ONNECTED with the art of illuminating, these faithful savants achieved no little success with the binding of the volumes. The enormous labor expended on the contents required bindings of substantial material and they selected cowhide as warranting centuries of service. The wisdom of this is evidenced by the thousands of volumes still preserved. These times were contemporaneous with the founding of the Re¬ naissance in England under Henry VIII by his architect, John of Padua; with the foundation of the French Renaissance under Louis XII by Fra Giacondo and its development under Francis I, influenced by Seralio, and also with the best period of the Italian Renaissance. Guided by the inspiring genius of Michael Angelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, Albrecht Durer and Hans Holbein, who were all doing their noblest work about this period, these pious brothers ornamented the bindings so as to conform with the artistic contents. The results attained, crude though they were, formed the basis for the art of Leather Sculpture as practiced to-day. 3 Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2020 with funding from Columbia University Libraries https://archive.org/details/designerssculptoOObuss IKE other arts, which have been lost through the changes of time, this was allowed to lapse during the unruly days of the Reformation, for the firebrands of religious warfare left no time for tedious employment. It remained lost for centuries until in J88t, during the period of tre¬ mendous developments in the art industries in Germany, Henry Busse, of Hamburg, revived this most exquisite art, fitted it to the more modern times, and to-day many European palaces testify of the beau¬ tifying results which can be attained through this medium. Travelers abroad are enthusiastic over what they have seen, and in the past decade our most exclusive dec¬ orators have imported these objects in the form of screens, furniture coverings, etc. 4 THE BUSSE STUDIOS, No. 1.05 WALNUT STREET, PHILADELPHIA U, S A FOUNDEQ 1901- DESIGNED AND MADE AT THE BUSSE STUDIOS 1105 WALNUT STREET phiwadelphia, u. s. a. gjrojggjir .mfWJS nisi lUitas~\ 'okBDrETfn ' 'UNE DIPIGt.'^' ESOLUTIONS and memorials bound in leather, with the covers handsomely sculptured with characteristic and emblematic designs, form very artistic tokens of remembrance. The individuality, which can be acquired in each instance, owing to our work being entirely by hand, adds materially to the pleasing results. The resolutions ordinarily contain a hand-illuminated pres¬ entation, setting forth the vital facts in connection with the occasion, together with either the photographs or the signatures of the parties making the offering. The memorials contain the illuminated wording of condolence, along with other appropriate matter. As in every instance the ideas and wishes vary, we are prepared to frame such matter to suit our clients and will very cheerfully submit sketches. 6 PORTFOLIO CONTAINING PHOTOGRAPHS OF VESSELS BUILT AT CRAMP S SHIPYARDS, PRESENTED TO HIS MAJESTY, THE GERMAN EMPEROR, KING OF PRUSSIA. designed and made at the BUSSE STUDIOS nOS WALNUT STREET PHILADELPHIA, U.
