H. Kulp’s Ceiling Fans. Preface to Ceiling and Column Fans, JlU On the following pages are illustrated the celebrated Kulp Ceiling Fans, the design and construction of which, we think, will compare favorably with any goods ever before offered to an exacting public. Useful information is also given for putting up and running same. These fans are all listed with mahogany finished blades and solid blade carriers, and are finished in Japan and bronze, with all the polished iron work nickel-plated, When our Automatic Adjuster is used $3.00 must be added to the first price. The object of this valuable and important im- provement is to give absolute control of the direction and amount of circulation of air when desired. As the temperature changes it is desirable, for personal comfort, to increase or diminish the amount of circulation; and this can be accom- plished, without stopping the fan, by raising or lowering the sleeve at the bottom of the spindle. This movement will not injure the hand of the operator, as it ceases to revolve the mo- ment it is grasped, without changing the speed of the fan. Heretofore, in order to increase or diminish the amount of cir- culation, it was necessary to stop the fan and then adjust the blades. It will at once be observed that this is an improve- ment in connection with Rotary Fans for ventilating purposes. This improvement can be applied to any fan of our make. Prices range according to finish. All fans have 7-8-inch shafts, and one 7-xi-inch S. F. turned pulley is furnished with each fan. i4 The Marietta Manufacturing Co. Kulp Rotary Fan Driving; Appliances. THE LINE SHAFT SYSTEM. By this mode a line shaft is run down the center or side of the room, and the fans driven from pulleys on it by quarter- twist belt to each fan separately. So far as running the fans is concerned this system gives general satisfaction, but mam- persons object to it on account of the unsightly line of shaft and hangers, and in many cases the expense. The second system is BY TANDEM. By this mode from three to five fans may be driven, one from the other, though we do not advise — if convenient — over three in one line, as they do not in many cases give entire satis- faction, on account of the belts becoming loose and slipping over the pulleys. We have hundreds of fan plants in successful operation by the tandem system; and, to say the least in its favor, our customers are more than pleased with the improve- ment. We are prepared to cater to the wants of our customers by supplying any system. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ERECTING FANS. Particular care should be taken to find the position of the floor joist under the plaster of the ceiling, either by sound or probing with a small awl, where you desire to locate the fan; then bore for two large lag screws into the joist holes corres- ponding with those in the base plate; have your screws of sufficient length to admit of a hold in the joist of at least three inches. In no case place your fans more than 16 feet apart unless absolutely necessary; then use a belt carrier to support the belt, or you will have trouble with yonr belt running off the pulley from its own weight. Marietta, Penna. 15 BLADES AND MANNER OE SETTING THEM ON THE ADJUSTERS. The blades are all balanced by numbers branded on the back or upper side, and are shipped in pairs. Place blades of like number on the same fan, or, if at a high speed, it will not run so steady. You will observe that the adjusters have a ver- tical movement of about 7-8 of an inch; set them in position at one-half the stroke and set the blades flat. Tighten up the set screws, raise the knob to its highest position and see that the blades stand at about the same angle as when the knob is down to the lowest point. When the blades change their angle while running tighten slightly the small screw in the center pieces; these screws com- press leather washers against the cranks the blades are fastened on. Do not make them too tight, but just sufficient to allow the adjusters to work easily. Place the drip cup on the shaft, about two inches below the end of the pipe or bearing. There should be no oil on the shaft when this is placed in position. Put some beeswax in the cup and heat it with a blow lamp or pipe enough to melt the wax, and thus fill up the joint between the cup and the shaft. This will keep the oil from running through. The accumulation of waste oil should be taken out of the cups every two or three days. If you do not care to seal the cups with wax, wrap some lamp wick or cotton waste around the shaft and push it into the cup. This will absorb the waste oil; but must be replaced when it becomes saturated or the oil will run through. When the fans are erected oil thoroughly before you start them, and watch them occasionally that they do not cut their bearings and that the belts are working properly. After a few days very little attention will be required. Keep your fans clean and oiled; two