KnaxyiuCpTniiL Apm 1, 1904 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN It is with pleasure that we testify to the reliability of the White Mantel & Tile Company of Knoxville, Tennessee. We have no hesitancy in saying that we believe anyone who has dealings with this firm will be treated in the fair¬ est manner possible, and that they can feel perfectly secure in sending money to them with their orders, as we understand that they ship their goods, agreeing that anything not prov¬ ing entirely satisfactory when received can be returned to them, and the money paid will be immediately refunded to the purchaser. The officers and stockholders of the Company are well and favorably known to us, and we believe can be relied upon to do exactly as they agree. Very truly yours <2 ^La c cCoj-cJ^ AVERY LIBRARY COvVV.3IA UNIVERSITY THE ADVANCE COURIER T HIS IS, in all respects, an abridged catalogue. It aims at two important things — to convince you that the White Mantel & Tile Company has decided advan¬ tages for manufacturing and selling Mantels; and that the “Royal” Line represents the very highest develop¬ ment of artistic perfection and mechanical excellence and the greatest Mantel values possible to obtain. It contains a few illustrations of the most popular designs of the “Royal” Line. Our large catalogue which is too costly for general dis¬ tribution contains the more expensive and elaborate designs. There is one thing which should appeal to you when reading and studying The Advance Courier, and that is'the fact that it deals only with plain, truthful statements and conservative claims. In this preliminary we wish to assume the defence of every statement made herein. We shall endeavor to make every statement so clear and honest as not to lead to any misapprehension about our goods, no misunderstanding as to our methods, no doubt as to our facilities for competing with any Mantel factory in the world. BUILDING THE “ROYAL” LINE Location an Advantage One of our most important advantages is location — right in the midst of the hardwood district of America. This gives us an advantage that even our competitors appreciate, that few factories enjoy—the privilege of cutting with our own mills millions of feet of the finest hardwood lumber in the country, curing it in our own yards by the slow, natural process which assures perfect material. This advantage accounts for the peculiarly rare beauty of the grain of the wood seen in the “Royal” Line Mantels, and the fact that we can and do sell our goods at a lower price than the man who has to pay transportation charges from this section to where his factory happens to be. We have given years of study to the selection and seasoning of woods and the carving of those woods into artistically designed Mantels. 3 COLUMBIA UNIVEROITY Our knowledge of Mantel manufacture has been so exact as to prac¬ tically amount to a scientific study. The result is that we see flaws or failings in the wood or the manner of fashioning that only expert eyes could detect. This ability insures to your benefit as a buyer. It keeps you from selecting something which looks all right at first but proves faulty as the years go by. It enables you to get what you ought to have, even if you do not happen to know exactly what you want. We are always pleased to do business with those who appreciate high grade goods, and you, we know, will be glad of the chance to get such goods, completely guaranteed, from us rather than pay a retailer the price which he must charge. We sell to users direct, quoting our lowest Factory Prices, and the lowest to be obtained anywhere. Lumber a Factor A most important factor in constructing the “Royal” Line Mantels is the lumber. No matter how excellent the cabinet work, how clever the carving, or how fine the finish, the result will be unsatisfactory unless the lumber is right. Wood selected for the rare beauty of its grain possesses more exquisite beauty than any carving or applied ornament that can be produced. Nature traces wonderfully beautiful lines in the product of the forest. Herein lies the value of each piece of wood. A design can be produced indefinitely, but a natural figure in wood cannot be duplicated. In this nature never repeats. No man has yet devised a process for the rapid drying or curing of lumber equal to Nature’s method. The lumber out of which the “Royal” Line is constructed is first brought to the saw mill in the log, by water, receiving the beneficial effect of the water in removing the sap. The logs are then sawed and the lumber piled on sticks in the open yard, where it remains for twelve months, becoming thoroughly seasoned and air dried. It is then placed in the kiln, where it is kept until all the dampness from the atmosphere is taken out. This makes the lumber in the “Royal” Line as near perfect as human ingenuity is capable of making it, and very superior to the lumber seasoned by the rapid methods of some manufacturers who rush the lumber from the saw mill, green, into the kiln, thereby destroying the life and beauty of the wood. Lumber treated in Nature’s way is not so susceptible to atmospheric changes, nor to heat, and will not warp, swell nor shrink, and retains a beauty and life that the rapid process of kiln-drying destroys. Expert Designing The designers of the “Royal” Line are the cleverest that money can employ. They are skillful artists, who are fully familiar with conditions which govern Mantel construction. The