Mfg. Co., at Mt. Vernon, N. Y., in 1907, the column and porch material business of that Company was trans- ferred to the Western factory at Chicago, 111., operated by the firm of Henry Sanders Co., at Elston and Webster Avenues, and a consolidation of interests effected. The name of the new Company is Hartmann-Sanders Co., location, Elston and Webster Avenues, Chicago, 111. New York office, 1123 Broadway. This company has built, for its own use, the largest factory building in the world, devoted exclusively to this class of work, and with our present capacity of over 40,000 square feet of floor space and equipped with the most modern machinery of our own design, we are in position to furnish columns that are abso- lutely correct, both architectually and mechanically, in the shortest possible time. A modern dry kiln with 1,000,000 feet capacity per month insures the proper seasoning of all lumber entering into construction of our product. With sixteen years of experience behind us, we have been able to perfect the organization of the various departments of our factory, so that the different parts of the work are done by men particularly trained in correct column construction, both from a mechanical as well as architectural view point. With this perfect organization and the unequalled equipment of our plant we can make good all promises of shipment, both large and small, that we make when the orders are placed with us. Owing to the fact that we are located in one of the best markets in the world for both material, labor and transportation facilities, we are in a position to furnish the goods manufactured by us at the lowest possible price consistent with the material and workmanship for which our product has become noted, and in offering this present price list, we can assure our customers of a product that cannot be excelled in any way, at prices that are somewhat lower than we have been able to make in the past. The prices in this catalogue are based on a specially selected grade of White Pine for exterior work, as a standard, which is carefully selected by our own lumber buyer at the saw mills and cut under his direction. This wood is in our opinion the most suitable for column work, and we always carry a large thoroughly weather-seasoned stock on hand at all times. But should you have a preference we could fur- nish columns in Cypress at the same price as White Pine, or Red Wood at a 10 per cent reduction. Prices on sizes over 16 inches diameter on application. We can make plain or fluted columns and turn same in the lathe up to 54 inches in diameter and 35 feet long. Owing to great variety of pilaster detail, we cannot publish a fixed price list but will quote net prices on receipt of detail giving section (see catalogue page 5) style and dimensions. This price list supersedes all former prices. We make no extra charges for turning columns to your detail, but in the absence of detail, we make columns to conform accurately to the usual orders of architecture, as shown by the various cuts in this catalogue. We manufacture our own capitals of composition or staff for columns and pilasters. This permits us to fill all orders with great accuracy and despatch. As we pack goods with the greatest care, we are not responsible for break- age or loss in transit, our bill being guarantee of good order when shipped, also that number of packages called for were forwarded. All shortage should be noted on freight bill and any damage of breakage noted by agent on the same, before payment is made. We will help customers to sustain damage claims if fully informed as to the loss. 3. In the absence of the usual commercial rating, send us check or satisfactory references with your first order, else the order may have to wait until we determine what credit your financial standing entitles you to. 4. Thirty days net or two per cent discount for cash, ten days from date of in- voice. Where prices are made delivered, freight charges are first to be deducted. 5. Prices subject to change without notice. GUARANTEE All our work is guaranteed as to material, workmanship and durability, with the understanding that the goods will have intelligent care after they leave our pos- session. You can avoid unnecessary trouble by seeing that columns are not stored on the ground or elsewhere without sufficient protection both under and over them until they are put in place, also that the proper flashing is applied to the capitals (See Page 7), and the columns and capitals properly painted as soon as practicable. Chicago— HARTMANN-SANDERS COMPANY— new york INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORDERING COLUMNS ANI) PILASTERS Our great difficulty has been to properly interpret the wants and the requirements of our customers, owing to the very meagre information we usually receive, particularly as to the exact number required, thickness and kind of stock, style of caps and bases, etc., and we would earnestly request that you give the following instructions very thorough considera- tion. When ordering columns from our catalog give quantity wanted and size at largest and smallest diameter of shaft, and length overall. State if for interior or exterior use. A glance at the cut opposite will show where measurements are usually taken. You will he safe in using our catalog numbers. All our details are carefully planned from the dimensions given by the approved authorities, but we make no extra charge for fol- lowing your detail, if similar to any of the designs shown in our catalog. When ordering pilasters to match columns, give dimensions at top as well as bottom of shaft, or state whether width is to be equal to the largest or smallest diameter of the column, or if they are to have the mean diameter of column shaft or if they are to have the same taper as the columns. This, you will note, makes four ways of making square columns and pilasters, and unless we know what is wanted, we cannot enter the order. Give also depth of return. Refer to line drawing of sections of columns and pilasters below when ordering. We prime all exterior and interior columns (unless made of hard woods) one coat of lead and oil unless otherwise notified. As interior columns are often stained, this would cause trouble, so that you ought to state in your order if you wish them primed or not. We make no extra charge for priming. We make columns up to 54 inches in diameter and proportionate length. THICKNESS OF STOCK As the price of a column is regulated largely by the amount and kind of lumber that enters into its construction, it is very important to state the thickness of stock of which you wish the columns made. Our many years’ experience as specialists in column construction has demonstrated to us that the thickness of stock for the various sizes as called for in the following table provides enough material to properly carry out the architectural detail and afford sufficient strength. Should an unusual load be placed on the column, they can easily be reinforced by inserting a timber or iron column. We can make the column either way, but of course, will have to be guided by what your specifications and details call for. IRON AND CEMENT PLINTHS Where columns rest on cement or brick floors we recommend the use of iron or cement plinths. We are prepared to furnish these in all sizes. -nicACo— HARTMANN-SANDERS COMPANY— new vork STEEL REINFORCEMENT We apply a Corrugated Steel Band or Ferrule Reinforcement, as illustrated, to the bottom end of all Doric Columns that have no base. This is a very valuable feature in this type of column, owing to the absence of the base, which permits the water to run under the column unless it is scribed very closely to porch floor. The steel band, while adding considerable strength to the shaft, permits of some flexibility so that not much injury can be done by moisture that may be absorbed. We also add this rein- forcement to both ends of large column shafts. SPLICE JOINT In addition to the perfect lock joint we use to unite the staves of the columns together, we have devised a joint to splice the butts of the staves if the length of columns calls for material longer than can be secured in one piece. It is practically impossible to make a tight butt joint without this splice. These joints are put together with screw pressure and hot glue. These added features make our column mechanically perfect. FLASHING OF COMPOSITION CAPS We show an Ornamental Capital herewith with the proper Flashing applied. This fea- ture is so frequently omitted that we consid- ered it wise to call attention to it in this way. If the entire top of the cap is not covered with this flashing of sheet lead or copper, the water that strikes the cornice or facia is bound to run down and into the cap, effecting its ulti- mate disintegration, as well as subjecting the inside of the column to unnecessary moisture that might cause the swelling of the material, which is, of course, undesirable. We are prepared to fill orders for caps only, if desired, from 3 to 40 inches in diameter, and of any design. Our stock models are made of the propor- tions called for by the various orders of architec- ture. Caps of conventional design are modeled with very pleasing lines and of proper proportions. Our work will be found clean and well executed. Our experience as column specialists, together with the fact that we employ none but the best artisans, assures satisfactory results. We keep in stock for prompt shipment the sizes and styles of caps most frequently called for. Caps for exterior use are treated to withstand the deteriorating influence of the weather. Those for interior use can be stained to match any color woodwork. These capitals will not shrink, check or decay. The material being fibrous in character, may be sawed, nailed or screwed ; but being of mineral com- position, is not affected by atmospheric conditions. We can furnish any style cap carved in hard or soft wood; prices on application. The tops of exterior caps should always be flashed with sheet lead or copper.
