DEDEGATE OF THE FRANCO BEDGIAN COMMITTEE Rev. Henri Anet, of Clabecq, near Waterloo, Belgium. Percy J. Clibborn, Organizing Secretary* Office : Room 612, 105 East 22nd Street New York City. The Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, the American Section of the World Presbyterian Alliance, the Presbyterian Church U. S. A. and the Presbyterian Church of Canada have passed resolutions warmly commending the Franco - Belgian Delegation to the sister Churches of the United States and Canada for their assistance and prayers- AN APPEAL FOR THE Belgians and the French Huguenots TO THEIR AMERICAN BRETHREN Belg lum and Northern France have heen devastated hy the War and the whole population is still suffering intensely. Unemployment is general ; the misery is appalling and will increase greatly this winter. The American Relief Commiffee is doing much to alleviate the distress, hut American Christians will naturally feel a special responsi¬ bility towards their Protestant brethren of the war stricken regions. Fighting has taken place all along the line of tt e mission stations in Belg mm and Northern France. Thousands of homes have heen de¬ stroyed ; thousands of non-combatants, men, women and children have heen killed. Manses, churches and mission halls have heen destroyed; hut religious work has continually heen carried on with great devotion in the midst of the surrounding chaos. By far the largest part of the home missionary work in France and Belgium is under the direction of the Franco-Belgian Commiffee, which is represented in this country at the present time hy their Dele- gate, the Reverend Dr. Flenri Anet. They h ave 439 churches and missionary stations, 1 35 pastors and evangelists, beside many lay-workers and deaconesses. Their total yearly expenditure amounts to $162,300.00. War conditions have naturally caused a heavy deficit, which can only he made good ly the generosity of our American friends. Failing this, much of the work so devoutly built up, will fall to the ground. Thousands of poor peasants and workmen, orphans and widows, wives and children of deported Belgians and prisoners are turning to their pastors and churches to get financial help and consolation. In the Protestant clinics the D eaconesses are nursing thousands of poor people suffering from starvation. Tke evangelical churches offer a sure and direct means to help the war sufferers and their hands should he strengthened m this work of mercy. We therefore, beg to address an earnest appeal to the Christians of our country, who enjoy the blessings and prosperity of peace, on be¬ half of the churches which are sorely tried hy the War. All donations, both large and small, will ke deeply appreciated. The Delegate The Reverend Henri Anet, B.D., LL.D., doctor in Social Sciences of Brussels University, springs from a sturdy stock of Pastors and Missionaries. His family has been associated with the Evangelization of Belgium for seventy-five years. Born near Liege, Dr. Anet has worked for fifteen years as a missionary in Belgium. In 1911, he made an ex¬ tensive exploration in the Belgian Congo which led to the formation of the Belgian Congo Mission. As the official representative in Brussels of several of the American Congo Missions, he has greatly helped our African Missionaries in their relations with the Belgian Government. He was several months in Belgium under German rule and was present at the surrender of Brussels ; he visited Rheims and the French first line trenches in September 1916. He has seen the battlefields and desolated places in Belgium. Last Autumn he visited the Belgian battle front in Flanders, and had a very interesting interview with King Albert, who gave him an important message that will be heard with interest. DONATIONS Donations are earnestly requested by the Executive Committee. Checks should be made payable to the order of EDMOND E. ROBERT, Treasurer, • 3 Maiden Lane, New York City.
