PAVING CUTTERS f UNION OF THE UNITED STATES AND jCANADA Albion, N. Y„ Feb. 1, 1906. William Dodge has been duly elect- ed Union Secretary for another term and Albion, N. Y., for headquarters. hold good f^r aiv>ther year, and so on indefinitely. CHi-RLES LAWRENCE, Secretary Branch 31. Work has again started up at Sand- stone, Minn., after an idleness of 'sev- eral weeks. Trade is good at Santa Rosa, Cal. The bill of prices has been signed by the companies. There is work there for moi'e paving cutters, and for the benefit of any member going there to work we have decided to publish the following letter from the Secretary, Charles Lawrence: Dear Sir; — We have come to an agreement with the employers of pav- ing cutters here. A large majority of onr members are pleased with it. The ))rospects are bright for a good year’s work; there is work here for more men, but I would not advise them to come without knowing the conditions. A paving cutter here has to do every- thing except haul his blocks and pro- vide everything excei>t sharpening tools and coal. The stone is Basalt; it lays in boulders above and below the ground. The cuttei's have to wheel away the dirt, blast the stone if it is too big to ping, drill it down small enough to work into blocks. The stone is mostly found in reddish gravel and clay, and in the rainy season, which is on just now. it is disagree- able work. He has to sharpen his tools, drills and hammers; provide himself with powder and fuse, plugs and feathers, and all other tools ex- cept what I mentioned first. This has been the condition ever since the blocks were first made, over thirty years ago. Some cutters make good pay and others not so good. It de- pends a .great deal on. the claim they get. It is a fine climate here and one can live better for less money than in any of the Eastern states. The ])rices paid for cutting blocks are: $27.50 per thousand from .Tanuary 1st, to .June 1st, of this year; there- after the price to be $30.00. The agree- ment is signed for ,one year, and if either i)arty desire a change in the bill three months notice must be giv- en. If no notice is given the bill to The bills of prices has been signed by all the companies at St. Helens, Oregon. There is plenty of work at Granite Quarry, N. C., blocks shipped right along. Future prospects are good. The branches at Red Granite and Spring Lake, Wis., have piesented their uniform bill to the companies to take effect April 1st. Dunbar Branch has sent a com- mittee to McCance and several other places in Pennsylvania to try to or- ganize the paving cutters at these ])laces. There ought to be no trouble in getting the men at McCance, as there are about twenty union men working there, sixty-two men alto- gether, three of our members work- ing there, holding final cards. Hurricane Island, Vinal Haven, Wal- do])oro and Long Cove and Stoning- ton Branches are to have a uniform' bill of prices. Oiib member from each Branch has been elected, all to meet in Rockland, some time in February. This is a good move on the part of the Branches and we .hope some satis- factory agreement can be made whereby the paving cutters in that locality will be materially benefited. .A new c^jbany has been formed at Albion, N. Y., called the Albion- Medina Stone Comi)any. The dii'ec- tors of the new company are Stan- ley E. Filkins, . Charles A. Gorman, Bertram E. Harcourt. The quarry- men who ha,-ve combined their inter- ests are A. H. Ford, M. O’Biuen, Ed- ward Fancher, Herbert Reed, Stan- ley E. Filkins Edward Vincent, Wm. Newsome, W. H. Farrand, Wm. Rob- inson, C. A. Gorman, Richard O’Brien, Bertram Harcourt and .John LeValley. The officers are: A. H. Ford, pres- ident; Herbert T. Reed, secretary; Edward Fancher, salesman. Mr. William Dod.ge, Secretary, Pav- ing Cutters’ Union of the United States and Canada. 87 East State St, Albion, N. Y. Kansas City, Mo. — Mayor Neff and four members of the city council re- turned from a trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul, where they have been in- specting the sandstone blocks used in that city. “Prom our investigations,” says the Mayor, “we were convinced that the sandstone blocks make the best pavement. We saw streets in both Minneapolis and St. Paul which were paved ten years ago with sand- stone blocks and instead of needing repairs they are in better shape now than on the day they were put in place.” “Sandstone is better for the business streets for a number of reasons. It is durable; it never becomes ‘slick’ and rainy weather has no effect upon it. This sort of pavement will cost us about $3.00 per sq. yd., that, of course, is more than we would have to pay for asphalt, but we would not be con- tinually paying out money for repairs.” St. Paul, Minn.— r-Engineer Rundlett advised paving Grand Avenue with either sandstone or granite blocks.
