CcfQpliraenb 9^ 74 I as N this, my twenty-first year, it has occurred to me to ascertain, for my own satisfaction and for the information of my countless friends, just to what extent the pioneer of all typewriters outnumbers the combined forces of com- petition in New York City — the headquarters of effort. For the past sixteen years attempt after attempt has been made to displace me in the estimation of the public, each succeeding year producing more than its predecessor of would-be rivals. Many have fallen by the wayside. Of the survivors, not less than twenty-six different makes are to-day represented in the New York market — Remington and twenty-five other styles. In the following pages I shall deal with the twenty-five competing machines collectively, under the title ''AH Others.'' A complete census of writing machines in use in New York City is impracticable ; but, in view of the prevailing tendency to concentration of business in the large office buildings, an accounting of the conditions therein existing will serve to reflect the sentiment of the community* REMINGTON STANDARD TYPEWITER 327 Broadway^ New York, September, 1395.
