There is nothing else like it. Circle A construction is factory completed UNIT construction. And when we say completed we mean to the last and finest detail, including painting, hardware, flooring, interior plaster walls and ceilings, even to shingles on the roofs. And Circle A completed units are factory built by expert builders, employ¬ ing every effective detail of accuracy and saving made possible by modern methods and careful supervision in the thoroughly up-to-date wood-working plants of the Alexander Lumber Company. Thus these completed units come to you all ready for instant assembling by bolting. A hammer, wrench and screwdriver are the only tools you need. The method of The Alexander Lumber Company is “from stump to con¬ sumer.” The trees are cut down in their forests and the logs are cut by them into the lumber that never passes from their possession until the completed units are ready for shipment to the consumer. You get the direct benefit of all these splendid money-saving resources: Copyright 1918, by The Alexander Lumber Company, x ... Our Resources TIMBER LANDS 250,000 acres in the counties of Kemper, Noxabee and Winston, Mississippi, and counties of Sumter, Pickens, Green and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. 35,000 acres near Vancouver, B. C., purchased of the Canadian Government. LOGGING PLANT 5 Baldwin locomotives, 110 logging cars, miles of standard guage railway, tracks, bridges, trestles, Clyde four-line mechanical rehaul skidders, McGiffert loaders, etc. MANUFACTURING PLANTS Saw mills, planing mills and the electrically operated, model industrial city (built by us) of Electric Mills, Miss. Saw mills and planing mills on the M. & O. Railway at Reform, Alabama. CAPACITY OF THESE MILLS 500,000 FEET DAILY Wholesale millwork and assembly plant at Decatur, Ill. Sectional building and general woodworking factories and lumber storage yards at Champaign, Ill. LUMBER AND BUILDING MATERIAL YARDS 79 plants in various towns and cities of Illinois and Iowa. All the foregoing (while under several corporate names) are owned and operated personally by the same aggregation of officers and stockholders, that have successfully handled them for the last quarter of a century. Circle A Unit Buildings are a natural outgrowth of these 25 years’ experi¬ ence and development in this one field. Sectional buildings heretofore manufactured have only been partially built at factory. The purchaser received the outside shell only. Wood ceiling, wall board, interior finish, hardware and other materials were furnished extra, which then had to be nailed or fitted into place and painted to complete the struct- tures. The extra labor and materials needed and the necessary services of ex¬ pert workmen added greatly to the original cost and the method of completion destroyed their portable features. Circle A Unit buildings are unusually sub¬ stantial and rigid, yet portable. The interior walls of ordinary “sectional” buildings always make them look like makeshifts. Shrinkage leaves the walls and partitions so one can see through the joints and they become cold and draughty. In Circle A Unit con¬ struction (“patents pending”), however, each section is absolutely complete in itself when it reaches you. The exterior walls are made of heavy siding outside and full plaster panels inside, with dead air space and two thicknesses of paper insulation, better than most permanent building construction. All painting and staining is completed, each window, door or fly screen is fitted into the section and all hardware attached before shipping. Never before has a building so completely built at factory and by expert workmen been offered the public. Circle A Unit construction appeals to representative contractors desirous of giving prompt, efficient and comprehensive service in large volume at this time when labor conditions are notably stringent. Yet Circle A Unit construe- CIRCLE-A UNIT BUILDINGS “FROM STUMP TO CONSUMER" 2 gnmtfrtintfiifliinimnirniimiimiriifMiriMiiiir*^ tion is not a makeshift—it lends itself with equal facility and economy to those seeking a high class permanent dwelling or other building as to those seeking dispatch, where time is vital and needs are temporary. Circle A Unit construction is even stronger and more element proof — (heat, cold and"storm)—than standard permanent construction. This is due to the known quality, thorough insulation and stability of each unit before it leaves the factory. Flexibility and Salvageability Because each Circle A section is an interchangeable unit, complete in itself, these buildings can be arranged to suit owner after arrival or erection. The same units moreover will build a garage, residence, hospital, school, barracks, or other buildirgs of most any arrangement desired. It is just as easy to dis¬ mount the buildings as to erect them and nothing is destroyed, lost or injured in the process. But, more than this, Circle A Unit construction provides for expansion as desired. The one-room home or building of today can be added to at will, from time to time. This makes the initial investment within reach of farm tenant or laborer, yet Circle A Units are always marketable, being unaffected by change of general building design, or size, or time. This feature especially commends itself at present, particularly, as applied to large