Hence, vain deluding joys ! Mere pleasures of the sense ! What are ye all but toys, Empty and false pretence ? Far higher pleasures here I reap, With God communion while I keep. What book with this compares ? What so the mind improves ? What thus for heav’n prepares The soul that Jesus loves ? Here would I still delight to dwell. And learn the wonders taught so well. Say, did not Aaron’s rod The other rods devour. Which seem’d what they were not By magic’s art and power ? E’en so shall Scripture Truth, at length, Assert its might, and prove its strength. 18 GENERAL SCRIPTURE READING. As, with the op’ning day, The stars all disappear. The sun’s own glorious ray Illuminates the sphere ; ’Tis thus the Bible only can Engage and fill the soul of man. Here’s no Apocrypha, No legendary lore; Tradition’s specious ware. Nor falsehood’s erring store.: But the pure Sacred Word alone. By clearest evidences known. All ranks, all classes find, Within the hallowed page, To edify the mind. Lessons for youth and age. All, on the same appointed hour. Peruse the self-same words with pow’r. As sound, united, tells Upon the ear with force. So meditation swells With sympathy its course: All hearts, all voices join to raise The prayer of faith, and hymn of praise. GENEEAL SCEIPTUEE EEADING. We live not to ourselves, And, if we Christians are. We die not to ourselves. But in each other share. In Scripture Reading, too, we may This rule of Charity obey. With equal steps proceed To brighter realms above ; Help’d on with mutual aid Of Faith, and Hope, and Love. Thus all, as one united band. Advance towards Immanuel’s land. Eternal thanks be thine For such a bright display. As makes e’en darkness shine With beams of gladsome day. My soul rejoices to pursue Thy blessed steps, till heaven’s in view. ’Tis not by bread alone The life of man’s upheld ; God sends his blessings down In sacred truths reveal’d : Each word that from his mouth proceeds The way to bliss eternal leads. GBNERAI, SCEIPTUBE BEADING. The earthquake and the fire, The whirlwind and the flame, Do not our souls inspire With hve to his great Name: But in the silent still small voice He speaks—and then our hearts rejoice. Our hearts within us burn While Jesus, on the way. Talks with us, and we learn His holy will to obey: Our hearts he opens to receive The truths of Scripture, and believe. The Spirit gives the Word, And brings the Truth to sight; And Promises afford , A sanctifying light: A glory gilds the sacred page. And sheds a light on every age. Majestic like the sun. It wai-mth and light supplies ; It gives, but borrows none. Its truths o’er all arise. They rise, indeed, but never set: Precious, unbounded, infinite. GENERAL SCRIPT :E REARING. 21 0 let thy ‘Word of grace My hourly thoughts employ ; Be this, thi-ough all my days, My treasure and my joy : 0 may thy servant always learn The sacred path there to discern. Boast not yourselves, 0 friends. Instruction is so cheap ; There are important ends For us in view to keep : The Day of Judgment will declare How CHEAP it is, or else how dear. For every creature’s good. It cannot he denied ; None is to be eschew’d. When rightly sanctified: And sanctified, indeed, they are By God’s most holy word, and prayer. 22 THE TREE OP LIFE. A FRAGMENT. Compare Gen. 3, 22—24 with Eev. 22,1, 2. Grant me to feed upon “ the tree of life Its fruit to gather, and to “ live for ever That tree, with “ healing of the nations ” rife, Which whoso eats, no more from thee shall sever. Twelve manner fruits that heavenly tree doth bear, One sort each month, its every week and da}'; To entertain our souls the live-long year, Their solace and support, their strength and stay, Their help to wing their flight from earth to heaven away. Call we our neighbours to partake our joy. Under the fruitful vine and fig-tree’s shade ; Where pleasure’s streams abound without alloy, And furnish pure delights which never fade. This is the day the Lord himself hath made ; A day of tidings good, and news untold; Let us impart to others, as He bade. The message of his Gospel, and unfold The treasures of his love and grace laid up of old. 6ENEKAL SCKIPTtJRE READING. 23 SPECDIENS IHB MAKSEP.
