ERECTED UNDER OUR PATENTS OP MAY 22, 1894. PLANT OF THE PIONEER PASTEURIZING COMPANY, AT RUSH CITY, MINN. For purposes of flre-prooflug- and heat and cold-resisting-, and the maintaining of even temperature, the projectors of this enterprise adopted our patented building specification as explained on folio-wing pages, and are more than pleased with the result. The machinery and equipment are from the Cornish, Curtis & Greene Co. of St. Paul, and the plant is pronounced by experts the best in the United States. In a letter recently received from the owners, they say: “The building is a most attractive one. Its outward appearance is such as takes close inspection to detect that it is not built of brick and stone. During this severely cold weather it is comfortably warm and dry, no frost from steam settling on the inside. We have been able to obtain from the insurance company a lower rate than is usually given on buildings used for similar purposes owing to its being so well fire- proofed. * “We are indeed very well pleased with the plans for construction and material furnished by your com- pany, and would recommend to any one contemplating the erection of a creamery or cheese factory, an in- vestigation of your cement-filled, steel-clad construction for buildings.’’ 24 ST. PAUL ROOFING, CORNICE AND ORNAMENT COMPANY. FIRE-PROOF WALLS. WE WANT AN AGENT IN EVERY TOWN IN THE UNITED STATES. Steel-Faced, Cement-Filled. PATENTED MAY 22, 1894. FOR WOODEN BUILDINGS. Affording protection against FIRE, MOISTURE, COLD, HEAT AND DECAY. The Cost Of this construction is less than brick or brick veneer, and is no j more than good wooden con- struction. (See estimates, page 25.) The Saving In insurance has run from 28 to 50 per cent of entire premiums, and in one case amounted to $90.00 per year. The Advantages Are many and include the protec- tion afforded upon the uninsured ; risk on both building and stock, i and opportunity for salvage on i account of slow-burning character. ! In calling attention to the patented method of construction herein shown, we have only to remind you of the almost daily reports of complete or partial destruction of villages, stores i and homes, reported in the daily telegraph news, in order to justify our claim that every j owner and builder is personally interested. The method is perfectly adapted for use with corrugated iron, pressed steel stone, or our ; patented slip-joint, rock-faced plates. i License to use may be secured for any city by addressing us at St. Paul. CROIX FALLS, WIS. I In which our construction Saved the store and stock and | Saved 42% in the rate of insurance. I _ — — I I i I I I The ST. CROIX VALLEY STANDARD, in its issue of Dec. 5, 1895, says: ! “Olson & Isaacson’s new store was next to Codden & Laskey’s and it stood the test. The ! whole iron side was red-hot, but the building came out unscathed. In this one fire the BUILD- j ING HAS PAID FOR ITSELF SEVERAL TIMES. If; in place of this NEW FIRE-PROOF BUILDING, the OLD * FRAMES had reared their heads, NO POWER ON EARTH COULD HAVE SAVED ONE SINGLE BUILDING | UPON THE EAST SIDE OF WASHINGTON STREET. The wind was right to sweep everything clean.” B®“In the left foreground where wreckage is shown in the above photograph, stood two frame buildings which caught fire and were entirely consumed, exposing our construction with the result stated. I Read carefully the Letter from the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company on Next Page. ST. PAUL ROOFING, CORNICE AND ORNAMENT COMPANY. St. Paul OFFICE OF Fire and Marine nsurance JOHN McClure, SPECIAL AGENT AND ADJUSTER, St. Paul, Minn. St. Paul, Minn., February 6, 1895. St. Paul Roofing, Cornice and Ornament Co., City. Gentlemen: In reply to your inquiry as to the damage done by fire to the Olson & Isaacson building at St. Croix Falls, Wis., constructed under the Deslauriers Patent and known as the “St. Paul Wall,” and your further inquiries as to my opinion as to the fire-resisting qualities and proper fire insurance rate for buildings of such construction, I have to say, that e.Kcepting the building above referred to, I have had no experience with such buildings. Gen- erally speaking, fire insurance companies have a poor opinion of ironclad buildings. This building, however, seems to be much superior to the usual ironclad construction, and per- haps my best way to answer your question would be to give a little history of my experience with this particular building. A few weeks ago I had a fire loss to adjust on this Olson & Isaacson building. The damage was all on the north wall and was caused by the burning of two frame buildings, the nearest one being 30 feet away, but the damage done to the Olson & Isaacson building seemed to have been mostly caused by the burning of five cords of maple wood that was piled between the buildings, and about three feet from the Olson & Isaacson building. The damage to the Olson & Isaacson building was settled to the full satisfaction of owners for fifty ($50) dollars. My opinion is, had it been an ordinary ironclad or frame building, it would have been burned down and in all probability have burned an entire row of frame buildings, situated 30 feet south. St. Croix Falls has no water works or fire department. The damage to the Olson & Isaacson building was chiefiy the burning off of paint and cost of replacing some of the outside iron or steel covering. As to the fire-resisting qualities, this particular building was certainly most excellent. The wind was high, I am informed, and blowing directly from the burning buildings toward this building. There was no damage to the inside of the building or the stock of drugs that 00 o c> were on shelves on the side exposed to the fire. As to the rate of insurance our State Tariffs have none tor such buildings. With this particular building, since the fire, the Wisconsin state board has rated same at $2.20, using as a basis ,^1.75, being the basis for the fourth-class towns in north half state, of the best con- struction brick v'^eneered buildings. Rate of $2.20 is made as follows: Basis #r-75 Additional for drug occupancy 25 Exposures (frame row 30 feet distant) 20 $ 2.20 If the building was frame it would rate $ 2-25 Additional for drug occupancy 25 Exposures (frame row 30 feet distant) 1.35 53-85 In this case the rate made was that recommended by the several individual members Avho had examined this building before and after the fire referred to.
