United Cork Companies FLOORING DEPARTMENT LYNDHUItST, N. J. BRANCH OFFICES IN PRINCIPAL CITIES The Highest Achievement in Floors Our forefathers considered it sufficient when it came to laying floors in their homes, to have a few good cobbles in front of the fireplace. These they figured would hold the heat in winter, and be cool in summer. Advancing civilization has brought about many changes in the erection of buildings, including the elevating of buildings off the ground, and concrete construction. Such construction is in reality revers¬ ing the object of the cobbles of our forefathers—it is cold in winter and hot in summer. In order to overcome this and to provide comfort, floor cover¬ ings have become necessary. The most successful development in this line is the use of cork tiles. By the use of cork tiles, all so-called “common faults” of floors are overcome. CORK TILES are non-conductive of heat or cold, are quiet, sanitary, resilient, non-absorbent, comfortable to walk on, and the diversity of their color tones makes it possible to install a floor pleas¬ ing to the eye and in harmony with general decora¬ tive and architectural schemes. The principal factors required in an Ideal Floor are—Beauty, Durability, Comfort and Silence. Many types of floors possess one or more of these properties, but Cresent Cork Tile Floors have ALL of them. They fully satisfy all de¬ mands of these requirements, and in addition they Showing the interior of the Lawyers’ Mortgage Building, New York City. The floors are entirely Crescent Cork Tile. Due to the inherent toughness, elasticity and resistence of the Cork, Crescent Cork Tile Floors are more Durable than most other floors. They withstand shocks without breaking, will not check, splinter or warp, and are capable of bearing heavy loads without crumbling. They are floors which give the utmost in satisfaction. CRESCENT CORK TILE is manufactured of pure cork placed into iron forms or molds and compressed to the required density. The molds are then conveyed into ovens w T here they are baked for a number of hours under a carefully gauged uniform heat. By this process the inherent sap is exuded from the cork and made to form an insoluble binder of the entire mass, firmly sealing it together, making a solid, yet resilient board requiring no other kind of glue or cement. The boards obtained are then cut, trimmed and polished to the desired sizes and thickness. CRESCENT CORK TILE is made in three shades; light, medium and dark. No absolute uni¬ formity in shade is however, aimed at, nor is it desirable, as it would rob cork tiles of their char¬ acteristic individuality. All cork tiles of standard make are of a uniform thickness of j/j". This thickness insures long life. Tiles of less thickness should not be used. 2 Federal Reserve Bank, Atlanta, Ga. Other sizes are made to order. A square foot of *4" Cork Tile, prop¬ erly baked and of a density to insure best service, should weigh about 20 ozs., vary¬ ing somewhat as between the lighter and darker shades. Before attempting to lay the tiles, con¬ ditions of under floors should be carefully investigated. Improper under floors may spoil or ruin the best laid floor. If per¬ manently satisfactory floors are desired, it is also necessary to use the right kind and amount of cement, nails, pressure, etc. We have in our employ experienced mechanics who have made a study of laying cork floors of all sizes and designs and un¬ der the most varying conditions. We are, therefore, in position to install your floors in an entirely satisfactory manner should you entrust this work to us. After a Crescent Cork Tile floor has been properly laid and finished all that is required to keep it in good condition is an occasional scrubbing with soap and water. The use of alkaline soaps, however, must be avoided; such soaps will affect the ap¬ pearance of the cork tile and may in time destroy its texture. We can furnish 5 mu with the proper grade soap at lowest cost. CRESCENT CORK TILE Floors may also be given a polished or w T axed finish. Such finish is very effective and is coming more and more into favor. It will make the cleaning of the floors a good deal easier. We are in position to apply this finish at a reasonable cost. If the simple instructions which we send out with invoices covering installations made by us are followed Cresent Cork Tile floors will last as long as any hardwood floor. One can work all day and not have that tired wornout feeling—so often the cause of inefficiency—caused by 4 standing on hard wood or other ordinary floors. Many important banks throughout the country have been using Crescent Cork Tile Floors for many years and have found them to be ideal. Libraries In many libraries throughout the coun¬ try Crescent Cork Tiles have solved the question of quiet and dust. The cork tiles being laid with sealed joints prevents the accumulation of dust between cracks so prevalent in wood floors. Upkeep on cork floors is reduced to a minimum as there is no finish to worry about. The use of soap and water for cleansing continually im¬ proves the appearance. The library of your residence, office, or institution will be improved by the installation of Crescent Cork Tile Floors. Churches Church floors have always been a problem. Carpets used until worn and ragged are still found in many edifices principally because the more sanitary and durable floors have not been applicable be¬ cause of noise, etc. Crescent Cork Tile Floors are noiseless, resilient and sanitary and when laid become a permanent part of the building. The method of cleaning makes it possible to en¬ gage help who will find that they can clean it with very little effort. There is no deterioration or moth-eating going on during the week or vacation period. Send us a sketch of your church floor with measurements and we will submit es¬ timate on a Crescent Cork Tile Floor.
