This ])ibliogrrapliy is a preliminary i n vest i oration looking towards ])ringing to<2:etlier here at the rniversity of California as complete a collection of works re^rarding Bishop P>erkeley as can he procured. Such a colleetion would he a most tittni. A SKETCH OP BISHOP BERKELEY. George l^erkeley was born at Dysert, Kilkenny County, Ireland, ^larch 12, 1685 n.s. He was of Anglo-Irish descent; about his T)arents little is known, but as a bov voung Berkelev was uiuisually precocious. In ]\Iarch, 1700, at the age of fifteen, lie matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin, graduated four years later, and in 1707 took his ^Master's degree. In that year he published his first work, two mathematical tracts in Latin. In 1709 he received his first ordination. Four vears later, after a stav of thirteen vears, Berkelev left Trinity College to accompany Lord Peterborough, as chaplain, to Sicily. In the meantime he had written and published. An essay towards a ncir fhconj of visio}i, 1709; A treatise concerning the principles of ftuman kiioirJcdge, 1710; and Three dialogues between Hijlas and Philonous, 1718. After a short stay on the continent Berkeley returned to London where he remained two years. In 1715 he went to Italy as a traveling tutor and visited various countries of Europe before he returned to London in 1720. In 1724 Berkelev received from the Duke of Grafton the rich preferment of the Deanery of Derry. ^Meanwhile he had at heart a gigantic philanthropic scheme for civilizing and christianizing the American Indians by establishing a college in the Bermuda islands. lie pul)lished A proposal for the better supplying of churcJfes in our foreign plantations in 1725, and the following year he was in London seeking funds for the furtherance of his plan. He married Anne Forster in 1728 and set sail for Rhode Island, as he deemed his actual presence in America a prelimi- nary necessity to establishing a college there. He landed at Newport in January 1729, bought a farm, and there passed nearlv three years in studious retirement. When he learned that the promise of an endowment of $100,000 for his college would not be fulfilled by the P^nglish government, he returned with his familv to London in February, 1732. Although Berkeley's I)rimary scheme to found a college failed, still his presence in \ ^ G VNIVEESrn OF CALJFOFMA. Berkeley made of his theory was to refute deists oi* free-thinkers, and to defend ( 'hi'ist ianity. His philosophy was seriously considered by l)u1 few of his contem{)oraries and he sulTered from the almost total ahseiice of intelli^nMit criticism. Not until the middle of the nineteenth centurv did he receive sympathetic notice in Hngland. Just a K BIBLIOGEAPHY OF BISHOP BERKELEY. 7 century earlier, the startinf? point of French criticism began with A^)ltaire and Oondillac. but it was the latter part of the nine- teenth century hefore Jk^rkeley received serious consideration in Germany. Philosophy is indebted much to the subth^y of his genius and the ()i'iginality of his spiH'ulations. As a writer. Berkcdey's merits are of the higliest order. He was a complet*' mast(^r of literary form. Gosse says, "He is one of the most <'X(|uisite of all wi'iters of English prose," and Saints- bui'y calls him. ''The greatest master of Eiiglish philosophical stvle. " He was a close friend of tlu^ leadinix Euirlish men of letter's, — Addison. Pope, Ste(4(\ and Swift, being especially under the patronage of the latter. I^erkeley was a man of medium stature, c^rect ami handsome; gr<>at learning, large conversational abilities, amiable manners, and lihei'al svmpathies gave him an individualitv and a charm that is rarely surpassed.
