J. A. &. W. BIRD & CO., Manufacturers Boston St. Louis New York New Orleans Montreal Chicago REX FLINTKOTE ROOFING -AWARDED- GRAND PRIZE (HIGHEST POSSIBLE AWARD.) -AT- St. Louis Exposition OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SATISFIED KLex Flintkote hoofin' ^ ^ ^ E liave endeavored to present in this hook complete, terse and common sense facts regarding the merits of Rex Flintlcote Roofing, and have tried at the same time to show anyone in need of roofing that there is no other prepared roofing as satisfactory or durable as Rex Flintkote Roofing. If you are interested in building of any sort, the facts contained in this book are well worth your attention, because no matter how much money is involved in any building, you must have a satisfactory roof, one that will not leak, and one that is fire-resisting. The amount of money that you spend in repairs will more than offset the amount involved in laying Rex Flintkote Roofing. When a roof is put on a building it is seldom given any ther thought until it leaks or begins to wear out. It is a part of the building that is scarcely ever seen and is often forgotten until it begins to give trouble. It is very important, therefore, in considering the question of roofing, to know about the best; that is, the roofing that will wear the longest with the least expense, and the one that requires the smallest amount of care. It is true you can buy some roofing much cheaper than others, but this is also true of the material used in constructing the building, but the cheapest is not always the most satisfactory. Rex Flintkote Roofing is a prepared roofing that is durable, waterproof, and fire-resisting. It lasts for years, and will stand any reasonable test that you wish to give it. It is made from the best quality long-fibre, selected wool felt, and is first saturated with a material which is acid, alkali, and waterproof, the mass being subjected to great pressure, thus making a tough, pliable sheet of close texture, after which it is coated on hotli sides with our special waterproof and fire-resisting Copyright, 1904, J. A. &W.Bird & Co. Rex Flintkote Roofing is made of the best wool fibre. ii WE STAND BEHIND EVERY ROLL.” f compounds. Tlie flint coating is then put on. No tar is used in its manu¬ facture, and Rex Flintkote Roofing consequently does not run or sag in summer, nor become hard and brittle in winter. Rex Flintkote Roofing is less affected by changes in temperature, and is more durable than other roofings, due to the use of high grade and perfect non-conducting materials in its manufacture. Owing to the ease and small expense with which Rex Flintkote Roofing can be laid, it is fast replacing shingles, as the total cost laid is much less than the cost of shingle roofing, which is also intensely inflammable, while Rex Flintkote Roofing is the best fire-resisting roofing known. Galvanized iron and tin roofs are fast being abandoned on account of the condensation of moisture which collects on the under side, and means eventually rust and corrosion. They are also subject to contraction and ex¬ pansion, due to heat and cold, which opens the joints, causing leaks, and constant necessity of repairs and painting. The elasticity of Rex Flintkote Roofing permits of contraction and expansion without leaking at the seams, and makes an absolutely “ tight roof.” Rex Flintkote Roofing is very pliable and will not crack; heat and cold having no effect upon it. With Rex Flintkote Roofing repairs are practically unnecessary, and if, through accident, leaks should occur, they can be readily located and repaired, without the necessity of procuring a regular roofer. Rex Flintkote Roofing is also replacing tar and gravel roofs, as it contains no tar, which is one of its special advantages. Other roof¬ ings are made of tar and asphaltum com¬ pound, and soon become brittle and hard, deteriorating rapidly after the first few years. Copyright, 1904, J. A. & W. Bird & Co. Rex Flintkote Roofing resists heat in summer and cold in winter. It is also a well known fact that when tar is used on a fiat roof, that its great weight causes the roof to sag in spcts, and when it is used on a sloping roof, the intense heat will cause the tar to run down to the gutters, forming a heavy mass which drips when soft¬ ened by the heat. The sagging of the tar to the gutter also leaves a great part of the roof bare, leaks and LOOK FOR THE BOY ON EVERY ROLL dissatisfaction being the inevitable result. The light weight of the Rex Flintkote Roofing is important, as in new buildings lighter supports can he used, and buildings more or less weakened by age can he safely and satis¬ factorily covered with Rex Flintkote Roofing where the ordinary roofing would he dangerous. Many prepared roofings have burlap or canvas as a base, being secured and covered with various compounds supposed to be waterproof. These compounds and bases answer for the first appearance, but there the useful¬ ness ends, as after a time the water proofing is washed out of the pores of the burlap or canvas, and the latter being a vegetable fibre, rots and decays and the life of the roofing is gone. The best quality of selected wool fibre is used as the base of Rex Flint¬ kote Roofing, and the results obtained from it can be favorably contrasted to those of all other prepared roofings. It is unaffected by fumes, gases, vapors and acids, such as roofing is subjected to when put on boiler houses, foundries, factories, and railroad buildings, these fumes and gases having absolutely no effect on Rex Flintkote Roofing. It is abso¬ lutely waterproof under any and all conditions, which in itself is a strong recommendation for its use in place of shingles, galvanized iron or tin. Rex Flintkote Roofing is made of a practi¬ cally non-combustible material, which renders the matted wool fibre impervious to fire, and so is especially suitable for roofs near rail¬ roads or factories, or in any place where sparks are liable to fall. A burning brand, spark, or cinder falling upon Rex Flintkote Roofing will burn itself out without igniting the roof. This can be easily demonstrated by placing a hot coal on either side of the roofing, as both sides are fire-resisting. Around the edge of the coal, the roofing will burn slightly, but as the coal cools the material ceases at once to burn, and the fire does not spread. The flint coating is a valuable feature of Rex Flintkote Roofing. Copyright, 1904, J. A. & W. Bird & Co. Rex Flintkote is the most fire = resisting roofing known. Underwriters endorse it. . » “OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SATISFIED