The leisurely charm and naive grace of that age are well expressed in this reproduction, recently installed in our showrooms. FOREWORD PART I q/HE generous appreciation and acceptance accorded to its predecessor, "A Book of Old English Designs”, has encouraged us to publish this enlarged, more complete edition. As in the first volume, the aim is to widen the appreciation and use of Old English plastic motives with both architects and public. Our problem, as we see it after more than thirty-seven years of happy endeavor in our chosen craft, is more than mere mechanical perfeaion in the execution of the orders and contracts with which we are favored. We are conscious of a responsibility to the tradition of the long succession of plaster workers, by whom the art of plaster was developed, from the early, primitive parge work of Elizabethan England through the intricacies of 18th Century design. In recreating notable examples of the work of these master crafts¬ men, we have always felt it our duty, first to choose with taste and discrimination the models to follow, and then to reproduce so faithfully the detail and spirit of the original designs as to make it difficult to differentiate between replicas and originals. As in the past, we are publishing this book in the hope that it may be of inspirational, as well as of praaical, value. JACOBSON & COMPANY 4 JACOBSON & COMPANY Suggestion for Tudor house exterior. Cast cement ornament set in stucco to reproduce 17th Century hand modeled stucco. Ornament from our Book of Old English Designs. JACOBSON & COMPANY 5 MONO the Elizabethan and Tudor houses still extant in England CEMENT PARGETING are many examples illustrating the possibilities of ornament in exterior design. In recent years American architects have used this rough, almost primitive type of modeling, in small houses with rare effect. Originally the figures were hand-modeled in place by the plaster workers of the period. Today the same effect can be achieved more simply and cheaply by casting the ornament in cement for insertion in stucco. The possibilities for interesting variety of detail in this treatment are almost unlimited. Sometimes a frieze can be introduced over a doorway, a design under a prominent gable, or sometimes just a few figures introduced, apparently at random, in the surface of the stucco. All of the designs listed in this catalogue can be cast in cement for exterior use at prices somewhat higher than those listed for plaster reproduction. Our estimating department is always glad to figure costs of specific designs, or to give the approximate cost of this treat¬ ment when the size of the areas is indicated. All Prices Based on Ornaments in Plaster Cement Prices on Application 6 JACOBSON & COMPANY ORNAMENTAL WALL SURFACE This plaster wall surface, composed of parge ornaments, arranged geometrically, is one method of obtaining an interesting background. The relief of the ornament is sufficiently low to make it practical. An effective example of this may be seen in our new showrooms. In the past, the surfaces above rooms were too often left bare and unappealing. In contrast to the variety and color of walls and floors, as well as the carefully reproduced or genuine antique furniture and accessories. All the great European periods of design had their characteristic ceiling treatments. This is especially true of the English periods— Elizabethan, Tudor, William and Mary, Queen Anne and Georgian —the styles which people of culture have recently favored in the plan¬ ning and decoration of their homes. In most of these styles ornamental plaster ceilings are almost necessary to preserve the spirit of the whole. And what rich, warm rooms can be created through the use of appropriate ceiling decoration! Here pictured are a few of the authentic, geometric ceilings which it has been our privilege to re¬ create from famous originals, in some cases preserved in British museums. Each is a pure example of the period it represents, and each can be adapted by our staff designers and draftsmen to rooms of any dimensions. Bibliography 'Tn English homes. Imitation is perhaps the wrong word to use. In the real beauty of its grain, the century-old color and mellowness it possesses, Woodkast, when finished, simulates genuine paneling, either new or old, in any open grained wood, with startling likeness. In one case, where genuine old wood paneling was not of sufficient length to cover entirely a certain room, Woodkast panels were made to supply the deficiency. Today, after several years, it is almost impossible to tell where the real wood paneling stops and where the Woodkast begins, so accurately has the grain and color of the wood been matched. This material has been developed with the needs of modern fireproof construction in mind. It is absolutely non-inflammable—disintegrates under blow-torch test only where the blue flame touches the cast. It is hard and yet resilient. Under equal conditions of usage it proves as dura¬ ble as wood. In cost, Woodkast makes possible enormous savings. It figures one-third to one-quarter the cost of carved wood paneling, and often makes possible a wood-carved effea when the cost of genuine hand-carving would be prohibitive. Woodkast has come into widest use, however, in replacing wood wainscoting where fire laws do not permit the use of real wood regardless of cost. For radiator grilles, organ screens, window display backgrounds, too, it is practical and effective. We have on hand, ready to use, a number of designs, many of them reproduced from authentic examples of fine old wood carving. In addition, new models can be made up for a nominal charge. This, in case we have nothing in hand that will exactly suit the job. Woodkast paneling can be supplied with any width stile desired, so that the panels illus¬ trated in this booklet can be evenly spaced into a room of any dimensions by varying the width of the stile. As each room presents special conditions, shop drawings are furnished as a guide. After it is installed and thoroughly dried, a thin coat of white shellac must be applied, and thereafter it is treated in the same manner as wood. In our New York showrooms are several distinguished examples of wall paneling and ceil¬ ing beams done in Woodkast to simulate old wood. Your inspection at any time is cordially invited. We have cast and finished a number of Woodkast samples, one of which we will gladly forward on request. JACOBSON & COMPANY 45 WQDDKAST A striking example of room paneled to the ceiling with Woodkast.
