FIRE LIMITS. By a recent act of the Legislature, the Fire limits of this city ere extended so as to include a large section before exempted from their o|ieration. Under the new law, tiiey ex'end from the East River, near Uivington-street, in an irregular line, noriliwesterly, to between Twenty-first and Twenty-second street, on the Second Avenue ; thence woat to the Sixth Avenue, and then coniinue io an irregular line south-easterly, to the Hudson River, near Ham- ersley-street. FiaE DISTRICTS. The city is divided into five Fire Districts, which are indicated by the striking of the City Hall bell as follows : 1st District— One stroke of the bell. 2<1 District— Two do do. 3d District— Three do do. 4th District — Four do do. 5th District — A continual ringing, The first District is comprehended by a line from the foot of Murray street to the City Hall, and in a line parallel with the North River to 21ststreet. The second District is bounded by the latter line, and astraight lino from the Hall, to the 3d Avenue at 21st street. The third District is bounded by the lattei and a line from the Citv Hall, to the East River above the Dry Dock. T^he fourth District is bounded by the latter, and comprehendg all the space between that and the East River, as far down an Frankfurt street. The fifth District is all that part of the city, below Frankfort End Murray-streets. 14 COACHES AND CARRIAGES, PERRIES. Which are leased by the Corporation to different companiei and individuals, and from which a revenue is derived of about $10,000. From foot of Fulton-st. to Brooklyn, distance half a mile. From foot of Catherine-st., to do. do. half a mile. From foot of Walnut St., to do. do. half a mile. From footof Whitehall-8t.,to do. do. one mile. From foot of Grand-st., to Williamsburg do. half a mile. From foot of Peck-slip, to do. do. 1^ miles. From foot of Cortlandi-st., to Jersey City, about a mile. From foot of Errrclay-st., to Hoboken, about two miles. From foot of Canal-st , lo do. do. H miles. From foot of Christopher-st. to do. do- 1^ miles. From foot of Canal-st., to Bull's Ferry, about sis miles, thence four miles further to Fort Lee. COACHES AND CARRIAGES. Rates of Chai'gins, ^c.--For conveying a passenger any dis- tance not exceeding one mile, thirty-seven and a half cents ; and for every additional passenger twenty-five cents. For conveying a passenger any distance exceeding a mile, and within two miles, fifty cents ; and for every additional passenger, twenty-five cents. For the use of a hackney coach or carriage by the day, with one or more passengers, five dollars. For the use of a hackney coach or carriage, by the hour, with one or more passengers, with the privilege of going from p!nce to place, and of slopping as often as may be required, as follows, viz. for the first hour, one dolli-.r, for Ihe second hour, seventy-five cents, and for every succeeding hour fifty cents. For children between Uvo aud fourteen years of age, half price only to be charged ; and for children under two years of age no charge is to be made. Whenever a hackney coach or carriage shall be detained, the owner or driver shall be allowed after the rate of seventy-five cents for an hour: thirty-seven and a half cents for each and every sub- sequent hour, and so in proportion for any part of the first subse- quent hours, which the same may be so detained. Every driver or owner of a hackney coach or carriage, shall carry and convey in and upon his coach or carriage, in addition 10 the person or persons therein, one trunk, valise, saddle bag or carpetbag, portmanteau, box, bundle, basket, or other articles used in travelling, if he be required so to do, without charge or eompensauon li^ieieior ; but for every trunk or other such article KATES OF CARTAGE, &C. 15 as above named, more than one, he shall be entitled to demand and raceive the sum of six cents, if conveyed within the distance of one mile, and if more than a mile, the sum of twelve and a balf cents. RATES OF CARTAGE. For any distance not exceeding half a mile, for all ordinary loads, 31 cents ; for hides, cut stone, coal, hollow-ware, oysters, &e. ; for pipes and hogsbeads, 100 gallons and over, and other heavy loads ; fur household furniture, &;c., an extra charge, accor- ding to the articles and dimensions. In all cases where the distance exceeds half a mile and not two miles, half in addition to be allowed. PUBLIC PORTERS' FEES. On a wheel barrow. — For any distance not exceeding half a mile, 13^ cents. Over half a mile, and not exceeding a mile, 25 cents, and in that proportion for any greater distance. On a hand cart. — Any distance not exceeding half a mile, 18| eents. Over half a mile, and not exceeding a mile 314 cents, and in that proportion for any greater distance, J)5"Complaint8 for extra charging, or violating of the laws in regard to Hackney Coachmen, Cartmen and Porters, are usually made to the Mayor, or the Corporation Attorney. CITY STAGES. The following Stages run constantly every day, (Sundays ex- cepted,) from Wall-street: — Forty-two Broadway Stages, to Bleccker and Fourteenth-sts, and Union-square. Twenty-five Greenwich Stages, to Twenty-first-street, near the North River. Fifleen Dry-Dock Stages, to Dry-Dock, EastKiver. Eleven Bowery Stages, to Fourteenth-slreet and Third-avenuo Fare, generally, 12^ cents. Several Stages, in addition to the above, run several times a day, each, from the corner of the fiowery and Bayard-st., for Yorkville, 5 miles,. , .. Fare I8| cents. Manhattanville, do., do. 25 do. Harltem, 7^ miles, do. 25 do. Total number of licensed Stages, 93, which pay, for a stage drawn by four horses, $20 ; and for two horses, $10 each, when Ueen8«d annually.
