-55 • ' * i? >\ AN ADDRESS TO ALL CLERGYMEN. Whom shall we send as missionaries to the heathen ? True believers, and gen- uine Ambassadors for Christ; or, "false teachers ” ? ! “ Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, SAYING NONE OTHER THINGS THAN THOSE WHICH THE PROPHETS AND MOSES DID SAY SHOULD COME ” Acts 26 : 22 . This is a revised copy, of the original communication, sent to Messrs. Hoar and French, in the “ Andover Controversy ” : and by the Rev. Silliman Blagden, Evangelist. “ All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profit- able for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” 2 Tim. 3 : 16. “ For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man ; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1 : 21. “ And he said unto him, if they hear not Moses and the proph- ets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” Luke 16 : 31. INTRODUCTORY LETTED. [Copy.] Boston, Nov. 9 , 1886 . Messrs. Hoar and French. Very dear sirs : — I send you herewith a Communication; and as I am constrained to love you as my oivn soul therefore in the name of God, and for Jesus’ sake, I beseech you to read this all through carefully and prayerfully, that the spiritual eyes of your understandings may be more opened, to the devices and machinations of Satan, who is a person and a spirit (and who would fain mislead and beguile our souls to Hell) ; in order that being thus enlightened you may surely escape his wiles and snares, and lies and deceits ; and be built up in your most holy faith ; and that in the act of reading this entirely through, The Holy Ghost may come upon you in great love and joy, and spir- itual insight, and power, so that you will ever go on conquering and to conquer, overcoming all things through our Beloved, holding out unto the end, and at last meet each other in the very presence of our “ King in his Beauty,” where “ there is fullness of joy, and at whose right hand there are pleasures for ever more ” ! And in order that you may be, more and more, encouraged in your difficult, laborious, and great undertaking ; and that you may be spiritually strengthened with the reflection, that my feeble words but poorly, yet surely voice the views, and belief of such men, I believe, as Rev. C. H. Spurgeon : Evan- gelist Moody: Rev. Drs. George Muller: Thos. Richardson: Withrow : A. V. Lewis : Hammond : Talmage : A. J. Gordon : Wynkoop : Needham: Greene: Crosby: John Hall: Wm. M. Taylor : R. S. Storrs : Wm. K. Boyle ; Macdonald: J. C. Ryle : and more Ministers, Evangelists and Bishops also, of both Epis- • 4 copal and Methodist Churches, than I can find space or time to mention ; as well as hundreds of thousands of Christians, and of God’s children of all Denominations, in all creation! Yea and Amen ! Vast thousands of that great host, which no man can number, and which will come marching up from the East and West, and from the North and South to enter into the Kingdom of God, in that “ Great Day,” so soon to come ; will cheerfully, and enthusiastically say, to all that I have written, — Amen and Amen ! And may God grant that all herein give you , sweet “joy and peace in believing” in Jesus, which is the “one thing needful,” and power, and victorious might, to fight the battles of Our Lord ; for Jesus’ sake ; Amen. I am most respectfully Yours, in the Faith and Love of Our Beloved. SILLIMAN BLAGDEN. A COMMUNICATION. Boston, Nov. 4, 1S86. To the Messieurs, Judge E. Rockwell IIoar and Judge Asa French. Very dear Sirs : — I enclose a clipping from the N.Y. Times of Tuesday, which tells its own sad story ; and which stirs me up to write the following “ pro bono pub- lico ” ! And the last clause of this Article, which purports to quote some recent words of Rev. John P. Gulliver, of Andover ; — arouses, and fires all my righteous -indignation to such degree, that I feel, as if the very stones would cry out, should I hold my peace ! And I must add, that all my utterances, and arrows of “ the truth as it is in Jesus,” are aimed at sin, and Satan ; and without respect of persons. “ For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Eph. 6 : 12. And by the ichole “ Word of God,” we know, that Satan is as veritable a person and a spirit , as that Christ Almighty has said ; — “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven ” Luke 10: 18. Yea! he is here, in this poor, sin-cursed, and fire-doomed world as a real , but invisible person ; and described, as “ the prince of the power of the ah-.” Eph. 2 : 2 . 6 I He works in , and through , every man, woman, and child who is unconverted ; — who is not “ born-again ” ; — and who obey not the “ glorious Gospel of Our blessed God”! And this is as certain, as that “ The Word of God ” doth say ; — “ And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work ; only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming : Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivable- ness of unrighteousness in them that perish : because they received not the love of the truth , that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion , that they should believe a lie. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth , but had pleasure in unrighteous- ness,” (2 Thess. 2 : 6-12). And hence it is, that a great and good, and well meaning man, may be but the mouth-piece of the Devil, if he love not, and obey not “ the truth as it is in Jesus” and as it is revealed in the whole “ Word of God ” from Genesis to Reve- lation. And unless he remember that we must let the “ letter ” of “ The Word of God,” lead us ; so that we may enter into, and keep ourselves abiding in the Spirit of Jesus Christ ; Our Saviour, King and God! Well recol- lecting the admonition, that “ the letter kills, but the spirit giveth life ” ; still, we must not throw over-board the “letter ” ; but we must follow it, in loving obedience , that we may thereby be brought into the fullness of the mind and. Spirit of The Son of God! The “ letter ” is , to the spirit ; just what the little rudder is, to a great ship ! If we 7 cast away the rudder ; or if the ship will not obey the guid- ance of that little rudder ; then she will surely get into the “ trough of the sea,” when the storm comes, and will consequently be lost, and go to the bottom ! All Theologians, Ministers, Christians, and every soul, who lets go of the “ letter ” of “The Word of God,” will as surely get into the devices and meshes of Satan, as that he is an awful reality! And it matters not how great, and well-meaning the person may be ; such an one, must obey both the letter and the spirit of the whole “ Word of God ” ; or, in all probability, be used of the Devil ; and uncon- sciously so, to themselves ! For instance ; remember the example of the Great and Dear Apostle, St. Peter ; when he, with his great, loving, and well-meaning heart, answered back to Our Lord, upon being told of what He was about to suffer; — Matt. 16: 22, 23, “ Be it far from thee, Lord ; this shall not be unto thee. “ But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me , Satan ; thou art an offence unto me ; for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men ” ! Great St. Peter, did not know the Scriptures, as well as he might have done probably ; and very likely, he was not as “ full of faith and The Iloly Ghost,” as was possible ; hence not being governed by both the “ letter ” and the spirit of the whole “ Word of God,” he was but the mouth- piece of Satan, upon that one, and great, and momentous occasion ! Oh ! My dear Sirs ! what a terrible warning herein lies for each one, and for all of us ! Because, when we are tempted and tried by Satan ; we may not have the saving grace, to come off victorious, as did St. Peter finally ; unless we are indeed “ rooted and grounded ” in both the “ letter ” and the Spirit of the whole “ Word of 8 God ”• ! If it was possible for the great Apostle of The Lamb, St. Peter, — to be so “ off his guard,” so to speak; or, to be so wanting in knowledge, and love of, and obedience to God’s Eternal “ Truth as it is in Jesus,” as to he thus used of the Devil and unconsciously so, to himself ; then how much more likely is it, for poor, sinful men of our day, to he likewise used of Satan , unless led, and governed by both the “ letter ” and the spirit, of the whole “ Word of God ” ? ! The greatest enemies of God’s Kingdom on earth, and in our time ; and the greatest enemies of the Cross of Christ, in the world ; and this too, tho’ many of them preach Jesus ; are the men, who fill, and sit in, “ high-places ” ; and get deny and controvert, and try to wrest “ The Word of God” ! It is no wonder that Jesus said to such ; — “ The harlots will go into the kingdom of God before you ” ! Because some of these will repent, believe, and obey the Gospel. “ So the last shall be first, and the first last ; for many be called but few chosen.” Matt. 21 : 16. The concluding sentence of the article I send you, is a most wily, pernicious, subtle, delusive, ensnaring, and deceiving utterance of the same Satan, who hissed in the Garden of Eden “ eat the forbidden fruit ; thou shalt not surely die”! As in the late anarchical outbreak in Chicago, anarchists and murderers were a direful and stupendous real- ity ; about which, there was nothing figurative ; but all actual evil, to be overcome ; so also, is Satan an actual Evil for us to overcome now through Christ strengthening us ; and by “ the sword of the spirit” which is “ The Word of God.” And since we are living in the “ last days” ; and since Satan’s time is consequently short; of which fact, he is well aware ; he is therefore, all the more careful, and watchful, to instil his poisonous, false doctrine, and false- teaching everywhere he can find a dupe ; and especially 9 would lie introduce his lies, into all our God-given, and Christ-like Theological Schools and Seminaries. For these are to a certain degree, at least, the springs and fountain sources of all Christian faith and doctrine ; if he can con- taminate and foul these, he will taint the whole Church, to a greater or less extent. Thus Missions will wane ; and thousands, aye millions, go down into Christ-less graves ; to await a Christ-less resurrection ; and then to he cast off forever into “ the lake of fire ” ! (Rev. 20 : 14, 15 & Rev. 21 : 8 .) Of course Satan plans to, and will fight hard to accom- plish the awful task, of dragging all the souls lie can down with himself into the “ Bottomless Pit ” ; and he will do it by hook, or by crook ! And he will especially drag down most, through the instrumentality of false-christians, and false-teachers, and false Theologians, who “ call sweet, bitter" ; and bitter, sweet ” ! I believe if Christ were on earth to-day, lie would go through all our Seminaries, for which I have the highest regard and respect, and with a whip of small cords, thrash out, as so much chaff, many text-books therein, which have been slyly brought in, by the machinations of the Devil, .for the purpose of engendering questions which inculcate “ unbelief the great sin of sins ! (Vide John 16 : 8-1 1.) And very likely lie would also eject many “ Profess- ors ” ? ! My dear Sirs : — it is indeed time, that every true child of God, and joint heir with Jesus, put on the whole armor of God, and drive Satan from Our Seminaries, by “ The Word of God ” ! ! And we shall win , if we fight in the Name of Our Kin o- and with the “ sword of the Spirit” ! And may Almighty God grant it, for Jesus’ sake. Amen. A man must either become, more and more “ ortho- 10 dox ” ; that is more and more, like the Son of God, which is also to become, more and more, filled with Faith and The Holy Ghost ; or he will become, less and less, “ ortho- dox ” ; till he “ fall away,” like poor ; (Since the original copy of this letter was sent, the Clergyman here named has died : hence we will obey the good old maxim, — “ de mortuis nil, nisi bonum”!) or become an utter “ cast-away,” like poor Mr. (“ Adirondack ”) Murray ! There is no such thing as standing still ; any more than we can serve two masters ; we have got to be one of two things, which Almighty God thus designates ; “ I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art luke- warm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” (Rev. 3: 15, 16.) Thus we see in the case of St. Peter, Our Lord said that Satan had sought to have him, and would sift him as wheat ; but that He had prayed for him, that his faith fail not ; and so St. Peter became more and more “orthodox”; or, more and more tilled with “ Faith and the Holy Ghost,” as it is revealed in “ The Word of God,” from Genesis to Revelation. But, “ miserable dictu,” upon the other hand, Judas, by giving way to his “ besetting sin ” ; became less and less “ orthodox ” till finally, at the appointed time, “ Satan entered into him, ” and carried him away, in a whirl-wind of most unutterable crime ; — even the betrayal of il the Son of God ” ! And let us ever remember that Judas was once, one of the great Apostles of the Lamb ! “ All unrighteousness is sin”; and “whatever is not of faith, is sin ”; And thus Judas fell ; and by “ The Word of God ” is lost forever, in everlasting burnings, “ in the lake of fire ” ! Oh ! how have the mighty fallen ! What a les- son ; and what a warning, do we all behold in this ! 