ruling principles of our designs are to avoid over-ornamentation, relying for decorations more on the rare figure of the wood used and high polish. We aim to have every design beautifully artistic, graceful and orig¬ inal, yet conforming with modern styles of architecture. We have such a wide variety of patterns that every fancy can be appeased. No matter how plain or how elaborate a pattern is desired, it can be found here, scrupulously perfect in every respect. The most popular designs are kept in stock. Perfect Construction The best skilled labor is employed in the construction of “Royal” Mantels. If we could possibly get better workmanship we’d do it. We insist upon mechanical perfection, and good products are proot that we get it. Many superior points in the construction of the “Royal” Line Mantels are hidden from the casual observer, but absolutely essential to work that is to stand. They are built for long service as well as beauty. Superior Finish Elegance of style and finish are aimed at. Three classes of workmen are employed in finishing — fillers, coaters and polishers. In the Filling Department the pores of the wood are filled, in order that the surface may be perfectly smooth before the first coat of varnish is applied. Then, after being thoroughly sand-papered, the Mantels pass to the Coating Department. Here the coaters give the work a coat of our special 5 varnish, the best obtainable, almost colorless, elastic and slow drying. No quick drying varnish is durable. After the first coat is thoroughly dry they are again taken to the Sand-papering Department and carefully gone over. Then, back to the Coating Department, where the second coat is applied, after which they are again sand-papered and rubbed. Now they are ready for the Flowing Room, a department built dust-proof for this purpose. Here the last coats are put on. After thoroughly drying and becoming hard, they are taken to the Rubbing Department. Here they are hand rubbed with water and pul¬ verized pumice stone until the surface is perfectly smooth. They are then taken to the last department—the Polishing Room— where the Mantels are polished with rotten-stone and hand rubbed until a brilliant, smooth, hard, durable polish is produced. The Mantels are then ready to ship. What a Mail Business Means A few years ago there were comparatively few Hardwood Mantels used—few in comparison with the present production. The cause ? They were too expensive. Mantel manufacturers had to keep salesmen on the road, dealers were compelled to tack on a good sized profit or it wouldn’t pay them to handle them. Quality had to be slighted. Designs were more simple and styles were fewer. It was our President, Mr. J. C. White who first saw the practicab¬ ility of selling Mantels by mail. The plan was tried. It proved a won¬ derful success. The result was better and more beautiful Mantels at prices within the reach of all classes. It meant to the manufacturer less advertising expense, cash sales, hence no dead accounts; larger business, consequently cheaper production. It means to you a choice from our factory’s entire production, no profits for the wholesaler, jobber and retailer; easy selection from the “Royal” Line catalogue where descriptions are perfect and illustrations clear. It means that you, anybody, can buy the finest Mantels the world produces—the “Royal” Line—-at Factory Cost—plus one small profit. We Guarantee Them The “Royal” Line is sold under a guarantee that covers every point —material, construction, newness of design, finish and safe delivery. 6 If, after careful inspection, any article is found not as represented in all details of material, construction, workmanship and finish, it is your privilege to return the goods at our expetise, and the amount paid will in¬ stantly be refunded in full. And while you are thus made absolutely safe in a purchase with a guarantee like this, we feel equally safe, because we, on our part, subject our wares to the closest scrutinity after they are made and again before they are shipped, and nothing but the most unfortunate combination of circumstances could result in defective goods leaving the factory. We also guarantee delivery in good condition, as far as your freight depot. All goods shipped C. O. D. are shipped in our name, we sending the freight receipt, with invoice, to your bank. The latter then collects the money and holds it three days, during which time you examine the goods in your own home. And if at the end of the three days you are not entirely satisfied, you can ship the goods back, charges collect, and go to the bank and get the full amount you paid. Could any other arrangement be fairer? Advantages of Buying the “Royal” Line A choice from a variety of patterns unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Lowest factory price—lowest price to be obtained anywhere. You need pay no dealer a profit. Every purchase goes direct to our customer from our factory, brand new. This advantage obviates the danger you run when buying shop¬ worn, old-style, or out-of-date styles from a dealer. Our goods are zenith of quality and style—the finest possible. Cus¬ tomers can feel that they are getting strictly high grade Mantels for the least money. Pictures in our catalogues are all actually from photographs. It is impossible, however, to show the beauty of coloring, elegance of finish and exquisite grain or “flake” of the woods used. Being located in the Mantel centre of