1 AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY STOCK FINISHES FOR KING MANTELS Quartered Oak, showing Stock Shade of Finish for Golden Oak Mantels. Genuine Mahogany, showing Stock Color for This and Imitation Mahogany Mantels. ABOUT OUR FINISHES OAK MANTELS With the exception of the mission designs, all of onr oak mantels are finished in Golden Oak, color similar to illustration on reverse side of this sheet. The mantels that are made quartered oak throughout will show the quartered oak flakes in the grain of the wood. Those made of selected oak, which term means plain or straight oak, do not show this flaked figure except on the columns and such other parts as may be made in quartered oak. The mission mantels are all made of straight oak, which is proper, and the stock finish carried is Weathered Oak. Other mission finishes, however, such as Antwerp and Flemish Oak, can be furnished within reasonable extra time. The woods in which each mantel is made, the stock sizes and finishes are all stated under catalog illustration and any devia¬ tion therefrom will be charged for at an extra price. The ad¬ ditional charges for such work will be quoted on receipt of speci¬ fications covering the same. I MI TA TION MAHOGANY MANTELS Imitation mahogany mantels are generally made of birch, which is a hard wood with a grain similar to genuine mahogany. In some of the cheaper mantels white wood and Tennessee maple are used for mahogany, making a very rich and handsome imita¬ tion of that wood. The colored illustration on reverse side of this sheet is a direct reproduction from a piece of genuine mahogany and shows stock color of finish for the mantels made in that wood and also for the imitation mahogany mantels. If special finishes in lighter or darker shades are wanted, a sample must be submitted and an additional two weeks’ time given in which to furnish the same. Stock shade of finish will always be sent unless otherwise ordered. “1 EV1 0 D El N Cl r A BOOK OF PROOF In which Pen and Camera play an important part regarding the Pioneer Line of Wood Mantels. Cable Address, “KING MANTEL” KING MANTEL COMPANY For Telegraph Code, see catalog. KNOXVILLE, TENN., U. S. A. Copyright by King Mantel Co. EVIDENCE HOW KING MANTELS ARE MADE King Mantels are made from facilities unsurpassed. Their home is located in the finest belt of hardwood timber in the United States and in this same radius is found the coal that is used in the factory where they are made, two important factors in pro¬ ducing the best mantels at lowest cost. MA TERIAL In the manufacture of our mantels only the most select stock of lumber is used, and on account of the greater volume of our output, we have advantages that are impossible with small factories and others not so favorably located. In addition to a large saw mill operated in connection with the factory, contracts are held with a number of outside mills for their entire output of strictly high grade lumber, especially selected by thoroughly competent men. This lumber, after being air dried not less than twelve months, is put through the most thorough and scientific dry kilns so that when it comes out it is then in proper shape for the machine department. WORKMA NSHIP The lumber is then taken charge of by cabinet men, of long years’ experience who are especially skilled in the manufacture of mantels, thereby insuring perfect joints and mitres and an absolutely smooth surface, the most essential thing for the high grade finish for which KING MANTELS have so long been noted. FINISH While KING MANTELS have a well established reputation for finish, which per¬ haps requires no comment, it may be of interest to our patrons to know how the splendid results are produced. The first step is to stain the mantel, for which purpose is used a special imported stain, the benefit of which is not at first apparent to our customers, as the cheaper kinds look just as well to start with but, like the cheaply finished photograph, the mantel finished with the other stain soon loses its brilliancy and tone, whereas ours is permanent. After the mantel is stained, it is carefully filled, particular care being taken to rub the filler deep into the pores of the wood. This, like the foundation of a house, is a very important process but one that by many is often neglected. After being filled, the mantel is sandpapered carefully and is then thoroughly cleansed of dust particles with com¬ pressed air and sent to the finishing room, which is dustproof. There it receives the first coat of varnish which we have especially prepared for this purpose. It then goes through the same process for the additional coats, which vary from three to five, owing to the style of the mantel. If the mantels are extra gloss finish, they are then ready for shipment, but if of the high grade piano polish, they are taken to the polishing department where, after being first rubbed with pumice stone and water, the wood is then cleansed of all particles of pumice stone and the mantels set aside to dry. After being allowed to stand for two or three days, they are then carefully rubbed with rotten stone and a very fine polish made from a secret formula, which not only gives them a very brilliant surface, bringing out all the beautiful effects of the wood, but a finish that is a credit to the makers and will stand the test of time. RESULT AND GUARANTEE From log to finished mantel, our work bears the severest inspection and, after being- prepared for shipment, it is sent out under the guarantee that, if not entirely as repre¬ sented or even better, your money back without question and we pay the freight both ways. CA HH ra WW 22 66 KNOX UNMOUNTED GRATES WITH REGULAR SUMMER FRONT WITH “ELK” SUMMER FRONT Outside dimensions, 24^2 inches wide, 30 % inches high. Size of grate, 20 inches. Summer Front of Heavy Steel and made in five