- ■( AVERY LIBRARY COLUMBIA UNIVfflsiyy It affords us a great deal of pleasure to present to our friends the increased number of embossed metal patterns shown herein. The favor with which our productions have been received by architects, builders and buyers of ceilings generally, has stimulated us to greater artistic efforts, and we hope the results will be appreciated by those who aim at the highest and best in interior decoration. We have sacrificed nothing in the simplicity of construction, permanency, nor fire, dust and vermin proof qualities of our Ceilings in attaining the elegance of our new patterns. We would be pleased to receive your plans from which to prepare suggestive sketches and estimates. WHEELING CORRUGATING COMPANY WHEELING, W. VA. NEW YORK, N. Y„ 47 Cliff Street. CHICAGO, ILL., 185 and 187 Lake Street. ST. LOUIS, MO., 12th and Poplar Streets. CHATTANOOGA, TENN., King Street. The Werner Company, Akron, Ohio. TERMS Thirty day acceptance or one per cent, discount from net amount of invoice for cash if paid within ten days from date of invoice. Bills not paid at maturity are subject to sight draft with ex¬ change and cost of collection without further notice. Remittances must be made in New York, Chicago or St. Louis exchange. Orders from patrons not favorably rated, and not sending references, will be shipped to our own order, and draft with bill of lading attached will be sent through the bank for collection. Delays will be avoided if reference is furnished when inquiry is made. Claims for errors must be made on receipt of goods. All shipments should be checked upon arrival and reported immediately. Goods cannot be returned without our consent, if they were shipped according to order, and then if damaged in returning, credit will not be allowed to a greater amount than their value. Returned goods must be accompanied by an invoice and bill of lading. Working Plans Showing the arrangement of ceiling material shipped are furnished in all cases where diagrams of the rooms to be ceiled are furnished us, and detailed plans showing the method of applying the material are made. When desired, we can furnish experienced men to erect the material, charging for their time, transportation and board. If a diagram of the room to be ceiled is furnished, with the distances from point to point, and with the size and shape of all off-sets indicated, we can make more intelligent estimates, and if desired, submit a design free of charge for the approval of the customer. As our draftsmen are busy at all times on accumulated work, customers desiring drawings should furnish their diagrams as early as possible. In all cases inform us of the height of the room and the distance between the tops of window and door casings and the ceiling, so that a Cornice of suitable depth can be selected. If no choice of design is indicated, we will prepare an artistic arrangement of plates suitable for the shape of the room and the purpose for which it is to be used. THE ADVANTAGES OF STEEL CEILINGS as a substi¬ tute for wood or plaster ceilings scarcely need comment. The expense of repair and the danger and annoyance of falling plaster, have demonstrated the necessity of a fire, water and vermin proof material which will not crack or warp. Our Ceilings and Side Walls combine these essentials in handsome and artistic designs that are elegant in appearance, simple and practical in construction, and capable of the highest ornamentation. The matching points are concealed by beads and are not noticeable. Especial attention is called to the great diversity of effects obtainable, and the wide range of designs presented. WHEELING CORRUGATING COMPANY WHEELING, W. VA. NEW YORK, N. Y., 47 Cliff Street. CHICAGO, ILL., I 85-187 Lake Street. ST. LOUIS, MO., J2th and Poplar Streets. CHATTANOOGA, TENN., King Street. TUPPING DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING TRIKE a chalk line across the joists at right angles through the center of the room. On this line nail, with 2>4-inch wire nails, % x %- inch wood strips, so that the center of the strips will be on the chalk line, and at every six inches from center to center, on each side of this strip, nail additional strips, until the line of the cornice is reached; then strip to suspend brackets, as indicated in the accompanying illustrations. The distance between the strips for the panel plates, Nos. 223, 224, 226, 227, 228, 229, etc. must be made to correspond with the width of the panels, 6, 12 or 24 inches, as the case may be. For those plates in which the stripping cannot be placed at less than 24-inch intervals, a cross strip should be inserted to permit nailing all around the outer edge of the plates. Carefully level the strips by placing wedges between the strips and the joists, to bring them all to a uniform depth, otherwise the ceiling will present an uneven surface when completed. When the ceiling is to be applied to sheathing, furring strips will not be required, but the sheathing must be level. Panel ceilings (plates 223, 224, 226, 227, 228 229. etc.) cannot be applied without stripping. Apply the ceiling plates each way from the center, consulting the plan as to the position of moldings, centers, etc. Lap the gauged edges over the unfinished' edges of the adjoining plates, and keep the lapping edges running from the light. If each piece is carefully lapped the beads will be straight and true and the joints not noticeable, as they become part of the general design. Nail the Ceiling to the strips with the l*^-inch nails, nailing through the center of the buttons every six inches. To insure rigidity and uniformity of surface on panel designs, it is necessary to nail only at the points provided, as the ‘deep embossing affords the necessary rigidity. Use a sharp punch for making the nail holes where there are more than two thicknesses of metal. If a cornice is used, the pattern of which extends on the ceiling to take up the odd size of the room, as shown in Fig. 1, leave the outer edge of the ceiling piate or mold¬ ing unnailed, to allow the cornice to slip under the plates; then nail as before. If the cornice used has not such a filling pattern, a border or filler plate is used between the cornice and the molding or field of the ceiling, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which border plate must be cut to the width necessary and lap under the field plates. Hammer down or “swedge” with a small dull tool any joints which may not have lapped tightly, owing to the lapping beads becoming twisted or flattened in applying. This renders all joints tight and unnoticeable. Cornices of stamped designs, as in Fig. 2, are to be coped or mitred at all angles, as stock mitres cannot be formed at the factory on account of the embossed design, which must match continuously around the room. Sufficient brackets are shipped to be placed at every joint. Fig. 1 represents the method of applying Cornices Nos. 176, 215, 217 and 251. Figs. 2 and 3 show the method of applying Cornices Nos. 220, 221, 222, etc. The profiles of each of these Cornices differ, but the application of all Cornices of each class is the same. Concerning these more material considerations the Scientific American says: “ With reason it is contended that apart from their decorative features the Steel Ceiling offers greater immunity from danger than any other kind of ceiling. Immunity from fire, from falling substances, from moisture, etc. If properly placed in position, Steel Ceilings retain their solidity of surface permanently, neither cracking, shrinking, warping or otherwise going out of form.” 58 Wheeling Corrugating Company, Wheeling, W.
