DECORATIVE DEPARTMENT TheSherwin-WilliamsCo. 601 CANAL R.OAD, CLEVELAND, OHIO A Living-Room of the Most Attractive Type I N THIS living-room there is an atmosphere of restfulness that only the soft buff wall in combination with the brown tone of the woodwork can impart. The use of the green and lavender in furnishings makes the room modern, as these shades are favored this season by the decorators and much used in the new fabrics. The combination of the odd pieces of furni- ture shows that just as attractive results can be s. cured with inexpensive furnishings if the general style of the ’o cm its dec- oration, etc., are kept free of pretentious display. The charm of the room is further increased as the walls are finished with Flat-tone which gives the clean flat tint to the wall and forms an excellent background for the furnishings. The effect of S-W Handcraft Stains on the woodwork of the home is fully shown here. The stain is clear and transparent, bringing out the grain of the wood and retaining its woody tex- ture. Any number of surface treatments are possible over these stains, but some surface finish is necessary. Complete instructions will be furnished upon request. Wall and plaster board as well as ceiling (matched boarding) is being used for the walls of the home over which paper, but more pleasingly, canvas can be applied. The Flat-tone wall finish is possible over the canvas or muslin and the seams of the bro- ken wall surface will not be evident. The moulding produc- ing the panels adds to the general character and can be used as well when the walls are finished in plaster. By keeping wood- work and furniture in the same shades as wall, a novel and unusual treatment is secured. The strong color in the hang- ings and pottery is quite necessary with the predominating green tone. The floor tone must be neutral to avoid a promi- nent second color. The furniture illustrated is inexpensive. It can be purchased in the white and stained to matchwood- work. All these features are greatly enhanced by the tasteful wall decoration. The rich, but restful green wall- finish blended from the wainscoting line to the moulding, pro- duces an atmosphere of refinement and comfort. This artis- tic wall-finish (Flat-tone System) is non-fading, does not wear off, and can be frequently washed. It is easily applied to rough or smooth plaster, canvas, etc., and is made up in a vari- ety of colors, as pleasing as the green shown. New furniture can now be purchased, patterned after the old Colo- nial pieces, which are at the present time, a rarity on the mar- ket, so that much of the newness of the room can be easily counteracted. Ivory wood and mahogany furniture in the living-room requires a yellow wall, and the combination of yel- low, rich red and the light ivory, as shown by the Colonial liv- ing-room, gives an excellent idea of the attractive results se- cured through the use of simple, but well-selected finishes. The wreath and torch border applied in one color, is purely Colo- nial. The Flat-tone System Finish of the lower wall repeating the stencil color, harmonizes with the ceiling and drop tint and introduces just enough variation to make the room refined and restful in appearance, although the wall-color itself, is high keved . Dining-room furnishings are prac- tically standard, so that your room may almost be a duplicate of your neighbor's unless you plan carefully. While the blue wall is not always the most happy color for the dining-room— for some shades appear cold under artificial light — under cer- t lin conditions, it is far more artistic than the much used brown, butt and tan that are always combined with the dark heavy styles of furniture. If the room is well lighted, a good ceiling color selected, and a pleasing frieze or border decoration intro- duced, the Mat-tone System Effect Finish in blue can be used with just as attractive results, as illustrated, by the dining- room under consideration. A solid blue wall is avoided, as the System Finish can be so applied that a light tint at the upper part of the wall can blend into a deeper, richer tone at the lower. Frice, $0.20 Plate F — Modern Hall in Flemish T HIS illustration shows a pleasing arrangement of en- trance to hall and stairway, in the modern home. To avoid a bare effect, where little furniture was to be used, and the dimensions were large, a rather low toned color-scheme was decided upon. Flat-tone Buff Stone and Cocoanut Brown, in combination with the rich brown tones of furniture, wood and furnishings, produce the hospitable and inviting atmos- phere that is so necessary in the hall. The introduction of the chair-rail, making a lower wall- color possible, apparently lowers the height of the ceiling, and increases the width of the hall. This is always true with hori- zontal wall divisions, so that they must be avoided in the ex- tremely low-ceilinged room. The green