The enormous pressure used makes it a part of the roofing itself, giving it a flexible surface on a perfectly pliable non-conducting base. Although the roofing is laid on the roof with the dint side down, the flint is a valuable addition for many reasons. It absolutely prevents the roofing from sticking together in the roll in shipment; it assists materially in the insulating quality of the roofing and forms a minute air space between the roofing and the roof boards, and keeps the roofing from adhering to the sheathing, adding greatly to its resisting qualities against summer’s heat and winter’s cold. This circulation of air between the roofing and the sheathing allows the dampness in the roof boards to dry out naturally and prevents dry rot. Ordinary prepared roofing will stick fast to the roof boards under summer’s heat. The pitch exuding from the knots in the lumber softens the compound used in the manufacture of such roofing, and holes are the natural result. This is abso¬ lutely obviated by the coating of flint on Rex Flintkote Roofing, which prevents its sticking to the roof boards, the pitch therefore having no effect upon it, and is a very strong point in favor of the use of Rex Flintkote Roofing. The side of the roofing which is laid uppermost is treated with a special material wlich renders it practically fireproof, and Rex Flintkote Roof¬ ing is therefore endorsed by boards of fire under¬ writers throughout the country. It should be borne in mind that it costs as much for labor to lay the cheaper roofs as it does to lay Rex Flintkote Roofing. As it lasts three times as long as an ordinary roofing, it can readily be seen which is the more economical in the end. Each roll of Rex Flintkote Roofing contains two squares. It is put irp in rolls 72 feet long and 3(1 inches wide, containing 216 square feet of roofing, giving an allowance for two inch laps, copyright, 1004, j. a. & w. Bird & Co. which is not charged for. J ° ftWLUREKSCO (< > ) WE STAND BEHIND EVERY ROLL --- \ Anyone Can Lay Rex Flintkote Roofing EX Flintkote Roofing is of especial value in those localities where labor is scarce or high priced, because any one can lay it by following the directions which are packed inside each roll. In addition to full and explicit directions, we also pack inside the roll, nails, caps, and cement sufficient for lay¬ ing. This economizes space and prevents loss in shipping. When you want to lay Rex Flintkote Roofing you find everything but a hammer ready at hand. Rex Flintkote Roofing can be laid up and down or across the roof. Where a roof has a pitch of more than two inches to the foot, we advise laying across the slope as is shown in our directions. If the slope is less than two inches to the foot, we advise laying it up and down the slope of the roof, from gutter to ridgepole, making three inch laps and cementing carefully. It is advisable to remove all old shingles or roofing material before laying Rex Flintkote Roofing. In laying the roofing, the seams should be lapped two inches, applying a good coat of Rex Flintkote Cement, and great care should be taken in cementing between the laps. People are apt to be careless in this, and while they may start out with the brush well filled with cement, they are apt to work it out very thin in places. If this is done, it does not give enough protection between the laps. Drive the nails through the caps provided for this pur¬ pose, two inches apart from centre to centre, and three quarters of an inch from the edge, coating over the nails and caps with a liberal quantity of Rex Flintkote Cement. It is unnecessary to paint Rex Flintkote Roofing when it is first laid, and this need not be done un¬ til 18 months or 2 years after laying. When it is necessary, however, we recom¬ mend our special Rex Flintkote Roof Paint, which is made from many of the same compounds used in the manufactureof the roofing. Copyright, 1904. J A. & W. Bird & Co. Anyone can lay Rex Flintkote Roofing. 41 f » LOOK FOR THE BOY ON EVERY ROLL Dwelling Mouses, Piazzas and Light R.oors X Flintkote Roofing makes a most attractive roofing when properly laid, and a pleasing effect can be obtained on piazzas or light roofs by laying a three-quarter inch moulding over each of the laps after the roofing has been laid. Slightly longer nails should be used through the moulding than those we sup¬ ply. These battens or moulding can he painted the color of the house, adding to its appearance. The roofing in such cases, however, should always be laid up and down the slope, and caps should he dispensed with where the moulding is used. Dry Kilns Rex Flintkote Roofing has been used to a great extent on dry kilns, and in such cases, it should be understood that much better satisfaction can be obtained by allowing a good two foot air space between the roof boards and the ceiling, using a good insulating paper in the construction of such air space. We recommend our Ibex Insulating and Building Paper, which will add fifty per cent to the life of the entire roof. Farm Buildings Vv liile Rex Flintkote Roofing is recommended for any kind of a building, we wish to call particular attention to its value in roofing and siding farm buildings, such as sheds, poultry houses, barns, outbuildings, silos, etc., where a waterproof covering is absolutely necessary. It keeps the .oultry and stock warm and dry in winter and cool in summer and protects them from draughts and dampness, making them less liable to cold and disease. It is also an excellent material for lining feed boxes, etc., as rats and ver¬ min will not attack it. Rex Flintkote Roofing is odor¬ less, never contaminates the water with which it comes in contact, and such water can always he used for domestic purposes. Copyright, 1904, J. A. & vt. Waukegan, Texas, Oct. 2, 1903. J. A. & W. Bikp & Co., New Orleans, La. Gentlemen: — When we ordered Rex Flintkote Roofing to repair our recent fire loss we forgot to mention to you that un¬ doubtedly Rex Flintkote Roofing on our boiler house saved our entire two story saw mill. The fire broke out at five o’clock Sun- B day morning when everyone was asleep, and got under good head¬ way before it was discovered, and before it was extinguished burned one thousand square feet of our boiler house roof until it fell in, and we are pleased to say that the roofing remained intact, and kept the fire in the boiler house until the woodwork collapsed. The intense heat melted it slightly in places, and it started to burn a little on the edges, but to a very small extent. We would highly recommend its fire proof qualities.
