A B AJ SEE PRICE LIST IN BACK OF CATALOG AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVER 1 Building between 13 and 14 now our ANNEX or Factory rasEsataggseiai m m The MERIT reflected in the pages of this, the forty-first annual Catalog of ALASKA REFRIGERA¬ TORS, has been responsible for the sale of over 1,500,000 ALASKAS in the past—and is responsible today for tremendous sales that surpass all previous Alaska records by lib¬ eral margins. The ALASKA is the refrigera¬ tor of distinctive quality that proves itself on the floor of dealers through large and increasing sales—and in the homes of users, through its economy and durability. The four Cardinal points of ALASKA QUALITY have become famous—and these points commend themselves to your attention and action. They are: 1-Construction; 2-Insulation; 3 - Circulation; 4 - Materials. Yours very cordially, The Alaska Refrigerator Company ^CULA^c^ m uskegon, mich Alas ka Refrigerators Many Special Alaska Construction Features Insuring Economy , Durability , Convenience Outside Case The beauty of Alaska Refrigerators is as noted as their usefulness. The outside case of all hardwood Alaskas is of ash, with golden oak finish. The specially selected lumber is all kiln-dried by a special process, and the gluing up of the cases is protected by the best work¬ ing conditions. Perfect machining and gluing insures a perfectly assembled case, with joints that remain firm and dependable indef¬ initely. The figure of the wood is one of the prime points in its selec¬ tion and the result is a rich finish that insures the pronounced beauty of these cases. Cabinet Work Irrespective of whether part of the cabinet work is visible or invisible, it is all done by expert workmen, with the best modern facilities, in the customary honest Alaska manner. Nothing is neglected—nothing is slighted—but the top class of cabinet efficiency goes into every Alaska. Metal Work Like the balance of the work on all Alaska Refrigerators, the ice chambers are constructed of heavy material, re-enforced where essen¬ tial, to give added strength. The ice racks are strong, substantial, lasting, and will withstand the heaviest load of ice. Finish The Golden Oak finish given to the outside hardwood Alaska cases imparts beauty that is unquestioned. The foundation coat, or stain, is applied by a special method and the succeeding undercoats and finish varnish are all as carefully employed, giving a high furniture finish that makes every Alaska ornamental as well as useful. Interior Finish No part of the Alaska is neglected and the interior finish of the Grocers’ Refrigerator is in harmony with all other superior details. The provision chambers are lined with sweet, odorless, matched wood, and the interior woodwork is finished with three coats of the best quality of white shellac and sanded between coats. Around the doors and casings the inside wood is finished to match the outside. This is also shellaced. The result is a bright, clean, durable finish, pleas¬ ing to the eye, sanitary and commendable. Alaska Refrigerators Trimmings The appearance of the refrigerator is important and the trimmings employed demand as much quality as do the other parts of the con¬ struction. The Alaska hinges are heavy, solid brass, nickel plated, rust-proof. Patent lever fasteners on all doors, working on an eccentric, insure the perfect fit of all doors and therefore further refrigerating value and economy. The levers are nickel plated to match the hinges and are operated by a simple pressure. Strength, durability and beauty describe these trimmings. ' - Shelves Strength in shelves is always important and the slatted wood shelves, illustrated in this catalog, insure strength. They are tongued and grooved, dow r elled and glued, and can not come apart or become insecure. Waste Pipe The waste pipe adds to convenience and the noted sanitary Alaska features. It is built in sections and is easily removed anci cleaned. The extremely large diameter insures freedom from ready clogging, so common with the customary drain pipes. Patent Trap The water trap might easily feed warm air into a refrigerator, but the Alaska patent trap forms a perfect seal against this air invasion. It may be removed easily for cleaning and it is accessible because of its location in the bottom of the provision chamber. Mirrors Wherever mirrors are shown, the quality is of the very first grade of French Bevel Plate Mirrors—in harmony with all Alaska details. Glass The glass used in the provision doors is especially selected from D. S. A. A. glass, purchased at a premium because of extra quality. Clear, strong glass is the result-—an, item that is important in the display of goods. Casters The casters used on all Alaska Refrigerators are strong, double¬ wheel, roller-bearing, iron casters, with six casters on the heavier types to insure extra center bearing. Crating To insure the safe delivery of Alaskas, we use plenty of heavy crating, with corners of the refrigerators protected against accident in handling. The result is a bright, unharmed Grocer’s Refrigerator when it is uncrated. 