introduced in the stencil, repeats the general color-scheme of the living-room beyond, and thus brings about harmony. As the Flat-tone wall-finishes are made up in the rich dark tints, as well as the light dainty shades — -suitable for chambers the entire home can be decorated along sanitary lines. True, the kitchen above all things, must be practical, so that finishes which are readily affected by steam and moisture, are out of the question. The two kitchens illustrated show the possibilities of simple, but well-chosen color treatments that could be duplicated without much labor and expense. Part (1) shows an Enameloid finish for an entire wall, ceiling and woodwork. This material dries with a gloss, and can be kept clean with the least labor. Part (2) shows the use of both the Enameloid and Flat-tone, a dado of the former, making a kitchen just as practical as the first, for the lower wall receives most wear. The upper wall and ceiling in the Hat, produces a room that will meet the preference of the housewife, who is averse to the gloss wall-tints. The stencil above the dado line is not necessary in the kitchen, but is attractive. Cabinets, tables, chairs, etc., can be kept clean by frequent coats of S-W Family Paint. The importance of the wall-color and its decoration in a room is clearly shown by the illustration where the Wistaria border plays an important part in the general appearance of the room. The hangings and rug were selected to harmonize with the decoration, and both are designed with the Wistaria pattern. The gray-blue walls are in harmony with the gray woodwork and furniture finish, but offset by the warm rose tint of the Wistaria border. This scheme is excellent for the sunny room, but can be as effec- tively used in the north chamber. The Bath The white Flat-tone wall as shown, is sanitary in surface, as well as appearance, and attractive with the touch of rose introduced by the stencil border, thus combining chamber and bath schemes. The general decorative effect of the room could be easily secured in any chamber, even though the window- seat recess is lacking. A long box, very useful in the girls’ room, could be built under the window or windows, and cov- ered with a figured radium cloth, while the walls, if unfinished, can be decorated with the Mat-tone as specified. If the walls are papered, the covering can be easily removed before paint- ing with Flat-tone, thus securing as sanitary a finish as is pos- sible in the new home. The application of this wall-finish is, however, not impractical, directly over the wall-paper, if it has not become loosened from the plaster. Two coats of Flat-tone are usually sufficient to produce the right result over such a surface, while three coats are necessary on the new walls, or those freed from any finish or covering. The pure white enamel can be used over new or old wood, while Floorlac Eight Oak, can be substituted for the Mar-not Floor Finish specified, if the door requires refinishing, and is not in good condition. The simplicity of the wall-finish, against which the figured hangings and upholstered chair show up to best advantage, gives the room added charm. The feminine touches arc shown in the waste-paper basket, covered with the figured material of hangings, in cushion for wicker stool, light shades, table and chiffonier covers, etc., that are all easily made at little expense. Brighten Up Enamel will refinish old oak fur- niture so that the dainty effect of the room can be maintained. The application of a coat of S-W Enamel Ground will cover up the old paint and produce the proper foundation for the enamel finish. The painted furniture is excellent with the enameled beds as well as up to date. The various shades of Flat-tone do not fade as readily ynll '' around the pictures as wall-papers. This is particularly true of the warmer tints, such as yellows, tans and browns. The greatest advantage of the Flat-tone finish over wall-paper, however, is the fact that it can be readily cleaned with soap and water, and is therefore in every way sanitary. You can easily remove the wall-paper in any of your chambers and finish the walls with Flat-tone. Our decorators will prepare other color - schemes upon request. The house illustrated is developed from the Colonial, anil similar in many respects to the well-kept farm- houses that are found here and there in country and suburbs. There is much that is commendable about the home. It has a substantial dignified appearance, though siding, wood shin- gles and simple type of trim have been used, all less expensive than other materials such as brick, cement, etc., that are em- ployed for construction. The light body with stained roof and green shutters is not only appropriate, but practical. In finishing roof shingles, the right color is necessary and the shin- gle must be protected from wear. Up-keep Finishes for the Interior ©De J)ECORA.TTVE