In this cabinet the 10, 20, 30, 40 and SO foot letters are mounted on the four sides of rotating blocks. These blocks are simultaneously rotated, thereby- bringing into view a new set of letters, by pressure on a pneumatic push button, which may be placed where most convenient to the operator. The cabinet, there- fore, while occupying the wall space of one single test card, affords four changes of letters, and the mechanism is simple and positive in action. There being no electrically actuated devices the possibilities of breakdowns -are practically removed. Furthermore the apparatus may be installed anywhere without vio- lating the underwriters' regulations. The cabinet is beautifully made of mahogany (other finishes may be had on short notice) and the entire apparatus is very pleasing in appearance. The apparatus is complete with a bracket carrying lamp and reflector with the necessary connecting wire and attachment plus. 4309 Combination Pneumatic Test Type Cabinet . . . . Mechanically this cabinet is similar to the one described above, but dis- plays in addition an Astigmatic Chart and an eight-millimeter opening lighted by a separate lamp for a muscle test light. The illumination is by means of a long cylindrical reflector carrying a ten-inch tubular lamp. The cabinet is made of mahogany and is complete with the necessary wire, attachment plugj, and a three-way switch for controlling the lights separately. AI E Y R O W I T Z , X E AV \' O R K Color Perception Testing ^Apparatus 4340 Ishahara Color Plates, Complete in Book Form This interesting and novel, as well as useful, color test consists of 16 plates arranged in book form, as shown in the illustration. The test object is approximately Syi inches in diameter and is made up of colored dots of varj-ing di- ameters and colors. The two pages, at which the book is open in the illustration, show the figures 2 and 6 respective- h' in dots of various sizes and of colors that contrast with the background. These figures, 2 and 6. are not visible to people with weak color perception. The set contains charts in which the normal read one fig- ure, for instance 8. and the abnormal 3. It includes a chart on which the normal see the number 74 and the color blind 21. There are also several charts on w-hich a figure is visible to the color blind, but invisible to the normal, and several charts in which a winding line between two points on the circumfer- ence is visible to the normal, but the color defects when asked to trace a line between the same points follow an entirely different course. For a quick test and for conclusively demonstrating lack of color percep- tion, this test is exceedingly useful. It requires no technical explanation. Complete directions are printed in the book. A useful test for malingerers. $/^ 4342 4342 Jennings Self Recording Color Vision Test ..... This set consists of two color boards, as illustrated, a double compart- ment box. two lids with test skeins attached, fifty record blanks, stylus and full- directions. In making the test, a record blank is placed underneath one of the color boards and the examinee is asked to make a mark in the perforation opposite each color which in his estimation matches the test skein given him. Record, therefore, is quickly and automatically made and there is a space on the chart for the signature of the person examined. 15 E . B . M E Y R O W I T Z , N E A\' ^' O R K Malingering Tests Placido Disc F5.ISN 4352 4349 Placido disc for rapid detection of astigmatism .... 4350 Fridenberg's Test for Simulating Blindness ..... This instrument was devised to reflect the image of a test card in such a way that it can be seen by only one eye at a time, and a demonstration of vision made without the subject of examination obtaining any clue as to whicli eye is being tested. The mirror is mounted on a horizontal arm in such a way as to permit of varying its distance from the test card, and of presenting it alternately to either eye. The lateral tilt of the mirror can be changed at will, and is indi- cated by a pointer on a horizontal scale. When the pointer is at 90 degrees, the plane of the mirror is at right angles to the line of vision of the eye on the corresponding side, and this eye sees its own image. The test card on this side, however, is not normal to the mirror, and its reflection is seen only by the opposite eye, which the subject presumes to be unconcerned in the visual act, as it does not appear in the mirror. By switching the mirror over to the opposite side of the arm, a similar double test can be applied, so that in all eight variations are rapidly oljtained. The mirror can be adjusted laterally to correspond exactly with the inter- pupillary distance and correcting glasses inserted in the trial frame, if neces- sary. The test is simple, rapid and exact, gives no clue to the simulant, and can be demonstrated without theoretical explanations to the members of a commis- sion or jur}'. 