This should be checked with the material immediately and if any shortage exists we will, upon being notified, make correction, providing such notice is given us before you start to erect the ceiling. Study the plan carefully, verify the measurements and as this plan is made strictly in accordance with the measurements and information furnished us, and ample allowance is made for cutting, laps and waste, any additional materials required on account of incorrect information or measurements, or changes in measurements, will be charged for extra. burring strips must be used when applying metal ceiling or side wall direct to joists or over plaster. When applying over sheathing, furring strips are not necessary. When applying the furring strips, strike a chalk line from both ends of the room, to be used as your "starting line” from which to work. When furring for continuous plates, the first strip is placed on the “starting line” and at right angles with the joists, placing the additional strips parallel and 12 inches apart, or in case of the plaster being loose, it is best to strip every six inches, then the cross furring or headers at the laps of the plates, which would be every 48 inches or 9G inches, as the case may be. It is essential that the furring strips be applied exactly to the center of the nailing points on every plate, as indicated on the plan. It is not always necessary to have special furring for the cornice, but the wall line should be straight and furring applied to the ceiling and wall to which the brackets for the cornice are nailed. Brackets to fit the cornice are furnished, one for every 4-foot section and two for each miter. Work should be commenced in the rear and brought forward when possible. Stripping should be leveled and with this done the field plates should be applied first. The border or molding should be next applied, taking care to leave the outer edge of the mold un-nailed. The filler is next applied, lapping one edge under the molding, which outer edge is then nailed. The cor- nice is then put up, lapping over the outer edge of the filler, thus completing the ceiling. We furnish square inside and outside miters for nearly all our cornices. For those for which we make no miters we send sufficient material for the erector to make plain miters. «• Our ceilings are printed one coat of light gray paint on both sides. We ini lude wood brackets for cornice and nails for erection. Wood furring strips are never provided unless ordered special and then they at ( Charged for e! Practically the same instructions apply for furring side walls. In cases where wainscot is used, t MH^^nscot is applied first and then the wall plate, working from the bottom up to the edge of the cornice. On November 11, 1914, an exhaustive test was conducted by Prof. Jas. S. McGregor, M. S., at the Columbia University Fire Testing Station at Green Point, Brooklyn, with a view to determining the relative values of Steel Ceiling and Plaster as fire resisting wall coverings. The specially built reinforced concrete building used for conducting the tests contained six different panels, two plaster and four Metal Ceilings, specified in the following manner: — Plaster on wood lath; plaster on metal lath; Metal Ceiling on wood furring; Metal Ceiling on metal covered furring; Metal Ceiling on J^-inch wood sheathing; Metal Ceiling on wood furring and plaster boards nailed to wood beams. At the end of the test which lasted exactly one hour and ten minutes, and during which a temperature of 1,700 degrees was reached, the following decisions were rendered by the in- spectors in the order of their superiority: No. 1 Metal Ceiling on plaster boards and wood furring. No. 2 Metal Ceiling on inch sheathing. No. 3 Plaster on metal lath. No. 4 Metal Ceiling on metal covered wood furring. No. 5 Metal Ceiling on wood furring No. 6 Plaster on wood lath The Plaster Ceiling on Wood Lath fell twelve MINUTES AFTER THE START OF THE FIRE. This decision has served to establish beyond a doubt the supremacy of Metal Ceilings as a fire retardant wall covering.