or three drops on each bearing is sufficient. Just this little attention and your fans will give entire sat- isfaction. i6 The Marietta Manufacturing Co., RULES FOR CALCULATING THE SPEED OF GEARS OR PULLEYS. In calculating for gears multiply or divide by the number of teeth, as may be required. In calculating for pulleys, mul- tiply or divide by their diameter in inches. The driving wheel is called the driver and the driven wheel the driven. PROBLEM I. The revolutions of the driver and driven, and the diameter of driven being given, required the diameter of the driver. Rule. — Multiply the diameter of the driven by its number of revolutions, and divide by the number of revolutions of the driver. PROBLEM II. The diameter and revolutions of the driver being given, require the diameter of the driven to make a given number of revolutions in the same time. Rule. — Multiply the diameter of the driver by its number of revolutions, and divide the product by the required number of revolutions. PROBLEM III. The diameter or number of teeth, and number of revolu- tions of the driver, with the diameter or number of teeth of the driven being given, required the revolutions of the driven. Rule. — Multiply the diameter or number of teeth of the driver by its number of revolutions, and divide by the diameter or number of teeth of the driven. PROBLEM IV. The diameter of driver and driven, and the number of revolutions of driven being given, required the number of rev- olutions of the driver. Rule. — M ultiply the diameter of the driven by its number of revolutions, and divide by the diameter of the driver. SPECIAL NOTICE. When you order pulleys give the exact diameter of the bore you require. If for rough castings describe them thus: To bore — no finish. Marietta, Penna. J 7 A Word to Patrons. The goods illustrated on the following pages possess all the merits a varied experience of seventeen years has suggested, and for novelty and originality of design are excelled by none. We endeavor to protect ourselves and our customers by patenting all goods we handle, and we consider it one of our most pleasant duties to thank them for their liberal patronage in the past and solicit a continuance of the same in the future. We have Water Motors listed on another page- HEIGHT OF FANS FROM THE FLOOR. Heretofore the standard height of our fans has been eight feet from the floor to the bottom of the blades. We have been repeatedly asked to change this, and we have done so. All fans herein listed will be seven feet six inches from the floor to the center of the blades. This is our standard, and all orders will be so filled, unless specially and distinctly ordered otherwise. In ordering fans please state carefully, for Column Fans (if not stand- ard), the height you want the center of fan blades from the floor, and the distance from the top of the floor to the bottom of the floor joist or face of the ceiling; also the length you want the shaft to extend below the same. FOR CEILING FANS. Give height of ceiling, the kind and style of finish and, if adjusters for the blades are wanted, be careful to say so, as all fans herein listed are with “Globe,” solid carriers, and either adjusters or combination carriers for blades are special and will be charged extra. i8 The Marietta Manufacturing Co., The Kulp Champion Counter Shaft. *One-half to one horse power Electric Motor Counter shaft. Diameter of large pulley, 2ix2-inch face. Diameter of small pulley, 4 i-2x2-inch face. Double flange. This counter shaft is our latest improvement. It swivels in its base, but is held perfectly firm. It is instantly set level after the base is bolted to the ceiling, without the use of liners. And the most important of all, it will throw no oil on the ceil- ing from the hubs of the rapidly revolving pulleys. This is a feature possessed by the Champion only, and fully appreciated by those who have had their fine ceilings soiled and disfigured by machines of this kind. This style of counter shaft is much in vogue for driving small fan plants tandem, and is illustrated above, connected directly by a 1-4 twist belt; by putting an extra pulley on fan you can drive others. Marietta, Pknna. r 9 Kulp Counter Shafts. The above illustration shows our 12-inch Hanger Counter Shaft connected with a 1-4-twist belt to an upright Counter Shaft. This appliance is made up from our regular stock of fittings. The upright Counter shaft can be extended to the next floor above or below; and where so extended the shaft should be cased about six feet from the floor up. Fittings for this purpose can be furnished and are illustrated elsewhere. About twelve fans can be run by this plan. The bearings in the 12-inch hangers are reversible and ad- justable in every way, and are carried in stock at all times for 7-8-inch and 1 3- 16-inch shafting. Special sizes will be made to order at the regular prices. 20 The Marietta Manufacturing Co Kulp Floor Fountain Column Fan. PATENT APPLIED FOR.