4352 Snellen's Simulating Blind Test ....... Consists of a series of transparent letters "FRIEND" alternately red and green, and a pair of reversible spectacles with one red and one green lens. The subject can see the whole word with both eyes and FIN or RED with one eye, according to the glass before the eye being employed. No clue is given and confusion is easily caused by several rapid changes of the spectacles. 16 E. This is an instrument for measuring exophthalmia with accuracy and rapidity, and useful in determining the progress of such protrusion in cases of intraorbital tumor, goitre, foreign bodies and retrobulbar hemorrhage. The instrument resembles a sliding rule, each member being provided with a scale reading to 30 millimeters and two mirrors mounted at right angles and one above the other. When the instrument is in position, with the two outer points in contact with orbital margins the profile of the cornea is seen in one mirror and scale in the other. The scale reading directly above the corneal image gives its protrusion in millimeters. Readings are made of one eye at a time. The instrument is exceedingly simple to employ, and the method is one of great exactitude. The separation of the two members is shown on the slide. All measure- ments of the same case must be made with the members separated to the same reading on the sliding scale. 4710 Wesseley Keratometer ......... This instrument is used to measure quickly and accurately the diameter of the cornea or the diameter of the pupil. It may also be used for measuring the distance between the apex of the cornea and the vertex of the spectacle lens. The observer looks through the metal disc indicated by No. 1, the hard rub- ber eyepiece No. 3 resting on the orbital margin of the patient. The observer sees a scale and the eye of the patient sharply defined to permit direct reading with precision. 31 E. B. MEYROWITZ, NEW YORK Rubber Stamps RIGHT EYE. LEFT EYE. | SPH. CYL. AXIS. SPH. E. B. MEYROWITZ, NEW YORK Eye Instruments 5200 3200 McLean Tonometer . . The McLean Tonometer is a direct reading instrument. It is not neces- sary to refer to a chart or other data to get a true reading of the pressure in millimeters of mercury. The weight factor is constant. All the intra-ocular pressures (10 to 130 mm. of Hg.) are obtained with one weight. Anti-friction devices are employed wherever friction might cause a "drag" and affect the indication. Sufficient clearance is allowed between the plunger and foot-plate to pre- vent any capillary attraction of fluids remaining on the cornea when the in- strument is applied. The scale is placed at the lower part of the instrument near the foot-plate or point of application. This permits the instrument to be applied, maintained in proper position, and read by one man much more conveniently than any other instrument. This instrument is calibrated from manometer pressures, and in a way that exhaustive tests have proved absolutely accurate. The method of cali- bration has been approved by several prominent physicists and oculists in many tests on enucleated human and pigs' eyes. In a few instances tests have been made on the living human eye in situ, where it has been possible to con- nect the eye to a manometer. The workmanship and finish establish a new standard for tonometers, and are in accordance with the highly scientific character of the instrument. Each instrument is individually tested by Dr. McLean and is accompanied by a signed certificate of his approval. By invitation, Dr. McLean read a paper on tonometry before the British Ophthalmological Society. Copies of reprint on request. 5201 Schiotz Tonometer ......... MEYROWITZ, NEW YORK Suspension Apparatus 8600 Lynch Suspension Apparatus including Crane and 5 sizes of spatulae . This outfit consists essentially of the crane, which is attached, by means of a clamp, to the end of the operating table, and the suspension apparatus proper, to which the spatulae are interchangeably attachable. The crane may be raised and lowered or moved across the table by means of screws, provided for the purpose, and a clamp permits further up and down adjustment. The suspension apparatus itself is made of two members joined together so that the angle made by them is adjustable by means of a quick acting worm. Two views of this part of the apparatus are shown, showing also the method of attachment of spatulae and the opening adjustment. (The complete illustration shows an older form of suspension apparatus now discon- tinued. Details of the crane itself are correct). 109 E. B.