industrial operations where housing is of a temporary yet elastic nature. When the need for such buildings has passed the same Circle A units can he used for other purposes, whether for garages, assembly halls, club rooms, sani¬ tariums, farm houses or even as additions to warehouses or other factory buildings. Circle A Building Cost Circle A Building prices mentioned in this book cover a host of items which must be paid for as costly extras in buildings of other construction such as portable, sectional and ready cut. Many a “mail order” building has been purchased with the thought that the first cost was the last cost, but the purchaser soon found that he must buy extra material and pay for much skilled labor in many branches of the build¬ ing trades to complete it. “Ready cut” construction is excellent in theory, but usually an economical failure in practice, for the reason that much time of highly paid workmen must be wasted in first locating the large number of small pieces and then assem¬ bling them in “picture puzzle” fashion—this exceeding in most cases the cost of building in the regular way. Not only this, but all ready cut and practically all other sectional build¬ ings with finished interior walls, lose their flexibility and portability when once erected, involving a serious loss once the need for them has passed. On the other hand, Circle A Unit buildings never lose their flexibility or portability, thus insuring a marked financial saving through years of service, a further factor of efficiency being their great stability and durability by rea¬ son of the complete workmanlike and practical construction of the units them¬ selves. CIRCLE-A UNIT BUILDINGS << FROM STUMP TO CONSUMER’ aiiitffliiiwuiuttiimttuuttBttimimNuumimmffiNittNHflUHiiuuiM 3 siiiiimiiiiiiimiiiiinintiiiHiiiflfiinniiniiiiiiiimminM Prices on buildings quoted herein are complete costs F. 0. B. cars factory, not including heating, lighting, plumbing, gutters, spouting and assembly, most of which items are usually handled as separate contracts in any type of con¬ struction. Where Circle A unit buildings are erected on cedar posts and panel work foundations and square steel air cooled chimneys (patents pending), our prices include these items. Where masonry, foundations and chimneys are wanted the average value of labor and materials to be purchased locally is estimated for buyers’ guidance. Masonry materials are heavy and transportation costs high in proportion to their value; therefore they can usually be secured locally at considerable saving. Thus, while Circle A Building prices may seem somewhat higher at first glance, an analysis of them will show clearly the fact that the cost is really less than for other buildings, bearing in mind the cost of labor and added materials necessary to the completion of the other types. Not forgetting that this additional cost is often further increased by workmen’s errors, delays in delivery, and “piece-meal” construction. Circle A Unit buildings are completely on the ground before construction is started, assembly by unskilled labor being but a matter of hours—no delay at any point — no laborious matching of parts — no small pieces to confuse, get lost or misplaced — no section too large for two men to install — no complicated diagrams to follow—no “hitch” of any kind. Circle A units fit readily, easily and accurately, quickly merging into artistic structures that suggest nothing of their sectional nature, while assuming a rigidity and stability of permanent character. ♦ THE ALEXANDER LUMBER COMPANY General Offices, Suite 718 Monroe Building, Chicago Factories and Engineering Offices, Champaign, Ill., U. They consist of four types, namely: Floors, Walls, Ceilings, and Roof Sections, uniformly three feet wide and interchangeable. Each type of section is completely built, painted, stained and all hardware put on at our plants. The walls and ceiling sections are provided with re-inforced plaster panels inserted at the factory. Sills equivalent to 4x8 in., floor beams 4x6 in., corner posts 4x8 in., wall posts, ceiling joists and rafters 4 x 4 in. This is heavier construction than that used in standard frame buildings, they are also more element proof. The window sections contain the windows glazed and painted, hardware attached, screens installed. The door sections have doors and screens fitted, hardware installed and painted. Standard 'wall sections are 8ft. high but can be increased to 10ft. if required. Foundations Where estimates are given for masonry foundations and chimneys they provide for foundation walls 3’0” high overall, 8” thick with 12” footings of common brick. Type “B” Roof Sections These wood face roof sections (patents pending) are made of clear red cedar clapboards dipped in oil and attached with cement coated nails to rafters over asphalt roofing. They are painted red or green and provided with water proof joints at intersections. They make a long lived and attractive roof at less expense than shingles. These units are complete when they leave our factories. See details. Type “C” Roof Sections This is the cheapest form of sectional roof in our building system. The rafters are covered with one inch ship lap and the (Circle A) green or red slate coated asphalt roofing is sent separately to be applied on the job after the roof sections are in place.
