VAN DORN IRON WORKS, CLEVELAND, O. B Foot Panel Set on Iron Foundations. First : A panel of fence consists of two or more horizontal channel rails, about eight feet long, with square upright bars or pickets, “E,” placed about 4 inch centers — the square holes in rails are punched with the square sides parallel with rails, see “D-D,” and the corners of the picket “E” are reduced to the size of the square, see “H,” and slipped through the square holes “D-D,” see picket “E,” as far as the reduced section, then turned one-quarter around, bringing the corners of the square pickets at right angles with the square holes in rails and inter- locking, see section 15. The dog “F” is driven in place and clinched (see sectio n) so the picket cannot be turned back and disengaged. Posts and gates are made in the same manner. N?8 VANDORN S PATENT. are made in tne same This interlocking of the pickets and rails should be thoroughly understood as it is a perfect mechanical invention and insures the strongest possible construction of panels, gates and posts. Foundation: The panels are supported at each end by brace posts attached to iron foundation or stone blocks as shown by 1, 2. and 7 and 8, which are attached as follows (see Nos. 1 and 2): The main upright “B,” to which connections “A-A” are attached, slip through sleeve “L” and run into a close fitting socket “N.” The brace is hinged to sleeve “L,” and bolted to arm of foundation “M.” When in proper posi- tion, the steel cup pointed set screws “V” are screwed into the corners of the main upright, cutting into the same so as to make an immovable joint. No. 3 shows center bearing of panel attached to iron support, and secured by set screw “O” in same manner. No. 4 shows foundation to post with the four legs entering sockets of foundation, and secured by set screw “P-P.” This arrangement gives a brace each 8 feet and a bearing each 4 feet, securing the panel laterally and vertically, and allowing adjustment at every joint. Stone Foundation: No. 8 shows brace post attached to stone block, in which attention is called to the foot “N,” which is attached to brace the same as on iron foundation, the foot “N” being secured to stone by a bolt, dovetailed in center, thus secur- ing the greatest strength of stone, the nut giving means of drawing the foot “N” down tight and secure. This method will not break the stone, the foot “N” being from 8 to 12 inches long, gives a broad base, which decreases the leverage. The panels are attached to brace posts by means of connections “A-A,” the ends of panels being slotted to allow expansion and contraction of rails as caused by variation of the temperature. The distance between the gate and post is adjustable, so as to lower or raise the front of gate. The catch can be moved up or down 60 as to allow the brass latch to properly catch, the catch being arranged so the gate can be made to open from either side or both sides. Section 15. WHAT IS GAINED BY THIS CONSTRUCTION OVER OLD STYLES AND OTHER MAKES. First: The interlocking makes the horizontal and uprights absolutely solid and immovable, and panels, posts and gates stronger and better. Second: Adjustability is secured, and all attachments are absolutely sure to hold where placed, and in case of accident, the fence can be removed and replaced cheaply, all parts being made in duplicate. Third: The fence keeps straight and in line, is well and carefully made, with no imperfected joints or attachments. Finally : The fence is shipped and carted without breakage, and can be easily and cheaply erected by local mechanics when necessary. By sending us total number of feet of fence required, the number of .entrance gates and drive gates, and how many posts are needed, we will cheerfully give estimates on same.
