The question, however, frequently arises as to what are the most suitable colors and what is the most pleasing combination of shades to use. This little book of suggestions has been gotten up in response to this demand, and we trust the suggestions herein will prove of value to our many friends and customers. In the selection of the houses, we have aimed at securing what we think would represent the average country and city home, rather than the selection of the palatial residence that would make a pretty picture, which does not of itself offer any suggestions that would be of service. By consulting our color card it will be seen that many color schemes can be selected equally as attractive as those shown herein. If the color schemes or suggestions offered herein do not meet your requirements, we would be pleased to have you address our Art Department, giving them a general description of the house or building to be painted and, they will be pleased to submit special suggestions or color schemes peculiarly fitted for the conditions given. 3 B- ■0 Satisfactory Bt#isu|ts r Etc. S ATISFACTORY RESULTS in the application of any finish is secured only by following closely the directions given. These directions are the result of many years of experience and close observation and attention should be paid to them. For these directions and point¬ ers relative to any of our finishes, we refer you to our color cards. For high-class work and where special conditions are to be met, we recommend the employment of a practical painter. His years of experience will indicate how particular sur¬ faces should be treated in order to secure the most pleasing and satisfactory results. By following closely these simple directions and pointers, the result will be a source of satisfaction to you and a credit to us. Jones & Dillingham. B- -0 J & D Liquid Pulufs W E FEEL that a reference to the superlative merits of J & D Liquid Paint is almost imper¬ ative in connection with this book of schemes. Any decorative effect of paint is of little value unless accompanied by those qualities that bespeak durability, covering capacity and wood preservation. We have no hesitancy in claiming that J & D Paint has these qualities in the highest degree. The combination of White Lead and Zinc, thoroughly ground in Pure Linseed Oil, under expert supervision, has provided in J & D Paint a protective coating that has successfully withstood any test imposed by the climate of the Northwest. Realizing that we could not expect to secure and maintain the confidence of the dealer and consumer except by offering the best that the art of paint making could produce, we have no hesitancy in offering J & D Liquid Paint to the most exacting. m J & D Shingle Stains Complete Your House ^SIDE from the preservative effect of a properly prepared stain on shingles, the decorative effect amply repays the expense involved and materially increases the sale value of a property. J & D Shingle Stains perform this dual function in an ideal manner. We have utilized enough Wood Creosote to obtain the penetrating and wood tanning result distinctive of this product, in combination with Pure Linseed Oil, which, while temper¬ ing the caustic effect of the Creosote on the tinting colors used, thereby affording permanent shades, still retains its property of oxidizing into a film, practically a subsurfacing film, in the pores of the rough shingles or undressed lumber, turning water perfectly, and avoiding the transverse ridges across the interstices, which are an objection to a surface or paint coat¬ ing on shingles. J & D Shingle Stains prevent dry rot and materially lengthen the life of the roof. J & D Shingle Stain colors are permanent. J & D Shingle Stains are made in soft, velvety tones, contrasting harmoniously with the natural colors of surrounding vegetation. J & D Liquid Paint J & D Liquid Paint J & D Dulltone ~~) ECENT usage for Interior Decoration in modern houses has turned largely from water -L v. colors for the plastered walls to Flat Wall Finishes, and J & D Dulltone is one of the finest examples of this material that has been produced. J & D Dulltone is ground in a varnish vehicle, giving it a permanent finish, impervious to injuries from water, from rubbing or from contact with furniture, which so easily effect water color finishes. Dulltone is durable, sanitary, washable, and is put up in shades to meet the most critical demands for harmonious interior decoration. The following are color scheme suggestions for different rooms, which are shown merely to give you an idea of the possibilities of Dulltone decoration. The range of application and color combinations is limited only by special conditions and individual tastes. COMPLETE COLOR CARDS MAY BE OBTAINED FROM THE DEALER OR BY APPLICATION TO US 32 The Living Room TS INTENDED for a harmony in sienna tones. The colors would be suitable with almost any interior trim, except perhaps mahogany, and with any finish in oak furniture from the dark green stained to the light fumed. The walls show Dulltone No. 13; the frieze shows Dulltone No. 2 and the ceiling White. J & D Oil Stain, in Royal Brown or Walnut, on the woodwork, would give effect shown if used on new wood. A dull finish, on both furniture and woodwork, is most desirable, and is obtained by the use of wax, flat varnish, or rubbing a gloss varnish. /J t % ~-Nv, J Wall —No. 13 Frieze— No. 2 J & D DULLTONE Ceiling — White The Dining Room S HOWN OPPOSITE, is planned for connection with the living room, and consequently is shown in Olive Green No. 1 1, Crimson No. I 4, Buff No. 3, with the same color wood¬ work as the former room. While it harmonizes with the living room, the general effect is lighter ( which is desira¬ ble) and we believe this color scheme affords a cheerful, animated setting, which is much to be desired. Browns, tans and creams are popular colors for Living and Dining Rooms, but an examination of our color card will indicate many pleasing and artistic combinations, among these we can recommend for the walls Dulltone Tint No. 3, Dado No. 2, and white for the ceiling. Our Art Department will furnish free of charge special color schemes, designed to meet any special conditions. We will make up special shades to fit any requirement; orders, however, for less than ten gallons take a higher price. We show this room, with woodwork, in the color of White Enamel. The colors in Dulltone would be equally suitable with any shade of Brown or Deep Mahogany on the trim. The suggestions in this room are for use in the interiors of old as well as new buildings. In the case of old buildings, individual judgment will have to determine the harmony between our wall schemes and the old woodwork, which it is generally difficult to change, but in new buildings our plans for both walls and woodwork will be found appropriate. The adaptability of fir, western pine, larch and other native woods to this purpose, due to their beautiful grain, susceptibility of fine surfacing and effective staining to represent the higher priced woods, has resulted in their extensive use for interior trim and a demand for a prac¬ tical Stain for these woods, which do not develop their full beauty with either a "dye" or an ordinary "oil stain". J & D Oil Stains are the culmination of many years of experience in catering to this demand. We wish to emphasize their distinctive value for finishing western woods, such as slash grained fir. This wood does not respond well to treatment with ordinary stains on account of the large content of pitch and rosin, and J & D Stains, if properly applied, will be found absolutely the most satisfactory. J & D Stains are easily applied. J & D Oil Stains have sufficient penetration and at the same time set slowly, permitting "equalization" or uniform effect on contiguous boards of different texture. J & D Oil Stain shades are permanent, even in the colors ordinarily fugitive, like our No. 88 Green. Best results are secured by applying a light coat of Shellac over the stain and then finish¬ ing by one or two coats of J & D Best Interior Varnish or Flat Varnish or polishing with J & D Wax, according to the nature of the finish desired. - SAMPLES OF J & D OIL STAINS ON WOOD CAN BE SECURED UPON APPLICATION -
