JULY 1892. -9 ^ LONDON : PRINTED BY TAYLOR AND FRANCIS, KED LION COURT, FLEET STREET. A wish has been expressed on several occasions that a Catalogue of the Pictures and Busts in the possession of the Royal College of Surgeons of England should be compiled, and although from time to time attempts have been made to supply the want, no one has hitherto been able to give the time necessaiy for searching the Minutes and other records of the College. In publishing this Catalogue, it is hoped that the short Biographies may lend additional interest ; and although it is not intended that they should be exhaustive, an endeavour has been made to give as complete a record as possible of the appointments held by those who have assisted in creating the history of the College. In writing the Biographies I have made use of many works, among which may be mentioned the following, viz. : — Biographical Memoirs of Medicine in Great Britain, by John Aitken ; Clarke's Autobiographical Recollections of the Medical Profession ; Physic and Physicians, by Forbes Winslow ; M.D.; Eminent Doctors — Their Lives and their Works, by G. T. Bettany ; Dictionary of National Biography, edited by Leslie Stephen ; Petttgrew's Medical Portrait Gallery ; Cooper's Biographical Dictionary; Grainger's Biographical Dictionary; The Roll of the Royal College of Physicians of London, by Wm. Munk, M.D. ; Richard Wiseman, a Biographical Study, by Surgeon-General A 2 Sir T. Longmobe, C.B. ; Mems, Maxims, and Memoirs, by Wm.Wadd; Nugse Chirurgicse, by Wm. Wadd ; Men of the Time ; The Gentleman's Magazine; The European Magazine ; The Lancet; The British Medical Journal; The Medical Times and Gazette ; The Records of the Barber- Surgeons, by Sydney Young; South's Memorials of the Craft of Surgery in England, by D'Abcy Powee, &c, &c. Valuable information has also been obtained from the officials and from many friends of the College, whose kind assistance I gratefully acknowledge. It may be mentioned that in the Library of the College there are many hundreds of engraved portraits which the Librarian is always happy to exhibit to those who are interested in the celebrities of the Profession. King's Surgeon, Master of the Company in 1563, and Sergeant Surgeon to Queen Elizabeth. The following is an extract from the Minutes of the Court, 6th July, 1786 :— " The Master informed the Court that having been in- formed that in a late sale of pictures by Monsieur Desenfans a large and capital picture was exposed to Sale, being a Cartoon painted by Hans Holbein representing King Henry the VIII th delivering the Charter to the Barber Surgeons in the year 1535, and having Examined the same and being satisfied of its undoubted Authenticity and that it was the Original Picture of that Subject, and Mr. Grjndall having also Examined it and being of the same Opinion, and thinking such an Opportunity of procuring the possession of such a picture should not be missed, and being of Opinion that the same might be procured for a reasonable price they had treated for the purchase and having reduced the Terms to 50 guineas they had purchased the same on the account and for the use of the Company and the Court of Examiners had issued the price of it out of the Company's cash. " Resolved that this Court doth highly approve of the conduct of the Master and Mr. Grindall upon this occasion and return them thanks for their attention to the Concerns of the Company." Mr. D'Arcy Power, writing about this picture in ' Me- morials of the Craft of Surgery in England,' says : — " I have, however, recently made a somewhat careful u examination of it. The principal portraits bear testimony " to the masterly hand of Holbein. The back row of figures " on the left of the King are evidently by an inferior artist, " as they bear no resemblance to those of the finished picture " in Monkwell Street, some of the heads being quite grotesque " and more like caricatures than the faithful portraits of c 2 36 " Holbein. . . . The portraits are taken upon four pieces " of paper, which are joined together upon a canvas to form " the picture." Writing of the Holbein Picture in the possession of the Barbers' Company, Mr. Sidney Young says : — " The picture exhibits a Charter with the Great Seal " pendant, and has always been popularly known and " described as the e granting of the Charter to the Barber- " Surgeons.' On the other hand, however, the King was but "21 years of age in 15 12 and 49 years in 1540, which latter " age accords with the picture ; moreover, Yicary, Ayleff, " Habman, and the others represented, were Members of the " Court in the latter year, but not in 15 12. These con- " siderations are sufficient to demolish the ' Charter ' theory, " and point to the hypothesis that it is the Union of the " Barbers' Company with the Guild of Surgeons, accom- " plished by Act of Parliament in 1540, which is com- " memorated." DE FREY (1798) OF THE PICTURE BY REMBRANDT (1607— 1669) IN THE NATIONAL GALLERY AT THE HAGUE. Presented by Mr. GrEORGE Redford, 10th February, 1888. Mr. George Redford, writing in 1888, says : — " The famous picture signed and dated was painted by Rembrandt in 1632 for the Corporation of Surgeons of Amsterdam, and kept in their Hall till 1828, when they decided to sell it for the benefit of an establishment for the poor supported by them. The right of the Company of Surgeons to sell was disputed by the Burgomaster of the City, and the King, in order to prevent the picture passing into other hands, proposed to buy it. After some discussion this was agreed to at the price of 36,500 florins, and the picture was placed in the National Gallery at the Hague. " The picture is one of the first early works of Rembrandt, and he was only 26 years old when he painted it. " Professor Tulp is lecturing ; on his right is Matthew Kalkoen with a sandy beard, his left hand on his breast ; next him is Jacob de Wille, in a pink silk dress, the head nearly in profile leaning forward. The figure holding a paper on which are inscribed the names of the persons is Hartman Hartmans. The two next him are Jacob Block in a dark grey figured dress, and I. Van Loenen. The 53 seated figures at the side are Adrian Stabsaan, in a dark brown dress, and full white ruff, his hand on his knee, and Jacob Koolveld in a grey dress, the head in profile. The figures are the size of life." F 0.77, Portrait. John Wunter, PENCIL PORTRAIT BY SIR NATHANIEL DANCE HOLLAND, BART., R.A., IN 1793. (1734—1811.) Presented by Capt.