11 And when by faith, we look upon Our Beloved, hanging on the cursed tree; and bearing in His Own Body all our sins ; and washing us clean from all sin, and back-slidings, in His own most precious blood ; and thus read, by the witness of The Holy Spirit within us, “ our titles clear to mansions in the skies,” Well can we exclaim, with that sweet singer in Israel, the departed Mr. Bliss ; — “ Hallelujah ! What a Saviour ! ” And well may we also add, respecting Our Lord, and the mighty work he wrought out, and finished, in inde- scribable agony ; and “ obedience unto death ” ; and in wondrous Love upon Calvary’s Cross ; — “The half has never been told”! Of course, I have nothing against Prof. Gulliver ; nor against any other living being ; but on the other hand, were it necessary to save his soul from eternal burnings “ in the lake of fire ” ; and should God require it ; I would gladly give my own physical-life , to save his precious, and never dying, soul from everlasting doom ! But, by God’s grace, I intend to wage relentless spiritual war against the “ world, the flesh and the Devil ” ; first, to oust such from my own heart , and then to vanquish such wherever else found ; while breath remains within me ; or till Jesus comes, to cast out Satan ; and “ make up Ilis jewels ” ! And may The Lord God Almighty help us, one and all, thus to fight the good fight of faith, and lay hold upon eternal life, for His Great , and Dear Names' sake : Amen. And again, it is a favorite device of Satan, to get all people, and especially Ministers reading all the books 12 under the Sun, but the one great Book of books, which is “ The Word of God” ! The Holy Bible, is the only Book of all books, which is wholly inspired ; it is alone the bread of life, in one sense ; and leavened with Divine yeast ! And respecting which, “ it is written ” ; “ Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Rom. 10: 17. People and Ministers lack faith, and spiritual discern- ment, and insight into the heavenly mysteries of God, because they dorit read and “ search the Scriptures.” Let all Ministers read, love, obey and follow “ The Word of God” (Vide Rev. 19:13) alone everyday ; and as “ dear children ” “ walking in love,” and in Faith and the Holy Ghost ; — and all doubts, harassing unbelief, and perplexing conundrums, will vanish into oblivion. And when it is otherwise, then the person is still under the influence of sin and Satan. The whole “ Word of God” is as plain, and self-evident as “ A, B, C,” to the repentant, obedient, humble, believ- ing, and loving follower of the Lamb ! (John 6 : 45 & 8:28; also John 14 : 21, 23, 26.) And may The Lord help us ever to remember, that as we are living in the “ last days,” Satan is consequently starting all befogging questions, and using all his many wily, and deceiving arts, to ensnare the unwatchful and prayerless soul ; and to beguile “ unstable souls ” to Hell ! That in these “ last days,” there are wily, artful, specious, and plausible teachers of “ false doctrine” is all in direct accordance with the sure prophecies of “ The Word of God.” Such men are among the “ signs of the times ” ; and all the more strikingly so, because they mean well at heart ; and know not, that they have been misled and en- trapped ; and that they are now blinded by sin and Satan, and that they are unwittingly, but the mouthpieces of the Devil ! 13 Sec 2 Thcss. 2, with all the references thereon. But blessed be God, we can surely “ Overcome ” every temptation through Christ, who has overcome all things for us ! And iu the spirit of the admonition ; — “Ye should ear- nestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints,” Jude 3 — so would I fain do all iu my power, to hold up your faithful hands, in this momentous contro- versy, as Aaron held up the hands of Moses ! I believe most emphatically, that we are “ Free Agents ” (Vide Rev. 22: 17) and that just iu proportion as we make good use of this free agency, so will we be instrumental in snatching many brands from the burning, which will otherwise per- ish in everlasting burnings ; and which we know to be actually, and unalterably so, by “ The Word of God." The Lord is now drawing the lines tighter and tighter ; the time has come for men to choose ; and to announce their choice without mental reservation, or equivocation ; they must either believe in the whole “ Word of God ’’ from Genesis to Revelation, as it reads upon its very face ; or, “ step down and out.” And we, who do know, and love, and obey “ The Truth as it is in Jesus,” must be all the more prayerful and watchful that we are not hood- winked, bluffed, and misled by these very men, who hold false-doctrine, and sit in high places ! As free agents, we must do all in our power, to save, and protect the masses, or, oi nolloi from false-teaching ! Reflect upon the wonderful exhibition of a glorious use of Free Agency, as illustrated by Abraham’s prayers for the salvation of doomed Sodom ! (See Genesis 18 : 1-33.) And I cannot but think that had Abraham prayed still once again, that God would spare wicked Sodom, even for 14 the sake of one righteous man ; that perhaps Jehovah, in His wonderful love and mercy, might have turned away His awful wrath and saved poor Sodom for one righteous man’s sake ; even Lot 1 ! And may Almighty God help us, to make such Abra- ham-like use of Our Free Agency, as will be instrumental, by the power of The Holy Ghost, in saving many precious, and never dying souls, from eternal burnings ; for the sake of the Glorious Righteousness, and most precious Blood of the Son of God. Amen. Oh ! My dear Sirs ! Do think of what incalculable use to our fellow beings, we may be, in our time and genera- tion, if we will only appropriate and exercise “ Faith,” even “ as a grain of mustard seed ! ” We do live “ in an Age, on Ages telling ; and to be living, is sublime ” ! Now, with regard to the inevitable veritableness of Hell and “the lake of fire,” (Rev. 20: 15) many Theologians, Ministers and Christians, are in uncertainty ; and in an unbelieving and befogged state, because they do not read, nor know, nor digest the Scriptures", and the whole “ Word of God ” ; and because they are consequently out of heavenly communion , with the Loving Spirit of The Living God ; they do not know the Scriptures, nor the power of God ; and consequently they are not “ full of Faith and The Holy Ghost.” Nor do they realize, as even we might ourselves to a . greater degree, the infinite Almigiitiness, of The Lord God Almighty. By a little study of Astronomy alone, we get an inkling, and a scintillation, as it were, of His Almightiness ! And this is most to be desired, for it teaches, and creates within us, humility ; and “ lie that exaltcth himself shall be 15 abased ; but he that lmmbleth himself shall be exalted ; and “ God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble ” ! And in the wake of humility, comes an “ under standing heart ” ! (1 Kings 3 : 9.) When we reflect, that great as this world is ; it is still, one of the smallest , of the greater worlds all about us ; when we contemplate, through a powerful Telescope, the marvellous immensity, beauty, and wonders of the “ Milky- Way ” ; when w r e look at “ Arcturus,” one among the countless host, and remember that it is reported to be 95 billions of miles from the earth ; so that it takes 25 years, for its light alone to reach us ! and that Sir William Herschel suggests “ that all the Planets, Constellations and Stars, are revolving around an inestimable distant center ,” and which we will suppose to be Jehovah’s awful, yet glorious Throne ! ; when w r e reflect that they can, and have estimated , the distance of many Planets and Stars ; and so tell us, that “ Arcturus,” for example, is 95 billions of miles from this Earth ; an inconceivable distance ; — then w 7 hat must be the incalculable, and infinite, “ ines- timable distant center, ”of which Sir William Herschel speaks ? ! We repeat, that thus reflecting, we stand spell-bound and amazed, at such a faint glimpse even into the incom- prehensible Almightiness, and Glory, of Almighty God ! And our souls are awed, and hushed into simple, submis- sive, and child-like obedience to Jehovah’s Hand, and Voice, which is seen, and heard through all of “ The Word of God ” ! (Rev. 19 : 13.) “ The heavens declare the glory of God ; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. “ Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 16 “ There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.” Ps. 19:1-3. And now in view of such contemplated facts , and vastly many more than we, or the pen of any man can write, or describe ; — what little bits of insignificant pygmies, are we, poor sinful creatures ! Yea, Iioav infinitesimally small, do we behold ourselves to be, in every way ! And it is no wonder, that “ it is written,” of a great man, of olden time; for example; “Thou worm Jacob”! And when men, blinded by sin and Satan, deny and try to wrest the infallible “ Word of God,” we can say, with great and dear King David, “ He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh ; the Lord shall have them in de- rision ” ! Ps. 2 : 4. And yet Jehovah loves us, even us ; poor sinners, though we be, with an everlasting love ; and He has ransomed, and redeemed, and bought us with Plis own most Precious Blood ; and as God’s children, we are dear and precious to Him ; joint-heirs with His only begotten, and beloved Son ! Yea, we who are sheltered under the Wing of “ THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”; Jer. 23 : 6, and under His most precious Blood, are, and ever shall be, the royal children of an Almighty Sovereign ! “Hallelujah! What a Saviour”! When thus, we keep in mind, our own littleness, and especially our sinfulness ; and the infinite and divine Almightiness of our Creator ; we too, can say with David : — “ O, Lord how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. 17 “ When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fin- gers, the moon, and the stsjrs, which thou hast ordained : “ What is man, that thou art mindful of him , and the son of man that thou visitest him ? ” Ps. 8 : 1-4. Hence, it is no wonder , that in the olden time when The Lord looked down from heaven, and saw that, the imagin- ations of the hearts of men, were only “ evil continually,” (Vide Gen. 6 : 5) that He sent the “Flood,” and swept them all away ; but “ eight souls ” ! But in fact, it is a wonder that he spared even Noah and his family ! And when the same Great God , looks down from heaven to- day, and beholds the all-prevailing sin and evil, among the children of men everywhere ; and when He hears men ; whom He, in His wonderful loving-kindness, has hereto- fore made great in His service ; now denying, wresting, and endeavoring to controvert His Inspired, and Divine Words ; with as hard, and as unbelieving hearts, and with as stiff and obstinate necks, as the ancient back-slidden Israelites ; Yea, when we think of all this, and much more also ; it is indeed most marvellous, that He still forbears ; because, as “ it is written,” so will it surely come to pass, sooner or later ; that “ the Lord God of recompenses shall surely requite /” (Jer. 51 : 56.) And so we are reminded of the words of Isaiah ; “For all this his anger is not TURNED AWAY, BUT HIS HAND IS STRETCHED OUT STILL.” And this illustrious Prophet, repeats these same blessed words over again and again, three times, in the 9th Chapter (Isa. 9 : 12, 17, 21)! “Behold therefore the goodness and the severity of God ! on them which fell severity ; but toward thee goodness, if thou continue in his good- ness ; otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.” Rom. 11 : 22. And so let us ever rightly mete out, and “ divide” the word of truth, that all shall ever recollect, that while Our 18 “ God is Love ” ; it is also written that “ Our God is a consuming fire ” ! (Ileb. 12 : 29.) And to deny what Jesus tells us, in “ The Word of God” respecting Hell, and “the Lake of Fire” is as wrong, and as ridiculous, and as fearfully suicidal, as it would be to deny the positive existence of all the many Avoes and ills, to Avhich all flesh is heir ! God is Laav, Order, and Truth: and Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.” And He has revealed Himself, to us, in “ The Word of God.” Lev. 19 : 13. If ice go astray , and are finally lost ; we have no one to blame but ourselves , sin and Satan ! It is possible for every man to be “ born again,” saved ; and gathered into God’s Eternal Paradise, if the man only will ! “ Whosoever will, may come ! ” Whosoever will become Christ-like, may ! Every man can of his oivn free will choose, and betake himself to, either Hell or Heaven ! God has opened the Avay ; and shown us. the Avay ; and made it so simple, plain, and easy, that a way-faring man though a fool, shall not err therein ! But, if he fails to reach Heaven ; and is at last cast off into “ the lake of fire ” ; as he will most surely be doomed if his name is not found written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Lev. 20: 15) still, we repeat , he has no one to blame but himself ‘ sin and Satan ! And it is as foolish and suicidal to deny this, as to deny any other inevitable truth, and fact contained in “ The Word of God ” ! Satan is the direct cause of “ original sin,” and of all our troubles, wretchedness, miseries, avocs, death, and Hell. Satan is to be blamed as the primary cause and origi- nator of all troubles, in this troubled Avorld. Satan Avas an angel once in Heaven, having poAver and might ; but he rebelled against God, and by his persistent 19 rebellion ostracized himself from Paradise. Remember then, — should hard thoughts arise in mind and heart, upon the consideration of the facts herein, — that such should be aimed at Satan only, for he alone is the cause, as “ The Word of God” bears testimony in the following; — “And there was war in heaven ; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon ; and the dragon fought and his angels, “ And prevailed not ; neither was their place found any more in heaven. “ And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world : he was cast out iuto the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. “ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the Kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ : for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony ; and they loved not their lives unto the death. “ Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea ! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” llev. 12: 7-12. One might as well deny that Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Pestilences, Famines, Cyclones, Wars, and various other, and many horrors, have not, and do not, sweep away hun- dreds and thousands of mortals in direful deaths ; — as to deny a syllable of what Jesus tells us, about Hell, and “ the lake of fire,” in “ The Word of God.” ! ! And this is why Jesus is unspeakably precious to us, who believe ! For not a hair of our heads shall perish ! God says it ! Luke 21 : 18. 20 And this is why, I take upon myself the task of writing all that is herein. And what kind of a man would I be, knowing all these things to be as eternally real and true, as that God is manifest in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself ; — and yet fail thus to write ; and especially when moved to do so, by The Holy Ghost, for the salva- tion of precious souls'? I repeat, what kind of a man would I be ? ! I would be both a coward ; and a man criminally derelict, in the performance of a most crying- duty ! Why, only some eight years ago, it was reported that some five millions of people, were swept off the face of the earth by a Famine in India! Recent despatches tell us of the dreadful death-rate caused by cholera in Corea ; some six thousand dead, and buried in ten days ! “ These are facts, and facts are stubborn things ” ! One might as well deny that lightning strikes and kills ; and as well deny that sooner or later the icy finger of Death itself is finally laid upon all flesh ; as to deny what Christ Almighty tells us about Hell, and the “ lake of fire” in “ The Word of God”! And this is why it is sweet for us who believe to sing : — “ Just as I am, without one plea ! But that Thy Blood was shed for me ! And that Thou bidst me come to Thee O Lamb of God, I come ! I come.” One might as well deny, that this sin-cursed and fire- doomed world, is indeed even now, as ever in the past, since Satan’s entrance, full of the most awful and heart- rending calamities ; As the following item bespeaks ! ft 21 [An extract from the Boston Ilerald.] BURNED BY INCHES. DEATH OF MRS. SCHERER, ONE OF THE EAST RIO VICTIMS. Capt. James Dwight of St. Paul, Minn., was on the ill- fated Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul train which was wrecked at East Rio, and described the scene to a Daily News reporter. Capt. Dwight said: I was all through the war, hut I never witnessed a more frightful death-scene, than that of the poor woman, Mrs. Conrad Scherer. When I got to the day coach it was ablaze. The flames lighted up every thing around. Mrs. Scherer’s face was plainly to be seen. She partially leaned out of the coach and made two or three efforts to extricate her limbs from the wreckage that held her down. We pressed forward to her aid. Quicker than thought she had lifted a little child, 3 or 4 years of age, and placed it in the arms of the first man to reach her. The little thing screamed and cluug to its mother’s neck, but she tore its hands off, and fairly threw it from her. She turned back into the car, took up another baby, clasped it to her bosom, and then forced it from her into the hands stretched up from without to take it. “ Give them to their father,” she gasped, “his name is Scherer, and he lives in Winona.” Just then I saw two men grasp her on either side. The light was so brilliant that their figures and faces were per- fectly distinct. One of the men I at once recognized as Bishop Whipple of Minnesota. They tried to lift her out, but she was wedged down. They endeavored to move the debris, but it was unavailing. 22 “ You can not save me ; save yourselves,” said the woman. She threw up her hands and moaned in her agony. Her head fell forward, and though her body w r as erect she seemed unconscious. The good bishop was still vainly trying to extricate her from the weight that held her fast. The flames were creeping upon him, and already singeing his clothing and hair. Then, when a fresh volume of fire burst up directly in his face, he reached forward and half supported the dying woman. He placed one hand on her head, and turning his face upward his lips moved as if in prayer. Then the man who had aided him in his en- deavor to save her pulled him away. “ The womans figure burned until it was black and charred .” And again ; One might as well deny that the Prophets were mal-treated, and stoned to death ; that the Apostles, with but one exception, were martyred ! “ For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” “ And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Horn. 8 : 22, 23. “ For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven. If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.” 