals 1.15912. length of base, which multi¬ plied by 100 equals 115.912, which is length of sheet. CURVED SHEETS If for ceiling, give exact distance between webs of iron beam, rise of sheet, and length and number of sections, as per diagram Fig. 252. If for rooting, give number and length of sheets and radius required. For rules of measurements, see page 38. 3§ THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. C6ntinental Shingles are made from steel, painted with our metallic paint; also from galvan¬ ized iron. The sheets are 14x14, and will lay 12x12 inches, and stamped into such forms as to make them impervious to rain, wind and snow, besides being very architectural in appearance. They are fastened to the roofing boards in such a way that they are held firmly, no nails being exposed, as shown in Fig. 254. Fig. 254. They are formed in a press, uniform in size and shape, and can easily be applied by any one. Each plate fits in its place perfectly, so that the nail hole, the tongue on the lower end of each plate, and the slot in each left hand side at the apex, all come into their proper place, so there can be no mistake i?i applying. One hundred will lay a square. CLEVELAND, OHIO. SWISS COTTAGE METALLIC SHINGLE AND SIDING « Fig. 255. This cut shows a new style of Metal Siding and Roofing, which is used more especially for fancy siding. This is laid the same as the Continental Shingle, the difference simply being in the design. DIRECTIONS FOR LAYING CONTINENTAL AND SWISS COTTAGE SHINGLES Line the space to cover in squares of eight and one-half inches, except the first line from the edge of eave and gable, which should be seven and one-half inches. This allows one inch for bending down at the eave and gable. For the first course at the eave, cut the plate crosswise through the center of sheet, and lay the upper half at eave. Commence at the left hand corner and let them project over edge one inch to bend down and nail. The lower half will finish the roof at comb. For the gable, cut the plate through the center lengthwise, and lay the right hand piece on the gable, allowing one inch to bend down and nail. The left hand half will finish at the opposite gable. Keep the points of the plate upon the lines so that each plate will come in its proper place. In laying the shingle, place the tongue at the lower end of plate into the slot, which is cut in the left hand corner of plate, then nail where the holes are made. Where there is a gutter or valley on the roof, line the gutter or valley with tin, the same as for slate or shingles. Let the tin extend well up the roof. For first or lower course, strike a line parallel with comb or roof, a little above the highest point of the gutter, then a second line eight and one-half inches above and parallel with the first line, then line the balance of the roof, as above described. Cap the ridges and hips with our Ridge Capping. We recommend the use of our waterproof or rosin felting under the shingles, which we furnish at the lowest market prices. We furnish nails adapted to the work, at market prices. When the roof is completed, paint the whole with our ready mixed metallic roofing paint. It takes about one quart to coat a square. Send for samples. 42 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. PRESSED STEEL BRICK Fig. 256. GALVANIZED OR PAINTED Sheet Metal Siding, lately placed on the market, is an excellent imitation of brick. On a building it is the counterpart of finely finished brick, making the most attractive and handsome sheet metal covering yet produced or offered the building trade. It makes an elegant facing for store fronts, and certainly takes the place of the old galvanized iron fronts, because it is cheaper, makes a handsomer front, and is more easily applied. Trinidad Lake and Bermudez Lake Asphalts are especially prepared for the purpose. Many years of use has demonstrated that these natural bitumens are superior to all others for roofing purposes. Genasco Ready Roofings remain pliable and retain their elasticity for years under all cli¬ matic conditions. They will not crack or disintegrate when subjected to extremely low tem¬ peratures and will not soften or run under the fiercest summer sun. They are acid proof and fire resisting, not affected by sulphuric fumes or gases. There are four styles of Genasco Ready Roofing as follows: Sectional Illustration of GENASCO MODEL READY ROOFING Crushed Quartz Trinidad Lake Asphalt Burlap Trinidad Lake Asphalt Wool Felt