handsome designs. If any preference so state when ordering. For open view of grate, see Mantel No. 736 on opposite page. Some “Grate’’ Points to Consider First: You want a good heater. Second: You want a grate that is perfectly clean in every respect, one that has good combustion, will burn the coal entirely to ashes and leave no clinkers or cinders. Third: You want a coal saver; that is, a grate that gets all the heat out of a certain amount of coal and no heat wasted. All of the above we claim for our Knox Grate, and this, coupled with the fact that it is of a very artistic pattern, makes it one of the most attractive and desirable fireplaces for the price that is on the market at the present time. We quote grate complete with Summer Front from the fact that grates, as a general rule, are in use only about five months out of the year, and for dosing up the fireplace when grate is not in use nothing is prettier or more attractive than an artistic Summer Front. Should Summer Front not be wanted with the Knox Grate, deduct $1.00 net from prices given where plated finish is specified, or $0.75 net where grate is specified to be in black finish. Summer Fronts are always sent unless otherwise ordered. Our customers will note that with a number of mantels the grates are listed in black finish. This is not a cheap black varnish like used on many low priced grates, but is a hand¬ some wrought iron finish and is generally taken with these lower priced mantels. Where plated finish, however, is wanted instead, add $1.00 net to prices given. We always send grates in finish that is quoted with mantel, unless otherwise ordered. BISMARCK MOUNTED GRATES No. 1 Bismarck. Open view showing interior construction. For closed view showing style of summer front, see Mantel No. 540 on page 39. No. 1 Bismarck. Rear view showing damper attachment. Heavy castings and strongest construction throughout. Outside dimensions, 24^4 inches wide; 30!4 inches high. Size of grate, 20 inches. FOR THE PRACTICAL BUYER Our King Grate has long been known as the heaviest, best and most complete mounted grate on the market. It still holds this record. The majority of customers prefer a grate of this kind but many feel that they cannot afford the price we are com¬ pelled to get for the King owing to the heavy and expensive construction of same. To meet this demand we have gotten up the Bismarck Grate as here shown. We believe it to be the best grate of its class on the market today. As will be noted, the grate is built altogether in one piece, of heavy construction throughout, yet the price is little more than that of an unmounted pattern. As a matter of fact, the cost is practically nothing more when you consider the following: First, you save the price of fire brick which are never quoted with an unmounted grate. The Bismarck, being built altogether in one piece, sets in the fireplace just like a stove and requires no fire brick. Second, you don’t have to pay for having the fireplace lined up with fire brick. Instead, simply make the opening to fit the Bismarck Grate and wire the grate in place. It is built already set. Third, you will have no experiments in adjusting the throat of the flue to throw the heat out into the room. The throat of every Bismarck Grate is built at exactly the proper angle and, if your flue is right, will always draw and never smoke. Fourth, an unmounted grate, which, as you know, consists of simply the frame, summer front, basket and ash screen, of course has no dampers. The Bismarck has upper and lower dampers, identically the same as the King Grate, by means of which the fire can be easily regulated and controlled at all times. The basket also has dump¬ ing bottom. When the Bismarck Grate is wanted instead of the Knox add $6.00 extra net for the No. 1 size shown above. We also have this grate in 24 inch size as the No. 2 Bis¬ marck (see page 21) for which $7.50 must be added if taken instead of the Knox Grate. 68 KING MOUNTED GRATES No. i King No. i King Open View Showing Interior Construction. Outside dimensions, 24)4 inches wide, 3054 inches high. Size of grate, 20 inches. Showing handsome appearance when closed with Summer Front. For more complete description see Catalog No. 39. This is our famous King Mounted Grate which is built together all complete in one piece and sets m the fireplace just like a stove. Has heavy tile back and sides, double draught dampers, slide in both fire front and ash screen, shaking and dumping bottom and many other desirable features. We guarantee the grate in every sense of the word and it is beyond doubt the heaviest and best pattern of a mounted grate on the market today. When the King Grate is wanted instead of the Knox, add $9.00 extra net for the No. 1 size as shown above, or $10.00 extra net for No. 2 size as shown with No. 472 Mantel on page 11. We also have this grate in 24-inch size as No. 3 (see page 31) and will furnish instead of the Knox Grate at $11.00 extra net. Either plated or black finish sent, according to mantel with which grate is ordered, and summer fronts are always sent unless advices to the contrary are received. TOP TILES AND FIRE BRICK We show here what is known as a Fire Back or Top Tile, which is used in modern grate setting for forming the throat of fireplace. These backs are made of a particularly tough Kentucky clay, famous for its heat resisting qualities, and are carried in stock in all sizes suitable for grates from 16 inches to 27 inches. They should be placed at back of fireplace, a little more than half way up, and brought forward from the top at an angle of about 45 degrees. We also have smooth pressed fire-proof brick of a very fine quality to match the top tiles and carry a large stock on hand at all times. Mounted Grates, such as the King or Bismarck, do not require either Fire Brick or Top Tile, as these grates are