2 Cor. 5 : 23. And one might as well deny, that the Son of God suffered untold agonies, and was crucified, and rose from the dead in a mighty resurrection ; and then ascended into Heaven, in a glorious ascension ; as to deny the veritable existence and presence of Satan, in this world, as a person and as a spirit ; and as to deny that all that Jesus tells us of Hell, and “ the lake of fire,” in “ The Word of God,” is literally and absolutely true ! “ Ours, not to reason, why ? Ours but to do, and die ! ” “ For whosoever will save his life shall lose it ; and who- soever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” (Matt. 16: 25.) O my dear Sirs : ere long, in God’s appointed time, every soul will find out, to their terrible grief and sorrow, and unutterable woe, and everlasting doom, if uncon- verted, and still disobedient, that “ The Word of God" is literally and absolutely true ! Or, if indeed “ born again,” and lovingly obedient to the “ glorious Gospel of our blessed God,” they will find the same to be likewise true, to their unspeakable joy and glory ; and to their Eternal bliss, and rapture, in all the Paradise of God. and in the Presence of Our King, where “ there is fullness of joy, and at whose right hand, there are pleasures forever- more ” ! And even here below, “ Her ways, are ways of pleasant- ness, and all Her paths are peace ” ! Prov. 3 : 17. We remember that Jehovah has created us in His own image ; and that “ God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life ” ; but still, we do also know, with equal certainty, that we must be “ born again,” as Jesus tells us, in the infallible “ Word of God,” in order to enter Heaven, There must be an entire change of mind and heart, and a new spiritual creation ; or, the soul cannot, and will never, see ; nor, enter Heaven ! This is God’s Law, Order, and “ Truth as it is in Jesus,” 24 and as revealed by the Mind and Spirit of Christ, in the whole “ Word of God ” ! Great as this world may be, and the people in it, in our estimation ; still it is not of such great consequence in His sight, but that He will fulfill all His promises, warnings, and prophecies to the very syllable of every word ! as writ- ten in 41 The Word of God ” ! (Luke 16 : 17. Matt. 5 : 18. 1 Peter 1 : 25.) As a drop of water, is comparable with all the waters, in all the Oceans of this Globe, so in a little measure, may we compare this wee-Earth , with the Universe of The Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty ! Is it any wonder then, He washed out all sin, and sin- ners, by the “ Flood ” in olden-time, we ask again 1 ! And is it any wonder that He has told us by St. Peter, that in His own appointed time, He will burn up this world and all the works therein: — (2 Peter 3 : 10). “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the sec- ond death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Rev. 20 : 14, 15.) ? ! (Rev. 21 : 8.) In the light of all the above, and vastly more also, is this to be wondered at ? ! I trow not ! But the great wonder is, that He tolerates for a moment longer, a world so full of sin, and sinners ! ! Let us think for a moment, what the beauty, and loveliness, and indescribable holiness of the Angels, and Seraphims, and Cherubinis, and all the glorious hosts of Heaven, must be like ! To say nothing of Our “ King in His Beauty” ! The one “ Altogether Lovely.” We can get at, just an inkling of it, by a comparison. Our Lord said that of all men born of woman, there is not a greater than John the Baptist ; and yet the least in the Kingdom of Heaven, 25 is greater than he ! So wc see, that John the Bap- tist was one of the greatest, if indeed not the greatest, man, that ever lived upon this earth ; but still Christ Almighty says, that the least in the Kingdom of Heaven, is greater than he! And in this connection, we must add for our soul's comfort ; that since Jesus says, “ \\ hoso- ever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matt. 18 : 4.) We have only to “ take ” the Kingdom of God like those little ones, He gathered in Ilis Arms, and about whom He said, “ Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven,” and then we too shall be numbered among the greatest! (Luke 18:17 Vide also.) O my dear Sirs : We little dream of our own littleness and insignificance ; and the inconceivable beauty, glory, greatness, and divine holiness of all the Angelic hosts around Jehovah’s Throne ! Surely then, we must be holy in order to see God ; and we must strive to become “ per- fect” even as Our Father in heaven is perfect! And blessed be God, we attain unto all this, by simple, child- like faith and trust in Jesus ! Blessed Jesus ! “ THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS ” ! And now can any poor soul attain unto this, without the Gospel ! ? By “ The Word of God” we see, and by the accompany- ing witness of The Holy Ghost, we do positively know, that it is absolutely impossible ! “ Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “ Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the King- dom of God.” John 3 : 3, 5. “ Marvel not at this ; for the hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice. 26 “ And shall come forth : they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life ; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” John 5 : 28, 29. Both the letter and the spirit of the whole “ Word of God,” are as diametrically opposed, to any such false-doctrine, as “ pro- bation after death ; ” as God Almighty Himself, is opposed to the Devil ! One might as well say, I cannot think that there are such awful things as Pestilences, Famines, Earth- quakes, Cyclones, Wars, Lightnings, and a long list of horrors, with Death itself, sweeping hundreds and thou- sands into untimely graves ! Do the tender thoughts, and sweet wishes of such people, alter facts ; or change the Laws and Truths, and Ordinances, and Prophecies of God Almighty ? ! O my dear Sirs, we should cry-out, — “get behind me Satan”! “thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of man ” ! Yea and Amen ! All such teachings contrary to, and unauthorized by, “ The Word of God,” are but the “doctrines of devils”! (1 Tim. 4:1.) And all such persons, may appear outwardly, very sweet and lovely, they may speak fluently, with well-oiled-tongues, and say the most plausible, and specious things ; but not- withstanding this, if they put forth and introduce doctrines, contrary to both the letter and spirit of the Mind and Spirit of Jesus Christ, as lie is revealed in the whole “ Word of God,” from Genesis to Revelation, then they are branded by Christ Almighty llimself, in The Person of The Holy Ghost, and through St. Paul, as “ seducing spirits”! (1 Tim. 4:1.) And may God bring all such, to repentance ; and to a knowledge of Ilis “Truth as it is in Jesus”: and de- 27 liver them from the blinding influences, and powers, of Satan : and bless them , for Jesus’ sake ; Amen. Now, as an illustration of God’s Law and Truth, respect- ing Hell, and “ the lake of fire ; ” and that 1 1 is Ways are so revealed to us, in Ilis Own Lear Son, and by “The Word of God ” ; that those who arc finally lost, have none to blame but themselves, sin and Satan : the following may be helpful ; for instance, if we put into the palm of an opened-hand, some pieces of wood, hay and stubble, to- gether with pieces of coal, stone, iron, gold and silver, and perhaps as many other things, as the hand will hold : and also add besides all the above, some pieces of steel ; and then taking a Magnet in the other hand, we bring it down to within close distance, above the opened-palm con- taining all the above things : we shall find that at once, all the little pieces of steel, will be drawn up, and toward the descending Magnet ; they will, as it were, fly toward it, and attach themselves to it, while all the other various, and many pieces of different and foreign substances, as described above, will remain still, intact and motionless ; left behind, to be shut-up in the closing palm ; or to be cast away ; while the little pieces of steel, still adhering to the Magnet, are lifted up, and away from, the other material things, to which they have no likeness, nor re- semblance ! All, “ wise Virgins,” in Christ’s Universal Church, in the Wide World, are now looking for His “ Second Coming ” : And as above illustrated thus will it be when He does come ! All who are “ full of Faith and The Holy Ghost,” will be like the little pieces of steel, to “ be caught up together, to meet the Lord in the air : and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” (1 Thess. 