HEMHH Trinidad Lake Asphalt SitSiSiS Genasco Model Burlap Ready Roofing (patented) is the strongest, most resisting and handsomest ready roofing made. Its life is the real natural Trinidad Lake asphalt. The wool felt foundation is reinforced with a layer of burlap. Both are thoroughly saturated and coated with natural asphalt. Every particle of fibrous matter is positively sealed in this great water proofer. Note the asphalt coating on the under side. The surface is of crushed quartz, which makes an unusu¬ ally strong resister of fire, and presents an attractive appearance. It requires no painting. The burlap makes Genasco Model strong. It will not tear in handling and will resist any wind short of a cyclone. Model Roofing is the cheapest in the end. Rolls contain 112 square feet, which cover 100 square feet of surface —the extra 12 feet is an allowance for 3-inch laps. A piece of two-ply Genasco Asphalt Felt is enclosed in each roll to use under the vertical joints. Genasco Stone Surface Ready Roofing consists of two thicknesses of compressed wool felt of the finest quality, thoroughly saturated with asphalt and with a layer of asphalt between the sectional illustration of plies. On top is another layer of asphalt, in which is embed- genasco stone surface ready roofing ded a surface of sea-beach gravel. Sectional Illustration of GENASCO WHITESTONE READY ROOFING I Crushed Stone Trinidad Lake Asphalt Wool Felt ■■■■■■■ Trinidad Lake Asphalt Wool Felt Genasco Whitestone Ready Roofing is similar in appearance to the Model Roofing. It comes in two weights—1-ply and 2-ply. The 2-ply has the same construction as Genasco Stone Surface Ready Roofing, except for the surface, which is a finely graded crushed quartz, not so coarse and heavy as the gravel. This makes just as effective a roofing, lighter in weight, but containing the same quantity of waterproofing material. One-ply Whitestone is a single layer of saturated felt with the same asphalt coating and mineral surface as the 2-ply. Genasco Smooth Surface Ready Roofing, slate colored, alike on both sides, is made from densely compressed wool felt saturated with natural asphalt, with a layer of the natural asphalt sectional illustration of on both of the outside surfaces. This makes a lasting water- genasco smooth surface ready roofino proof roof which does not dry-out, crack, or become brittle and break; neither will it run in the hot summer sun. If painted every two or three years with Genasco Liquid Roof Coating, its life is prolonged indefinitely. I Trinidad Lake Asphalt : Wool Felt I Trinidad Lake Asphalt Genasco Smooth Surface Ready Roofing is made in four weights: |-plv, 1-ply, 2-ply and 3-ply. For ordinary purposes 2-ply is generally used. The 3-ply roofing is best adapted for large roofs exposed to unusual weather conditions. 50 THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. BLACK AND GALVANIZED SHEETS MADE FROM STEEL AND GENUINE CHARCOAL IRON Fig. 467. I 14 WOOD FILLED FIRE PROOF DOORS AND SHUTTERS Fig. 271. The above cut shows the Garry Patent Wood Filled Shutter. In placing our fire-proof shut¬ ters upon the market, it seems unnecessary to say anything concerning the vast importance of more thorough protection against fire. The principal features of the Garry Shutter are: It is made of wood, and is covered on both sides with sheet iron, steel or tin. The wood gives stillness, and prevents warping in case of fire. It cannot fire the window casings, as the shutters are covered entirely with metal. Neither will they warp by heat, nor admit the flames. Experi¬ ence proves that it is the only really fire-proof shutter. Send exact size of opening, inside of brick jamb, also exact location of the eyes. For further instructions, see page 4G. CLEVELAND, OHIO. I I BOILER PLATE FIRE-PROOF DOORS AND SHUTTERS Fig. 272. This cut illustrates our Boiler Plate Shutter, made of No. 14 boiler plate. Boiler Plate Shut¬ ters are made of any desired weight and shape, upon receipt of plans and specifications. Our shut¬ ters are well made, with strong hinges and fasteners. Eyes for the wall, and locks with keys fur¬ nished, if desired, and at the very lowest prices. We make estimates and quote special prices when parties furnish us the exact size and shape of opening. THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. I 16 DOUBLE CORRUGATED FIRE-PROOF DOORS AND SHUTTERS Fig. 273. Cut shows our Corrugated Shutter made from two sheets of 1*4 iiTch corrugated iron. The sheets are