built together all in one piece ready to push back into the fireplace. All unmounted grates, however, such as Knox, Zero and similar patterns should have some good fire-proof lining. We do not quote Fire Brick or Top Tile with any of our unmounted grates from the fact that these articles are really a common commodity that can generally be purchased in almost any hardware store at a less price than our customers can afford to pay us and have delivered, as they are very heavy freight. For the benefit, however, of those who cannot otherwise obtain articles mentioned, we will furnish the same at the following prices: Top Tiles in sizes from 16 inches up to and including 22 inches in length are worth 50 cents each. Above this size, up to and including 27 inches in length, the price is 60 cents. The price of Fire Brick is 3 cents each. Twenty Brick are required for 20 inch grates and twenty-four Brick for 24 inch grates. Only one Top Tile is required for each grate. No shipment will include either Fire Brick or Top Tile unless particularly specified on order at prices given above, which are net in every case for goods f. o. b. cars Knoxville, Tenn. Special prices on car load lots of either straight Fire Brick or mixed Fire Brick and Top Tile will be named to dealers on application. King Top Tile 2 inches thick, 12 inches wide. Beveled one side Lengths, 16 to 27)4 inches. M BRASS ANDIRONS No. 10. 1 Yz Inches Wide Wrought Brass. Net Price, $2.50 14. 1 Yz Inches Wide Wrought Iron. Net Price, $2.80 The Frames here shown are in¬ tended for open Fireplaces only, being simply a narrow band to go around the fireplace opening, to give a finished appearance to same and hide the edges of the tile. The frames are made in only two sizes, known as 16 and 17 tile. The 16 tile size measures 24 Yz inches wide by 3 0% inches high, outside measure; the 17 inch tile size just 6 inches larger in width or 30^4 inches wide by 30J4 inches high. Now, remember this is outside measure; the inside measure is determined by the width of frame. Both frames shown above are \ l /z inches wide; therefore, the inside measure of the 16 tile frame will be 21 Yz inches wide by 28^4 inches high, and that of the 17 tile size 27J4 inches wide by 28J4 inches high. One of the most important departments of our business is that of floor and wall tile. In a catalog for general distribution, like “Evidence,” it would be too expensive for us to show in colors the many different designs that we have to offer. We are, therefore, merely calling attention on this page to the fact that our facilities for furnishing floor and wall tile of every kind are unsurpassed, and we will submit designs, in colors, to any interested party on receipt of description of their requirements. Our Ce ramie Mosaic unglazed tile, of which two designs are here shown, are burned at an exceedingly high temperature, and reports of scientific tests (copies of which will be furn¬ ished on request) have proved beyond question their durability over all other flooring materials. These designs are manufactured in the following colors: White, silver gray, chocolate, red, buff, salmon, black, celadon, light blue, dark blue, green, peacock and pink. The prices given above, however, are for body in white or red only, with border in black, red, buff or chocolate. For border in silver gray, salmon, celadon, light blue or dark blue, add three cents to average net price per square foot, quoted above. For green, peacock or pink in border, add five cents net per square foot. The dots in body of floor No. 40 will be sent to match color in border without extra charge. Where special colors are wanted for body, prices will be quoted on application. As a sugges¬ tion to our customers, we will say that the designs in black and white, just as shown, or with body white and border in red, make the most attractive combinations. For bath rooms, operating rooms in hospitals, etc., we have an alabaster white vitreous 2 inch hexagon tile, impervious to all stains or moisture, that makes an ideal floor. This is an extra fine quality tile at thirty-seven cents net per square foot, of which samples will be sent on application. In wall tiles, we can furnish all colors, shapes and sizes that are made, and on request will gladly submit special colored sketches suitable to your requirements. Such requests, however, should always be accompanied with rough sketches, giving size of doors, windows, etc., in rooms, and exact dimensions of spaces to be tiled. ABOUT OUR ENAMELED TILES We offer best quality tiles for hearth and facing, any color, by which we mean that our customers may make their own selection of colors and that the tile we send will be first quality and no seconds. We emphasize this particular point, knowing that first quality tile cannot be sold at a lower price than we quote and under no consideration will we handle seconds. The same color of tile should be used for both hearth and facing and the hearths may be had either with or without border as preferred. Embossed tiles for facings are extra and prices will be quoted on application. The principal colors of tiles carried in stock are green, rich brown, mottled onyx, in all colors, sky blue, old rose, old gold, cream, etc. Kindly state preference when ordering. We do not recommend that tile facings be slabbed, for this is simply an unnecessary expense, and a more satisfactory job should really be secured by putting up the facings from the loose tiles. However, where our customers feel that they must have this work done, we will slab the facings for cost of material, labor, extra boxing, etc., which will be from $2.50 to $4.00 per facing, depending on the size of same. Tile hearths are never slabbed in any case. levy DGTViCE;' ARTISTIC WOOD GRILLES (PRICES ARE FOR GRILLES FINISHED IN OAK OR WOODS OF EQUAL VALUE) KING GRILLES 18 inches.