4: 17.) While all the unconverted ; that is, all, who are not “ born 28 again,” will be left, and will remain here to perish in the certain conflagration of a sin-cursed, and tire-doomed world ! And whoever denies it, denies the Voice of Almighty God, Who speaks through the whole “ Word of God ” ; and especially now, in the following: “ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idol- aters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burnetii with fire and brimstone which is the second death.” (Rev. 21 : 8.) “ For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoso- ever ioveth and maketh a lie.” (Rev. 22: 15.) Yea and Amen: Every soul not having a resemblance, and likeness to The Son of God, will be left behind, to burn up with this World ; they will be shut out of Heaven, by their own willful lack of resemblance to God, and to Heavenly beings : and they will remain caged in a burn- ing world, forever and forever! And I pity the soul, who denies the Word, and Voice of Christ Almighty! “ And the smoke of their torment ascendcth up forever and ever ; and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his image.” (Rev. 14:11.) Now let us also bear in mind what little insignificant pygmies, we mortals are : the infinite immensity of the Universe ; and the Divine Almightiness of Almighty God ! And in addition to this, let us recollect, that we have been cursed and ruined, by sin and Satan. Then, who are we, to argue, and wrangle, with Jehovah ? ! God has warned us, that the children of the third and fourth generation shall sa fer for the sins of their Parents : and that He shows “ mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my Com- 29 mandments ” ! There are two classes of people in the World to-day, and there have ever been two classes. They compose the Children of God : and the Children of the Devil. All the heathen, and all members of the latter class in Christian Lands ; but especially the heathen in what may be called all-heathendom ; all now living, and all who have ever lived, can trace their genealogies right straight back to the descendants of Cain, or to the rebellious descendants of Noah ! So that all the heathen who have perished in the past, and that perish now, and in the future, have gone down into, and do still go down into, Eternal Doom, on account of the sins of their Parents and Ances- tors, as well as for their own sins. The descendants of Noah, after the flood, were “ Free Agents ” : some of them chose to love, obey, and follow God, of their own free will; and we, together with all the “elect” that are and that have ever been, are the descendants of “ faithful Abraham,” and of those, who thus chose thousands of years ago, and of their own free will, to love and serve Jehovah with a “perfect heart”! But, “miserabile dictu,” others of those descendants of Noah ; and the incestuous daughters of Lot : chose to serve the Devil ; and from these , have sprung all the heathen in all lands ! And all the awful unmentionable, and indescribable sins, of all their devilish-like Ancestors, have heaped upon their own originally sinful heads , such a weight of iniquity, as to leave them not the scintillation of a shadow of a hope, to escape eternal burnings, without the SAVING GRACE OF THE “ GLORIOUS GOSPEL OF OUR blessed God ! ” That the heathen have not had like opportunities with ourselves for hearing the Gospel, is because they are the direct descendants, of those abominably, willful, and dis- 30 obedient Ancestors, who voluntarily chose to serve the Devil, rather than God ! And they have no one to blame but their Ancestors, them- selves, sin and Satan. It is God's Eternal Law. And whoever tries to deny this : or, to wriggle around it ; or, to squirm from underneath it, is “ playing with edged-tools ” ; is offering up “ strange fire,” is tampering with “The Word of God”; and will be found fighting against God, and He will grind such to powder ! And yet, Blessed be God ; the precious, and glorious promise and invitation, rings-out still as loud, and as powerfully as ever, to every living soul, “ And the Spirit and bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him TAKE THE WATER OF LIFE FREELY.” (HeV. 22 : 17.) All Glory to the Lamb ! O my dear Sirs; in the ISamc of God, and for Christ’s Dear Sake, I beseech you, “ Watch and Pray,” that “ye enter not into temptation ” ; and that no man deceive, or mislead you ; or, take away your crown ; because we do kpow by “ The Word of God,” and by the Witness of The Holy Ghost, that every soul who has died out of Christ in the past ; and that all who die out of Christ to-day, and in the future, are lost forever; and that there is nothing in store for them, but the “ second death,” which is “the lake of fire”! (Kev. 20; 14, 15.) Why! Luke 16: 17- 3 1 vs. settles it, if nothing else does ! We believe that while Our Blessed Lord’s Body laid in the Sepulchre, after the awful Crucifixion ; He, in The Person of The Holy Ghost, went Personally into Hell ; and there, so overcame “ the powers of darkness,” and 31 Satan, with all his angels, as to purchase for, and to give us, and every Christ-born-soul, instantaneous and everlast- ing salvation, and release, from all their thraldom, both now in the living present, and in death : so that when we die in Christ, we go at once ; without a hair of our heads being singed, or without a taint, or smell of fire upon our garments ; “ sweeping through the Gates, washed in the precious Blood of The Lamb”; into the very Presence, of The Lord God Almighty! And that when Jesus went thus into the place of “ departed spirits,” lie did so, in order to complete for us, this wonderful, and glorious sal- vation ; but not to bring the gospel to them, for their own release ; for they