5 G E RATORS Alaska Insulation and Construction The Most Scientific Insulation for Grocers’ Refrigerators Metal Lining Inside Matched Case Insulating Sheathing Wooden Cleats Carbonized Pebbled Cork Insulating Sheathing Outside Paneled Case Ice economies and refrigeration merit depend upon scientific wall construction. The above illustration shows the thorough manner in which our Butter and Grocers’ Refrigerators are insulated. Arrange¬ ment of the cleats divides the insulating material, consisting of car¬ bonized pebbled cork, into small compartments so it is impossible for it to settle and leave any portion of walls unprotected. There is from If to 3 inches of this carbonized pebbled cork used, with one thickness of insulating sheathing on the inside, and then a case of matched odorless wood lining. On the outside of the carbonized pebbled cork is placed another thickness of insulating sheathing, and then the outside paneled case. This construction insures economy in ice consumption, and, with our circulation of dry, cold air in the pro¬ vision chamber, perfect preservation of articles stored therein. 6 Alaska Refrigerator s Alaska Bolt Construction A Superior System of Re-enforcement To Alaska belongs the distinction of originating the idea of the re-enforcement of all Grocers’ Refrigerators with bolts extending through from front to back. This adds to the strength, durability and usefulness. In addition to these long bolts we use shorter bolts, inter¬ locking the several inner sections of the refrigerator, and long, re-enforcing screws extending through the front into the ends. From four to ten of the long bolts are used, depending on the size of the refrigerator. The illustration shows the substantial form of con¬ struction—an important item in Alaska durability. 7 A laska Refrigerators The food test is always in the flavor. Every housewife who trades at your store holds you responsible for the flavor and value of every¬ thing you sell. Prices may vary up or down the scale, but quality of goods must never vary. This must be stable—dependable. Quality argues away price — argues away pretty nearly everything else that might detract from trade. Without quality, all is lost. You are supposed to deliver goods fresh, pure, unharmed by intermingling odors or the process of decay. To know that you can serve your customers in this way is worthy of your sincerest effort. You might explain tardy deliveries, or clerical errors. Those are for¬ givable mistakes. But food—upon which the human life depends and builds—is too serious a thing to take chances with. If you could possibly add five, ten or maybe twenty-five per cent, to the life of your perish¬ able goods, you would extend your opportuni¬ ties of sale in like proportion. Perfect refrigeratiou —and nothing else—will achieve those results. ALASKA Refrigerators provide that perfect refrigeration. If you could be sure at all times of being able to meet every demand for perishable goods, through having those goods in stock, you would get your full share of trade Perfect refrigeration alone will enable you to purchase for greater demands—and deliver all such edibles in perfect condition. The result is an increase of trade, a heavier selling ratio to The food lest is always in the flavor. You cannot argue against lack of Quality. You can meet every demand for perish¬ able goods. 8 Alaska Refrigerators The full refrigerating value is secured from the ice. Brings many buyers past other stores to yours. The proper time is now. every customer, because of a larger and more varied stock, and greater economies through the minimizing of spoilage. All of these results are desirable, and yet they might still be debatable if the ice bills were going to increase. But—the same causes that promote refrigeration also keep down the ice bills. The full refrigerating value is secured from the ice. The melting is slower— the saving is greater. The great scientific causes that help your refrigeration of food save on that refrigeration. Another item to the advantages of the ALASKA. Set down as a self-evident truth (one that use proves to every ALASKA grocer) that the ALASKA saves in food, in ice, in good will. But the Alaska does not terminate its econo¬ mies there. It goes farther. It saves in labor. It saves in steps—in time. It suggests sales. It makes food look appetizing. Through its cleanliness it makes your display tempting. It imparts its image and its advantages in the minds and memories of men and women. It brings many buyers past other stores to yours, because the food purity, cleanliness and con¬ venience of display are all