We hope that it may also serve as a useful reference for persons interested in China, particularly for students carrying on research in Chinese problems. It is to be noted that of the five hundred sixty-eight theses and dissertations listed one hundred fifty-two deal with problems relating to China. V The titles of the theses and dissertations included are arranged chronologically, and in alphabetical order of the names of the authors within a given year. Each title is preceded by the name of the author, the degree for which the thesis is written, and the institution by which the degree is conferred. If the thesis has been published either in full or in part, the publisher or the reference is, as far as possible, given after the title. Each title is given a number for reference to enable one to locate a title by first consulting the Index. If, for instance, one is interested in anthropology and turns to that section in the Index, he finds the three numbers, 2015, 2312, and 26w7. The title indexed 2312 can easily be found by first turning to the group of theses written in the year 1923, next to the more limited group of theses written by those whose names begin with an “L,” and then the figure “2” identifies the title as that by Li Chi on The formation of the Chinese people. In the Index, a title may of course appear under more than one subject. The economic history of China, with special reference to agriculture for instance, can be found under “Agriculture” and “China” as well as under “Economics.” The present bulletin includes every title that has been definitely ascertained; but no claim is made as to its completeness. Some of the institutions could furnish data only for the more recent years, and there are a few institutions from which we have not been able to collect the necessary information. The doctorate dissertations are more nearly complete, as such titles are more readily available than those of the master’s theses. When occasion demands, we hope to publish supplementary lists to include not only theses which will appear in the future, but also those which have been omitted in the present list. To make this possible, readers are requested to send in corrections or additions whenever discovered, and authors of theses are invited to inform us of their titles when submitting them. We shall also greatly appreciate it if they will furnish us copies of published theses or dissertations. In compiling the present bulletin we are indebted to the author¬ ities of the various educational institutions as well as to the individ¬ ual friends who have assisted us in gathering the desired informa¬ tion.