put together, leaving an air space between the corrugations; thus forming an addi¬ tional fire protection, and making a shutter much superior to the single sheet construction. It is very generally adopted by the board of underwriters throughout the country. CLEVELAND, OHIO. ii 7 SINGLE CORRUGATED FIRE-PROOF DOORS AND SHUTTERS Here is shown our new Single Corrugated Shutter, as it appears on the building, and also a cross section showing the way it is put together. This shutter has an air chamber between the flat and corrugated sheets, which prevents it from heating through and warping, in case of fire. Our method of fastening makes it burglar proof. We can recommend it very highly for all kinds of shutter work. Send for prices. I is THE GARRY IRON & STEEL CO. RULES FOR MEASURING Openings.—Make no deductions for openings, chimneys, stacks, skylight, dormer window or ventilator, unless such openings measure more than 50 square feet; if more than 50 square feet, and not more than 100 square feet, deduct half the size of the opening; if more than 100 square feet, deduct the full size of opening. The labor to flash pipes and round stacks, whether of brick or iron, is charged extra. The reason for not deducting otherwise than as specified is that the waste of material and extra work in cutting and fitting the material for flashing such openings is equal to or greater than the value of the materials cut out. Gutters and Valleys. — Multiply full length by full width of girth. Siding. — Multiply full length of each section by the height. Directions. —Make no de¬ ductions for any window, door or other opening, unless said opening measures more than 10 square feet. If more than 10 square feet, and not more than 25 square feet, deduct one-half of such openings; if more than 25 square feet, deduct all of such openings, except when the wood casings to the windows, doors and other openings are to be covered with iron or steel casings; in such instances, no deductions for openings are to be made, whether the openings be more or less than 10 square feet. Gables.—To estimate contents of gables, multiply the width by one-half the height, or mul¬ tiply the height by one-half the width. Corner Strips.— Are charged extra by the lineal foot; the cornice is charged extra in all in¬ stances, as the price varies according to the girth of material used and style of the same. Eave Troughs and Conductor Pipes.—Measure the entire length, and add one foot extra for each miter, shoe or other angle. Flashings.—Measure all material used necessarily, including unavoidable waste, except where no deductions are authorized for openings. Ceilings.—Multiply the length of each section by the width; separate mouldings, panel divi¬ sion strips, stylings, cornices and friezes are calculated by the lineal foot, extra; rosettes and other ornaments are charged by the piece; painting other than first coat is always charged extra. Make no deductions for openings measuring less than 10 square feet; if more than 10 square feet, deduct the full size. Domes, Spires, Etc.—Measure all material necessarily used, including waste; charge for it at its value, together with cost of labor applying the material at wages agreed upon. CLEVELAND, OHIO. V Crimped, Beaded, Weather-Boards (Iron or Steel).—The full length of sheets, together with the actual covering width, is calculated. Standing Seam (Iron or Steel) Roofing.— The actual covering width and full length is cal¬ culated, whether the sheets are connected by end locks and shipped in rolls, or are separate and shipped in crates. Wide Gutters and Valleys.— The full length and width of material is calculated. Nails, Wood Strips, Dry Paint and Ready Mixed Paints are sold by the pound, gallon or square (the amount generally required in applying a square). They are not included in the price quoted on the Sheet Iron or Steel, but are charged as separate items when furnished. RULES FOR MEASURING AFTER THE MATERIAL IS APPLIED TO BUILDING Roofs.—Measure the length of the roof, including the amount turned up or down at each end or gable, and multiply by the distance from eave to eave, including the material used in the ridge seam, and the material lapped either down or up at the eaves. Roofs with Hips, Valleys, Dormers, Etc.—Measure each section through the center hori¬ zontally, and multiply by the length of the strip of metal at center, and in addition to the actual surface of the roof, measure the length of hips and valleys by one foot wide.