DEPAI^TCNT 6C1 CANAL ROAD CIEVELAND.O. Plate S — Up-keep Finishes for the Interior Water-Tank and Pipes — The water- tank and pipes in the home can be kept free from rust, and leakage prevented by coating each season with S-\Y Brighten Up Aluminum Paint. If rust has gathered, remove and apply a coat of S-\Y Galvanized Iron Primer before the Aluminum coat is used. Mahogany Table — An old table can be finished with one coat of S-\Y Brighten Up Stain Mahogany. Light Oak can be easily changed to Mahogany. Apply the material with a stiff brush to suggest the grain. A very old dark surface requires an under-coating of the Brighten Up Ground. Other wood shades can be obtained. Screen Door — Keep the screen door in good condition and protect it from decay by using one ccat of S-W Brighten Up Screen Enamel; black for the wire filling which will prevent rust, and green for the frame itself. If the old paint or var- nish on the frame has blistered, remove before applying the green coat. Writing-Desk — Pieces of furniture such as a writing-desk, table, chairs, etc., can be refinished to match the white enamel woodwork by painting with S-\Y Brighten Up Enamel Pure White. As the Enamel covers well, two-coat work at the most will be sufficient, on even a very dark surface. Remove all grease and sand lightly. Apply a coat of S-W Enamel Ground, producing a proper foundation for S-W Enamel Pure White. This should be flowed on evenly. If a trifle too heavy, thin with pure spirits turpentine. Picture-Frames — You can easily renew the tarnished picture-frame by applying a coat of S-W Brighten Up Im- perial Gold Enamel. Scrape off all loose paint and apply with a good stiff brush in order to get dow'n into the carving of the frame. Refrigerator — Keep the refrigerator neat and practical when the finish becomes shabby, as it will through constant use, by painting each season with a coat of S-W Brighten Up Family Paint. The material is ready for application and should be applied w r ith a bristle-brush. S-W Family Paint, Buff, is so near the original color of most refrigerators that one coat will give good results, although two coats will give an excellent finish. Allow sufficient time between coats for thorough drying. Touch up worn spots and apply a coat of the material as it comes from the can. Clothes- Reel — The clothes-reel looks neat and attractive. It was made so with a coat of SWP, the red and light yellow giving a good combination. As the clothes-reel is not fin- ished to stand much weathering, it will be best to apply one coat of SWP each season. Two coats will be necessary over a badly worn surface. The Carriage — When the paint on the carriage blisters, refinish with S-W Buggy Paint. The surface should be free from grease and old finishes lightly sanded to remove blisters. The paint which is ready for application should be flowed on with a soft bristle-brush. The combination in red and green is serviceable as well as attractive. Porch Floor — The porch floor can be kept in good con- dition with a frequent coat of S-W Porch and Deck Paint. We all know how difficult it is to keep a porch looking clean if the finish is old. The paint is easily applied, is durable, will not show wear readily, and will withstand much moisture as well as heat. Two coats are satisfactory for old work. Iron Fence — The iron fence is an expensive addition to the home, and should, therefore, be well preserved. S-W Metalastic Black will improve the looks of the fence greatly as well as keep the same free from rust. Two coats are adv ised, three are better. Lawn Swing — After the lawn swing has been allowed to remain outdoors all Summer, it should be painted before another season comes around. If one coat of S-W Porch and Lawn Furniture Enamel is applied, the lumber will be preserved from decay and the swing kept in good condition. Green is a practical color. The Hose-Reel — The hose-reel is exposed to severe wear, but can be kept in good condition with a coat of S-W Buggy Paint, Cart Red. The paint should be applied, thinning with pure spirits turpentine if necessary. The wheels and iron frame can be finished with a coat of S-W Metalastic Black. This is especially true with the all-shingled house, and when a light gray stain is employed, an exception- ally artistic effect is secured. The stain gives the necessary dressing to the surface, prolonging the life of the shingle greatly. S-YV Preservative Shingle Stains are made up in good light col- or-, as well as the rich heavy tints, and, as they are non-fading, there is no possibility of the color-scheme becoming weak A bright appearance is shown by the house illustrated, inasmuch as the green has been introduced on the shutters and the white on the sash. Gray always takes on the hue of the bright col- ors, with which it may be combined, so that the reds, warm yel- lows and greens should be introduced in the landscape.
