Van Steenbergh 156 Fifth Avenue, New York City THOUGH it is true that for us in America, the great War is over, Armenia remains the warring ground of the Nations. Her fight is still on against starvation, disease, and the great enemy, the Turk. He is still making rapid advancement in accomplishing his desire — the destruction of a Christian nation. IN 1921 Only last year, the murderous Turk suc- ceeded in destroying one hundred and forty 'villages, and turning out the population to die. The women by violation and death, the men by burning and death, and the little children by being driven out to die. A conservative estimate states that during the past year the Armenian ration of popula- tion is one in three, as compared to pre-war times. IN 1892 Thirty years ago, in 1892, under conditions similar to those existing today, the Apostolic Institute was begun, as a school for destitute Armenian orphans. Until July of last year, the Board of Directors in America, delegated to Dr. Haigazian, the directorship of the work. Since his death, we have been fortunate in having one of our directors, William S. Dodd, M.D., take charge. Under date of January 28th, he wrote that he was planning to start the school again in the primary department, as the Government authorities were favorable. 'Will you give us money to educate this little Kirl. who has heen on her own for many months, and who needs a mother's care?" IN 1922 Today we find our teaching staff scattered and our buildings dilapidated. On the other hand, there are thousands cf children waiting to be educated and cared for, now temporarily sheltered by American hands. As much as at any time in the past, we are in need of funds with which to begin the work of re-construc- tion. When opportunity offers itself, a new Staff of President and teachers must be wisely chosen, and a large amount of money laid out in renovating and perhaps rebuilding our school. It is felt that the time is not yet ripe, but we must seize our advantage when opportunity comes. OUR OPPORTUNITY American people have done well in the past, yet withal, thousands of innocent children have died by starvation because there was no room for them and no bread to feed their weak bodies. Today the living must be cared for, or they will surely die. AN ASTOUNDING REPORT Dr. John H. Finley of New York reports the following conditions : "The dead gathered up daily and carted, like so much refuse, to the outskirts of the city, and there interred without ceremony in a common ditch, every train carrying hundreds of the stronger on the roof of the cars, on the bumpers, any- where that foothold could be secured, all in search of food that did not exist." "Today, in Armenia, for every child inside an orphanage, there is at least one outside, without shelter or food or friends. The saving of the children must come first. And worst of all, dozens and even hundreds of children are being turned away every day to wander the streets, hungry and half naked." It is an old, old story, the tale of these little children that need our help, but help must be continued or they will die as they are dying by thousands, daily. Let us fight the good fight with all our might so that the children of Armenia may indeed lay hold on life. CONTRIBUTIONS Checks made payable to George R. Brauer, Treasurer, and mailed to 156 Fifth Avenue, New York City, will be promptly acknowl- edged. Enclosed is an envelope, self addressed, for this purpose.