the world, we secure the best designers, the newest and latest designs, the most conscientious workman¬ ship, and the choicest lumber from the world’s finest forests. Information for Buyers. There is such a difference in Mantels that we suggest—never com¬ pare prices without comparing quality. You will always find more differ¬ ence in the latter than in the former. Our terms for the “Royal” Line are so liberal and our guarantee so strong that you run absolutely no risk in ordering from us. The prices we quote herein are net for the goods free on board cars at Factory. These are our lowest Factory Prices and cash or satisfactory reference should accompany all orders. The greatest care is used in packing, and to avoid anxiety and trouble on the customer’s part, we guarantee safe delivery to his freight station. No extra charge for packing or cartage. Mantels are made and carried in stock as per description under each illustration. For any change from regular stock woods, finishes or sizes there will be an extra charge which will be quoted upon application. Other Important Information The “Royal” Line doesn’t include Mantels only. It includes Grates, Tiles, Grilles and Fret Work. We will be glad to give estimates on anything in these lines. We guarantee these goods just as strongly as we do our Mantels. The prices are just as low—the rock bottom factory prices. If there is no design shown in this Advance Courier that suits your needs, don’t hesitate to ask for our large catalogue which covers the more elaborate and expensive designs. It is a very elaborate affair, and, of course, too costly to distribute freely, but we will be glad to send one to any intending purchaser. If you can’t decide on the design you like, by all means get the large catalogue. 8 White Mantel and Tile Co., Knoxville, Term. Vandalia, III., Feb. 19, 1904. When I placed the order I wrote you how I expected to finish the hardwood in the room where the mantel was to be placed, and while the mantel did not reach us until after the parties were through and gone, it matched the finished wood as well as could have been had they all been finished at one time by the same workmen. I got prices from at least a dozen mantel dealers and manufacturers and found that your price was a great deal lower than any of¬ fered. In fact in some instances the price asked was more than double your price and from the dimensions and specifications in the catalogues there did not seem to be any difference in the goods. Well, I finally bought of j r ou, and when the mantels came, I believe they are just as good as could be made. The wood¬ work was finished to perfection, and the glass, grates and tile were fine. The directions were plain so that it was a simple matter to place the mantels and grates in position and we are more than satisfied with our bargain. We have compared them with mantels in many of the best houses in the city, and we have seen no mantels that we like so well. Yours truly, W. F. Murphy. 44 No. 261. The continued use and increasing sales of our “Royal” mounted grate throughout the country, and especially in the colder climates has proven that it is the most economical , practical and satisfactory fire¬ place made. It has the advantage over the regular common brick setting in that it is—a complete grate all mounted ready for setting. It requires no fire brick or fire tile in setting. It can be set by any mason. It over-comes imperfect chimneys. It prevents smoky chimneys and puffing of smoke into the room. The dampers can be operated from the front so as to control the fire. By opening the lower damper which is directly over and close to the fire, it forms a strong direct draft, which as soon as it heats the flue, forms a rapid current of air, thus carrying off the dense smoke. When the fire is well under way the lower damper can be closed, the upper one remaining open. The heat is then reflected into the room. The dampers can be closed tight when not in use, preventing dust or soot from entering the room. The “ Royal” Ranks first among Portable Grates and Fire-places. The leading features of this grate wherein it excels all others are: Its curved corrugated top which reflects the heat into the room. Improved method of operating upper damper (with thumb-screw) which permits it to be opened any desired width without danger of dropping. Damper attachments are of Malleable Iron. It has double basket front with extra wide space between them, which allows the ashes to fall behind the screen. It also has: Damper in both basket front and ash screen whereby fire can be kept under control an indefinite period, same as a stove. Fire pot is full lined with fire tile to a height that will protect back from live coals. The tile can be renewed without removing the grate The shaker head is of malleable iron. The grate bottom, besides freeing itself of ashes when being operated, opens up the fire and does not jar the grate from position. All parts are extra heavy and so constructed as not to be easily burned or warped, and can be readily renewed if necessary. In no other grate on the market can there be found such a combination of desirable and up-to-date features and thoroughly good heating capacity as in the Royal. 48 II es, Fret Work and Division Screens Before placing your order for Grilles, Fret Work or Division Screens, send us the exact measurements of the openings for which you want them, indicating the kind of w'ood work and finish.
