MANTELS IN CRETAN STONE T T T T WM. H, JACKSON COMPANY NEW YORK T t CHICAGO ARTISTIC MANTEL CRETAN WM. H. JACKSON COMPANY a WEST 47th STREET, NEW YORK 318 N. MICHIGAN AVE., CHICAGO Established 1827 ( Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2020 with funding from Columbia University Libraries https://archive.org/details/artisticmantelsiOOwmhj CRETAN STONE FTER a long period of research and of scientific experimentation, the manufacturer of Cretan Stone has succeeded in producing a synthetic article which, in its durability, texture, beauty and finish, is in every way the equal of the popu¬ lar Grecian, Roman and other natural stones. The manufacturing process permits of the reproduc¬ tion of the most intricate ornamentation of design, while its homogeneous structure allows chiseling and tooling of the finest character, even though the quality of the binder used renders it as hard as any natural stone. The texture lends itself readily to antique or other finishes. Its specific gravity is about equal to that of limestone or marble, but because of its average thickness of one and one half inches, reinforced, it has the great advan¬ tage of lesser weight, which is an important point in handling, shipment or installation. On orders for special designs, Cretan Stone can be produced in a comparatively short time after approval of models, obviating the delay incident to the selection and quarrying of natural stone. A glance at the accompanying photographs indicates clearly its decorative and artistic possibilities in mantels, but it may be specified for other interior work, such as door and window trim, cornice, wainscoting, pedestals, fountains, etc. The base of Cretan Stone is crushed marble, assem¬ bled, after a special formula, into a solid mass by a durable chemical binder, and is free from Portland cement and plaster of Paris; this creates an incomparable product, the preponderance of marble insuring utmost endurance and permanence. Many of the mantels shown are replicas of antiques selected from importations and authentic models, and others are from the designs of prominent American architects. ’’V ■ ft* ■■ -S' 1 - ... ■■-,...« » .. ■»'■ foimmmrn-vK ■HP ' ’ — ■ ^l> ^ 7 >i,.