appealing. Sweetness and purity of goods — conve¬ nience of clerks—economy in every direction. There is a combination that you simply cannot afford to do without. It is a combina¬ tion that is working for many other wide¬ awake grocers, and that may begin to work 9 Alaska Refrigerators for you this moment—just as soon as you can have an ALASKA installed. Experience says that the proper time is now. Food is purchased not simply as a means of filling the stomach, but of building bodies. Pure food is the best food—and a guarantee of purity is a warranty of greater sales. ALASKA Refrigerators, through their scientific system of air circulation, keep all perishable foods at the proper refrigerating temperature. Look over your list of perishable foods. What is your spoilage? If a considerable percentage of these foods become rancid, strong or decayed, is it not reasonable that the other foods, not yet advanced to pronounced spoilage, carry a certain taint? Absolute purity alone is unassail¬ able. And the ALASKA Refrigerators are ready to serve you through insuring this final degree of purity —this safety that decides the scope and growth of your business. Let the ALASKA solve these problems for you today , tomorrow—PERMANENTLY. The ALASKA gets grocers away from sameness. It puts into its possessor’s pockets the profit that comes of serving better. Meth¬ ods of doing business do the deciding. But methods depend upon facilities—and without facilities there can be no service. Only as you serve can you succeed to the fullest - and the ALASKA Butter Refrigerator, with its numerous compartments and its innumerable economies, will make the very highest degree of that service possible. What is your spoilage? The profit that comes of serving better. That customer merits the very best you can do. 10 A laska Refrigerator s Your best friends would desert you, in time. Determined to offer “Alaska” service. The profits that come of serving better. The ALASKA is bringing this success to others, and it can bring the same kind and degree of success to you. Service simply refuses to be argued away. Your best friends would desert you, in time, if some other grocer could give better service. Just figure every customer as your friend—as your best friend. That customer merits the very best you can do. It costs something to get every new customer—so why not insure the retention of the old ones ? New customers gained and old ones held. Absolute food purity, cleanliness and inviting display. Less spoilage— less explanation. Less ice— better refrigeration. Profits paid in better trade, in economies on food and ice, and in the items of labor and advertising. These are just a few of the many ALASKA advantages, but they are important enough to make you determined to offer ALASKA ser¬ vice—now and throughout the future. ALASKA Refrigerators insure more profits and more good will. They return far more than their outlay—and pay for themselves over and over so many times that their greatest cost is in doing without them. These are facts that other grocers are prov¬ ing, and that you can and should prove—with¬ out any loss of time. And the best of all times to put these advantages to the test and realize on them is now—TODAY. 11 Alaska Refrigerators The World’s Most Successful Line of Refrigerators T HE following pages illustrate and describe the most successful line of refrigerators in the world. Proprietors of groceries and markets have found, through experience , that the ALASKA line insures scientific refrigeration , the most important factor in the upbuilding and holding of trade. The ALASKA is noted as the most extensive line of refrigerators made, and the following pages will give you the facts necessary in shaping your decision as to the type you wish. This catalog tells you, in pictures and words, the truth about a line of refrigerators, ranging from a Three-door Grocer’s Refrigerator to a Five-door, Roll- front Butter Refrigerator. In considering the type and capacity you need, take under advisement, also, what we have said in the preceding pages and in those that follow. And we suggest that you bear in mind the follow¬ ing document that pertains to every ALASKA Refrigerator. THE ALASKA GUARANTEE We guarantee every refrigerator bearing the name ALASKA to be perfect in every particular and to give entire satisfaction when properly used. THE ALASKA REFRIGERATOR COMPANY Exclusive Refrigerator Manufacturers MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN ^laska Refrigerator s The Alaska Butler Refrigerator A Refrigerator of Many Distinctive , Special Features The Alaska Butter Refrigerator possesses all the advantages of the well-known, durable Alaska construction. It is built along the lines of Alaska superiority. Also, the Butter Refrigerator possesses certain points of distinction of its own. This refrigerator is constructed of ash