are beyond reclamation, like the Devil himself! But Christ Almighty, went into the “ place of departed spirits,” in order to “ checkmate ” the Devil’s power, and that of his Hellish crew, and angelic legions; over all of us both now , and when our Christ-born souls leave these tenements of clay, to go to those mansions He has gone to prepare for all who really love Him ! And well indeed may we sing : — “ Hallelujah ! What a Saviour ” ! But some one is awfully responsible ; and will be held to a dreadful accountability, for all the heathen every- where, to whom the Gospel has never been carried, nor preached ! And this terrible responsibility and accounta- bility falls upon every man, woman, and child who is “ born again,” and who really loves Our Beloved, both individually and collectively ; and most especially does this tremendous responsibility, and accountability devolve, and rest upon “ The Lamb’s Bride,” — the whole Church of Christ Almighty , in all Creation ! And may The Lord help us ever to remember, ourselves ; and then remind 82 others : that we, are among its component parts ; for His Name’s sake: Amen. And may God Almighty arouse, awaken and call the whole Church of Christ in the wide World, to the most vivid realization, of this our responsibility, and accounta- bility to Him, for the salvation of the heathen ; so that to all idle, vain, and “ seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils,” we will say as one man , “ get thee behind me Satan,” — and as one man arise, and go to the heathen in the power of Christ- Almighty, who has all power in heaven and on earth, and “compel them to come in” in The Name of The Loving Spirit, of The Living God ; Yea, may He grant all this, and more also, for the sake of the glorious Righteousness, and most precious Blood, of The Son of God; even Jesus! Blessed Jesus! Amen and Amen. O my dear Sirs, just think of what little moment, are the pleasures of this fleeting and vain world ; which, at most, is only ours to participate in, for some eighty years ; when compared with millions, billions &c., &c., &c., of years, Aye Eternity ! And that every soul that lives, or has ever lived, or that shall ever live ; will surely spend this Eternity, in one of two places ; in either Hell, or Heaven ! And that this is as surely so, as that “ The Word of God" is true. ! And just think, when in that great, and awful, yet glorious Day to Come, — “The Judgment Day,” — when Adam, and all the Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, and all the Nations, and every soul that has ever breathed on earth, shall come lip in their times, and generations, before that great, white Throne, — The Judgment seat op 33 Christ, — to be judged for the “ deeds done in the body ” ; just think, I repeat, how unspeakably glorious, and blessed it will be for us, and for those that hear us ; should it then be found, that we had been instrumental, through Christ, and by a proper use of our “ Free Agency,” in the Divine power of The Iloly Ghost, in bringing many, yea very many, heathen, to a saving knowledge of God’s “Truth as it is in Jesus;” so in that August Place, and in such an Awful and all-glorious Time — we can point with heavenly joy to thousands, and say, — “ Lord, here am I, and the children, whom thou hast given me ” ! ! O may The God of Abraham, Isaac and of Jacob, and of all the Prophets, Apostles, and Martyrs ; and The Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ The Father of glory, grant all this : and may He enable us to appropriate and exercise such faith, that His promise shall be fulfilled to us, and in our day, — “ Ask of Me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance ” (Ps. 2 : 8.) for Jesus’ sake ; Amen. And now, Very Dear Sirs : in great respect, and in true humility ; and constrained by the love of Christ, I submit all the above for your hearty attention, and most prayerful consideration ; and I beg of you in God’s Name, and for Christ’s sake, to make such use of it, and to put it into such hands, as will turn the most to righteousness, and win the most precious souls to Jesus, and to His Paradise of Eternal Life : and as will snatch the most brands from Eternal burnings, in an Everlasting Hell ! “ From Greenland’s icy mountains, From India’s coral strand, Where Afric’s sunny fountains Roll down their golden sand ; 34 From many an ancient river From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver Their land from error’s chain. “ Shall we whose souls are lighted With wisdom from on high, Shall we, to men benighted The lamp of life deny ? Salvation ! Oh, Salvation ! The joyful sound proclaim, Till each remotest nation Has learnt Messiah’s name. “ Waft, waft ye winds, his story, And you, ye waters, roll, Till, like a sea of glory, It spreads from pole to pole ; Till o’er our ransomed nature The Lamb for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator, In bliss returns to reign.” And “ he that winnetli souls is wise : ” “ And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament ; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.” (Prov. 11: 30. Dan. 12: 3.) Praying The Lord Jesus to bless you : and that He keep you from all evil, by the power of the precious Blood of The Lamb; (Vide Rev. 12:11.) and that He comfort your souls, with a sweet and abiding recollection, of all His promises, which are Yea and Amen in Christ Jesus ; especially causing you to stay your minds and hearts, upon these following precious words : — “ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee ; because he 35 trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord forever; for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” (Isa. 26: 3, 4.) “And I will betroth thee unto me forever: Yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in loving kindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me, in faithfulness ; and thou shalt know the Lord.” (Ilosea 2 : 19, 20). “And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.” (1 Peter 5 : 4). And that He baptize you, more and more, with The Iloly Ghost, and with tire, and with power, granting you perfect peace and love ; and joy unspeakable and full of glory “ in believing”: and that He give you signal, and glorious victory, over all the enemies of The Cross of Jesus Christ ; and that He bind us all up together in the bundle of life, tighter and tighter, together also, with His Own Self, The Lord Our God ; that in the “ sweet by and by,” we may see Our “ King in His Beauty, and behold the land that is very far off : — that He grant all this, and more also, for His Great and Dear Name’s sake; to whom we joyously ascribe all the Praise, and Love, and Glory and Power, forever and forever.