and is strong, durable, beau¬ tiful. Its air circulation and its insulation are according to demon¬ strated Alaska principles. The Alaska Butter Cooler is made with a double case, the outside case being of ash, and the inside of odorless wood. The space between the walls, as will be found explained on following pages, is thoroughly insulated according to the Alaska insulation system. The Ice Chamber The ice chamber is large, and the ice capacity, therefore, excep¬ tional, with a door at either end of the refrigerator convenient for filling the ice chamber. The Doors The doors of the butter compartment raise up and slide in, being out of the way of the clerk, and shutting off the supply of cold air. Thus there is none of the usual refrigeration waste during the time butter is being cut and weighed. The Lower Compartments The lower compartments of these refrigerators are for storage, and the upper compartments are for canned goods, bottled goods, etc. For convenience , economy , appearance and durability , the Alaska Butter Refrigerators are without rivals. Circulation The most important part of a refrigerator, next to the matter of insulation, is the circulation, and every one of our Grocers’ Refrig¬ erators has the original Alaska system of air circulation. More than in any other system the air is forced to pass over the maximum ice surface, keeping it cooled and dry to the very last possible degree. The proportion of the flues permits the proper circulation of air, with the result that the circulation is continuous , dry and uniformly cold . 13 Alaska Refrigerators Roll-Front Butter Refrigerator Hardwood No. 903 Three compartments. The Butter Refrigerator we purchased from you is as good today as when we purchased it and it has not cost us anything for repairs. Lydecker Bros. Co. Perfect Keeping Qualities Providence, R. I. In June, 1909, I purchased an Alaska Refrigerator to take the place of a Butter Refrigerator used in exposing for sale butter, lard, cream, etc. The Alaska Refrigerator has proved more than satis¬ factory in every respect, economical in use of ice, easily kept clean and perfect keeping qualities. The cooling space has been designed to make it very efficient in the handling of butter, lard, milk, cream and other articles. Wishing you success, I remain, M. H. Hawkins. In Use Eight Years Niagara Falls, N. Y. I bought an Alaska Refrigerator eight years ago. I have not spent one cent on it since. People say: “You’ve got a dandy ice chest there.” F. C. Griffiths. Boston, Mass. I am more than pleased with the Alaska Refrigerator I bought of you. It is a good silent salesman; it shows the goods and helps make sales. It saves from loss a large amount of perishable goods. It is economical in ice con¬ sumption. Increases I am very much pleased with the Alaska Butter Ref rig- Butter Sales erator. I increased my butter trade two tubs a week this summer and used but very little ice. Very satisfactory. W. A. Rusch. Melrose, Mass. A Box to About a year ago I purchased from you a No. 882 Proud Of Alaska Butter Chest and it is a fixture to be proud of. It is the very best cooler and ice saver that I have ever seen. During the extreme heat of the past summer, in a flat- tarred-roof building about twelve feet from floor to ceiling, with very poor ventilation, I have kept the chest at about 40 degrees and at no time has the ice bill exceeded 75 cents a week and that on rare occasions. That is a box to be proud of and I cheerfully recommend it to be all that is claimed by the dealers. H. E. DeCourcy. Pawtucket, R. I. Displays The Alaska Refrigerator you sold us last year has The Goods proven very satisfactory. We find it very economical in ice consumption. It is easy to keep clean, an ornament to the store, and displays the goods to very good advantage. We have been well pleased with the refrigerator and will gladly recommend it to any one in need of a first-class article. L. Whitney & Co. Alaska Refrigerators Lynn, Mass. Dry as a In reference to the refrigerator your salesman sold us, would say that we never bought a fixture in either of our stores that gave us as much satisfaction. In point of looks—has attracted many customers, thus proving a cracking good silent salesman. It has been as dry as a bone; bringing shrinkages down, and last, but not least, has proven a very small "Ice Eater.” It gives me great pleasure to be able to write you in regards to this, and I assure you it is done in all sincerity. Manhattan Market, H. J. Coyne. Not Lost a Pound of Butter All Summer Richmond, Va. I am more than pleased with the Alaska Butter Refrig¬ erator. I have not lost a pound of butter the whole sum¬ mer, have had equally good luck with eggs and my sales in both have doubled. The box presents a very attractive appearance and the display of goods is the very best. G. H. Plageman. Just The Thing Boston, Mass.
